A design and optimization procedure developed and used for a propeller installed on a twin-semitunnel-hull ship navigating in very shallow and icy water under heavy load conditions is presented. The base propeller for this vessel was first determined using classic design routines under open-water condition with existing model test data. In the optimization process, a panel method code (PROPELLA) was used to vary the pitch values and distributions and take into account the inflow wake distribution, tunnel gap, and cavitation effects. The optimized propeller was able to improve a ship speed of 0.02 knots higher than the desired speed and 0.06 knots higher than the classic B-series propeller. The analysis of the effect of inflow wake, hull tunnel, cavitation, and blade rake angle on propulsive performance is the focus of this paper.

The effect of the initial states (disordered perpendicular cylinder structure vs. parallel cylinder structure) on the crystallization of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) thin films during cyclohexane annealing was investigated. The cylindrical domains perpendicular or parallel to the surface were obtained by controlling the film thickness. During solvent annealing, for the film with the perpendicular cylinders, the ordering degree of cylinders was increased.

Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) nanorods with different diameters have been prepared by using anodic aluminum oxide templates, and the orientation of the sPS crystals in the nanorods has been investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy. It is found that the c axis of the beta' crystals preferentially oriented perpendicular to the axis of the nanorod, and the degree of orientation is lower as the diameter of the nanorod decreases. This unexpected result is attributed to nuclei formed at the surface of the nanopores and their subsequent growth, in addition to the preferential growth compatible with the pore direction by the nuclei formed in the bulk film and in the nanorods.

The cylindrical 'D'-size batteries were fabricated by polyaniline paste cathode and lithium foil anode sandwiched with microporous polypropylene separator. The electrolyte used was LiClO4 dissolved in a mixed solvent of propylene carbonate and dimethoxyethane. The results of charge/discharge curves, charge/discharge cycles, the short-circuit current, the open-circuit voltage storage and the change of discharge capacity with temperature, discharge current are reported.

Transmittance spectroelectrochemistry can be performed using a group of cylindrical microelectrodes. A dependence of absorbance on electrolytic charge during the potential step was derived. The rate constant of catalytic reaction of the ferrocyanide-ascorbic acid system was determined using single potential step-open circuit relaxation chronoabsorptometry. This is the first report that the reaction can still be considered as a pseudo-first-order reaction when the concentration of ascorbic acid is close to and even slightly lower than the concentration of ferrocyanide. The determined rate constant is in agreement with the reported value. The reason is that the diffusion of ascorbic acid toward electrode surface is contractive and the diffusion of the electrogenerated ferricyanide from the electrode surface to the bulk of solution is expansive.

The dielectric response of graded composites having general power-law-graded cylindrical inclusions under a uniform applied electric field is investigated. The dielectric profile of the cylindrical inclusions is modeled by the equation epsilon(i)(r)=c(b+r)(k) (where r is the radius of the cylindrical inclusions and c, b and k are parameters). Analytical solutions for the local electrical potentials are derived in terms of hypergeometric functions and the effective dielectric response of the graded composites is predicted in the dilute limit. Moreover, for a simple power-law dielectric profile epsilon(i)(r) = cr(k) and a linear dielectric profile epsilon(i)(r) = c(b + r), analytical expressions of the electrical potentials and the effective dielectric response are derived exactly from our results by taking the limits b -> 0 and k -> 1, respectively. For a higher concentration of inclusions, the effective dielectric response is estimated by an effective-medium approximation. In addition, we have discussed the effective response of graded cylindrical composites with a more complex dielectric profile of inclusion, epsilon(i)(r)=c(b+r)(k)e(beta r). The effective dielectric responses of linear composites with graded cylindrical particles are investigated under an external uniform electric field. As an example, with the Kummer function, we have obtained the analytical solutions of electric potentials of graded composites with a cylindrical inclusion particle of dielectric function profile epsilon(i) = cr(k)e(betar), where r is the inside distance of a point in cylindrical particle from the original point of cylindrical coordinates. In the dilute limit, the effective dielectric response is derived by means of the mean field method. For larger volume fraction, we have estimated the dielectric response of the graded composites with an effective medium approximation. Furthermore, from our results, we have discussed the effective responses of graded composites for power-law and exponential dielectric function profiles, respectively. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Effective dielectric responses of graded cylindrical composites are investigated when an external uniform field is applied to the composites. Considering linear random composites of cylindrical particles with a specific dielectric function, which varies along the radial direction of the particles, we have studied three cases of dielectric profiles: exponential function, linear and power-law profiles. For each case, the effective dielectric response of graded composites is given on the basis of exact solutions of the local potentials of composites in the dilute limit. For a larger volume fraction, we have proposed an effective medium approximation to estimate the effective dielectric response.

The effective property has been investigated theoretically in graded elliptical cylindrical composite's consisting of inhomogeneous graded elliptical cylinders and an isotropic matrix under external uniform electric field. As a theoretical model, the dielectric gradient profile in the elliptical cylinder is modeled by a power-law function of short semi-axis variable parameter (xi(2) - 1) in the elliptical cylindrical coordinates, namely epsilon(i)(xi) = c(k) (xi(2) - 1)(k), where c(k) and k are the parameters, and xi is the long semi-axis space variable in an elliptical cylindrical inclusion region. In the dilute limit, the local analytical potentials in inclusion and matrix regions are derived exactly by means of the hyper-geometric function, and the formulas are given for estimating the effective dielectric responses under the external lfield along (x) over cap- and (y) over cap -directions, respectively. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that our effective response formulas can be reduced to the well-known results of homogeneous isotropic elliptical cylindrical composites if we take the limit k -> 0 in graded elliptical cylindrical composites. Under an external alternating current (ac) field, the effective ac dielectric response of graded composites consisting of the graded cylindrical inclusion having complex permittivity profiles has been investigated theoretically. A model that the dielectric function is assumed to be a constant while the conductivity has a power-law dependence on the radial variable r, namely epsilon(i)(r) = A + cr(k)/i omega. is studied and the local analytical potentials of the inclusion and the host regions are derived in terms of hyper-geometric function. In the dilute limit, the effective ac dielectric response is predicted. Meanwhile, we have given the exact proof of the differential effective dipole approximation (DEDA) method, which is suitable to arbitrary graded profiles. Furthermore, we have given the analytical potentials and the effective ac dielectric responses of coated graded cylindrical composites for two cases, case (a) graded core and case (b) graded coated layer, having the graded dielectric profiles, respectively. In April 2008, the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) entered into an agreement with Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal to voluntarily undertake a special review of its 2006 Lyme disease guidelines. This agreement ended the Attorney General's investigation into the process by which the guidelines were developed. The IDSA agreed to convene an independent panel to conduct a one-time review of the guidelines. The Review Panel members, vetted by an ombudsman for potential conflicts of interest, reviewed the entirety of the 2006 guidelines, with particular attention to the recommendations devoted to post-Lyme disease syndromes. After multiple meetings, a public hearing, and extensive review of research and other information, the Review Panel concluded that the recommendations contained in the 2006 guidelines were medically and scientifically justified on the basis of all of the available evidence and that no changes to the guidelines were necessary.

BACKGROUND: Given the potential importance of epithelial plasticity (EP) to cancer metastasis, we sought to investigate biomarkers related to EP in men with localized prostate cancer (PC) for the association with time to PSA recurrence and other clinical outcomes after surgery. METHODS: Men with localized PC treated with radical prostatectomy at the Durham VA Medical Center and whose prostatectomy tissues were included in a tissue microarray (TMA) linked to long-term outcomes. We performed immunohistochemical studies using validated antibodies against E-cadherin and Ki-67 and mesenchymal biomarkers including N-cadherin, vimentin, SNAIL, ZEB1 and TWIST. Association studies were conducted for each biomarker with baseline clinical/pathologic characteristics an risk of PSA recurrence over time. RESULTS: Two hundred and five men contributed TMA tissue and had long-term follow-up (median 11 years). Forty-three percent had PSA recurrence; three died of PC. The majority had high E-cadherin expression (86%); 14% had low/absent E-cadherin expression. N-cadherin was rarely expressed (<4%) and we were unable to identify an E-to-N-cadherin switch as independently prognostic. No associations with clinical risk group, PSA recurrence or Gleason sum were noted for SNAIL, ZEB1, vimentin or TWIST, despite heterogeneous expression between patients. We observed an association of higher Ki-67 expression with Gleason sum (P=0.043), National Comprehensive Cancer Network risk (P=0.013) and PSA recurrence (hazard ratio 1.07, P=0.016). CONCLUSIONS: The expression of EP biomarkers in this cohort of men with a low risk of PC-specific mortality was not associated with aggressive features or PSA relapse after surgery.

The classical Purcell's vector method, for the construction of solutions to dense systems of linear equations is extended to a flexible orthogonalisation procedure. Some properties are revealed of the orthogonalisation procedure in relation to the classical Gauss-Jordan elimination with or without pivoting. Additional properties that are not shared by the classical Gauss-Jordan elimination are exploited. Further properties related to distributed computing are discussed with applications to panel element equations in subsonic compressible aerodynamics. Using an orthogonalisation procedure within panel methods enables a functional decomposition of the sequential panel methods and leads to a two-level parallelism.
