Design strategies for dual-band class-e power amplifier using composite right/left-handed transmission lines

In this article we propose a technique for dual-band Class-E power amplifier design using composite right/left-handed transmission lines, CRLH TLs. Design equations are presented and design procedures are elaborated. Because of the nonlinear phase dispersion characteristic of CRLH TLs, the single previous attempt at applying this method to dual bond Class-E amplifier design was not sufficient to simultaneously satisfy, the minimum requirement of Class-E impedances at both the fundamental and the second harmonic frequencies. This article rectifies this situation. A design example illustrating the synthesis procedure for a 0.5W-5V dual band Class-E amplifier circuit simultaneously operated at 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz is given and compared with ADS simulation.

WASP-4b: A 12th magnitude transiting hot Jupiter in the southern hemisphere

We report the discovery of WASP-4b, a large transiting gas-giant planet with an orbital period of 1.34 days. This is the first planet to be discovered by the SuperWASP-South observatory and CORALIE collaboration and the first planet orbiting a star brighter than 16th magnitude to be discovered in the southern hemisphere. A simultaneous fit to high-quality light curves and precision radial velocity measurements leads to a planetary mass of 1.22(-0.08)(+0.09) M-Jup and a planetary radius of 1.42(-0.04)(+0.07) R-Jup. The host star is USNO-B1.0 0479-0948995, a G7 V star of visual magnitude 12.5. As a result of the short orbital period, the predicted surface temperature of the planet is 1761 K, making it an ideal candidate for detections of the secondary eclipse at infrared wavelengths.

Right-left discrimination among medical students: Getting it right all of the time?

Objective To determine medical students’ self awareness and ability to discriminate right from left; to identify characteristics associated with this ability; and to identify any techniques used to aid discrimination. Design Questionnaire and psychometric study. Setting Undergraduate medical school, Northern Ireland. Participants 290 first year undergraduate students. Main outcome measure Medical students’ ability to discriminate right from left using the Bergen right-left discrimination test. Results Test scores ranged from 31 to 143 on a scale of 0- 144 (mean 112 (standard deviation 22.2)). Male students significantly outperformed female students (117.18 (26.96) v 110.80 (28.94)). Students who wanted to be surgeons performed significantly better than those who wanted to be general practitioners or medical doctors (119.87 (25.15) v 110.55 (27.36) v 112.50 (26.88)). Cinderella comes to the Ball: Article 14 and the right to non-discrimination in the ECHR

Article 14 ECHR has often been derided as a Cinderella provision, but during the last few years, this has started to change. This article examines how Article 14 has developed, and may live up to its potential as a powerful non-discrimination principle. The case law developments in relation to the “ambit” requirement in Article 14, the development of indirect discrimination case law, and the approval of positive action, all point to a more substantive conception of equality, which offers protection to disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.
