Electron effect of p-substituent on iron(II) and cobalt(II) pyridinebisimine catalyst for ethylene polymerization

A series of 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl iron and cobalt complexes bearing p-substituent [2,6-(ArN=CMe)(2)C5H3N]-MCl2 (Ar=2,6-Me2C6H3, 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, 2,6-Me-2-4-BrC6H2, 2,6-Me-2-4-ClC6H2, 2,4-Me-2-6-BrC6H2, 2,4-Me-(2)-6-ClC6H2, while M=Fe, Co) have been synthesized and investigated as catalysts for ethylene polymerization in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst. The electron effect and positions of the substitueni of pyridinebisimine ligands were observed to affect considerably catalyst activity and polymer property.

Synthesis, characterization and crystal structures of dibenzo-18-crown-6 sodium isopolytungstates

Two novel dibenzo-18-crown-6 sodium isopolytungstates, [(DB18C6)(CH3OH)Na](2)W(6)O(19)(.)DB18C6(.)H(2)O 1 and [(DB18C6)(DMF)(2)Na](4)W(10)O(32)(.)2DMF(.)2H(2)O 2, have been synthesized in mixed methanol and acetonitrile solvents and characterized by elemental analysis, TGA, IR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 23.182(8), b = 19.527(2), c = 18.737(3) Angstrom, beta = 115.15(2)degrees, V = 7678(3) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, and R1(wR2) = 0.0611(0.1504). The compound 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with a = 16.516(2), b = 22.325(6), c = 20.425(7) Angstrom, beta = 91.78(2)degrees, V = 7528(3) Angstrom(3), Z = 2, and R1(wR2) = 0.0397(0.0773). The compound 1 exhibits a novel organic-inorganic sandwich-type structure, in which the crown ether-sodium complexes are coordinated to the terminal oxygen atoms of W6O192-. In compound 2, all Na+ ions are thoroughly enveloped into the organic moieties of crown ether and DMF molecules and are connected with the 'naked' polyanions W10O324- via the electrostatic attraction.

Crystallization behavior of a novel poly(aryl ether ketone): PEDEKmK

Isothermal melt and cold crystallization kinetics of PEDEKmK linked by meta-phenyl and biphenyl were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry in two temperature regions. Avrami analysis is used to describe the primary stages of the melt and cold crystallization, with exponent n = 2 and n = 4, respectively. The activation energies are -118 kJ/mol and 510 kJ/mol for crystallization from the melt and the glassy states, respectively. The equilibrium melting point T-m(0) is estimated to be 309 degrees C by using the Hoffman-Weeks approach, which compares favorably with determination from the Thomson-Gibbs method. The lateral and end surface free energies derived from the Lauritzen-Hoffman spherulitic growth rate equation are sigma = 8.45 erg/cm(2) and sigma(e) = 45.17 erg/cm(2), respectively. The work of chain folding q is determined as 3.06 kcal/mol. These observed crystallization characteristics of PEDEKmK are compared with those of the other members of poly(aryl ether ketone) family. RAPID-DETERMINATION OF KINETIC-PARAMETERS FOR THE ELECTROCATALYTIC REDUCTION OF DIOXYGEN BY VITAMIN-B12 ADSORBED ON GLASSY-CARBON ELECTRODE

In this paper, the electrochemical behavior of vitamin B-12, ie cyanocobalamin (abbr. VB12) in a weak acidic aqueous solution and adsorbed on glassy carbon (GC) surface (abbr. VB12(ad)/GC) in different pH buffer solutions have been described by using cyclic voltammetry (cv). It is found that VB12 and VB12(ad)/GC exhibit catalytic activity for the electroreduction of O2 according to two reduction peaks at -0.50 and -1.00 V vs. sce; but their electrocatalytic activity is very unstable. Based on the method of hydrodynamic amperometry [B. Miller and S. Bruckenstein, J. electrochem. Soc. 117, 1033 (1970)], some kinetic parameters for the electrocatalytic reduction of O2 by VB12(ad)/GC have been determined rapidly by using a linear rotation-scan method [Rongzhong Jiang and Shaojun Dong, Electrochim. Acta 35, 1451 (1990)]. These kinetic parameters indicate that the reduction of O2 on VB12(ad)/GC gives water predominantly in both potential ranges which correspond to those two reduction peaks. Possible reaction mechanisms have been suggested.

Molecular cloning, characterization and mRNA expression of peroxiredoxin in Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri

Peroxiredoxin V (PRX V) is known as an atypical 2-cysteine peroxiredoxin that protects the organisms against various oxidative stresses and functions in signal transduction. The cDNA of a PRX V gene (designated as CfPRX) was cloned from scallop Chlamys farreri. The full-length sequence of CfPRX cDNA was of 2,179 bp with a 564 bp open reading frame encoding a peptide of 187 amino acids. Sequence comparison showed that CfPRX shared higher identities with PRX Vs than that with other isoforms of PRX, indicating CfPRX was a member of the PRX V family. Fluorescent real-time quantitative PCR analysis revealed the presence of CfPRX transcripts in gill filaments, adductor muscle, heart, gonad, kidney and hemocytes, and the stimulation of Listonella anguillarum significantly (P < 0.01) enhanced the mRNA expression of CfPRX in hemocyte. These results indicated that CfPRX was a constitutive and inducible acute-phase protein which was involved in the immune resistance to L. anguillarum stimulation.

Fine-grained Pleistocene deepwater turbidite channel system on the slope of Qiongdongnan Basin, northern South China Sea

Recently, as oil exploitation has become focused on deepwater slope areas. more multi-channel high resolution 2D and 3D seismic data were acquired in the deepwater part of the Qiongdongnan Basin, northern South China Sea. Based on 3D seismic data and coherence time slice, RMS and 3D visualization, a series of deepwater channels were recognized on the slope that probably developed in the late Quaternary period. These channels trend SW-NE to W-E and show bifurcations, levees, meander loops and avulsions. High Amplitude Reflections (HARs), typical for channel-levee complexes, are of only minor importance and were observed in one of the channel systems. Most of the detected channels are characterized by low-amplitude reflections, and so are different from the typical coarse-grained turbidite channels that had been discovered worldwide. The absence of well data in the study area made it difficult to determine the age and lithology of these channels. Using a neighboring drill hole and published data about such depositional systems worldwide, the lithology of these channels is likely to be dominated by mudstones with interbedded thin sandstones. These channels are formed by turbidity currents originated from the little scale mountain river of mid-Vietnam in SW direction and were probably accompanied by a relative sea level drop in the last glacial age. These channels discovered on the northern South China Sea slope are likely to be fine-grained, mud-dominant and low N:G deposits in a deepwater paleogeographic setting. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. A study on the dependence of the micro-pore configurations on the volatilization and the burn processes of the organic compounds in the matrix of molten carbonate fuel cells

The micro-pore configurations on the matrix surface were studied by SEM. The matrix of molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) performance was also improved by the better coordination between the reasonable radius of the micro-pores and the higher porosity of the cell matrix. The many and complicated micro-pore configurations in the cell matrix promoted the volatilization of the organic additives and the burn of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). The smooth volatilization of the organic additives and the complete burn of PVB were the significant factors for the improved MCFC performance. Oxygen diffusion controlled-burn mechanism of PVB in the cell matrix was proposed. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Rapid authentication of ginseng species using microchip electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection

Ginseng is one of the most expensive Chinese herbal medicines and the effectiveness of ginseng depends strongly on its botanical sources and the use of different parts of the plants. In this study, a microchip electrophoresis method coupled with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-short tandem repeats (STR) technique was developed for rapid authentication of ginseng species. A low viscosity hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) solution was used as the sieving matrix for separation of the amplified STR fragments. The allele sizing of the amplified PCR products could be detected within 240 s or less. Good reproducibility and accuracy of the fragment size were obtained with the relative standard deviation for the allele sizes less than 1.0% (n = 11). At two microsatellite loci (CT 12, CA 33), American ginseng had a different allele pattern on the electropherograms compared with that of the Oriental ginseng. Moreover, cultivated and wild American ginseng can be distinguished on the basis of allele sizing. This work establishes the feasibility of fast genetic authentication of ginseng species by use of microchip electrophoresis.

Impact of Islamic values on HRM practices: an empirical study of Jordanian universities

Purpose This study aims to present an in-depth theoretical and practical analysis of HRM practice in the light of Islamic values and principles. It looks at the four main HRM functions of recruitment and selection, training and development, performance appraisal, and rewards, from the Islamic perspective. Besides establishing a theoretical base for the influence of Islam on HRM, it analyses the key characteristics of HRM practice as applied in Jordanian universities and analyses the extent to which Islamic values are embedded in that practice. Design/methodology/approach The paper draws on a structured questionnaire distributed to 500 respondents working in four Jordanian universities which sought to elicit the respondents views on the influence of Islamic values within specific HR functions. Findings The findings indicate that there is a diffusion of Islamic values into HRM practice in the participating organisations. The extent of the diffusion varies between the organisations; there is a clear indication that explicitly Islamic values are being practiced, albeit to a limited extent. Originality/value The role of spirituality and/or religion in shaping the working of contemporary organisations is not sufficiently recognised in the literature. This paper is a response to the limited number of research studies assessing the extent of the absorption of religious values into the management of human resources. The study undertaken examines the current status of HRM practice in Jordanian universities and contributes to deepening the contemporary understanding of interactions between Islamic values and the core HR functions.
