Dataset containing meiobenthos data for samples collected during the September 2008 Sesame Cruise in the North-West Black Sea on board of the Romanian R/V Mare Nigrum. Meiobenthos samples were collected in 5 stations, using a multicorer MARK II-400. The dataset includes 5 samples analysed for meiobenthos species composition, abundance and biomass. The entire washed sample was analyzed under the binocular stereomicroscope. Meiobenthic species were identified and enumerated; some meiobenthic species were identified and enumerated only at higher taxonomic level. Taxonomic identification was done at GEOECOMAR.

The dataset is composed of 46 samples from 9 stations. The phytoplankton samples were collected by 5l Niskin bottles attached to the CTD system. The sampling depths were selected according to the CTD profiles and the in situ fluorometer readings. The samples (50 ml sea water) were preserved with prefiltered (0.2 micron) glutardialdehyde solution (1.5 ml of commercial glutardialdehyde (25%)) into dark colored glass bottles. Preserved samples were poured into 10 or 25 ml settling chambers (Hydro-Bios) for cells to settle on the bottom over a day. Species identification and enumeration were done under an inverted microscope (Olympus IX71). At least 400 specimen were tried to be counted in each sample.

A description is given of a gamma-ray spectrometer complex consisting of four interchangeable, low-background NaI(Tl) crystals that operate simultaneously. The system is used in determination of concentrations of natural radioactive elements and sedimentation rates of bottom sediments by the ionium method. Three detector sizes are used, depending on amount of material available: 80x80; 100x100, and 150x150. The system is operated clockwise and data are brought out on a punch tape; results are computer-processed. Examples are shown of the complex use in determining sedimentation rates of bottom sediments in the Southeast Pacific and concentrations of natural radioactive elements in DSDP Hole 381.
