Thirty-three groups of geochemically related natural lake and river waters collected from 368 sites scattered over East and West Africa, were investigated to determine correlations between their various ions and the patterns of change in their ionic composition across the African continent. The following nine significant correlations were found to exist in the entire area or in a major part of it: sodium and potassium; sodium and chloride; sodium and sulphate; potassium and ammonium; potassium and chloride; ammonium and nitrate; calcium and magnesium; magnesium and chloride; sulphate and chloride. When compared with the world average composition. The concentration of potassium in these waters was found to be high, that of calcium and nitrate was low. With respect to the area of East Africa only, trends in the pattern of change involving the ionic composition of the lake and river water and the longitude at which the sites were present, were found to exist for the ratio of sodium: conductivity (which showed an increase in the direction of West to East), magnesium: conductivity, and for the sum of calcium and magnesium: phosphate was generally found to increase in East Africa in the direction of west to East.

A shallow, highly productive, tropical lake is descrihed with a brief history of its commercial fishery. Three separate assessments of the present (1967-1970) yield are compared, with an apparent confirmation of the values derived from Fishery Department statistics over a period of 20 years. The seasonal change in the catch is noted with, an apparent anomaly shown by ohservations of canoe landings. Long-term trends during the period 1950-1969 are considered with a brief discussion of possible future trends in the fishery.

Nothobranchius guntheri is found in seasonal pools and streams in the coastal region of Tanzania. A population recurring annually in a pond near Kilosa has been studied. Growth in length was rapid and maximum mean lengths were attained within 11-12 and 7-8 weeks of hatching by males and females respectively. Males grew larger and exhibited wider variation in length than females. N. guentheri shows clear sexual dichromatism. No significant inequality in the sex ratio was found. Females with ripe eggs were found 7-8 weeks after hatching. Spawning continued throughout adult life and fecundity increased markedly with increasing length. In laboratory aquaria, aggressiveness between adult males was noted and females were actively driven on to the substratum preparatory to spawning. The diet of the fish pond consisted chiefly of aquatic and terrestrial insects, of which midge larvae and pupae were the most common. N. guentheri is exploited by man in the aquarist trade and for the biological control of mosquitoes. An extended redescription of the species is appended which includes N. melanospilus (Pfeffer) as a synonym.

In 1967 the then University College of Dar es Salaam built a small laboratory on the shore at Kunduchi, 16 km from the main campus and 24 km north of Dar es Salaam. This was used for undergraduate field courses, and as a base for staff from the University to carry out research. It soon became apparent that the urgent need for studies of the marine environment in the East African area, and the lack of existing facilities, necessitated the development of the Kunduchi Marine Biology station into a research establishment with its own staff of full time scientists. This operation began in 1970: necessary structural modifications have been made to the building, staff have been recruited, and the station has been equipped with an adequate range of field and laboratory apparatus. A varied programme of research is now actively under way.

The paper provides key for the identification of the East African marine fishes. Just like in most determination keys this one is based on the "either-or" principle, i.e. there is a single alternatIve at each point. A specimen either fits all the characters recorded, or fails to conform to one or more characters and you should then proceed to the next number, keeping this up until the fish to be identified does fit all the characters.

An ecological survey of the fisheries of Lake Baringo, Kenya was carried out between August, 1972 and August, 1973. The bionomics and population structure of T. nilotica is described. Sampling was done with multifilament gillnets of graded mesh sizes from 51 mm to 178 mm in approximately 12.5 mm increments. The Lake was divided into three sampling and ecologically different zones - the south, central and north zones. The size range of T. nilotica of both sexes caught was between 5 and 27 cm (mode 16 cm) with a mean length of 16.07 cm. For all the collections, males dominated (55.3%) and a higher proportion of males were caught in January, August and November. The smallest mature male and female was 9 and 10 cm respectively. Males grow faster and mature at larger sizes than females. 50% of all males and females mature at 17.4 and 16:4 cm respectively. The periods of intense spawning were between August and October and January to April. The Tilapia were feeding best in central and north zones and the feeding intensity was reduced in January. Two endoparasites Contracaecum sp. and Clinostomum sp. were isolated from the Tilapia. The "condition" of the fish was better in the north than in the other two zones.

Protein deficient diets are a standard way of life in many parts of East Africa;this of course tends to result in shorter life expectancy and chronic ill-health. Population increase is sufficiently high to outdistance the economic gains that may be made in various fields. With recurrent shortages of basic commodities not only in East Africa, but in many parts of the world, it is becoming increasingly clear that agricultural production practices must be maximised rapidly in order to meet the world's constantly expanding need for food. Here in East Africa, while our food requirements can be met most of the time, our protein requirements are far from being met. Yields from traditional fishery resources, must therefore be increased. The farming of fish (aquaculture)adds a new dimension to food production in general and high quality protein production in particular, in that it can be incorporated into other agricultural production activities.

We investigated the relationships of Asian bufonids using partial sequences of mitochondrial DNA genes. Twenty-six samples representing 14 species of Bufo from China and Vietnam and 2 species of Torrentophryne from China were examined. Three samples of Bufo viridis from Armenia and Georgia were also sequenced to make a comparison to its sibling tetraploid species B. danatensis. Bufo americanus, from Canada, was used as the outgroup. Sequences from the 12S ribosomal RNA, 16S ribosomal RNA, cytochrome b, and the control region were analyzed using parsimony. East Asian bufonids were grouped into two major clades. One clade included B. andrewsi, B. bankorensis, B. gargarizans, B. tibetanus, B. tuberculatus, its sister clade B. cryptotympanicus, and the 2 species of Torrentophryne. The second clade consisted of B. galeatus, B. himalayanus, B. melanostictus, and a new species from Vietnam. The placement of three taxa (B. raddei B. viridis, and its sister species, B. danatensis) was problematic. The genus Torrentophryne should be synonymized with Bufo to remove paraphyly. Because B. raddei does not belong to the clade that includes B. viridis and B. danatensis, it was removed from the viridis species group. The species status of B bankorensis from Taiwan is evaluated. In recent years, the healthcare sector has adopted the use of operational risk assessment tools to help understand the systems issues that lead to patient safety incidents. But although these problem-focused tools have improved the ability of healthcare organizations to identify hazards, they have not translated into measurable improvements in patient safety. One possible reason for this is a lack of support for the solution-focused process of risk control. This article describes a content analysis of the risk management strategies, policies, and procedures at all acute (i.e., hospital), mental health, and ambulance trusts (health service organizations) in the East of England area of the British National Health Service. The primary goal was to determine what organizational-level guidance exists to support risk control practice. A secondary goal was to examine the risk evaluation guidance provided by these trusts. With regard to risk control, we found an almost complete lack of useful guidance to promote good practice. With regard to risk evaluation, the trusts relied exclusively on risk matrices. A number of weaknesses were found in the use of this tool, especially related to the guidance for scoring an event's likelihood. We make a number of recommendations to address these concerns. The guidance assessed provides insufficient support for risk control and risk evaluation. This may present a significant barrier to the success of risk management approaches in improving patient safety. © 2013 Society for Risk Analysis.

Background: Short and long interspersed elements (SINEs and LINEs, respectively), two types of retroposons, are active in shaping the architecture of genomes and powerful tools for studies of phylogeny and population biology. Here we developed special protocol to apply biotin-streptavidin bead system into isolation of interspersed repeated sequences rapidly and efficiently, in which SINEs and LINEs were captured directly from digested genomic DNA by hybridization to bead-probe complex in solution instead of traditional strategy including genomic library construction and screening. Results: A new couple of SINEs and LINEs that shared an almost identical 3'tail was isolated and characterized in silver carp and bighead carp of two closely related species. These SINEs (34 members), designated HAmo SINE family, were little divergent in sequence and flanked by obvious TSD indicated that HAmo SINE was very young family. The copy numbers of this family was estimated to 2 x 10(5) and 1.7 x 10(5) per haploid genome by Real-Time qPCR, respectively. The LINEs, identified as the homologs of LINE2 in other fishes, had a conserved primary sequence and secondary structures of the 3'tail region that was almost identical to that of HAmo SINE. These evidences suggest that HAmo SINEs are active and amplified recently utilizing the enzymatic machinery for retroposition of HAmoL2 through the recognition of higher-order structures of the conserved 42-tail region. We analyzed the possible structures of HAmo SINE that lead to successful amplification in genome and then deduced that HAmo SINE, SmaI SINE and FokI SINE that were similar in sequence each other, were probably generated independently and created by LINE family within the same lineage of a LINE phylogeny in the genomes of different hosts. Conclusion: The presented results show the advantage of the novel method for retroposons isolation and a pair of young SINE family and its partner LINE family in two carp fishes, which strengthened the hypotheses containing the slippage model for initiation of reverse transcription, retropositional parasitism of SINEs on LINEs, the formation of the stem loop structure in 3'tail region of some SINEs and LINEs and the mechanism of template switching in generating new SINE family.

While it has been widely suggested that freshwater fishes from East Asia invaded the western Palaearctic, details about this process are largely unknown. Here, using the cytochrome b gene, we evaluated the phylogenetic relationships of a small group of Eurasian primary freshwater fishes (Cobitidae), which are widely distributed and species rich in East Asia and Europe, with the purpose of inferring their invasion process of Europe from East Asia. Though phylogenetic relationships of cobitids were not well resolved, our analysis could identify three sister groups formed by the European and East Asian cobitids, which brought new insights into the biogeography of the genera Cobitis, Misgurnus, and Sabanejewia. The present results support the view that Asian cobitid fishes may have invaded Europe at least five times independently, and once reverse colonization of European cobitids to East Asia could also be found. Ancestral Sabanejewia might have been the first cobitids to cross Siberia and invade the EMZS (Euro-Mediterranean zoogeographic subregion) about 33.54 million years ago (MYA). One lineage of Cobitis and the ancestor of Misgurnus fossilis (Linnaeus) almost in the same time invaded the Europe, responding to 16.71 MYA and 16.59 MYA, respectively. Three different lineages of Cobitis were found to have invaded the EMZS from East Asia, and once reverse invasion to East Asia occurred to one subclade of European Cobitis. And our data also suggest that the diversity of East Asian cobitid fishes, especially of the genus Cobitis, is greatly underestimated.

Investigations of protozoa were carried out during four surveys of East Dongting Lake, China. A total of 160 protozoan species belonging to 71 genera was identified, of which 53 were flagellates, 37 sarcodines, and 70 ciliates. Among them, Peritrichida (32.6% of frequency), Arcellinida (16.2%), Volvocales (13.61/6), Peridiniales (13.1%), and Chrysomonadales (9.1%) were the main groups and contributed to 84.5% of the overall species. Ciliates were mainly composed of sessile species and small species. The total protozoan abundance varied from 2,400 cells L-1 to 20,250 cells L-1. The highest protozoan abundance occurred in spring; the lowest number was in autumn. The highest abundance of ciliates occurred in spring and winter, whereas flagellates developed the highest abundance in,summer and autumn. Pearson correlation analysis and linear regressions indicated that chlorophyll a and water velocity were the main factors affecting ternporal and spatial variations of the protozoan abundance.
