Monitoring oil pollution by using students to count tarballs on beaches. Samples were taken between 2006 and 2010; a significant relationship was demonstrated between the abundance of tarballs and exposure to shipping lanes. The contribution of local communities to monitoring marine pollution was also demonstrated.

Assessment of the Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) and the Hilsa shad (Tenualosa ilisha) fisheries in BOBLME countries.Each country was benchmarked against three principles; status of stocks, impact of fisheries on the environment and management frameworks in place. A wide range of indicators was used with a simple color-coded scoring system allowing easy identification of both strengths and weaknesses in those three areas. Individual country assessments are also included.

Status papers on resources, livelihoods and ecosystem approach to fisheries in the Gulf of Mannar(GoM) were presented.Five priority initiatives were agreed: collaborative effort in conservation and management of charismatic species (e.g. dugong),capacity building and training,education and awareness building, strengthening of data collection and sharing of information.
