An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance was employed to monitor directly the growth of vanadium hexacyanoferrate (VHF) films on platinum substrates during electrodeposition and interfacial coagulation in the solution containing sulfuric acid electrolyte, vanadium(IV) and hexacyanoferrate(III). Mass changes of the gold/crystal working electrode were correlated with cyclic voltammetry data. Effects of cations (NH4+, Li+, Na+ and K+), anions (SO42- and NO3-) and solvent during redox reactions of the films were studied. The results show that cations were incorporated into the film during reduction and expelled from the film during oxidation. Solvent also participates in VHF electrochemistry, and its role cannot be neglected. Anions play no role in VHF electrochemistry. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

The fragmentations of three bifunctional phenylether compounds including 2-(2, 6-dichloro)phenoxyl propionitrile, N-hydroxyl-4-butoxyl phenylacetyl amine(bufexamc) and 2-(1-methylethoxyl) phenol methylcarbamate (Propoxur) under electron impact ionization were reported, Metastable ion(MI) and collision-induced dissociation(CID) at a low energy have been used to study the fragmentation pathways from molecular ions. Apart from the simple bond cleavages, and the unimolecular dissociations via ion/neutral complex intermediate as a competitive mechanism were demonstrated, Moreover, the intramolecular hydrogen transfer and double hydrogen transfers in the fragmentations of these compounds were discussed in detail.

Steady-state voltammograms at a microdisk electrode are used to measure the diffusion coefficient (D) and standard heterogeneous rate constant (k(s)) of ferrocene in polyelectrolyte PEG.MClO(4). The diffusion coefficient and standard heterogeneous rate constant of ferrocene are both smaller in polymer solvents than in monomeric solvents. The D and k(s) of ferrocene have been estimated in PEG containing different concentrations and cations of supporting electrolytes, and the dependencies of D and k(s) on temperature have been observed. These results show that the D and k(s) of ferrocene increase with increasing temperature in polyelectrolyte, and with increasing cation radius of supporting electrolyte, eg D and k(s) increase in the order Bu(4)NClO(4) > NaClO4 > LiClO4. On the other hand, D and k(s) increase with decreasing concentration of supporting electrolyte. The dependence of the half-wave potential (E(1/2)) on the concentration of the supporting electrolyte is also observed. E(1/2) shifts in the negative direction as the concentration of supporting electrolyte increases. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Emission of europium(II) and europium(III) have been observed in SrMgF4 : xEu, yTb phosphors which are synthesized in Ar or Ar/H-2 flow. The valence state of Eu is influenced by terbium. It is notable that the intensities of the ESR peaks corresponding to EU(2+) are regularly changed when terbium ion is incorporated. The typical Tb3d XPS spectrum belonging to Tb4+ is also found when Eu is codoped. This phenomena can be explained by electron transfer mechanism Eu3+ + Tb3+-->EU(2+) + Tb4+. And its equilibrium constant is studied by ESR technique.

Probe beam deflection(PBD) technique together with electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry was used to study the ion exchange in prussian blue(PB) film and its analogue indium hexacyanoferrate (InHCF) chemically modified electrodes, The ion exchange mechanism of PB was verified as following: K2Fe2+FeI(CN)(6)(-e--K+)reversible arrow(+e-+K+)KFe(3+)Fe(I)(CN)(6)(-xe--xK+)reversible arrow(+xe-+xK+) [Fe3+FeI(CN)(6)](x)[KFe3+FeI(CN)(6)](1-x) where on reduction in contact with an acidic KCl electrolyte, H+ enter PB film before K+. Both the cations and anions participate concurrently in the redox process of InHCF, meanwhile K+ ion plays a major role in the whole charge transfer process of this film with increasing radii of anions.

The photoluminescence of Ce3+, Tb3+ and Sm3+, and energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+, Dy3+ and Sm3+ in Mg2Y8(SiOd(4))(6)O-2 are reported and discussed. The Ce3+ ion shows blue luminescence under UV excitation, and occupies simultaneously the 4f site and 6h site in the host lattice. The optimum concentrations for the D-5(3) and D-5(4) emissions of Tb3+ and the (4)G(5/2) emission of Sm3+ are determined to be 0.04, 0.20 and 0.10 mol in every mol of Mg2Y8(SiO4)(6)O-2, respectively. The critical distances responsible for the cross-relaxation between the D-5(3)-D-5(4) and F-7(6)-F-7(0) transitions of Tb3+ and between the (4)G(5/2)-F-4(9/2) and H-6(5/2)-F-4(9/2) transitions of Sm3+ are estimated to be 1.43 and 1.06 nm, respectively. Both Tb3+ and Dy3+ can be sensitized by Ce3+, but Ce3+ and Sm3+ quench each other.

At room temperature, the Bi3+ ion shows broad band characters of its luminescence in Ca2B2O5, M3B2O6 ( M=Ca,Sr ) and SrB4O7. The maxima of the Bi3+ S-1(0)-->P-3(1) absorption bands are located in the range of 240-300nm, but the energy variation of the corresponding P-3(1)-->S-1(0) emissions is very large. The maxima of these emission bands change from 350nm in Ca3B2O6;Bi3+ to 586nm in SrB4O7:Bi3+. The Stokes shift of the Bi3+ luminescence increases from 6118 cm-1, in Ca2B2O5:Bi3+, to 24439 cm-1, in SrB4O7:Bi3+. The emission intensity of the Bi3+ luminescence increases with the decreasing Stokes shift. It has been found that in Ca2B2O5, the Bi3+ ion could transfer its excitation energy to the R3+ ions ( R=Eu, Dy, Sm, Tb ) , but in, Ca3B2O6 and Sr3B2O6, only Bi3+-->Eu3+ was observed. No energy transfer from Bi3+ to R3+ was detected in SrB4O7.

The hydrolysis kinetics of atropine sulphate has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry at the water/nitrobenzene interface. The transfer process is diffusion controlled and the transfer species is a 1:1 proton-atropine complex. Two main factors, pH and temperature, which have notable effects on the hydrolysis rate, are illustrated. The most suitable pH for atropine to be preserved in aqueous solution and related parameters were estimated.

The binary cluster (CH3OH)(n)(NH3)(m) was studied by using a multiphoton ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MPI-TOFMS). The measured two series of protonated cluster ions: (CH3OH)(n)H+ and (CH3OH)(n)NH4+ (1 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 14) were attributed to the ion-molecule reaction in the binary cluster ions. The mixed cluster of CH3OD with ammonia was also studied. The results implied that the proton transfer probability from the OD group was larger than that from CH3 group. The ab initio calculation of the binary cluster was carried out at the HF/STO-3G and MP2/6-31G** levels of theory, and indicated that the latter process of the proton transfer must overcome a barrier of similar to 29 kcal/mol. Ultrafast UV-vibrational spectroscopy was used to investigate how vibrational excitation of the bridge changes photoinduced electron transfer between donor (dimethylaniline) and acceptor (anthracene) moieties bridged by a guanosine-cytidine base pair (GC). The charge-separated (CS) state yield is found to be lowered by high-frequency bridge mode excitation. The effect is linked to a dynamic modulation of the donor-acceptor coupling interaction by weakening of H-bonding and/or by disruption of the bridging base-pair planarity.

Ag+- and Zn2+-exchanged zeolites zeolites and clays have been used as coatings and in composites to confer broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties on a range of technical and biomedical materials. 11 angstrom tobermorite is a bioactive layer lattice ion exchanger whose potential as a carrier for Ag+ and Zn2+ ions in antimicrobial formulations has not yet been explored. In view of this, batch Ag+- and Zn2+-exchange kinetics of two structurally distinct synthetic 11 angstrom tobermorites and their subsequent bactericidal action against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are reported. During the exchange reactions, Ag+ ions were found to replace labile interlayer cations; whereas, Zn2+ ions also displaced structural Ca2+ ions from the tobermorite lattice. In spite of these different mechanisms, a simple pseudo-second-order model provided a suitable description of both exchange processes (R-2 >= 0.996). The Ag+- and Zn2+-exchanged tobermorite phases exhibited marked bacteriostatic effects against both bacteria, and accordingly, their potential for use as antimicrobial materials for in situ bone tissue regeneration is discussed. An analysis of radiative transfer effects present in the Fe XV ion stage of solar and stellar coronal plasmas provides a general explanation of line radiation intensity enhancement above the optically thin limit. Full linearization radiation transfer is compared with the escape factor method and found to be in good agreement at the lower column densities. An angular study of the enhancement shows that symmetry factors are of great importance. This gives a possible reason for the indeterminate status of opacity in relation to coronal lines of distant stellar sources, where only emission integrated across the whole surface is detected.

In 'Charge transfer from the negative-energy continuum: alternative mechanism for pair production in relativistic atomic collisions', Eichler (1995 Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 3653) proposes an alternative mechanism for capture by pair production, and from it derives an analytic expression for the total cross section with a surprisingly strong energy dependence. We show that, in fact, there is no alternative mechanism; rather the above mechanism may be more transparently viewed as an ionization-like transition in one centre with inclusion of continuum distortion by the second centre. We further show that to Centre the initial and final states on the target and projectile leads to confusion in the momentum transfer vectors, and hence, respectively that the alleged high-energy behaviour is erroneous.
