O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da forma de preparo na conservação pós-colheita de figos-da-índia minimamente processados. Foram utilizados figos-da-índia maduros de polpa alaranjada, provenientes de pomar comercial da região de Valinhos-SP. Após a seleção, os frutos foram lavados e higienizados em solução com Sumaveg® a 200 mg 100g-1 de cloro livre, por 5 minutos. Em seguida, os frutos foram levados à câmara fria, a 12±2°C, onde permaneceram por 12 horas prévias ao processamento. O processamento constituiu na retirada da casca e das extremidades para a obtenção dos frutos inteiros. Para a obtenção das metades, foi realizado um corte no sentido longitudinal da fruta descascada e, para obtenção das rodelas, foram realizados cortes, a cada 2 cm, transversais à altura do fruto descascado. Os tratamentos assim obtidos foram acondicionados em contentores de tereftalato de polietileno transparente e com tampa, com capacidade de 1.000 mL (marca Neoform® N-94). As embalagens foram armazenadas em expositores refrigerados a 3°C, por um período de 16 dias, sendo as análises realizadas a cada 4 dias. O delineamento adotado foi o inteiramente casualizado, num esquema fatorial 3x5: três processamentos e cinco datas de amostragem (0;4;8;12 e 16 dias), com três repetições por tratamento. Avaliaram-se a perda de massa fresca, os teores de sólidos solúveis (SS), acidez titulável (AT), a relação (SS/AT), ácido ascórbico, além da análise sensorial dos produtos. Os frutos inteiros foram os preferidos quanto à intenção de compra e apresentaram melhores resultados quanto ao teor de sólidos solúveis, de acidez titulável, relação sólidos solúveis/acidez titulável e teor de ácido ascórbico. A maior perda de massa fresca foi verificada no processamento em rodelas.

This review presents the latest advances of the mechanisation in sample preparation using microwave oven. The fundamental principles of microwaves field interaction with matter are presented, followed by the basic principles of microwave equipment construction. Hyphenation of microwave oven with flow injection analysis or robotic are discussed as well as some metodological difficulties and solutions by its implementation.

Alumina supported niobium oxide was prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of NbCl5. The alumina was calcined and pretreated at differents temperatures in order to vary the density of OH groups on the surface which was determined by thermogravimetric analysis. A good correlation was found between the amount of anchored niobium and the total number of anionic sites (oxide and hydroxyl groups) on the surface of the alumina. The infrared spectra on the OH stretching region indicate that OH groups coordinated to at least one tetrahedral aluminum were more reactive towards NbCl5.

This work shows some laboratory waste management developed in order to recover some elements or to prepare the waste for a correct final disposal. The 25 elements chosen cover basically all chemical behaviors found for the metals in the Periodic Table. The treatments adopted were based on the classical behavior in aqueous solution (wet chemistry) but an important condition for a full success was the previous knowledge of the qualitative composition of the wastes treated. Some general trends were found: the final liquid waste was always saline and normally presented a higher volume than the original waste; most original wastes were acid in nature; steps such as solid-liquid separation, washing, evaporating and calcining were currently performed. This work was also a very good experience in chemistry in solution for students and showed them the need of treating wastes for a better environment.

Curral Velho es una comunitat tradicional, situada al nord-est de Brasil, que manté una relació directa amb els ecosistemes que la envolten. La comunitat depèn del estat de conservació del medi natura, ja que obtenen diferents serveis ecositemics. En aquest territori es desenvolupen dos tipus d’economies amb unes bases molt diferents. Una economia tradicional, desenvolupada per la pròpia comunitat, que es basa en la propietat col·lectiva del territori i en optimitzar a llarg termini els beneficis que s’obtenen del medi; y un altre com la camaronicultura, la base de la qual es la obtenció de beneficis a curt termini i amb un territori de propietat privada. Aquesta superposició de models de producció genera impactes ambientals, i un conflicte socio-ambiental entre la comunitat i els que desenvolupen la camaronicultura. L’objectiu es realitzar un estudi econòmic de la pesca artesanal de Curral Velho caracteritzant manera de viure, creant una base de dades sobre pesca artesanal i elaborant indicador de beneficis econòmics generats per la pesca artesanal. Per contextualitzar els resultats es va fer un anàlisis de les dos economies existents a la comunitat. Els resultats obtinguts en primer lloc són que l’economia d’explotació intensiva aporta més guanys per les persones de la comunitat que tenen un relació directa que les que es dediquen a la pesca artesanal, però es important no aturar-se aquí: s’ha de realitzar un anàlisis més profund. Com a conclusió, la activitat pesquera es més rentable a llarg termini ja que els recursos extrets de manera sostenible i així són il·limitats y accessibles a tota la comunitat. A diferència de la camaronicultura, la pesca artesanal no genera desigualtats socials ni vulneracions dels drets humans. Tot el contrari, genera forts vincles entre els individus de la comunitat basats en el treball en equip i l’aprenentatge vivencial e intergeneracional.

MIPs are synthetic polymers that are used as biomimetic materials simulating the mechanism verified in natural entities such as antibodies and enzymes. Although MIPs have been successfully used as an outstanding tool for enhancing the selectivity or different analytical approaches, such as separation science and electrochemical and optical sensors, several parameters must be optimized during their synthesis. Therefore, the state-of-the-art of MIP production as well as the different polymerization methods are discussed. The potential selectivity of MIPs in the extraction and separation techniques focusing mainly on environmental, clinical and pharmaceutical samples as applications for analytical purposes is presented.

The modern stopped-flow reaction analyzer has shown high efficiency and flexibility, which provides outstanding sample economy with a dead-time of less than 1 ms. However the cost of the equipment imposes a serious restriction to many Brazilian scientists and teachers. In this work we describe the construction of a low-cost stopped-flow system coupled to a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The performance of the system was checked by monitoring the kinetics of two reactions: the fading of phenolphthalein in aqueous alkaline solution and the chlorophyll a demetallation in acid medium. The apparatus showed reasonable efficiency with a dead-time of 0.3 to 0.5 s. The very good results obtained in these two illustrative processes show that the system is satisfactory for determining rate constants with mean reaction times ranging from seconds to minutes.

The hydrated sodium salt of EDTA, Na2H2Y·2H2O, cannot be used as a primary standard for titrations due to uncertainties in the water content. An alkalimetric titration of the homogenized solid in the presence of a small excess of BaCl2·2H2O allows one to titrate quantitatively the released two hydrogen cations with end-point indication by phenolphthalein or potentiometry. This leads one to calculate the average molar mass of the reagent and its water content, allowing to use it to prepare EDTA standard solutions. One titrated sample led to the formula Na2H2Y·1.876 H2O, and 370.01 g.mol-1 for the average molar mass.

La integració en una mateixa activitat d'una explotació ramadera ecològica basada en el bestiar cabrú de llet i d'una formatgeria artesanal basada en varietats autòctones de formatge de cabra, permet ocupar un nínxol de mercat encara poc explotat actualment a Catalunya. D'igual manera, la dificultat que tenen actualment molts dels formatgers artesans del país per trobar llet de cabra en quantitats suficients i amb unes mínimes garanties higiènico-sanitàries dificulten l'avanç d'un sector amb molt bones perspectives de futur com és el de la formatgeria artesanal i justifica la necessitat de crear noves explotacions (o reconvertir-ne de ja existents) orientant-les de ple vers l'aprofitament lleter del bestiar cabrú, que és actualment molt reduït en l'àmbit Català. A més d'això, les actuals exigències en el camp del benestar animal així com en el camp de la qualitat i de la seguretat alimentaria, exigeixen a les explotacions ramaderes i a les indústries alimentàries el compliment d'una sèrie de requisits, tan de disseny dels locals i de les instal•lacions, com de control de les activitats i dels productes elaborats, que garanteixin en tot moment la seva correcte gestió i funcionament en aquestes matèries. L'objectiu d'aquest projecte, doncs, és la legalització d'una activitat, que anomenarem “Mas Peirot, S.L.”, dedicada a l'explotació ramadera ecològica de bestiar cabrú de llet i a la formatgeria artesanal de formatge de cabra. És important mencionar que tot i tractar-se d'un projecte de legalització d'una activitat,, també s'hi han contemplat aspectes i detalls relacionats amb l'execució de la mateixa, al tractar-se d'unes obres d'una certa complexitat i considerant que així es tracten amb més detall i rigorositat les actuacions projectades. En concret, en aquest projecte es planifiquen les operacions de rehabilitació de dues naus ramaderes actualment en desús, per tal que puguin destinar-se a l'explotació ramadera de bestiar cabrú i a la formatgeria artesanal, projectant-se així mateix totes les instal•lacions necessàries per tal que a les mencionades naus s'hi puguin desenvolupar les activitats citades. Com a conclusions més importants d'aquest projecte podem dir que amb un cens de 100 caps de bestiar cabrú és possible obtenir una producció mitjana de llet de 32.500 litres anuals, que es corresponen a un volum total de 3.823 quilograms de formatge a l'any (de les tipologies Formatge Garrotxa i Formatge de cabra amb oli, ambdues varietats tradicionals catalanes) obtenint un benefici de 21.389,47 Euros/any durant els primers 15 anys i un benefici de 33.386,39 Euros/any a partir del 16è any, cosa que permetrà recuperar la inversió inicial de 172.716,76 Euros que valen les naus i instal•lacions projectades, en un termini de 8 anys i permetrà, com s'ha dit, ocupar un nínxol de mercat encara poc explotat per la indústria agroalimentària a Catalunya.

Experiments simple, short and efficient for experimental disciplines in undergraduate courses in Chemistry are an excellent opportunity for students to consolidate the learning of theoretical concepts in classical chemical transformations. The use of a safe reagent, of low cost and easy access is the motivation for this communication, that describes the use of trichloroisocyanuric acid - a chlorinating agent used in the treatment of swimming pool water - for the chlorination of acetanilide, an intermediate in the preparation of para-chloroaniline.

This work deals with paint decomposition methods for major, minor and trace elements determination. Three methods were investigated: (1) decomposition in closed quartz vessel and heating in microwave oven; (2) decomposition in open vessel using HNO3 and ashing, following the ASTM D 3335-85a method; and (3) decomposition in open vessel using HNO3 + HF and ashing. Paints of different types and colours were analyzed, in which several elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). It was observed that method (1) is appropriate for trace, minor and major elements determination, while method (3) is appropriate for Ti.

This works proposes a homemade construction of a lead(II) ISE of solid membrane (Ag2S/PbS) to determine Pb2+ ions in potentiometric titrations, using damaged combined glass electrodes. This electrode can be constructed in teaching laboratories, using it as a learning tool related to the theoretical principle of ISE. The analytical curve obtained (y = 27.056x + 337.58; R = 0.996) was linear on the range of 1 x 10-5 to 1 mol L-1 and has presented a very close behavior of the Nernstian. The homemade ISE has presented a similar selectivity to the commercial electrodes, showing to be a good alternative to the experimental activities on teaching laboratories.

This review attempts to provide an updated overview of the Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Ruged and Safe (QuEChERS) multiresidue extraction method, that involves initial extraction in acetonitrile, an extraction/partition step after the addition of salt, and a cleanup step utilizing dispersive solid phase extraction. QuEChERS method is nowadays the most applied extraction method for the determination of pesticide residues in food samples, providing acceptable recoveries for acidic, neutral and basic pesticides. Several applications for various food matrices (fruits, vegetables, cereals and others) in combination with chromatographic mass spectrometry analysis were presented.

Humans are exposed to a variety of chemicals from the consumption of food, including undesirable compounds such as pesticides and mycotoxins. Chemical human risk assessment is a process intended to estimate the risk to a given population from the exposure to a chemical (or to a chemical group having the same mechanism of action). The process consists of four steps, namely hazard identification, hazard characterization, exposure assessment and risk characterization. Chemical dietary risk assessment is an essential procedure to establish safe food standards. In this review the tools and data sources currently used in the risk assessment process will be discussed.

Pyrohydrolysis is proposed for fossil fuels sample preparation for further fluorine and chlorine determination. Samples were heated during 10 min at temperatures up to 1000 °C. Water vapor was passed through the reactor and the volatile products were condensed and collected in NH4OH solution. Fluoride was determined by potentiometry using an ion selective electrode (ISE) and Cl by ICP OES and DRC-ICP-MS. The results are in good agreement with certified values and the precision is better than 10% (n = 4). Sample preparation by means of pyrohydrolysis is relatively simple, whereas chlorine and fluorine can be determined at low concentrations.
