Quelles sont ces conditions qui ont rendu possibles les massacres administrés sous le régime nazi? La résolution de cette énigme qui se solde sur l’échec de l’Auflkärung nous dévoile une nécessité, celle d’une transformation radicale à la fois de l’éthique et de la métaphysique dans sa conception de la vérité. Celle-ci se présente à nous sous la forme d’une norme morale : « Dans leur état de non-liberté, Hitler a imposé aux hommes un nouvel impératif catégorique; penser et agir en sorte qu’Auschwitz ne se répète pas ». Mística y anuncio : un acceso ignorado a la teología trinitaria de W. Pannenberg

En el marco de la renovación actual de la teología trinitaria, el teólogo luterano W. Pannenberg es una figura emblemática. En la presente contribución se ofrece una reseña de dos “Predigten” referidas a la Trinidad, las únicas dos pláticas litúrgicas publicadas por el autor sobre el tema. La primera, de 1969, es analizada en estrecha vinculación con su ‘sucesora’, de 1998. El arco temporal que media entre ambas, el género literario y su conexión temática conforman un acceso pastoral-espiritual a la teología trinitaria pannenberguiana, acceso ‘novedoso’, en razón de la escasa atención dispensada a esos textos en la literatura secundaria referida al asunto. En la exposición del autor se ponen de relieve la amenaza en la conciencia de la fe actual que implica identificar a Dios con nuestras representaciones, a menudo no trinitarias, de un lado, la impronta escatológica de la revelación divina en la tradición judeo-cristiana, y la correspondiente problematicidad histórica de la realidad de Dios, de otro lado. A ello hay que sumar el arraigo antropológico de la religiosidad, el valor trinitario de una teología de corte paulino, y la riqueza de “la mística trinitaria” del cristianismo.

Flood of September 20-23, 1969 in the Gadsden County area, Florida

The center of low pressure of a tropical disturbance which moved northward in the Gulf of Mexico, reached land between Panama City and Port St. Joe, Florida, on September 20, 1969. This system was nearly stationary for 48 hours producing heavy rainfall in the Quincy-Havana area, 70-80 miles northeast of the center. Rainfall associated with the tropical disturbance exceeded 20 inches over a part of Gadsden County, Florida, during September 20 through 23, 1969, and the maximum rainfall of record occurred at Quincy with 10.87 inches during a 6-hour period on September 21. The 48-hour maximum of 17.71 inches exceeded the 1 in 100-year probability of 16 inches for a 7-day period. The previous maximum rainfall of record at Quincy (more than 12 inches) was on September 14-15, 1924. The characteristics of this historical storm were similar in path and effect to the September 1969 tropical disturbance. Peak runoff from a 1.4-square mile area near Midway, Florida, was 1,540 cfs (cubic feet per second) per square mile. A peak discharge of 45,600 cfs on September 22 at the gaging station on the Little River near Quincy exceeded the previous peak of 25,400 cfs which occurred on December 4, 1964. The peak discharge of 89,400 cfs at Ochlockonee River near Bloxham exceeded the April 1948 peak of 50,200 cfs, which was the previous maximum of record, by 1.8 times. Many flood-measurement sites had peak discharges in excess of that of a 50-year flood. Nearly $200,000 was spent on emergency repairs to roads. An additional $520,000 in contractual work was required to replace four bridges that were destroyed. Agricultural losses were estimated at $1,000,000. (44 page document)

The possibilities and dangers in using malachite green in pisciculture.[Translation from: Informatsionnyi Byulleten Biologiya Vnutrennikh Vod No.3 17-21, 1969.]

For many years a dye has been used in the practise of pisciculture and pond management, which is known by the name of malachite green, and is used to combat fungus on fish, fish eggs and external animal parasites on fish. The authors describe the problem of the application of malachite green in pisciculture and undertake special, complementary research.

The Riesz space structure of an Abelian W*-algebra

Let M be an Abelian W*-algebra of operators on a Hilbert space H. Let M₀ be the set of all linear, closed, densely defined transformations in H which commute with every unitary operator in the commutant M’ of M. A well known result of R. Pallu de Barriere states that if ɸ is a normal positive linear functional on M, then ɸ is of the form T → (Tx, x) for some x in H, where T is in M. An elementary proof of this result is given, using only those properties which are consequences of the fact that ReM is a Dedekind complete Riesz space with plenty of normal integrals. The techniques used lead to a natural construction of the class M₀, and an elementary proof is given of the fact that a positive self-adjoint transformation in M₀ has a unique positive square root in M₀. It is then shown that when the algebraic operations are suitably defined, then M₀ becomes a commutative algebra. If ReM₀ denotes the set of all self-adjoint elements of M₀, then it is proved that ReM₀ is Dedekind complete, universally complete Riesz spaces which contains ReM as an order dense ideal. A generalization of the result of R. Pallu de la Barriere is obtained for the Riesz space ReM₀ which characterizes the normal integrals on the order dense ideals of ReM₀. It is then shown that ReM₀ may be identified with the extended order dual of ReM, and that ReM₀ is perfect in the extended sense.

Some secondary questions related to the Riesz space ReM are also studied. In particular it is shown that ReM is a perfect Riesz space, and that every integral is normal under the assumption that every decomposition of the identity operator has non-measurable cardinal. The presence of atoms in ReM is examined briefly, and it is shown that ReM is finite dimensional if and only if every order bounded linear functional on ReM is a normal integral.

On the fishes and fisheries of Lake Baringo

Six fish species are known to occur in Lake Baringo. Tilapia nilotica Linnaeus 1757, Barbus gregorii Boulenger 1902, Clarias mossambicus Peters 1852 and Labeo cylindricus Peters 1852 were recorded in 1930-31. In 1969, two more fish species were identified: Aplocheilichthys sp. and Barbus lineomaculatus Boulenger 1903. T. nilotica is the only fish species commercially exploited. But the catches, catch per unit effort and the mean size of fish caught in commercial gillnets have declined since 1968. B. gregorii is important in the subsistence rod-and-line fishery. L. cylindricus, C. mossambicus, B. lineomaculatus and Aplochelichthys sp. are not commercially exploited.

Cancer mortality in IBM endicott plant workers, 1969-2001: An update on a NY production plant

BACKGROUND: In response to concerns expressed by workers at a public meeting, we analyzed the mortality experience of workers who were employed at the IBM plant in Endicott, New York and died between 1969-2001. An epidemiologic feasibility assessment indicated potential worker exposure to several known and suspected carcinogens at this plant. METHODS: We used the mortality and work history files produced under a court order and used in a previous mortality analysis. Using publicly available data for the state of New York as a standard of comparison, we conducted proportional cancer mortality (PCMR) analysis. RESULTS: The results showed significantly increased mortality due to melanoma (PCMR = 367; 95% CI: 119, 856) and lymphoma (PCMR = 220; 95% CI: 101, 419) in males and modestly increased mortality due to kidney cancer (PCMR = 165; 95% CI: 45, 421) and brain cancer (PCMR = 190; 95% CI: 52, 485) in males and breast cancer (PCMR = 126; 95% CI: 34, 321) in females. CONCLUSION: These results are similar to results from a previous IBM mortality study and support the need for a full cohort mortality analysis such as the one being planned by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Adorno et le projet d'une théorie dialectique de l'oeuvre d'art

Le projet d’une théorie dialectique de l’œuvre d’art est sans doute un des plus complexes que Theodor Adorno ait tenu en haleine, projet qui table sur les horizons théoriques les plus diversifiés du philosophe de Francfort. Il ne s’agit donc pas ici d’en résumer la pertinence et les prémisses, de rendre justice à sa pleine complexité. Ce que je propose bien plutôt de faire c’est de développer trois façons inter-reliées de comprendre ce projet. En partant d’abord de la situation de l’esthétique contemporaine à Adorno, nous voudrions regarder en face la solution qu’offre la Théorie esthétique pour revitaliser l’esthétique philosophique. Il s’agit donc d’abord de questionner les catégories traditionnelles de l’esthétique qui semblent inadéquates à la réalité de l’art moderne « à l’époque où il devient objet de réflexion ». Le second aspect concerne l’interprétation et la méthode de présentation. « L’essai comme forme » qu’Adorno exécute et développe de pair avec la tendance parataxique de la poésie d’Hölderlin est l’objet des Notes sur la littérature. Ces travaux font écho à des notions clefs de la Théorie esthétique, déjà en germes dans « L’actualité de la philosophie » : l’interprétation, le contenu de vérité et le caractère énigmatique. Je propose finalement de restituer une certaine évolution du matériau-dissonance, ce qui recoupe et « matérialise » les deux premières perspectives.
