Leukotriene B-4 (LTB4) mediates different inflammatory events such as neutrophil migration and pain. The present study addressed the mechanisms of LTB4-mediated joint inflammation-induced hypernociception. It was observed that zymosan-induced articular hypernociception and neutrophil migration were reduced dose-dependently by the pretreatment with MK886 (1-9 mg/kg; LT synthesis inhibitor) as well as in 5-lypoxygenase-deficient mice (5LO(-/-)) or by the selective antagonist of the LTB4 receptor (CP105696; 3 mg/kg). Histological analysis showed reduced zymosan-induced articular inflammatory damage in 5LO(-/-) mice. The hypernociceptive role of LTB4 was confirmed further by the demonstration that joint injection of LTB4 induces a dose (8.3, 25, and 75 ng)-dependent articular hypernociception. Furthermore, zymosan induced an increase in joint LTB4 production. Investigating the mechanism underlying LTB4 mediation of zymosan-induced hypernociception, LTB4-induced hypernociception was reduced by indomethacin (5 mg/kg), MK886 (3 mg/kg), celecoxib (10 mg/kg), antineutrophil antibody (100 mu g, two doses), and fucoidan (20 mg/kg) treatments as well as in 5LO(-/-) mice. The production of LTB4 induced by zymosan in the joint was reduced by the pretreatment with fucoidan or antineutrophil antibody as well as the production of PGE(2) induced by LTB4. Therefore, besides reinforcing the role of endogenous LTB4 as an important mediator of inflamed joint hypernociception, these results also suggested that the mechanism of LTB4-induced articular hypernociception depends on prostanoid and neutrophil recruitment. Furthermore, the results also demonstrated clearly that LTB4-induced hypernociception depends on the additional release of endogenous LTs. Concluding, targeting LTB4 synthesis/action might constitute useful therapeutic approaches to inhibit articular inflammatory hypernociception.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychotomimetic constituent of the Cannabis sativa plant that inhibits behavioral and cardiovascular responses to aversive situations. facilitating 5-HT(1A)-mediated neurotransmission. Previous results from our group suggest that the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) may be involved in CBD`s anti-aversive effects. To investigate whether the cardiovascular effects of the CBD could involve a direct drug effect on the BNST, we evaluated the effects of CBD microinjection into this structure on baroreflex activity. We also verified whether these effects were mediated by the activation of 5-HT(1A) receptors. Bilateral microinjection of CBD (60 nmol/100 nL) into the BNST increased the bradycardiac response to arterial pressure increases. However, no changes were observed in tachycardiac responses evoked by arterial pressure decreases. Pretreatment of the BNST with the selective 5-HT(1A) receptor antagonist WAY100635 (0.37 nmol/100 nL) prevented CBD effects on the baroreflex activity. Moreover, microinjection of the 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT (4 nmol/100 nL) caused effects that were similar to those observed after the microinjection of CBD, which were also blocked by pretreatment with WAY100635. In conclusion, the present studies show that the microinjection of CBD into the BNST has a facilitatory influence on the baroreflex response to blood pressure increases, acting through the activation of 5-HT(1A) receptors. Background/Aims: To evaluate the effects of neonatal handling on hydroelectrolytic balance in adult rats. Methods: The litters were divided into two groups: nonhandled and handled. The procedure consisted of handling the pups for 1 min/day in the first 10 days postnatally. When adults, animals had their body weight verified and were housed in individual metabolic cages. After a 24-hour period, urine samples were collected and the urinary and water intake volumes measured. Blood samples to determine osmolality, aldosterone, corticosterone, angiotensin II, creatinine, urea, sodium and potassium levels were collected. The kidneys were removed for histological assessment. Urinary osmolality, sodium, urea and creatinine were also measured and the creatinine clearance (CC) calculated. Results: No difference between groups was found in the body weight. Handled animals showed a reduction in the total kidney wet weight, water intake, urinary volume, CC, plasma angiotensin II, corticosterone and aldosterone when compared to the nonhandled and an increase in the urinary osmolality and sodium excretion fraction. No differences in serum potassium and no evidence of structural changes were demonstrated by histological analysis. Conclusion: Neonatal handling induced long-lasting effects decreasing renal function without evidence of kidney structural changes. Copyright (c) 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel

MRI is an important tool for investigating breast cancer. Although recognized as the method of choice for screening highrisk patients, and for other indications the role of MRI for lesion characterization remains controversial. Recently some authors have advocated the use of morphologic and postcontrast features for this purpose. Quantitative breast MRI techniques have not been applied extensively in breast diseases. Magnetization transfer (MT) is a quantitative MR technique commonly used to investigate neurological diseases. In breast diseases the use of MT has been limited to improving visualization of areas of enhancement in postcontrast images. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and utility of MT in discriminating benign from malignant breast lesions. Fifty-two lesions, Bl-RADS 4 and 5, from 49 patients, were prospectively evaluated using the MT ratio (MTR). Patients were divided into two groups: benign and malignant lesions. The MTR of fat, pectoralis major muscle, fibroglandular tissue, and breast lesions were calculated. A statistically significant difference was found between MTR from benign and malignant lesions (P < 0.001). Preliminary results suggest that MT can be used to evaluate breast lesions. Further studies are necessary to better define the utility and applicability of this technique.

There is an increasing interest about the use of stable isotopes for body composition analysis in pediatrics. To ensure the success of total body water analysis by the deuterium dilution method, it is fundamental to determine the equilibrium tune (plateau) of deuterium in the body fluid studied. Objectives: We report here the equilibration time of deuterium oxide in the saliva of newborns after oral intake of the isotope. Methods: Twenty healthy term newborn infants, 10 males and 10 females, were analyzed. Saliva was collected from each newborn before the oral administration of a 100 mg/kg dose of deuterium oxide (baseline sample) and then at 1-hour intervals for 5 hours after administration. Deuterium enrichment of saliva was determined by isotope ratio mass spectrometry according to the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Results: The plateau time of deuterium in saliva occurred 3 hours after oral administration of the stable isotope. Conclusion: These data are essential for further studies on the body composition of newborn infants. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study regarding the equilibration time of deuterium in the saliva of term newborns. JPGN 48:471-474, 2009.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to verify the influence of test environment on the flexural strength of dental porcelains with distinct microstructures. Material and Methods: Disk-shaped specimens from three dental porcelains with distinct leucite content (VM: zero; CE: 12; NS: 22 vol%) were manufactured and tested for biaxial flexural strength in air and immersed in artificial saliva. The results were analyzed by means of two-way ANOVA and Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05). Results: The flexural strength (MPa) obtained for ambient air and artificial saliva environments, respectively, were: 110.0 +/- 16.0 and 81.5 +/- 10.8 for VM; 51.9 +/- 4.0 and 42.0 +/- 4.7 for CE; 72.0 +/- 11.5 and 63.6 +/- 5.8 for NS. A numerical decrease in the mean flexural strength was observed for all groups when specimens were tested under artificial saliva; however, the difference was only statistically significant for VM. Conclusions: The results indicate that the effect of water immersion on the flexural strength of dental porcelains varies according to their leucite content, as only the material without leucite in its microstructure (VM) showed significant strength degradation when tested under water.

Objectives: This study is intended to verify the correlation among clinical indices of the peri-implant soft tissues, the histological condition and the presence of 3 pathogens commonly associated with peri-implant diseases (Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythia). Materials: Four clinical indices, Gingival Index (GI), Sulcus Bleeding Index, GI modified by Mombelli, and Plaque Index modified by Mombelli (mPI) were evaluated around I dental implant of each subject (n = 10). Subgingival plaque was collected for bacterial analysis (polymerase chain reaction) and a biopsy of peri-implant soft tissues for histological analysis was harvested. The clinical indices and detected pathogens correlated with a developed histological index (HI). Results: There was no statistically significant relationship between the clinical indices (GI, Sulcus Bleeding Index, and GI modified by Mombelli) and the HI, except for the mPI on the central area of lingual aspects (r = 0.85, P = 0.0029). There was a tendency for a positive correlation between the mPI on the central area of buccal aspects and the HI (r = 0.63, P = 0.0544). The counting of lymphocytes and plasmocytes correlated positively with 111, thus suggesting the index reliability. The prevalence of A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, and T. forsythia did not present a significant relationship with the HI. Conclusion: Despite the small number of samples and the poor statistical significance, the mPI seems to be useful for evaluation of inflammatory severity on soft tissue around dental implants as demonstrated by its relationship with the HI. Background. Researchers have proposed the restoration of abfraction lesions, but limited information is available about the effects of occlusal loading on the margins of such restorations. Because abfraction is a well-recognized problem, the authors conducted a study to assess the effects of occlusal loading on the margins of cervical restorations. Methods. The authors prepared 40 wedge-shaped cavities in extracted premolars and restored them with a resin-based composite. They subjected specimens to occlusal loading (150 newtons, 101 cycles) on the buccal cusp, on the central fossa or on the lingual cusp, and they stored 1 the control group, specimens in deionized water. The authors used fluorescein to delimit marginal defects and evaluated the defects by using laser scanning confocal microscopy. Results. Results of chi(2) and Kruskal-Wallis tests (P < .05) showed that specimens subjected to occlusal loading had a higher percentage of marginal gaps (53.3 percent) than did the control specimens (10.0 percent). There were no differences between groups in marginal defect formation or in defect location, length or width. Conclusions. Occlusal loading led to a significant increase in gap formation at the margins of cervical resin-based composite restorations. Clinical Implications. The clinician cannot underestimate the effects of occlusal loading When restoring teeth with cervical wedge-shaped lesions. If occlusal loading is the main factor contributing to lesion formation, the clinician should identify and treat it before placing the restoration or otherwise run the risk that the restorative treatment will fail because of marginal gap formation.

O F??rum de clientes constitui-se de reuni??es de natureza consultiva, realizadas com clientes atuais e potenciais do Banco, nos nove estados do Nordeste e no norte de Minas. Entre os instrumentos criados dentro da vis??o "focar as a????es no cliente" foi implantado o Servi??o de Orienta????o ao Cliente - Cliente Consulta, um canal gratuito de comunica????o entre o Banco e a comunidade que tem car??ter consultivo sobre os ramos de neg??cio do Banco: cr??dito, capacita????o, capta????o e servi??os. No Servi??o de Orienta????o ao Cliente os clientes atuais e potenciais recebem atendimento remoto e personalizado por equipe qualificada que propicia orienta????o adequada, criando novas possibilidades de atua????o do Banco a partir das necessidades e expectativas dos clientes ou ajustando-se a essas. Ocorre pelo deslocamento de funcion??rios das Ag??ncias, por um dia, para um dos munic??pios sob sua jurisdi????o. As visitas obedecem a um sistema de rod??zio, sempre priorizando as comunidades com maiores demandas. A Ag??ncia Itinerante ?? realizada em forte parceria com a Prefeitura do munic??pio, que cede um ponto de apoio, onde fica afixada a marca do Banco e o telefone do Cliente Consulta, facilitando o contato entre o Banco e seus clientes-alvo: os agentes produtivos. This work consists in a study about the chemical activation of charred rice hulls using NaOH as the activation agent. The influence of the naturally-occurring silica was particularly evidenced. X-ray diffraction patterns showed the formation of sodium carbonate and silicates in the activated samples, whereas thermogravimetric curves revealed a strong reduction in the ash content of these samples after washing with water. Nitrogen adsorption data indicated a microporosity development only in the washed samples, with BET surface area values of 450 and 1380 m2/g achieved for the samples activated at 800 °C starting from the precursor with or without silica, respectively.
