Two series of poly(L,L-lactide-b-ethylene glycol-b-L,L-lactide) copolymers, PLA-PEO-PLA, were synthesized by polymerization Of L,L-lactide using a dihydroxy-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (M-n = 4000 or 600 g/mol) as coinitiator and stannous 2-ethylhexanoate, Sn(Oct)(2), as initiator. The synthesized copolymers have shown high stereoregularity as observed by C-13 NMR analyses. The nanoparticles were prepared by using a solvent diffusion method and the self-assemblage process and were characterized by NMR and SEM. It was possible to conclude that the self-assembled particles presented a core-shell structure characterized by a hydrophobic PLA core and a hydrophilic PEG shell, thus the NMR of the aqueous solutions indicated a quasi-solid behavior for the particles` interior. The diameters of the spherical particles as observed by SEM were in the 50-250 nm range, depending on the copolymer composition and the preparation procedure.

Due to rain events historical monuments exposed to the atmosphere are frequently submitted to wet and dry cycles. During drying periods wetness is maintained in some confined regions and the corrosion product layer, generally denominated patinas, builds up and gets thicker. The aim of this study is to use electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of pure copper coated with two artificial patina layers and submitted either to continuous or to intermittent immersion tests, this latter aiming to simulate wet and dry cycles. The experiments were performed in 0.1 mol dm(-3) NaCl solution and in artificial rainwater containing the most significant pollutants of the city of Sao Paulo. The results of the continuous immersion tests in the NaCl solution have shown that the coated samples behave like a porous electrode with finite pore length. On the other hand, in the intermittent tests a porous electrode response with semi-infinite pore length can be developed. The results were interpreted based on the model of de Levie and a critical comparison with previous interpretations reported in the literature for similar systems is presented. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. BACKGROUND: The use of the volatile salt ammonium carbamate in protein downstream processing has recently been proposed. The main advantage of using volatile salts is that they can be removed from precipitates and liquid effluents through pressure reduction or temperature increase. Although previous studies showed that ammonium carbamate is efficient as a precipitant agent, there was evidence of denaturation in some enzymes. In this work, the effect of ammonium carbamate on the stability of five enzymes was evaluated. RESULTS: Activity assays showed that alpha-amylase (1,4-alpha-D-glucan glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.1), lysozyme (1,4-beta-N-acetylmuramoylhydrolase, EC 3.2.1.17) and lipase (triacyl glycerol acyl hydrolase, EC 3.1.1.3) did not undergo activity loss in ammonium carbamate solutions with concentrations from 1.0 to 5.0 mol kg(-1), whereas cellulase complex (1,4-(1,3 : 14)-beta-D-glucan 4-glucano-hydrolase, EC 3.2.1.4) and peroxidase (hydrogen peroxide oxidoreductase, EC 1.11.1.7) showed an average activity loss of 55% and 44%, respectively. Precipitation assays did not show enzyme denaturation or phase separation for alpha-amylase and lipase, while celullase and peroxidase precipitated with some activity reduction. Analysis of similar experiments with ammonium and sodium sulfate did not affect the activity of enzymes. CONCLUSION: Celullase and peroxidase were denatured by ammonium carbamate. While more systematic studies are not available, care must be taken in designing a protein precipitation with this salt. The results suggest that the generally accepted idea that salts that denature proteins tend to solubilize them does not hold for ammonium carbamate. (C) 2010 Society of Chemical Industry

An experimental investigation of the kinetics of cationic polymerization of beta-pinene was performed using two different initiator systems under two different operating conditions (shot additions of initiator, and continuous feeding of monomer). The experiments were done using calorimetric measurements under isoperibolic conditions. The heat of polymerization of beta-pinene was found to be -30.6 kcal . mol(-1). A simple kinetic model was tentatively proposed, and the model fit reasonably well to the different experimental runs. Different values of the fitting parameters were obtained for runs carried out under different conditions, which can probably be ascribed to the presence of adventitious impurities in the commercial-grade monomer used.

In order to lower the excessive costs of metallic prosthesis materia Is alternatives to Ti and Ti alloys have been searched. in this study, the corrosion resistance of the DIN 1.4575 superferritic stainless steel, either solution annealed or solution annealed and aged at 475 degrees C for periods varying from 100 to 1080 h, was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization methods in Hanks` solution. The solution annealed and the aged for 1080 h samples were also tested using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in a 0.1 mol/L NaCl solution at 25 degrees C. The EIS results showed that the corrosion resistance of the DIN 1.4575 steel decreases with heat treatment time at 475 degrees C probably due to alpha prime formation. Besides the diminution of the overall impedance values, the low frequency limit of the Nyquist diagrams show a progressive change from an almost capacitive response to a resistive behavior as the heat treatment time increases. Pitting corrosion resistance also decreased with aging time at 475 degrees C.

In this work, the effect of cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) addition on the polymerization of bis-[triethoxysilyl]ethane (BTSE) film applied on carbon steel was studied. The electrochemical characterization of the films was carried out in 0.1 mol L(-1) NaCl solution by open-circuit potential measurements, anodic and cathodic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Morphological and chemical characterization were performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle measurements, infrared-spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric analysis. The results have clearly shown the improvement on the protective properties of the Ce(4+) modified film as a consequence of the formation of a more uniform and densely reticulated silane film. A mechanism is proposed to explain the accelerating role of Ce(4+) ions on the cross-linking of the silane layer. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electrochemical behaviour of carbon steel coated with bis-[trimethoxysilylpropyl]amine (BTSPA) filled with silica nanoparticles in naturally aerated 0.1 mol L-1 NaCl solutions was evaluated. The coating was prepared by adding different concentrations of silica nanoparticles (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm) to the hydrolysis solution and then a second layer without silica nanoparticles was applied. The electrochemical behavior of the coated steel was evaluated by means of open-circuit potential (E-OC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves. Surface characterization was made by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and its hydrophobicity assessed by contact angle measurements. EIS diagrams have shown an improvement of the barrier properties of the silane layer with the silica addition, which was further improved on the bi-layer system. However, a dependence on the filler concentration was verified, and the best electrochemical response was obtained for samples modified with 300 ppm of silica nanoparticles. AFM images have shown a homogeneous distribution of the silica nanoparticles on the sample surface; however particles agglomeration was detected, which degraded the corrosion protection performance. The results were explained on the basis of the improvement of the barrier properties of the coating due to the filler addition and on the onset of defective regions on the more heavily filled coatings allowing easier electrolyte penetration. Controlling the surface properties of nanoparticles using ionic dopants prone to be surface segregated has emerged as an interesting tool for obtaining highly selective and sensitive sensors. In this work, the surface segregation of Cd cations on SnO2 nanopowders prepared by the Pechini`s method was studied by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and specific surface area analysis. We observed that the surface chemistry modifications caused by the surface segregation of Cd and the large specific surface area were closely responsible for a rapid and regular electrical response of 5 mol% Cd-doped SnO2 films to 100 ppm propane and NO, diluted in dry air at relatively low temperature (100 degrees C). Thermoluminescence (TL) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) properties of KAlSi(3)O(8):Mn glasses obtained through the sol gel technique were investigated. Samples were obtained with five different molar concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 mol% of manganese. Transmission Electronic Microscopy (TEM) indicated the occurrence of nanoparticles composed by glass matrix elements with Mn. Best results for TL response were obtained with 0.5 mol% Mn doped sample, which exhibits a TL peak at 180 degrees C. The TL spectrum of this sample presents a broad emission band from 450 to 700 nm with a peak at 575 nm approximately. The emission band fits very well with the characteristic lines of the Mn(2+) emission features. According to this fact, the band at 410 nm can be ascribed to (6)A(1)(S) -> (4)A(1)(G), (4)E(G) transition, while the 545 nm band can be attributed to the superposition of the transitions (6)A(1)(S) -> (4)T(2)(G) and (6)A(1)(S) -> (4)T(1)(G). The dependence of the TL response with the energy of X-rays (27-41 keV) showed a small decrease of the TL intensity in the high energy region. Excitation with blue LEDs showed OSL in the UV region with a fast decay component. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study evaluates the possibility of replacing the hexavalent chromium passivation treatment used as a sealer after phosphating of carbon steel (SAE 1010) by a treatment with niobium ammonium oxalate (Ox). Samples of carbon steel (SAE 1010) after being phosphated in a zinc phosphate bath (PZn + Ni) were immersed in solution of niobium ammonium oxalate (250 mg L(-1) of Nb) either at pH 3.0 or pH 8.0. A passivation treatment with a solution with CrO(3) (200 mg L(-1) of Cr(6+)) was also used for reference. The corrosion resistance of the phosphated samples after passivation treatments was analyzed in a NaCl 0.5 mol L(-1) solution using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and anodic polarization curves. Salt spray tests were also performed to evaluate their corrosion resistance. The results showed that the highest corrosion resistance was obtained by passivation in a solution with (250 mg L(-1) of Nb) at pH 8.0. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work investigates the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cystamine and cystamine-glutaraldehyde on a screen-printed electrode, and the immobilization of the Tc85 protein (from Trypanosoma cruzi) on these monolayers. The methods used included infrared techniques, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The electrochemical studies were performed at pH 6.9 in 0.1 mol L(-1) phosphate buffer solution containing Fe(CN)(6)(-3/-4) redox species. The surface coverage (0) of the electrode was 0.10 (cystamine), 0.35 (cystamine-glutaraldehyde) and 0.84 (Tc85). Interpretation of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results was based on a charge-transfer reaction involving Fe(CN)(6)(-3/-4) species at high frequencies, followed by a diffusion through the monolayers at lower frequencies. Estimates of the electrode surface coverage, active site radius, and distance between two adjacent sites assumed that charge transfer occurred at the active sites, and that there was a planar diffusion of redox species to these sites. A new species of Gesneriaceae discovered in remnants of deciduous forests on limestone outcrops in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is described and compared with morphologically related taxa. This plant presents the diagnostic features of the tribe Gloxinieae, but a unique combination of morphological traits distinguishes this taxon from previously described genera. Its phylogenetic position was inferred based on analyzing DNA sequences variation of five loci: the rpl1 intron, rps16 intron, trnL-F intron-spacer, a portion of the plastid-expressed glutamine synthetase gene (ncpGS) and the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS). Molecular phylogenetic analyses confirm the position of this new species in the Gloxinieae, as a sister lineage of a clade including the Brazilian genera Mandirola and Goyazia. However, tests using topological constraints do not reject the alternative relationship that places this taxon with Gloxiniopsis in a monophyletic group. To accomodate this species in the current generic circumscription of gloxinieae, the new genus chautemsia A.O. Araujo V.C. Souza is created.

We measured CO(2) efflux from wood for Eucalyptus in Hawaii for 7 years and compared these measurements with those on three-and four-and-a-half-year-old Eucalyptus in Brazil. In Hawaii, CO(2) efflux from wood per unit biomass declined similar to 10x from age two to age five, twice as much as the decline in tree growth. The CO(2) efflux from wood in Brazil was 8-10x lower than that for comparable Hawaii trees with similar growth rates. Growth and maintenance respiration coefficients calculated from Hawaii wood CO(2) efflux declined with tree age and size (the growth coefficient declined from 0.4 mol C efflux mol C(-1) wood growth at age one to 0.1 mol C efflux mol C(-1) wood growth at age six; the maintenance coefficient from 0.006 to 0.001 mu mol C (mol C biomass)(-1) s(-1) at 20 degrees C over the same time period). These results suggest interference with CO(2) efflux through bark that decouples CO(2) efflux from respiration. We also compared the biomass fractions and wood CO(2) efflux for the aboveground woody parts for 3- and 7-year-old trees in Hawaii to estimate how focusing measurements near the ground might bias the stand-level estimates of wood CO(2) efflux. Three-year-old Eucalyptus in Hawaii had a higher proportion of branches < 0.5 cm in diameter and a lower proportion of stem biomass than did 7-year-old trees. Biomass-specific CO(2) efflux measured at 1.4 m extrapolated to the tree could bias tree level estimates by similar to 50%, assuming no refixation from bark photosynthesis. However, the bias did not differ for the two tree sizes. Foliar respiration was identical per unit nitrogen for comparable treatments in Brazil and Hawaii (4.2 mu mol C mol N(-1) s(-1) at 20 degrees C).

We examined resource limitations on growth and carbon allocation in a fast-growing, clonal plantation of Eucalyptus grandis x urophylla in Brazil by characterizing responses to annual rainfall, and response to irrigation and fertililization for 2 years. Productivity measures included gross primary production (GPP), total belowground carbon allocation (TBCA), bole growth, and net ecosystem production (NEP). Replicate plots within a single plantation were established at the midpoint of the rotation (end of year 3), with treatments of no additional fertilization or irrigation, heavy fertilization (to remove any nutrient limitation), irrigation (to remove any water limitation), and irrigation plus fertilization. Rainfall was unusually high in the first year (1769mm) of the experiment, and control plots had high rates of GPP (6.64 kg C m(-2) year(-1)), TBCA (2.14 kg C m(-2) year(-1)), and bole growth (1.81 kg C m(-2) year). Irrigation increased each of these rates by 15-17%. The second year of the experiment had average rainfall (1210 mm), and lower rainfall decreased production in control plots by 46% (GPP), 52% (TBCA), and 40% (bole growth). Fertilization treatments had neglible effects. The response to irrigation was much greater in the drier year, with irrigated plots exceeding the production in control plots by 83% (GPP), 239% (TBCA), and 24% (bole growth). Even though the rate of irrigation ensured no water limitation to tree growth, the high rainfall year showed higher production in irrigated plots for both GPP (38% greater than in drier year) and bole growth (23% greater). Varying humidity and supplies of water led to a range in NEP of 0.8-2.7 kg C m(-2) year. This difference between control and irrigated treatments, combined with differences between drier and wetter years, indicated a strong response of these Eucalyptus trees to both water supply and atmospheric humidity during the dry season. The efficiency of converting light energy into fixed carbon ranged from a low of 0.027 mol C to a high of 0.060 mol C per mol of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR), and the efficiency of bolewood production ranged from 0.78 to 1.98 g wood per MJ of APAR. Irrigation increased the efficiency of wood production per unit of water used from 2.55 kg wood m(-3) in the rainfed plot to 3.51 kg m(-3) in irrigated plots. Detailed information on the response of C budgets to environmental conditions and resource supplies will be necessary for accurate predictions of plantation yields across years and landscapes.
