The immune responses are mediated by a variety of cells that, when activated, produce a number of molecules. Macrophages are the first cells to take part in the immune response releasing many compounds in the extracellular environment such as H2O2. Taking into account this aspect we evaluated the activation of an immunological system, in vitro, by determining the H2O2 released in cultures of peritoneal macrophage cells from Swiss mice in the presence of organopalladated compounds of the type [Pd(dmba)(X)(dppp)], dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine, dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphine)propane, X = Cl, N3, NCO, NCS. An excellent activation of macrophages by the [Pd(dmba)(X)(dppp)] compounds was observed and the influence of the X ligand on the immune response could be verified.

Methane, the main constituent of natural gas (> 85%), is employed in large scale as an energy source (thermoelectric power plants, automobiles, etc). However, significant quantities of this gas contribute to the greenhouse effect. The catalytic combustion of methane can minimize these emissions. Palladium is one of the metals that shows the highest activity, depending on the different active forms of the metal. In this article, we focus on the influence of particle size and pretreatment on the catalytic performance of palladium in the methane combustion reaction.

This work deals with the use of the cyclometallated compound [Pd(dmba)(N3)(PPh3)] in homogeneous catalytic processes comprising the reductive N-carbonylation of nitrobenzene and p-nitrotoluene to ethyl-phenylcarbamate and ethyl-4-methylphenylcarbamate, respectively. The cyclopalladated compound was also employed in the synthesis of urea derivatives by reacting p-nitrotoluene and m-nitrotoluene, respectively, with p-toluidine and and m-chloroaniline.

Novel modified electrodes bearing dispersed Pd and Pt particles have been prepared from poly (allyl ether of the p-benzenesulfonic acid) films with incorporated nickel particles making use of galvanic displacement reactions. The SEM analysis of the new modified electrodes revealed efficient deposition of Pd but weak up-take of Pt. Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of several classes of organic substrates were carried out using the MEs Ni, Ni/Pd and Ni/Pt. The Ni/Pd ME showed to be the best of them for the hydrogenation of double, triple and carbonyl bonds. The complete hydrogenation of the aromatic rings for the well-adsorbed substrates acetophenone and benzophenone is noteworthy.

WO3-ZrO2 catalysts promoted with Pt and Pd were tested as paraffin isomerization catalysts using n-hexane as model compound. Sulfur and amine poisoning and regeneration tests were used to assess the impact of the addition of Pt and Pd on the deactivation resistance and regenerability. Pt and PtPd catalysts were the most active for n-hexane isomerization. The low activity of the Pd catalyst was attributed to poor Pd metal properties when supported over WO3-ZrO2 and to a decrease of the number of BrQnsted acid sites. PtPd was the only catalyst capable of full regeneration after S poisoning. Amine poisoning completely supressed the isomerization activity and the original activity could only be restored by calcination and reduction.

Two complexes of Rh(I) and Pd(II) with chloride and tridecylamine ligands were obtained and characterized by Elementary Analysis and by XPS and FTIR spectroscopies. Complexes anchored on γ-Al2O3 were tested in the styrene semi-hydrogenation reaction carried out in the absence or presence of a sulfur poison. Although both low loaded catalysts were highly selective, the Pd(II) complex was three times more active than the Rh(I) complex. The rhodium complex was more sulfur resistant but less active than the palladium complex. Differences in conversion and sulfur resistance between both complexes could be related to electronic and/or geometric effects.

Automotive catalyst, using in Brazil since 1992, is a essential technology for vehicular emissions control. Noble metals are the active phase of these catalysts, and cerium zirconium mixed oxides (CZ), responsibles for the oxygen storage capacity (OSC), one of the most important aspect for the operational performance of the catalyst. In this context, the oxireduction properties analysis of CZ and Pd/CZ (palladium supported in CZ) system are the objective of this study, as well as, the impact of the thermal aging in the OSC. Aging consisted of treatments at 900 or 1200 °C, for 12 or 36 h, in oxidizing condition.

Nickel and palladium dispersed on titania support were submitted to reductive treatment, under hydrogen, at 200 and 500 ºC. After the reductive thermal treatment the materials were exposed to carbon monoxide (10 Torr) and analyzed in the infrared region. The increasing of the electronic density in the metallic d subshell, produced by the reductive thermal treatment, was monitored by the infrared stretching band shift of carbon monoxide adsorbed and it was interpreted as a consequence of the metal-support interactions. The highest effect was observed for Pd/TiO2 system. From the FTIR spectra was also observed that the hydrogen spillover was stronger on Pd/TiO2 than Ni/TiO2 system.

Ciclopaladados diméricos do tipo [Pd(dmba)(m-X)]2 (dmba = N,N-dimetilbenzilamina; X = Cl, N3, NCO) reagem com tiouréia (tu), à temperatura ambiente, resultando espécies mononucleares do tipo [Pd(dmba)(X)(tu)].
