This chapter reviews studies on the effects of mycotoxins on embryonic and fetal development, especially those toxins that are global food and feed contaminants. The toxins discussed include aflatoxin produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus, ochratoxin which is produced by Aspergillus species particularly A. ochraceus as well as Penicillium verrucosum, ergot alkaloids produced by Claviceps spp., and the Fusarium toxins (fumonisins, deoxynivalenol [vomitoxin], and zearalenone). These toxins have been shown to be teratogenic and/or embryotoxic in different animal bioassays. The implications of toxicity on embryogenesis, and the progress of research on these mycotoxins, are also examined.

Objective: To quantify the neuronal and glial cell pathology in the hippocampus and the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) of 8 cases of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Material: tau-immunolabeled sections of the temporal lobe of 8 diagnosed cases of PSP. Method: The densities of lesions were measured in the PHG, CA sectors of the hippocampus and the dentate gyrus (DG) and studied using spatial pattern analysis. Results: Neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) and abnormally enlarged neurons (EN) were most frequent in the PHG and in sector CA1 of the hippocampus, oligodendroglial inclusions (“coiled bodies”) (GI) in the PHG, subiculum, sectors CA1 and CA2, and neuritic plaques (NP) in sectors CA2 and CA4. The DG was the least affected region. Vacuolation and GI were observed in the alveus. No tufted astrocytes (TA) were observed. Pathological changes exhibited clustering, the lesions often exhibiting a regular distribution of the clusters parallel to the tissue boundary. There was a positive correlation between the degree of vacuolation in the alveus and the densities of NFT in CA1 and GI in CA1 and CA2. Conclusion: The pathology most significantly affected the output pathways of the hippocampus, lesions were topographically distributed, and hippocampal pathology may be one factor contributing to cognitive decline in PSP.

In eight cases of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) were numerous in the substantia nigra (SN), red nucleus (RN), locus caeruleus (LC), pontine nuclei (PN), and inferior olivary nucleus (ION) and abnormally enlarged neurons (EN) in the ION, LC and PN. Loss of Purkinje cells was evident in the cerebellum. Tufted astrocytes (TA) were abundant in the striatum, SN and RN and glial inclusions ('coiled bodies') (GI) in the midbrain (SN, RN) and pons (LC). Neuritic plaques were frequent in one case. NFT, GI, and TA densities were uncorrelated in most areas. NFT and EN densities were positively correlated in the midbrain and surviving neurons and disease duration in several areas. These results suggest: 1) predominantly subcortical pathology in PSP with widespread NFT while TA and GI have a more localized distribution, 2) little correlation between neuronal and glial pathologies, and 3) shorter duration cases may be more likely to develop cortical pathology. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare, degenerative disorder of the brain believed to affect between 1.39 and 6.6 individuals per 100,000 of the population. The disorder is likely to be more common than suggested by these data due to difficulties in diagnosis and especially in distinguishing PSP from other conditions with similar symptoms such as multiple system atrophy (MSA), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), and Parkinson’s disease (PD). PSP was first described in 1964 by Steele, Richardson and Olszewski and originally called Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome. The disorder is the second commonest syndrome in which the patient exhibits ‘parkinsonism’, viz., a range of problems involving movement most typically manifest in PD itself but also seen in PSP, MSA and CBD. Although primarily a brain disorder, patients with PSP exhibit a range of visual clinical signs and symptoms that may be useful in differential diagnosis. Hence, the present article describes the general clinical and pathological features of PSP, its specific visual signs and symptoms, discusses the usefulness of these signs in differential diagnosis, and considers the various treatment options.

Aims: To quantify white matterpathology in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Material: Histological sections of white matter of 8 PSP and 8 control cases \Method: Densities and spatial patterns of vacuolation, glial cell nuclei, and glial inclusions (GI) were measured in 8cortical and subcortical fiber tracts. Results: No GI wereobserved in control fiber tracts. Densities of vacuoles and glial cell nuclei were greater in PSP than in controls. In PSP, density of vacuoles was greatest in the alveus, frontopontine fibers (FPF), and central tegmental tract (CTT), and densities of glial cell nuclei were greater in cortical than subcortical regions. The highest densities of GI were observed in the basal ganglia, FPF, cerebellum, andsuperior frontal gyrus (SFG). Vacuoles, glialcells and GI were distributed randomly, uniformly,in regularly distributed clusters, or in large clusters across fiber tracts. GI wermore frequently distributed in regular clusters than the vacuoles and glial cell nuclei.Vacuoles, glial cell nuclei, and GI were not spatially correlated. Conclusions: The data suggest significant degeneration of white matter in PSP, vacuolation being related to neuronal loss in adjacent gray matterregions,GI the result of abnormal tau released from damaged axons, and gliosis a responseto these changes. © 2013.

The effects of lead exposure may endure through one's lifetime and can negatively effect educational performance. While the link between the cause and effects of lead poisoning has been identified, the application of lead health education as the mechanism of disease prevention has not. The purpose of this study was to examine whether caregiver participation in a family-based educational intervention can result in decreased lead exposure in low socioeconomic children. ^ Participants (n = 50) were caregivers of children 12 to 36 months of age. They were randomly selected from an urban clinic and randomly assigned to either a treatment or control group. The experimental design of this study involved two clinic visits. Parents in the treatment group were given the educational intervention during the first clinic visit while those in the control group were given the intervention during the second clinic visit. The intervention was reinforced with a lead education brochure coupled with a video on childhood lead poisoning. One instrument was used to test parental knowledge of lead poisoning both pre- and post-intervention. Blood lead levels in pediatric participants were tested using two blood lead screens approximately three to four months apart determined by well-child check-up schedules. ^ Findings from the analysis of variance showed the interaction between the change in blood lead level between the children's first and second clinic visits and the treatment level. This demonstrated a significant interaction between the differences of first and second clinic visits blood lead levels and the presence or absence of the educational intervention. ^ The findings from an analysis of covariance support that caregivers in the treatment group have significantly higher scores on the second clinic visit scores on the CLKT than the caregivers in the control group. These data suggest that the educational treatment is effective in increasing the knowledge of caregivers about the dangers of lead poisoning and the strategies for lead poisoning prevention. ^ Conclusions indicate that the education of adult caregivers can affect blood lead levels of children, the educational treatment increased the knowledge of caregivers, caregivers were able to carry out procedures taught, and caregivers retained knowledge over time. ^

My paper discusses three different ways in which stray dogs have been intertwined with ideologies of economic and urban development in Romania. I categorize results from archival and ethnographic research under three major time periods: early socialism, late socialism, and post-socialism. During early socialism stray dogs were seen to be damaging the soviet economy by killing species that humans could also hunt, like rabbits. During late socialism, stray dogs appeared as the enemies of the communist city, and the department of urban sanitation was given orders to poison dogs with strychnine. Finally, the increasing number of stray dogs in Bucharest after the collapse of communism was seen as a direct result of former communist demolitions, and was also taken as a sign of the collapsing state. Through such examples my paper discusses how the state and particular population groups have seen dogs as parts of an unwanted and dangerous nature, rather than a species that needs to be protected. I argue that distinctions of nature and culture have served discourses of civilization and the view of Bucharest as a model socialist, and then European city. Throughout my paper I juxtapose the treatment of stray dogs with other, more “valued” urban natures like the protection of parks, the wide-spread hobby of pigeon breeding during socialist years, the most recent debate on saving the rural area of Rosia Montana from non-environmentally friendly methods of gold extraction, and the current trend of healthy eating and living.

Reported accidents involving the poisoning scorpions are still frequent in Brazil, mainly caused by Tityus serrulatus, known as yellow scorpion. Although antivenom sera are produced routinely by various government laboratories, the effectiveness of its use depends on how quickly treatment is initiated and efficiency in the production of antibodies by the immunized animals. In this study, the development of cationic polymeric nanoparticles of poly(lactic acid) aimed to create a modified delivery system for peptides and proteins of T. serrulatus venom, able to enhance the production of serum antibodies against the scorpion toxins. The cationic nanoparticles were obtained by a low energy nanoprecipitation, after study of the parameters’ variations effects over the physicochemical properties of the particles. The surface functionalization of the nanoparticles with the hyperbranched polyethyleneimine was proved by zeta potential analysis and enabled the adsorption by electrostatic interaction of different types of proteins. The protein loading efficiency of 40-80 % to bovine serum albumin (BSA) and 100 % to scorpion venom peptides evaluated by spectrophotometry and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis confirmed the success of the selected parameters established for obtainment of nanoparticles, produced with size between 100 to 250 nm. The atomic force microscopy analysis and in vitro release showed that the spherical nanoparticles provided a sustained release profile of proteins by diffusion mechanism, demonstrating the potential for application of the nanoparticles in vivo.
