The perovskite structure in Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 can be stabilized by the addition of Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 and PbTiO3.Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 assists in lowering the sintering temperature and shifting the Curie temperature of ceramics while PbTiO3 helps to optimize the dielectric properties. The phase stability and dielectric properties of several compositions in the Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 ternary relaxor ferroelectric system were investigated for possible capacitor applications. The effect of calcining and sintering temperature on the stability of perovskite phase in PZN rich compositions was studied extensively as a function of composition. The boundary line separating perovskite and mixed phases was determined for compositions near PZN. Several compositions can be sintered below 1050°C. The dielectric properties of compositions near the mixed phase boundary showed strong dependence on the percentage of pyrochlore phase. Compositions with a dielectric constant of 12.500 at room temperature have been identified which meet Z5T and Y5U specifications for dielectric constant and tan δ.

Indexing of a decagonal quasicrystal using the scheme utilizing five planar vectors and one perpendicular to them is examined in detail. A method for determining the indices of zone axes that a reciprocal vector would make in a decagonal phase of any periodicity has been proposed. By this method, the location of the zone axes made by any reciprocal vector can be predicted. The orthogonality condition has been simplified for the zone axes containing twofold vectors. The locations of zone axes have also been determined by an alternative method, utilizing spherical trigonometric calculations, which confirm the zone-axis locations given by the indices. The effect of one-dimensional periodicity on the indices and the accuracy of the zone-axis determination is discussed. Rules for the formation of zone axes between several reciprocal vectors and the prediction of all the reciprocal vectors in a zone are evolved.

Nanoporous structures are widely used for many applications and hence it Is important to investigate their thermal stability. We study the stability of spherical nanoporous aggregates using phase-field simulations that explore systematically the effect of grain boundary diffusion, surface diffusion, and grain boundary mobility on the pathways for microstructural evolution. Our simulations for different combinations of surface and GB diffusivity and GB mobility show four distinct microstructural pathways en route to 100% density: multiple dosed pores, hollow shells, hollow shells with a core, and multiple interconnected pores. The microstructures from our simulations are consistent with experimental observations in several different systems. Our results have important implications for rational synthesis of hollow nanostructures or aggregates with open pores, and for controlling the stability of nanoporous aggregates that are widely used for many applications.

We report here an easily reversible set-reset process in a new Ge15Te83Si2 glass that could be a promising candidate for phase change random access memory applications. The I-V characteristics of the studied sample show a comparatively low threshold electric field (E-th) of 7.3 kV/cm. Distinct differences in the type of switching behavior are achieved by means of controlling the on state current. It enables the observation of a threshold type for less than 0.7 mA beyond memory type (set) switching. The set and reset processes have been achieved with a similar magnitude of 1 mA, and with a triangular current pulse for the set process and a short duration rectangular pulse of 10 msec width for the reset operation. Further, a self-resetting effect is seen in this material upon excitation with a saw-tooth/square pulse, and their response of leading and trailing edges are discussed. About 6.5 x 10(4) set-reset cycles have been undertaken without any damage to the device. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. doi: 10.1063/1.3574659]

This paper presents a model study to understand the effect of surfactants on the physicochemical properties of human hair. FT-IR ATR spectroscopy has been employed to understand the chemical changes induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on human scalp hair. In particular, the SDS induced changes in the secondary structure of protein present in the outer protective layer of hair, i.e. cuticle, have been investigated. Conformational changes in the secondary structure of protein were studied by curve fitting of the amide I band after every phase of SDS treatment. It has been found that SDS brings rearrangements in the protein backbone conformations by transforming beta-sheet structure to random coil and beta-turn. Additionally, AFM and SEM studies were carried out to understand the morphological changes induced on the hair surface. SEM and AFM images demonstrated the rupture and partial erosion of cuticle sublayers.

A simple method for the preparation of monophasic beta-SiAlON using nitridation of Si and AIN with an oxygen partial pressure of 10(-4) atm is described. The effect of the AlN/Si ratio in the initial mixture on the formation of beta-SiAlON is discussed. The likely mechanism of the formation of beta-SiAlON is outlined.

We incorporate the effects of fluctuations in a density functional analysis of the freezing of a colloidal liquid in the presence of an external potential generated by interfering laser beams. A mean-field treatment, using a density functional theory, predicts that with the increase in the strength of the modulating potential, the freezing transition changes from a first order to a continuous one via a tricritical point for a suitable choice of the modulating wavevectors. We demonstrate here that the continuous nature of the freezing transition at large values of the external potential V-e survives the presence of fluctuations. We also show that fluctuations tend to stabilize the liquid phase in the large V-e regime.

Aqueous phase oxidation of sulphur dioxide at low concentrations catalysed by a PVP-Cu complex in the solid phase and dissolved Cu(II) in the liquid phase is studied in a rotating catalyst basket reactor (RCBR). The equilibrium adsorption of Cu(II) and S(VI) on PVP particles is found to be of the Langmuir-type. The diffusional effects of S(IV) species in PVP-Cu resin are found to be insignificant whereas that of product S(VI) are found to be significant. The intraparticle diffusivity of S(VI) is obtained from independent tracer experiments. In the oxidation reaction HSO3- is the reactive species. Both the S(IV) species in the solution, namely SO2(aq) and HSO3- get adsorbed onto the active PVP-Cu sites of the catalyst, but only HSO3- undergoes oxidation. A kinetic mechanism is proposed based on this feature which shows that SO2(aq) has a deactivating effect on the catalyst. A rate model is developed for the three-phase reaction system incorporating these factors along with the effect of concentration of H2SO4 on the solubility of SO2 in the dilute aqueous solutions of Cu(II). Transient oxidation experiments are conducted at different conditions of concentration of SO2 and O-2 in the gas phase and catalyst concentration, and the rate parameters are estimated from the data. The observed and calculated profiles are in very good agreement. This confirms the deactivating effect of nonreactive SO2(aq) on the heterogeneous catalysis.

The effect of aluminosilicate (Al2SiO5) on the upturn characteristics of ZnO varistor ceramics has been investigated. Addition of Al2SiO5 shifts the point of upturn above 10(4) A cm(-2). The extended nonlinearity in the high current density region is better correlatable to the presence of higher density of trap stales and changing pattern of trap depths at the grain boundary interface as much as the grain interior conductivity. Microstructure studies show the formation and involvement of a liquid phase during sintering. The secondary phases, predominantly are antimony spinel, Zn7Sb2O12, zinc silicate, Zn2SiO4 and magnesium aluminium silicate. MgAl2Si3O10. Energy dispersive X-ray analyses (EDAX) show that Al and Si are distributed more in the grain boundaries and within the secondary phases than in the grain interiors. Capacitance-voltage analyses and dielectric dispersion studies indicate the presence of negative capacitance and associated resonance, indicative of the oscillatory charge redistribution involving increased trapping at the interface states. The admittance spectroscopy data show that the type of trap slates remains unaltered whereas the addition of Al2SiO5 increases the density of low energy traps. Properties of cast aluminium matrix composites are greatly influenced by the nature of distribution of reinforcing phase in the matrix and matrix microstructural length scales, such as grain size, dendrite arm spacing, size and morphology of secondary matrix phases, etc. Earlier workers have shown that SIC reinforcements can act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for Si during solidification of Al-Si-SiC composites. The present study aims at a quantitative understanding of the effect of SiC reinforcements on secondary matrix phases, namely eutectic Si, during solidification of A356 Al-SiC composites. Effect of volume fraction of SiC particulate on size and shape of eutectic Si has been studied at different cooling rates. Results indicate that an increase in SiC volume fraction leads to a reduction in the size of eutectic Si and also changes its morphology from needle-like to equiaxed. This is attributed to the heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic Si on SiC particles. However, SiC particles are found to have negligible influence on DAS. Under all the solidification conditions studied in the present investigation, SiC particles are found to be rejected by the growing dendrites. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Systematic ab initio molecular orbital studies of the conformational equilibria and vibrational spectra of dipropionamide using the basis sets 6-31g(d) and 6-31++G(d,p) have been carried out. The vibrational spectra of dipropionamide have been satisfactorily interpreted taking into account the agreement between the calculated frequencies, infrared and Raman band intensities and the shifts in the spectra of deuterated molecules with those observed. The previous assignments of most of the vibrational bands are well confirmed, a few bands need reassignment, however. The solvent effects were investigated by self-consistent reaction field theory using dipole and self-consistent isodensity polarized continuum model methods. The introduction of a dielectric medium has only a marginal effect on the conformational equilibria and vibrational spectra. However, the calculated changes in geometry and vibrational spectra on going from the gas phase to the solution phase are in accord with the increasing weight of the dipolar resonance structure in polar solvents. The dynamics of three liquid crystals, 4'(pentyloxy)-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5-OCB), 4'-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5-CB), and 1-isothiocyanato-(4-propylcyclohexyl)benzene (3-CHBT), are investigated from very short time (similar to1 ps) to very long time (>100 ns) as a function of temperature using optical heterodyne detected optical Kerr effect experiments. For all three liquid crystals, the data decay exponentially only on the longest time scale (> several ns). The temperature dependence of the long time scale exponential decays is described well by the Landau-de Gennes theory of the randomization of pseudonematic domains that exist in the isotropic phase of liquid crystals near the isotropic to nematic phase transition. At short time, all three liquid crystals display power law decays. Over the full range of times, the data for all three liquid crystals are fit with a model function that contains a short time power law. The power law exponents for the three liquid crystals range between 0.63 and 0.76, and the power law exponents are temperature independent over a wide range of temperatures. Integration of the fitting function gives the empirical polarizability-polarizability (orientational) correlation function. A preliminary theoretical treatment of collective motions yields a correlation function that indicates that the data can decay as a power law at short times. The power law component of the decay reflects intradomain dynamics. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Current analytical work on the effect of convection on the late stages of spinodal decomposition in liquids is briefly described. The morphology formed during the spinodal decomposition process depends on the relative composition of the two species. Droplet spinodal decomposition occurs when the concentration of one of the species is small. Convective transport has a significant effect on the scaling laws in the late-stage coarsening of droplets in translational or shear flows. In addition, convective transport could result in an attractive interaction between non-Brownian droplets which could lead to coalescence. The effect of convective transport for the growth of random interfaces in a near-symmetric quench was analysed using an area distribution function, which gives the distribution of surface area of the interface in curvature space. It was found that the curvature of the interface decreases proportional to time t in the late stages of spinodal decomposition, and the surface area also decreases proportional to t.

We have studied the power spectral density [S(f) = gamma/f(alpha)] of universal conductance fluctuations (UCF's) in heavily doped single crystals of Si, when the scatterers themselves act as the primary source of dephasing. We observed that the scatterers, with internal dynamics like two-level-systems, produce a significant, temperature-dependent reduction in the spectral slope alpha when T less than or similar to 10 K, as compared to the bare 1/f (alphaapproximate to1) spectrum at higher temperatures. It is further shown that an upper cutoff frequency (f(m)) in the UCF spectrum is necessary in order to restrict the magnitude of conductance fluctuations, [(deltaG(phi))(2)], per phase coherent region (L-phi(3)) to [(deltaGphi)(2)](1/2) less than or similar to e(2)/h. We find that f(m) approximate to tau(D)(-1), where tau(D) = L-2/D, is the time scale of the diffusive motion of the electron along the active length (L) of the sample (D is the electron diffusivity).

The results of the studies on the effect of rare earth Nd doping on the phase formation behavior and electrical properties of sol-gel derived Pb-1.05(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O-3 (PZT) thin films are presented. The perovskite phase is obtained up to 5 at. % doping and beyond that pyrochlore phase was found to coexist with the perovskite phase in all the films. The transition temperature of undoped lead zirconate titanate (PZT) film was found to be reduced with Nd doping. The Nd doped films also exhibited typical relaxor-type behavior and a diffuse phase transition, similar to that observed in relaxor materials. The introduction of Nd into the PZT lattice probably introduces disorder in the B site of ABO(3) lattice, which causes the observed dielectric relaxation. Efforts were made to isolate the irreversible component contributions in low field dielectric and high field polarization switching behavior. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.
