Os Transformadores de potência são máquinas de elevada importância ao nível dos Sistemas Elétricos de Energia (SEE) uma vez que são estas máquinas que possibilitam a interligação dos diferentes níveis de tensão da rede e a transmissão de energia elétrica em Corrente Alternada (CA). Geralmente, estas máquinas são de grandes dimensões e de elevado nível de complexidade construtiva. Caracterizam-se por possuírem períodos de vida útil bastante elevados (vinte a trinta anos) e preços elevados, o que conduz a um nível de exigência de fiabilidade muito elevada, uma vez que não e viável a existência de muitos equipamentos de reserva nos SEE. Com o objetivo de tentar maximizar o período de vida útil dos transformadores de potência e a sua fiabilidade, tenta-se, cada vez mais, implementar conceitos de manutenção preventiva a este tipo de máquinas. No entanto, a gestão da sua vida útil e extremamente complexa na medida em que, estas máquinas têm vários componentes cruciais e suscetiveis de originar falhas e, quase todos eles, encontram-se no interior de uma cuba. Desta forma, não e possível obter uma imagem do seu estado, em tempo real, sem colocar o transformador fora de serviço, algo que acarreta custos elevados. Por este motivo, desenvolveu-se uma técnica que permite obter uma indicação do estado do transformador, em tempo real, sem o retirar de serviço, colhendo amostras do óleo isolante e procedendo a sua análise físico-química e Analise Gases Dissolvidos (DGA). As análises aos óleos isolantes tem vindo a adquirir uma preponderância muito elevada no diagnóstico de falhas e na analise do estado de conservação destes equipamentos tendo-se desenvolvido regras para interpretação dos parâmetros dos óleos com carácter normativo. Considerando o conhecimento relativo a interpretação dos ensaios físico-químicos e DGA ao oleol, e possível desenvolver ferramentas capazes de otimizar essas mesmas interpretações e aplicar esse conhecimento no sentido de prever a sua evolução, assim como o surgimento de possíveis falhas em transformadores, para assim otimizar os processos de manutenção. As aplicações móveis de serviços baseados na localização, denominados LBS (Location-based services), disponibilizam serviços ao utilizador baseadas na sua localização geográfica. Este tipo de serviços começou a surgir ainda na década de 90 e, à medida que o número de dispositivos móveis cresceu de forma exponencial, a sua oferta disparou consideravelmente. Existem várias áreas com aplicabilidade prática, mas o foco desta tese é a pesquisa e localização de pontos de interesse (POI’s). Através dos sensores que os dispositivos móveis atualmente disponibilizam, torna-se possível localizar a posição do utilizador e apresentar-lhe os pontos de interesse que estão situados em seu redor. No entanto essa informação isolada revela-se por vezes insuficiente, uma vez que esses pontos de interesse são à partida desconhecidos para o utilizador. Através do serviço coolplaces, um projeto que pretende dedicar-se à pesquisa e partilha de POI’s, podemos criar a nossa rede de amigos e de locais, beneficiando assim da respetiva informação de contexto de um determinado POI. As inovações tecnológicas permitiram também o aparecimento de aplicações de Realidade Aumentada nos dispositivos móveis, isto é, aplicações capazes de sobrepor imagens virtuais a visualizações do mundo real. Considerando a visualização de POI’s num dado ambiente, se encararmos a Realidade Aumentada como um potenciador da interação do utilizador com o mundo real, rapidamente identificamos as potencialidades da junção destes conceitos numa só aplicação. Sendo assim, o trabalho desenvolvido nesta tese pretende constituir um estudo sobre a implementação e desenvolvimento de um módulo de Realidade Aumentada para a aplicação móvel do serviço coolplaces, fazendo uso da tecnologia disponível no mercado de forma a proporcionar uma experiência inovadora e acrescentar valor à referida aplicação.

Multi-standard mobile devices are allowing users to enjoy higher data rates with ubiquitous connectivity. However, the benefits gained from multiple interfaces come at an expense—that being higher energy consumption in an era where mobile devices need to be energy compliant. One promising solution is the usage of short-range cooperative communication as an overlay for infrastructure-based networks taking advantage of its context information. However, the node discovery mechanism, which is pivotal to the bearer establishment process, still represents a major burden in terms of the total energy budget. In this paper, we propose a technology agnostic approach towards enhancing the MAC energy ratings by presenting a context-aware node discovery (CANDi) algorithm, which provides a priori knowledge towards the node discovery mechanism by allowing it to search nodes in the near vicinity at the ‘right time and at the right place’. We describe the different beacons required for establishing the cooperation, as well as the context information required, including battery level, modes, location and so on. CANDi uses the long-range network (WiMAX and WiFi) to distribute the context information about cooperative clusters (Ultra-wideband-based) in the vicinity. The searching nodes can use this context in locating the cooperative clusters/nodes, which facilitates the establishing of short-range connections. Analytical and simulation results are obtained, and the energy saving gains are further demonstrated in the laboratory using a customised testbed. CANDi saves up to 50% energy during the node discovery process, while the demonstrative testbed shows up to 75% savings in the total energy budget, thus validating the algorithm, as well as providing viable evidence to support the usage of short-range cooperative communications for energy savings.

Distributed real-time systems such as automotive applications are becoming larger and more complex, thus, requiring the use of more powerful hardware and software architectures. Furthermore, those distributed applications commonly have stringent real-time constraints. This implies that such applications would gain in flexibility if they were parallelized and distributed over the system. In this paper, we consider the problem of allocating fixed-priority fork-join Parallel/Distributed real-time tasks onto distributed multi-core nodes connected through a Flexible Time Triggered Switched Ethernet network. We analyze the system requirements and present a set of formulations based on a constraint programming approach. Constraint programming allows us to express the relations between variables in the form of constraints. Our approach is guaranteed to find a feasible solution, if one exists, in contrast to other approaches based on heuristics. Furthermore, approaches based on constraint programming have shown to obtain solutions for these type of formulations in reasonable time.

The design and development of the swordfish autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) system is discussed. Swordfish is an ocean capable 4.5 m long catamaran designed for network centric operations (with ocean and air going vehicles and human operators). In the basic configuration, Swordfish is both a survey vehicle and a communications node with gateways for broadband, Wi-Fi and GSM transports and underwater acoustic modems. In another configuration, Swordfish mounts a docking station for the autonomous underwater vehicle Isurus from Porto University. Swordfish has an advanced control architecture for multi-vehicle operations with mixed initiative interactions (human operators are allowed to interact with the control loops).

Smart Cities are designed to be living systems and turn urban dwellers life more comfortable and interactive by keeping them aware of what surrounds them, while leaving a greener footprint. The Future Cities Project [1] aims to create infrastructures for research in smart cities including a vehicular network, the BusNet, and an environmental sensor platform, the Urban Sense. Vehicles within the BusNet are equipped with On Board Units (OBUs) that offer free Wi-Fi to passengers and devices near the street. The Urban Sense platform is composed by a set of Data Collection Units (DCUs) that include a set of sensors measuring environmental parameters such as air pollution, meteorology and noise. The Urban Sense platform is expanding and receptive to add new sensors to the platform. The parnership with companies like TNL were made and the need to monitor garbage street containers emerged as air pollution prevention. If refuse collection companies know prior to the refuse collection which route is the best to collect the maximum amount of garbage with the shortest path, they can reduce costs and pollution levels are lower, leaving behind a greener footprint. This dissertation work arises in the need to monitor the garbage street containers and integrate these sensors into an Urban Sense DCU. Due to the remote locations of the garbage street containers, a network extension to the vehicular network had to be created. This dissertation work also focus on the Multi-hop network designed to extend the vehicular network coverage area to the remote garbage street containers. In locations where garbage street containers have access to the vehicular network, Roadside Units (RSUs) or Access Points (APs), the Multi-hop network serves has a redundant path to send the data collected from DCUs to the Urban Sense cloud database. To plan this highly dynamic network, the Wi-Fi Planner Tool was developed. This tool allowed taking measurements on the field that led to an optimized location of the Multi-hop network nodes with the use of radio propagation models. This tool also allowed rendering a temperature-map style overlay for Google Earth [2] application. For the DCU for garbage street containers the parner company provided the access to a HUB (device that communicates with the sensor inside the garbage containers). The Future Cities use the Raspberry pi as a platform for the DCUs. To collect the data from the HUB a RS485 to RS232 converter was used at the physical level and the Modbus protocol at the application level. To determine the location and status of the vehicles whinin the vehicular network a TCP Server was developed. This application was developed for the OBUs providing the vehicle Global Positioning System (GPS) location as well as information of when the vehicle is stopped, moving, on idle or even its slope. To implement the Multi-hop network on the field some scripts were developed such as pingLED and “shark”. These scripts helped upon node deployment on the field as well as to perform all the tests on the network. Two setups were implemented on the field, an urban setup was implemented for a Multi-hop network coverage survey and a sub-urban setup was implemented to test the Multi-hop network routing protocols, Optimized Link State Routing Protocol (OLSR) and Babel.

We study the peculiar dynamical features of a fractional derivative of complex-order network. The network is composed of two unidirectional rings of cells, coupled through a "buffer" cell. The network has a Z3 × Z5 cyclic symmetry group. The complex derivative Dα±jβ, with α, β ∈ R+ is a generalization of the concept of integer order derivative, where α = 1, β = 0. Each cell is modeled by the Chen oscillator. Numerical simulations of the coupled cell system associated with the network expose patterns such as equilibria, periodic orbits, relaxation oscillations, quasiperiodic motion, and chaos, in one or in two rings of cells. In addition, fixing β = 0.8, we perceive differences in the qualitative behavior of the system, as the parameter c ∈ [13, 24] of the Chen oscillator and/or the real part of the fractional derivative, α ∈ {0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0}, are varied. Some patterns produced by the coupled system are constrained by the network architecture, but other features are only understood in the light of the internal dynamics of each cell, in this case, the Chen oscillator. What is more important, architecture and/or internal dynamics?
