Systematic studies in manganites of spinel structure have been undertaken. We report on the magnetic properties of two particular cases, in which one of the transition metals, Mg2+ is non-magnetic (NiMgxMn2-xO4) or presents a stable oxidation state, Cu2+ (CoxCuyMnzO4, x + y + z = 3). The magnetic behaviour is described with respect to varying contents of cobalt, copper or manganese. A ferrimagnetic transition is observed at 110-120 K, which depends on the cobalt content. Presence of copper increases the coercive field by a factor of ten with respect to the parent compound NiMn2O4. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Chalcopyrite oxidation was evaluated with two acidophilic thiobacilli that are important in bioleaching processes. Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans in pure culture did not oxidize CuFeS2 but oxidized externally added S in the presence of CuFeS2. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans released Cu2+ and soluble Fe from chalcopyrite, and the time course lead to a gradual passivation of chalcopyrite whereby Cu2+ dissolution leveled off. Fe3+ acted as a chemical oxidant in CuFeS2 leaching and was reduced to Fe2+. Parallel bacterial re-oxidation of Fe2+ contributed to a high Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio and an increase in redox potential. Chemical oxidation of chalcopyrite was slow compared with A. ferrooxidans-initiated solubilization. X-ray analysis revealed new solid phases: (i) jarosite, found in solids from A. ferrooxidans cultures and in chemical controls that initially received Fe2+ or Fe3+, and (ii) S-0, found mostly in iron-amended A. ferrooxidans culture and the corresponding chemical controls. The effect of Cu2+ contents and of firing temperature on sintering and crystallite growth of nanocrystalline SnO2 xerogels was analyzed by thermoanalysis (mass loss (TG), linear shrinkage, and differential thermal analysis (DTA)), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structures) measurements. Samples were prepared by two methods: (a) coprecipitation of a colloidal suspension from aqueous solution containing both Sn(IV) and Cu(II) ions and (b) grafting copper(II) species on the surface of tin pride gel. The thermoanalysis has shown that the shrinkage associated with the mass loss decreases by increasing the amount of copper. The EXAFS measurements carried out at the Cu K edge have evidenced the presence of copper in substitutional solid solution for the dried xerogel prepared with 0.7 mol % of copper, while for higher concentration of doping, copper has been observed also at the external surface of crystallites. The solid solution is metastable and copper migrates toward the surface during firing. The XRPD and DTA results have shown a recrystallization process near 320 degrees C, which leads to crystallite growth. The presence of copper segregated near the crystallite surface controls its growth.

We report experiments of electron spin resonance (ESR) of Cu2+ in polycrystalline samples of CaCu3Ti4O12 post-annealed in different atmospheres. After being synthesized by solid state reaction, pellets of CaCu3Ti4O12 were annealed for 24 h at 1000 degrees C under air, Ar or O-2. Our temperature dependent ESR data revealed for all samples nearly temperature independent g value (2.15(1)) and linewidth for T > T-N approximate to 25 K. However, the values of ESR linewidth are strongly affected by the oxygen content in the sample. For instance, argon post-annealed samples show a much larger linewidth than the O-2 or air post-annealed samples. We attribute this broadening to an increase of the dipolar homogeneous broadening of the Cu2+ ESR lines due to the presence of oxygen vacancies which induce an S=1/2 spin inside the TiO6 octahedra. Correlation between a systematic dependence of the ESR linewidth on the oxygen content and the high dielectric constant of these materials is addressed. Also, ESR, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat data for a single crystal of CaCu3Ti4O12 and for polycrystals of CdCu3Ti4O12 are reported.

The ESR spectrum of CuCl2 adsorbed onto a silica gel surface chemically modified with the benzimidazole molecule showed that the surface complex has an octahedral symmetry with tetragonal distortion. The measured ESR parameters were g(parallel to) = 2.287, g(perpendicular to) = 2.062, A(parallel to) = 153 G and superhyperfine splitting A(N) = 15 G. The fit of the theoretical expressions to the experimental data was very reasonable. The effective spin orbit coupling constant for Cu2+ was reduced from its normal free ion value of lambda = -828 cm(-1) by as much as 30%. This reduction of lambda is normal in the solid state and in frozen solution complexes.

Superoxide radical (O2-) is a free radical that may be involved in various toxic processes. Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase catalyses the dismutation of the superoxide free radical and protects cells from oxidative damage, and it has been used clinically. The concentration of Ni2+ and Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity were measured in lungs of rats at time intervals of 5, 12, 19, 26, 33, and 40 days following an intratracheal injection of 127 nmol of NiCl2. Nickel chloride increased nickel content and resulted in a significant increase of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity in lungs. This elevation of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity was highest on the 12th day (approximately threefold) and is at levels comparable to controls rats on day 40 onwards. Since Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity was increased in lung throughout our experimental period without corresponding increases of Cu2+ and Zn2+, we speculate that the elevation of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase activity might be due to an increased half-life of the enzyme, induced by nickel.

The authors have studied the chromatographic behavior of parenteral preparations for pediatric use containing inorganic cations. After separation and identification by thin-layer chromatography, Mn2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+ were analyzed by a method based on reaction with an appropriate reagent and extraction with an organic solvent which yielded elution and preconcentration, resulting in an appropriate solution for colorimetric quantitation. Cr3+ cation was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry after appropriate chromatographic separation, using microcrystalline cellulose (adsorbent) and an acetone:water:hydrochloric acid mixture (80:5:8) as the mobile phase.

Perovskite type oxides have been intensively studied due to their interesting optical, electrical, and catalytic properties. Among perovskites the alkaline earth stannates stand out, being strontium stannates (SrSnO3) the most important material in ceramic technology among them due to their wide application as dielectric component. SrSnO3 has also been applied as stable capacitor and humidity sensor. In the present work, SrSnO3:Cu was synthesized by polymeric precursor method and heat treated at 700, 800, and 900 A degrees C for 4 h. After that, the material was characterized by thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Results indicated three thermal decomposition steps and confirmed the presence of strontium carbonate and Cu2+ reduction to Cu+ at higher dopant amounts. XRD patterns indicated that the perovskite crystallization started at 700 A degrees C with strontiatite (SrCO3) and cassiterite (SnO2) as intermediate phases, disappearing at higher temperatures. The amount of secondary phase was reduced with the increase in the Cu concentration.

The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the safety of mixer/loaders and applicators of paraquat to maize crop by knapsack sprayers and to determine the efficacy of safety measures applied to the sprayers. Potential dermal exposure (PDE) was evaluated in 22 worker body parts. The Cu2+ cation of a copper-based fungicide was used as tracer in the spray solution. Sanitary pads and cotton gloves were used to collect the pesticide solution on the sampled body parts. It was observed that paraquat application in front of the applicator's body (0.5 and 1.0 m lance) is unsafe because PDE was 1,979.8 ml/day (for 0.5 m lance) and 1,290.4 ml/day (for 1.0 m lance) and needs 50-80% and 37-69% control of PDE respectively. Control can be achieved by the use of protective garment on the legs and feet only, which received 92-93% of the PDE. Switching the spray nozzle to the back of the operator reduced the PDE by 98% and was sufficient to make working conditions safe, while maintaining the efficiency of application and making the work lighter and more comfortable. Mixer/loaders received 86% of the PDE to the hands and the work condition was safe (MOS > 1), however impermeable gloves could be used as a further safety measure.

The isotherms of adsorption of CuX2 (X=Cl-, Br-, ClO- 4) by silica gel chemically modified with 2-aminothiazole were studied in acetone and EtOH solutions, at 25°C. The 2-aminothiazole molecule, covalently bond to the silica gel surface, adsorbs CuX2 from solvent by forming a surface complex. At low loading, the electronic and E.S.R. spectral parameters indicate that the Cu2+ complexes have a distorted tetragonal symmetry. The d-d eletronic transition spectra show that for ClO- 4 complex, the peak of absorption do not change for any degree of metal loading whilst for Cl- and Br- complexes, the peak maxima shift to higher energy with lower metal loading. © Elsevier Science Ltd.

A new strategy for minimization of Cu2+ and Pb2+ interferences on the spectrophotometric determination of Cd2+ by the Malachite green (MG)-iodide reaction using electrolytic deposition of interfering species and solid phase extraction of Cd2+ in flow system is proposed. The electrolytic cell comprises two coiled Pt electrodes concentrically assembled. When the sample solution is electrolyzed in a mixed solution containing 5% (v/v) HNO3, 0.1% (v/v) H2SO4 and 0.5 M NaCl, Cu2+ is deposited as Cu on the cathode, Pb2+ is deposited as PbO2 on the anode while Cd2+ is kept in solution. After electrolysis, the remaining solution passes through an AG1-X8 resin (chloride form) packed minicolumn in which Cd2+ is extracted as CdCl4/2-. Electrolyte compositions, flow rates, timing, applied current, and electrolysis time was investigated. With 60 s electrolysis time, 0.25 A applied current, Pb2+ and Cu2+ levels up to 50 and 250 mg 1-1, respectively, can be tolerated without interference. For 90 s resin loading time, a linear relationship between absorbance and analyte concentration in the 5.00-50.0 μg Cd 1-1 range (r2 = 0.9996) is obtained. A throughput of 20 samples per h is achieved, corresponding to about 0.7 mg MG and 500 mg KI and 5 ml sample consumed per determination. The detection limit is 0.23 μg Cd 1-1. The accuracy was checked for cadmium determination in standard reference materials, vegetables and tap water. Results were in agreement with certified values of standard reference materials and with those obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry at 95% confidence level. The R.S.D. for plant digests and water containing 13.0 μg Cd 1-1 was 3.85% (n = 12). The recoveries of analyte spikes added to the water and vegetable samples ranged from 94 to 104%. A newly-isolated thermophilic strain of the zygomycete fungus Rhizomucor pusillus 13.36 produced highly active dextrinogenic and saccharogenic enzymes. Cassava pulp was a good alternative substrate for amylase production. Dextrinogenic and saccharogenic amylases exhibited optimum activities at a pH of 4.0-4.5 and 5.0 respectively and at a temperature of 75°C. The enzymes were highly thermostable, with no detectable loss of saccharogenic or dextrinogenic activity after 1 h and 6 h at 60°C, respectively. The saccharogenic activity was inhibited by Ca2+ while the dextrinogenic was indifferent to this ion. Both activities were inhibited by Fe2+ and Cu2+ Hydrolysis of soluble starch by the crude enzyme yielded 66% glucose, 19.5% maltose, 7.7% maltotriose and 6.6% oligosaccharides.
