A measurement of the exclusive two-photon production of muon pairs in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV, pp -> p mu(+)mu(-) p, is reported using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 40 pb-1. For muon pairs with invariant mass greater than 11.5 GeV, transverse momentum p(T)(mu) > 4 GeV and pseudorapidity 1770.1) < 2.1, a fit to the dimuon p(T)(mu(+)mu(-)) distribution results in a measured cross section of sigma(p -> p mu(+)mu(-) p) - 3.38(-0.55)(+0.58) (stat.)+/- 0.16 (syst.) +/- 0.14 (lumi.) pb, consistent with the theoretical prediction evaluated with the event generator LPAIR. The ratio to the predicted cross section is 0.83+(0.14)(-0.13) (stat.) +/- 0.04 (syst.) +/- 0.03 (lumi.). The characteristic distributions of the muon pairs produced via Ty fusion, such as the muon acoplanarity, the muon pair invariant mass and transverse momentum agree with those from the theory.

The citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, is one of the main citrus diseases and has threatened the world's citriculture. In this study, the damage caused by citrus canker was quantified in a sweet orange culture, cv. Valencia [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.], grafted over 15 year-old Rangpur lime (C. limonia Osb.), in the municipality of Guatambu, SC, Brazil, in the crop of 2004/05. Evaluations of the number of fruits per plant (NF), fruit yield per plant (P), citrus canker incidence on the fruit (IFR), and incidence (IL) and severity (SV) of citrus canker on 80 leaves per orange tree were performed in the harvest period, applying diagrammatical scales. Plants had large variation in SV (0.16%-1.09%), IL (12.50%-56.25%) and IFR (12.30%-56.09%). Linear regressions were significant between IL x SV, NF x SV, P x IFR, and NF x IFR. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) between the mean estimated values of IL in different quadrants of the crowns of the orange trees (N, S, L and O). Each 1% increase in IFR reduced 2.16 kg and 21.3 fruits per tree.

Two high doses of ivermectin (630 mu g/kg and 700 mu g/kg) that are sold commercially in Brazil were evaluated in dose-and-slaughter trials with 144 naturally nematode-infected cattle from eight regions within the states of Minas Gerias, Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Treatment groups were based on fecal egg counts 1, 2, and 3 days before treatment; all animals studied had a minimum egg count of at least 500 eggs per gram of feces (EPG). Post-mortem analyses were conducted on day 14. The highest levels of resistance to ivermectin were found for Haemonchus placei, Cooperia punctata and Oesophagostomum radiatum; all populations of H. placei were resistant to the 630 mu g/kg dose, and 67% were resistant to 700 mu g/kg; 86% of C. punctata were resistant to the 630 mu g/kg dose, and 33% were resistant to 700 mu g/kg. A combined analysis revealed that 57% of O. radiatum were resistant to the lower dose of ivermectin. H. placei, C. punctata and O. radiatum, in order, were the nematode populations with the highest indices of resistance, whereas Trichostrongylus axei was the most susceptible to 630 and 700 mu g/kg dosages of ivermectin. The results of helminthic resistance to ivermectin for different populations of H. placei and C. punctata described in the present study support previous literature data, in which a small decrease in the average parasitic burden of C. punctata and a consequent increase of H. placei were observed in cattle from the Southeast, South and Center-West regions of Brazil. The present study aimed to determine the susceptibility of 17 Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus populations, originating in the Southeast and Southern regions of Brazil, to different ivermectin concentrations (200, 500 and 630 mu g/kg), administered through subcutaneous or topical (pour-on) routes. R. (B.) microplus populations from the states of Minas Gerais (seven populations), Sao Paulo (seven populations) and Parana (three populations) were chosen for the tests. The selected cattle were allocated to treatment groups on day 0, and block formation was based on the arithmetic mean of female ticks (4.5-8.0 mm long) counted on three consecutive days (-3, -2 and -1). To evaluate the therapeutic and residual efficacies of these formulations, tick counts (females ranging from 4.5 to 8.0 mm long) were performed on days 3,7 and 14 post-treatment, and continued on a weekly basis thereafter until the end of each experiment. The results obtained throughout this study, utilizing field efficacy studies, allowed us to conclude that the resistance of R. (B.) microplus against 200 and 500 mu g/kg ivermectin is widely disseminated because all tick populations that had contact with these specific concentrations were diagnosed as resistant. However, it is possible to infer that R. (B.) microplus resistance against 630 mu g/kg ivermectin was also widespread, diagnosed at six of ten analyzed properties. Resistance of these ectoparasites to 630 mu g/kg ivermectin is most likely emerging in three other populations of R. (B.) microplus. Strategies of resistance management need to be quickly determined to keep the selection pressure at a minimum level in Brazil. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The present study aimed to evaluate ivermectin and abamectin, both administered orally in naturally infected domestic swine, as well as analysing if the EPG (eggs per gram of faeces) values were equivalent with the ivermectin and abamectin efficacy obtained by 'parasitological necropsies. The animals were randomly selected based on the average of three consecutive EPG counts of Strongylida, Ascaris suum and Trichuris for experiment I, and of Strongylida and Trichuris for experiment II. After the random draw, eight animals were treated, orally, during seven consecutive days with 100 mu g/kg/day ivermectin (Ivermectina (R) premix, Ouro Fino Agronegocios), eight other animals were treated, orally, during seven consecutive days with 100 mu g/kg/clay abamectin (Virbamax (R) premix - Virbac do Brasil Industria e Comercio Ltda.), and eight pigs were kept as controls. EPG counts were performed for each individual animal at 14th day post-treatment (DPT). All animals (control and treatment) were necropsied at the 14th DPT. The results from both experiments demonstrate that both ivermectin and abamectin, administered orally for a continuous period of seven days, at a daily dosage of 100 mu g/kg, were highly effective (>95%) against Hyostrongylus rubidus, Strongyloides ransomi, Ascaris suum and Metastrongylus salmi. Against Oesophagostomum dentatum, abamectin presented over 95% efficacy against both evaluated strains, while ivermectin reached other strain as resistant. Regarding T. suis, both ivermectin and abamectin were effective (efficacies >90%) against one of the tested strains, while the other one was classified as resistant. Furthermore, the EPG values were equivalent with the ivermectin and abamectin efficacy obtained by parasitological necropsies. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The ALICE experiment at the LHC has studied J/psi production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV through its electron pair decay on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L-int = 5.6 nb(-1). The fraction of J/psi from the decay of long-lived beauty hadrons was determined for J/psi candidates with transverse momentum p(t) > 1,3 GeV/c and rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9. The cross section for prompt J/psi mesons, i.e. directly produced J/psi and prompt decays of heavier charmonium states such as the psi(2S) and chi(c) resonances, is sigma(prompt J/psi) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 8.3 +/- 0.8(stat.) +/- 1.1 (syst.)(-1.4)(+1.5) (syst. pol.) mu b. The cross section for the production of b-hadrons decaying to J/psi with p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c and vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9 is a sigma(J/psi <- hB) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 1.46 +/- 0.38 (stat.)(-0.32)(+0.26) (syst.) mu b. The results are compared to QCD model predictions. The shape of the p(t) and y distributions of b-quarks predicted by perturbative QCD model calculations are used to extrapolate the measured cross section to derive the b (b) over bar pair total cross section and d sigma/dy at mid-rapidity.

En la tesis que se presenta, es el estudio de la figura del arquitecto Gustavo Fernández Balbuena se parte de un supuesto doble: De una parte, la importancia de su obra y de otro el desconocimiento general de la misma aunque en sus 18 años de profesión sea tan amplia y diversa que provoque el respeto y la admiración de la mayoría de los arquitectos y profesionales de la construcción con los que se relaciona. La evolución profesional de Fernández Balbuena tiene al menos cuatro facetas que despiertan el interés por su figura. En primer lugar debe resaltarse su facilidad para escribir. En el examen del contexto de la época su facilidad expositiva es ciertamente reseñable. Una segunda faceta importante es su lucha por el reconocimiento de su profesión de arquitecto y la dignidad del trabajo que realizan. Por la actividad arquitectónica por sus compañeros y por el reconocimiento de la profesión dedica de forma altruista gran parte de su vida activa trabajando para la Sociedad Central de Arquitectos. En tercer lugar Fernández Balbuena tiene en función a su tiempo de vida profesional una variada obra arquitectónica dentro y fuera de Madrid que no ha sido suficientemente analizada hasta el momento. Su cuarta faceta es la de urbanista. Desde 1.919 en que entra a formar parte del proceso urbanístico de Madrid al ser nombrado Arquitecto Segundo de la Sección de Edificaciones del Ensanche hasta el año 1.928 en el que se retira de su puesto para regresar en 1.930 como Jefe de la Sección de Urbanización del Ayuntamiento, Fernández Balbuena interviene directamente en prácticamente todos los planes que se elaboran durante ese tiempo y de forma especial en la "Urbanización del Manzanares". El presente trabajo se ha orientado como el estudio de una persona Gustavo Fernández Balbuena y su importancia en el urbanismo de comienzos de Siglo en Madrid para lo cual trataremos de conocer primero al hombre como punto de referencia de cualquiera de su actividad. El análisis se inicia razonando el porqué del tema elegido para continuar con un capítulo el primero que trata de hacer una referencia histórica de la época en la que vivió el arquitecto sin intención interpretativa alguna y sólo con el fin de enmarcar a Fernández Balbuena en su sitio real. El capítulo segundo trata de la vida y obra en general de Balbuena. De la primera se investiga su trayectoria vital, desde su nacimiento en Madrid en 1888, hasta su muerte en 1931, a fin de concretar hasta que punto su evolución personal condicionó el desarrollo de su actividad. En cuanto a su obra, lo que se hace en este capítulo, es referenciar sus publicaciones, su actividad como arquitecto y su vinculación a la Sociedad Central de Arquitectos, temas que se desarrollarán de forma pormenorizada en los capítulos siguientes. En el capítulo tercero se analiza monográficamente la relación que mantuvo Balbuena con la Sociedad Central de Arquitectos, tanto participando en los órganos de dirección como colaborando en la revista "Arquitectura de la que fue primer director. En el capítulo cuarto se estudia su obra arquitectónica, haciendo especial referencia a los edificios de viviendas, tanto colectivas como unifamiliares, levantadas en Madrid. El capítulo quinto, se dedica a sus publicaciones, libros y artículos, conferencias, ponencias, asistencias a congresos y su actividad como jurado de concursos y en concreto en el Concurso de Proyectos para el Ateneo Mercantil de Valencia, en donde la explicación de su voto es una lección magistral de como ha de hacerse un proyecto. Por último se llega al capítulo sexto. En él se trata de descubrir la importancia que tuvo el autor en la cultura urbanística madrileña, como punto último de la investigación, que se divide en dos apartados: La evolución del planeamiento urbanístico en Madrid durante el primer tercio de Siglo, y la intervención en el mismo de Gustavo Fernández Balbuena
