The extent of exposure of residents of Changqing (Guizhou, PR China) to arsenic through coal-burning was investigated. Despite the low coal-arsenic content (56.3 +/- 42.5 mg As kg(-1)) when compared with coals collected at different location and times from the same province, more than 30% of the study subjects have shown symptoms of arsenicosis. Coal, urine, hair, and water samples were collected in mid-September 2001 and analysed for arsenic. The average urinary and hair-arsenic concentrations in the exposed subjects were 71.4 +/- 37.1 mug As g(-1) creatinine (control 41.6 +/- 12.1) and 7.99 +/- 8.16 mg kg(-1), respectively. A positive correlation between the hair and urinary-arsenic concentration (R-2 = 0.601) was found. There was no significant difference between females and males for both urinary and hair-arsenic concentrations. Females were found to have a higher dimethylarsinic acid but lower percentages of inorganic arsenic and monomethylarsonic acid in their urine than males. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. This study aimed to identify potential factors responsible for geographically structured morphological variation within the widespread Australian frogs Limnodynastes tasmaniensis Gunther and L. peronii Dumeril & Bibron. There was support for James's rule, and both latitude and present climate explained large amounts of the variation in body size and shape (particularly in L. peronii). There was also some support for the influence of several biogeographical barriers. Finally, both species were sexually dimorphic for body size and the degree of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) varied geographically. Climate was an important explanation for SSD variation in L. peronii, while latitude was most important for L. tasmaniensis. Geographical variations in sexual selection via male-male physical competition and climate-related resources are suggested as potential explanations for SSD variation in L. peronii. The differences in physical properties of air and water pose unique behavioural and physiological demands on semiaquatic animals. The aim of this study was to describe the diving behaviour of the freshwater crocodile Crocodylus johnstoni in the wild and to assess the relationships between diving, body temperature, and heart rate. Time-depth recorders, temperature-sensitive radio transmitters, and heart rate transmitters were deployed on each of six C. johnstoni (4.0-26.5 kg), and data were obtained from five animals. Crocodiles showed the greatest diving activity in the morning (0600-1200 hours) and were least active at night, remaining at the water surface. Surprisingly, activity pattern was asynchronous with thermoregulation, and activity was correlated to light rather than to body temperature. Nonetheless, crocodiles thermoregulated and showed a typical heart rate hysteresis pattern (heart rate during heating greater than heart rate during cooling) in response to heating and cooling. We studied inheritance at three microsatellite loci in eight F-1 and two F-2 families of the body (clothes) louse of humans, Pediculus humanus. The alleles of heterozygous female-parents were always inherited in a Mendelian fashion in these families. Alleles from heterozygous male-parents, however, were inherited in two different ways: (i) in a Mendelian fashion and (ii) in a non-Mendelian fashion, where males passed to their offspring only one of their two alleles, that is, 100% nonrandom transmission. In male body lice, where there was non-Mendelian inheritance, the paternally inherited set of alleles was eliminated. We interpret this pattern of inheritance as evidence for extreme transmission ratio distortion of paternal alleles in this species.

In-vitro calcification of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA)-based hydrogels in simulated body fluid (SBF) under a steady/batch system without agitation or stirring the solutions has been investigated. It was noted that the formation of calcium phosphate (CaP) deposits primarily proceeded through spontaneous precipitation. The CaP deposits were found both on the surface and inside the hydrogels. It appears that the effect of chemical structure or reducing the relative number of oxygen atoms in the copolymers on the degree of calcification was only important at the early stage of calcification. The morphology of the CaP deposits was observed to be spherical aggregates with a thickness of the CaP layer less than 0.5 mu m. Additionally, the CaP deposits were found to be poorly crystalline or to have nano-size crystals, or to exist mostly as an amorphous phase. Characterization of the CaP phases in the deposits revealed that the deposits were comprised mainly of whitlockite [Ca9MgH(PO4)(7)] type apatite and DCPD (CaHPO4 center dot 2H(2)O) as the precursors of hydroxyapatite [Ca-10(PO4)(6)(OH)(2)]. The presence of carbonate in the deposits was also detected during the calcification of PHEMA based hydrogels in SBF solution.
