We investigate the possibility of projecting low-dimensional chaos from spatiotemporal dynamics of a model for a kind of plastic instability observed under constant strain rate deformation conditions. We first discuss the relationship between the spatiotemporal patterns of the model reflected in the nature of dislocation bands and the nature of stress serrations. We show that at low applied strain rates, there is a one-to-one correspondence with the randomly nucleated isolated bursts of mobile dislocation density and the stress drops. We then show that the model equations are spatiotemporally chaotic by demonstrating the number of positive Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov dimension scale with the system size at low and high strain rates. Using a modified algorithm for calculating correlation dimension density, we show that the stress-strain signals at low applied strain rates corresponding to spatially uncorrelated dislocation bands exhibit features of low-dimensional chaos. This is made quantitative by demonstrating that the model equations can be approximately reduced to space-independent model equations for the average dislocation densities, which is known to be low-dimensionally chaotic. However, the scaling regime for the correlation dimension shrinks with increasing applied strain rate due to increasing propensity for propagation of the dislocation bands.

Recently it has been shown that the fidelity of the ground state of a quantum many-body system can be used todetect its quantum critical points (QCPs). If g denotes the parameter in the Hamiltonian with respect to which the fidelity is computed, we find that for one-dimensional models with large but finite size, the fidelity susceptibility chi(F) can detect a QCP provided that the correlation length exponent satisfies nu < 2. We then show that chi(F) can be used to locate a QCP even if nu >= 2 if we introduce boundary conditions labeled by a twist angle N theta, where N is the system size. If the QCP lies at g = 0, we find that if N is kept constant, chi(F) has a scaling form given by chi(F) similar to theta(-2/nu) f (g/theta(1/nu)) if theta << 2 pi/N. We illustrate this both in a tight-binding model of fermions with a spatially varying chemical potential with amplitude h and period 2q in which nu = q, and in a XY spin-1/2 chain in which nu = 2. Finally we show that when q is very large, the model has two additional QCPs at h = +/- 2 which cannot be detected by studying the energy spectrum but are clearly detected by chi(F). The peak value and width of chi(F) seem to scale as nontrivial powers of q at these QCPs. We argue that these QCPs mark a transition between extended and localized states at the Fermi energy. In this study tensile properties of consolidated magnesium chips obtained from solid state re-cycling (SSR) has been examined and correlated with the microstructure. Chips machined from as-cast billet of pure magnesium were consolidated through SSR technique, comprising of compaction at ambient conditions followed by hot extrusion at four different temperatures viz., 250, 300, 350 and 400 degrees C. The extruded rods were characterized for microstructure and their room temperature tensile properties. Both ultimate tensile strength and 0.2% proof stress of these consolidated materials are higher by 15-35% compared to reference material (as cast and extruded). Further these materials obey Hall-Petch relation with respect to strength dependence of grain size. Strain hardening behavior, measured in terms of hardening exponent, hardening capacity and hardening rate was found to be distinctly different in chip consolidated material compared to reference material. Strength asymmetry, measured as a ratio of compressive proof stress to tensile proof stress was higher in chip consolidated material. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, the influence of tool rotation speed and feed rate on the forming limit of friction stir welded Al 6061-T651 sheets has been investigated. The forming limit curve was evaluated by limit dome height test performed on all the friction stir welded sheets. The welding trials were conducted at a tool rotation speed of 1300 and 1400 r/min and feed rate of 90 and 100 mm/min. A third trial of welding was performed at a rotational speed of 1500 r/min and feed rate 120 mm/min. It is found that with increase in the tool rotation speed, from 1300 to 1400 r/min, for a constant feed rate, the forming limit of friction stir welded blank has improved and with increase in feed rate, from 90 to 100 mm/min, for a constant tool rotation speed, it has decreased. The forming limit of friction stir welded sheets is better than unwelded sheets. The thickness gradient after forming is severe in the cases of friction stir welded blanks made at higher feed rate and lower rotation speed. The strain hardening exponent of weld (n) increases with increase in tool rotation speed and it decreases with increase in feed rate. It has been demonstrated that the change in the forming limit of friction stir welded sheets with respect to welding parameters is due to the thickness distribution severity and strain hardening exponent of the weld region during forming. There is not much variation in the dome height among the friction stir welded sheets tested. When compared with unwelded sheets, dome height of friction stir welded sheets is higher in near-plane-strain condition, but it is lesser in stretching strain paths.

We develop a unified model to explain the dynamics of driven one dimensional ribbon for materials with strain and magnetic order parameters. We show that the model equations in their most general form explain several results on driven magnetostrictive metallic glass ribbons such as the period doubling route to chaos as a function of a dc magnetic field in the presence of a sinusoidal field, the quasiperiodic route to chaos as a function of the sinusoidal field for a fixed dc field, and induced and suppressed chaos in the presence of an additional low amplitude near resonant sinusoidal field. We also investigate the influence of a low amplitude near resonant field on the period doubling route. The model equations also exhibit symmetry restoring crisis with an exponent close to unity. The model can be adopted to explain certain results on magnetoelastic beam and martensitic ribbon under sinusoidal driving conditions. In the latter case, we find interesting dynamics of a periodic one orbit switching between two equivalent wells as a function of an ac magnetic field that eventually makes a direct transition to chaos under resonant driving condition. The model is also applicable to magnetomartensites and materials with two order parameters. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4790845]

This work is a continuation of our efforts to quantify the irregular scalar stress signals from the Ananthakrishna model for the Portevin-Le Chatelier instability observed under constant strain rate deformation conditions. Stress related to the spatial average of the dislocation activity is a dynamical variable that also determines the time evolution of dislocation densities. We carry out detailed investigations on the nature of spatiotemporal patterns of the model realized in the form of different types of dislocation bands seen in the entire instability domain and establish their connection to the nature of stress serrations. We then characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of the model equations by computing the Lyapunov dimension as a function of the drive parameter. The latter scales with the system size only for low strain rates, where isolated dislocation bands are seen, and at high strain rates, where fully propagating bands are seen. At intermediate applied strain rates corresponding to the partially propagating bands, the Lyapunov dimension exhibits two distinct slopes, one for small system sizes and another for large. This feature is rationalized by demonstrating that the spatiotemporal patterns for small system sizes are altered from the partially propagating band types to isolated burst type. This in turn allows us to reconfirm that low-dimensional chaos is projected from the stress signals as long as there is a one-to-one correspondence between the bursts of dislocation bands and the stress drops. We then show that the stress signals in the regime of partially to fully propagative bands have features of extensive chaos by calculating the correlation dimension density. We also show that the correlation dimension density also depends on the system size. A number of issues related to the system size dependence of the Lyapunov dimension density and the correlation dimension density are discussed.

This brief discusses the convergence analysis of proportional navigation (PN) guidance law in the presence of delayed line-of-sight (LOS) rate information. The delay in the LOS rate is introduced by the missile guidance system that uses a low cost sensor to obtain LOS rate information by image processing techniques. A Lyapunov-like function is used to analyze the convergence of the delay differential equation (DDE) governing the evolution of the LOS rate. The time-to-go until which decreasing behaviour of the Lyapunov-like function can be guaranteed is obtained. Conditions on the delay for finite time convergence of the LOS rate are presented for the linearized engagement equation. It is observed that in the presence of line-of-sight rate delay, increasing the effective navigation constant of the PN guidance law deteriorates its performance. Numerical simulations are presented to validate the results.

We demonstrate a rigidity percolation transition and the onset of yield stress in a dilute aqueous dispersion of graphene oxide platelets (aspect ratio similar to 5000) above a critical volume fraction of 3.75 x 10(-4) with a percolation exponent of 2.4 +/- 0.1. The viscoelastic moduli of the gel at rest measured as a function of time indicate the absence of structural evolution of the 3D percolated network of disks. However a shear-induced aging giving rise to a compact jammed state and shear rejuvenation indicating a homogenous flow is observed when a steady shear stress (sigma) is imposed in creep experiments. We construct a shear diagram (sigma vs. volume fraction phi) and the critical stress above which shear rejuvenation occurs is identified as the yield stress sigma(y) of the gel. The minimum steady state shear rate (gamma) over dot(m) obtained from creep experiments agrees well with the end of the plateau region in a controlled shear rate flow curve, indicating a shear localization below (gamma) over dot(m). A steady state shear banding in the plateau region of the flow curve observed in particle velocimetry measurements in a Couette geometry confirms that the dilute suspensions of GO platelets form a thixotropic yield stress fluid.

Ion conducting glasses in xLiCl-20Li(2)O-(80-x) 0.80P(2)O(5)-0.20MoO(3)] glass system have been prepared over a wide range of composition (X = 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mol%). The electrical conductivity and dielectric relaxation of these glasses were analyzed using impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range of 10 Hz-10 MHz and in the temperature range of 313-353 K. D.c. activation energies extracted from Arrhenius plots using regression analysis, decreases with increasing LiCl mol%. A.c. conductivity data has been fitted to both single and double power law equation with both fixed and variable parameters. The increased conductivity in the present glass system has been correlated with the volume increasing effect and the coordination changes that occur due to structural modification resulting in the creation of non-bridging oxygens (NBO's) of the type O-Mo-O- bonds in the glass network. Dielectric relaxation mechanism in these glasses is analyzed using Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) stretched exponential function and stretched exponent (beta) is found to be insensitive to temperature.

We review the spatio-temporal dynamical features of the Ananthakrishna model for the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, a kind of plastic instability observed under constant strain rate deformation conditions. We then establish a qualitative correspondence between the spatio-temporal structures that evolve continuously in the instability domain and the nature of the irregularity of the scalar stress signal. Rest of the study is on quantifying the dynamical information contained in the stress signals about the spatio-temporal dynamics of the model. Recession flows in a basin are controlled by the temporal evolution of its active drainage network (ADN). The geomorphological recession flow model (GRFM) assumes that both the rate of flow generation per unit ADN length (q) and the speed at which ADN heads move downstream (c) remain constant during a recession event. Thereby, it connects the power law exponent of -dQ/dt versus Q (discharge at the outlet at time t) curve, , with the structure of the drainage network, a fixed entity. In this study, we first reformulate the GRFM for Horton-Strahler networks and show that the geomorphic ((g)) is equal to D/(D-1), where D is the fractal dimension of the drainage network. We then propose a more general recession flow model by expressing both q and c as functions of Horton-Strahler stream order. We show that it is possible to have = (g) for a recession event even when q and c do not remain constant. The modified GRFM suggests that is controlled by the spatial distribution of subsurface storage within the basin. By analyzing streamflow data from 39 U.S. Geological Survey basins, we show that is having a power law relationship with recession curve peak, which indicates that the spatial distribution of subsurface storage varies across recession events. Key Points The GRFM is reformulated for Horton-Strahler networks. The GRFM is modified by allowing its parameters to vary along streams. Sub-surface storage distribution controls recession flow characteristics.

The main aim of the present work is to analyze the influence of shoulder diameter and plunge depth on the formability of friction stir welded sheets. The base material used for welding and forming was AA6061-T6. Formability evaluation was performed through limiting dome height tests. The forming limit curve, FLC (only in the stretching region), thickness distribution, and strain hardening exponent of the weld region were monitored during formability studies. It is found from the work that the forming limit of friction stir welded sheets is better than unwelded sheets. In general, with an increase in shoulder diameter and plunge depth, the forming limit is found to improve considerably. With a decrease in thickness gradient severity and an increase in strain hardening exponent (n) of the weld region, the forming limit is found to increase. The increase in n value of the weld region is believed to occur because of the reduction in dislocation density. The maximum thickness difference is higher in the retreating side, rather than in the advancing side, of the weld. This is due to the differential straining and hardness levels attained by both sides during friction stir welding.

Scaling of the streamwise velocity spectrum phi(11)(k(1)) in the so-called sink-flow turbulent boundary layer is investigated in this work. The present experiments show strong evidence for the k(1)(-1) scaling i.e. phi(11)(k(1)) = Lambda(1)U(tau)(2)k(1)(-1), where k(1)(-1) is the streamwise wavenumber and U-tau is the friction velocity. Interestingly, this k(1)(-1) scaling is observed much farther from the wall and at much lower flow Reynolds number (both differing by almost an order of magnitude) than what the expectations from experiments on a zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer flow would suggest. Furthermore, the coefficient A(1) in the present sink-flow data is seen to be non-universal, i.e. A(1) varies with height from the wall; the scaling exponent -1 remains universal. Logarithmic variation of the so-called longitudinal structure function, which is the physical-space counterpart of spectral k(1)(-1) scaling, is also seen to be non-universal, consistent with the non-universality of A(1). These observations are to be contrasted with the universal value of A(1) (along with the universal scaling exponent of 1) reported in the literature on zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers. Theoretical arguments based on dimensional analysis indicate that the presence of a streamwise pressure gradient in sink-flow turbulent boundary layers makes the coefficient A(1) non-universal while leaving the scaling exponent -1 unaffected. This effect of the pressure gradient on the streamwise spectra, as discussed in the present study (experiments as well as theory), is consistent with other recent studies in the literature that are focused on the structural aspects of turbulent boundary layer flows in pressure gradients (Harun etal., J. Flui(d) Mech., vol. 715, 2013, pp. 477-498); the present paper establishes the link between these two. The variability of A(1) accommodated in the present framework serves to clarify the ideas of universality of the k(1)(-1) scaling.

The effects of the initial height on the temporal persistence probability of steady-state height fluctuations in up-down symmetric linear models of surface growth are investigated. We study the (1 + 1)-dimensional Family model and the (1 + 1)-and (2 + 1)-dimensional larger curvature (LC) model. Both the Family and LC models have up-down symmetry, so the positive and negative persistence probabilities in the steady state, averaged over all values of the initial height h(0), are equal to each other. However, these two probabilities are not equal if one considers a fixed nonzero value of h(0). Plots of the positive persistence probability for negative initial height versus time exhibit power-law behavior if the magnitude of the initial height is larger than the interface width at saturation. By symmetry, the negative persistence probability for positive initial height also exhibits the same behavior. The persistence exponent that describes this power-law decay decreases as the magnitude of the initial height is increased. The dependence of the persistence probability on the initial height, the system size, and the discrete sampling time is found to exhibit scaling behavior.

Electric field activated nonlinear transport is investigated in polypyrrole thin film in both in-plane and out-of-plane geometries down to 5 K and strong anisotropy is observed. A morphological model is suggested to explain the anisotropy through inter-chain and intra-chain transport. The deviation from the variable range hopping at low temperature is accounted by fluctuation assisted transport. From Zabrodaskii plots, it is found that electric field can tune the transport from insulating to metallic regime. Glazman-Matveev model is used to describe the nonlinear conduction. Field scaling analysis shows that conductance data at different temperature falls on to a single curve. Nonlinearity exponent, m(T) and characteristic length, L-E are estimated to characterize the transport in both the geometries. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
