Qualified immigrants' success: exploring the motivation to migrate and to integrate

High-quality employees with international experience bring valuable advantages to internationally operating organizations. The growing number and importance of immigrants, and particularly qualified, university-educated immigrants, deserves more attention from international business practitioners and scholars. The market for highly qualified people within MNCs is increasingly becoming international, and ever more of them have migrated to a new country to advance their career. Such employees can be a source of competitive advantage for international firms. We use qualitative research with qualified immigrants (QIs) in France to argue that the success of QIs depends in large part on their motivation to integrate into their host country, which is largely explained by their motivation to migrate. From the qualitative data we derive four different types of qualified migrant, and suggest that the type will determine the success of the immigrant within, and outside, the organization. The relationship between the motivation to migrate and the motivation to integrate is moderated by “met expectations” and “organizational integration policies”, such that the effects of these, in turn, vary with type. Recognition of the types of QI and the moderating factors will be valuable for practitioners, as well as opening up research avenues for scholars.

Resting metabolic rates of two orbweb spiders: A first approach to evolutionary success of ecribellate spiders

Spiders are considered conservative with regard to their resting metabolic rate, presenting the same allometric relation with body mass as the majority of land-arthropods. Nevertheless, web-building is thought to have a great impact on the energetic metabolism, and any modification that affects this complex behavior is expected to have an impact over the daily energetic budget. We analyzed the possibility of the presence of the cribellum having an effect on the allometric relation between resting metabolic rate and body mass for an ecribellate species (Zosis geniculata) and a cribellate one (Metazygia rogenhoferi), and employed a model selection approach to test if these species had the same allometric relationship as other land-arthropods. Our results show that M. rogenhoferi has a higher resting metabolic rate, while Z. geniculata fitted the allometric prediction for land arthropods. This indicates that the absence of the cribellum is associated with a higher resting metabolic rate, thus explaining the higher promptness to activity found for the ecribellate species. If our result proves to be a general rule among spiders, the radiation of Araneoidea could be connected to a more energy-consuming life style. Money and Education: How Economic Distribution Corresponds to Academic Success

Urban sprawl is a significant issue in the United States, one effect of which is the departure of the wealth from cities. This study examined the distribution of wealth in Erie County, New York, focused around Buffalo. The question is then raised, why do those with the money leave the city, and to where do they go? While this study does not attempt to explain all of the reasons, it does examine two significant issues: quality of public school education, and proximity to main highways with easy access to the city. Using ArcGIS, I was able to place the public high schools and their relative ranking over a distribution of per capita income. The results of this analysis show that the wealthiest areas are located within the best school districts. Moreover, the areas where the wealth accumulates are directly connected by major highways.

How the delphi and AHP methods are aiding to define the critical success factors priorities in a digital factory project implementation

Digital factory is a concept that offers a collaborative approach to enhance product and production engineering processes through simulation. Products, processes and resources are modeled to be used to develop and test the product conception and manufacturing processes, before their use in the real factory. The purpose of this paper is to present the steps to identify the Critical Success Factors (CSF) priorities in a digital factory project implementation in a Brazilian company and how the Delphi and AHP Methods are aiding to identify these CSF priorities.
