Madras triple helix’ was the name assigned by the scientific community in the West, to the molecular model proposed for the fibrous protein collagen, by G N Ramachandran’s group at the University of Madras. As mentioned jocularly in a recent retrospective of this work by Sasisekharan and Yathindra [1], the term was possibly coined due to the difficulty of Western scientists in pronouncing the Indian names of Ramachandran and his associates. The unravelling of the precise nature of collagen structure indeed makes for a fascinating story and as succinctly put by Dickerson [2]: “... to trace the evolution of the structure of collagen is to trace the evolution of fibrous protein crystallography in miniature”. This article is a brief review highlighting the pioneering contributions made by G N Ramachandran in elucidating the correct structure of this important molecule and is a sincere tribute by the author to her mentor, doctoral thesis supervisor and major source of inspiration for embarking on a career in biophysics

Blue coloured, unstable, essentially diamagnetic and non-electrolytic diruthenium(III) complexes of the formation [Ru2O(O2CR)4(en)2(PPh3)2] were prepared by reacting [Ru2O(O2CR)4(PPh3)2] with 1,2-diaminoethane (en) in CH2Cl2 (R = C6H4-p-X; X = H, Me and OMe). The molecular structure of the complexes is proposed as [{(?1-O2CR)(?1-en)(PPH3)Ru}2(?-O)(?-O2CR)2] based on the 1H NMR spectral data. The electronic spectra of the complexes display a band near 569 nm with a shoulder at 630 nm. In CH2Cl2-0.1 M [Bun4N]ClO4, the complexes exhibit redox couples Ru2III,III/Ru2III,IV and Ru2III,IV/Ru2IV,IV near 0.1 and 1.2 V (vs SCE), respectively. The potentials are the lowest among diruthenium(III) complexes with a similar core structure.

Crystal data for 1a.1.5MeCN. 0.5Et(2)O: triclinic, P (1) over bar, a = 13.125(2) Angstrom, b = 15.529(3) Angstrom, c 17.314(5) Angstrom, a; 67.03(2)degrees, beta 68.05(2)degrees, gamma = 81.38(1)degrees, V 3014(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 2. Crystal data for 2a: triclinic, P (1) over bar, a 8.950(1) Angstrom, b = 12.089(3) Angstrom, c = 13.735(3) Angstrom, alpha 81.09(2)degrees, beta = 72.27(1)degrees, gamma = 83.15(2)degrees, V = 1394(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 1. The complexes consist of a diruthenium(III) unit held by two monoatomic and two three-atom bridging ligands. The 1-MeIm ligands are at the terminal sites of the [Ru-2(mu-L)(eta(1):mu-O(2)CR)(eta(1):eta(1):mu-O(2)CR)(2)](2+) core having a Ru-Ru single bond (L = OMe or eta(1)-O(2)CR). The Ru-Ru distance and the Ru-O-Ru angle in the core of 1a' and 2a are 2.49 Angstrom and similar to 76 degrees. The complexes undergo one-electron oxidation and reduction processes in MeCN-0.1 M TBAP to form mixed-valence diruthenium species with Ru-Ru bonds of orders 1.5 and 0.5, respectively.

Progress in the development of contraceptive vaccines for males and females is reviewed. Based on the criteria which need to be met with, none of the proposed candidate antigens meets the requirements for use as a contraceptive vaccine for human application. One of the major problems is the need for periodic injections to maintain required titre and use of an alternate method until effective titres are obtained. Some of the problems associated with active immunization approach can be overcome by the use of preformed, highly specific, potent antibodies. Some progress has been achieved in this direction by the use of humanized single chain monoclonal antibodies to human chorionic gonadotropin.

The title complex has been prepared from a reaction of [Ru2O(O22CMe)2 (MeCN)4(PPH3)2](ClO4)2 with N,N-dimethyl-1,2-diaminoethane (dmen) in MeOH. The crystal structure of [Ru2O(O2CMe)2(dmen)2(PPh3)2](ClO4)2.MeOH shows the presence of a [Ru2(mu-O)(mu-O2CMe)2]2+ core. The terminal ligands on each metal are a PPh3 and a bidentate chelating dmen. The Ru-Ru distance and Ru-O-Ru angle in the core are 3.271(2) angstrom and 120.9(4)-degrees. The more electron-donating site of the dmen ligand is bonded at the terminal sites trans to the mu-oxo ligand. The complex displays a visible absorption band at 566 nm (epsilon, 6960 M-1 cm-1) in MeCN and undergoes a nearly reversible one-electron oxidation at 1.02 V and an irreversible reduction at -0.52 V (vs SCE) in MeCN-0.1 M [NBu4n](ClO4).

Three new cationic amphiphiles bearing anthraquinone moieties at the polar headgroup region were synthesized, The single-chain amphiphile, N,N-dimethyl-N-octadecyl-N-(9,10-dihydro dioxoanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 1, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide upon dispersion in water gave co-micellar aggregates containing covalently attached anthraquinone residues at the polar aqueous interfaces. The other two double-chain amphiphiles, N,N-dioctadecyl-N-methyl-N-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxoanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 2 and N,N-dimethyl-N-(1,2-bispalmitoyloxypropanyl)-N-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 3, however, on dispersion in aqueous media produced vesicular aggregates. The critical temperatures for the gel to liquid-crystalline-like phase transition processes for the vesicular systems were determined by following temperature-dependent changes in the ratios of keto-enol tautomeric forms of benzoylacetanilide doped within respective. vesicular assemblies. The redox chemistry of the these supramolecular assemblies was also studied by following the time-dependent changes in the ITV-VIS absorption spectroscopy in the presence of exogenous reducing or oxidizing agents, Electrochemical studies using glassy carbon electrodes reveal that redox-active amphiphiles adsorb on to the glassy carbon surfaces to form electroactive deposits when dipped into aqueous suspensions of either of these aggregates irrespective of the micellar or vesicular nature of the dispersions.

The linear quadridentate ligand N,N'-bis(benzimidazoI-2-ylethyl)ethane-l,2-diamine (L') and its 1 - methylbenzimidazole analogue (L2) and homologues form 1 : 1 complexes with Cu(CIO,),; L' also forms complexes of the types CuL'X, where X = NO,, PF,, Br or CI and CuL'(X)Y where X = CI or Br and Y = CIO, or Br. Deep blue CuL1Br,*2H20 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with Z = 4, a = 9.91 9(2), b = 16.626(3), c = 14.1 02(3) le\ and p = 94.39(2)". The structure was solved by Patterson and Fourier difference methods and refined by the least-squares technique to R = 0.064 for 2195 independent reflections with / > 1.50(/). The molecule lies on a two-fold axis symmetrically around Cu". The co-ordination around Cu" is found to be square planar with two amino nitrogens and two benzimidazole nitrogens forming the equatorial plane [CU-N 1.983(3) and 2.037(4) A]. The bromides are at longer distances [3.349(1) A] in axial sites. Ligand field and EPR spectra indicate that one bromide or chloride ion is axially co-ordinated to Cu" in [CuL1l2+. This ion exhibits quasi-reversible redox behaviour. Electrochemical studies of the dihalides in methanol have established the presence of [CuL'X,], [CuL'(X)]+ and [CuL'I2+ in equilibrium. In complexes with 565 [CuL4I2+ [L4 = N,Nbis( benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)ethane-l,2-diamine] and 555 [CuL3] [L3 = N,N'-bis(1 -methylbenzimidazol- 2-ylmethyl)propane-l,3-diamine] chelate rings, Cull does not seem to lie in the N, square plane, as revealed by their low A values and irreversible electrochemical behaviour. The Cu"-Cu' redox potentials in methanol are in the order [CuL1I2+ < [CuL3I2+ < [CuL4I2+; this illustrates that sixmembered chelate rings are suitable to stabilize Cu", when CU-N 0 interactions are favourable.

The 1:1 and 1:2 cooper(II) complexes with the tridentate compound bis(benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)amine (L(1)) and its benzimidazole (L(2)) and amine (L(3)) N-methyl-substituted derivatives have been prepared and their spectroscopic properties studied. While the 1:1 complexes are of the type CuLX(2) nH(2)O (X = C/O-4(-), NO3-, Cl- or Br-), the 1:2 complexes are of the type CuL(2) (ClO4)(2) nH(2)O (L = L(1) or L(3), n = 0-4). In all these complexes L acts as a tridentate ligand with the amine nitrogen and both the benzimidazole nitrogens co-ordinating to Cu-II. The complex [CuL(2)(1)][ClO4](2) 2H(2)O crystallises in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with a = 9.828(2), b = 9.546(2) and c = 19.906(2) Angstrom and beta = 95.71(1)degrees, for Z = 2. The R value is 0.0635 for 2180 significant reflections. The copper(II) ion has an elongated octahedral geometry with four equatorial benzimidazole and two long-distance axial amine N donors. The Cu-N-bzim and Cu-N-amine distances are 2.011(4) and 2.597(6) Angstrom respectively. Factors favouring facial co-ordination to tridentate ligands are discussed. The 1:1 complexes involve meridonal co-ordination of the ligands, with square-based geometry as revealed by ligand-field and EPR spectral properties. The NMe substitution as in CuL(3)(ClO4)(2) confers low V ($) over tilde$$(max) and high E(1/2) for the cu(II)-Cu-I couple. Most of the 1:1 complexes are less reversible but exhibit E(1/2) values more positive than those of the corresponding 1:2 complexes.

The Malabar Pied Hornbill, Anthracoceros coronatus, is a near threatened species, endemic to the tropical deciduous forests of central and southern India and Sri Lanka. The Dandeli region in Karnataka (India) is believed to be the last stronghold of this species in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. Being a rapidly developing area with a growing human population, the threats to this species and their habitat are mounting, especially due to a large number of hydroelectric projects and habitat fragmentation caused by paper and plywood industries. This study evaluated the change in population status of the Malabar Pied Hornbill over a 23 year period and defined priorities for the long term conservation and monitoring of hornbills in Dandeli. Encounter rates of hornbills were also analysed in relation to the density and species richness of trees and fruiting trees, basal area, canopy cover and distance from river. Hornbill encounters were not significantly different compared to the earlier study carried out by Reddy in 1988, but were significantly different across the five sites in the current study. Higher numbers of hornbills were encountered closer to the river, but these results were only marginally significant. The mean numbers of hornbills recorded at the two roost sites identified in Dandeli were 26 +/- 4.47 (n=16 counts) and 31.78 +/- 3.53 (n=14 counts) respectively. The study also helped build local awareness about the species, train local Forest Department staff in monitoring hornbills and develop a management plan for its conservation.

Novel fluoroarylporphyrins bearing electron donor dimethylamino groups in the meso-aryl positions and an electron acceptor nitro group on one of the pyrrole carbons exhibit significant solvent dependent fluorescence spectra and time-resolved emission properties. These effects are suggestive of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the singlet excited state of these porphyrins. Electrochemical redox behaviour of these porphyrins showed the presence of substantial donor-acceptor interactions in the nitro-amino porphyrins.

A few fixed distance covalently linked porphyrin-quinone molecules have been synthesized in which a benzoquinone is directly attached to a meso/beta-pyrrole position of tri(phenyl/pentafluorophenyl)/tetraphenylporphyrins. The choice of fluoroarylporphyrins permit modulation of Delta G(ET) values for photoinduced electron-transfer reactions in these systems. All short distance porphyrin-quinone molecules showed efficient quenching of the porphyrin singlet excited state. The electrochemical redox data coupled with the steady-state and time-resolved singlet emission data are analysed to evaluate the dependence of Delta G(ET) values on the rate of electron transfer (k(ET)) in these systems. The meso-trifluoroarylporphyrin-quinones are found to be sensitive probes of the surrounding dielectric environment. Varying solvent polarity on the mechanism of fluorescence quenching and k(ET) values revealed that short donor-acceptor distance and the solvent dielectric relaxation properties play a dominant role. Redox reactions which occur at positive potentials such as ferrous/ferric, hydroquinone/quinone, ferrocyanide/ferricyanide etc. in aqueous acidic electrolytes cannot be studied on non-platinum metals, for example, a Ni electrode. On the contrary, these reactions occur on polyaniline (PANI) modified Ni electrodes, as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry, amperometry and steady-state polarization experiments. Under identical experimental conditions of scan rate (v) and concentration (C), the peak current density (i(p)) values of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox reaction are greater on the PANI modified Ni than on Pt. Additionally, the peak potential separation (DeltaE(p)) of the voltammogram is lesser on the PANI modified Ni. With an increase in thickness of the PANI, DeltaE(p) increases suggesting that the redox reactions tend to depart from the reversibility. Scanning electron micrographs reveal the presence of a crystalline deposit of PANI on Ni when the thickness of PANI is about 0.08 mum. However, the PANI becomes amorphous and porous at higher thickness values. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies corroborate the observations made out of scanning electron microscopy. Higher catalytic activity of PANI is attributed to crystalline nature of PANI on Ni. Exchange current density and standard rate constant of Fe2+/Fe(3+)redox reaction are evaluated.
