This study aimed to determine the optimal intake of lysine and threonine for broiler breeder hens. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the responses of birds to digestible lysine (Lys) and threonine (Thr). Eight treatments were assessed in both experiments, with six replicates of eight birds in the Lys experiment and ten birds in the Thr experiment. The dietary levels of Lys and Thr were obtained by a dilution technique. The experimental period was ten weeks for each amino acid studied, which included six weeks of adaptation and four weeks of data collection. The amino acid intake, egg mass and body weight were adjusted using a Reading model. Based on the model coefficients, the cost of the synthetic amino acids sources and the price of fertile eggs determined the intake of each amino acid to maximize. The minimum intake of Lys and Thr reduced egg production by 40 and 30%, respectively, the weight of the eggs decreased by 12 and 9% with the same intake of Lys and Thr, respectively. The models generated by predicting Lys and Thr intake were as follows: Lys=11 x E+31 x W and Thr=9.5 x E+32 x W, where E=egg mass, g/bird per day, and W=body weight, kg/bird. Based on the models, 3 kg birds with an egg mass production of 50 g/day require 643 mg/bird per day of Lys and 569 mg/bird per day of Thr. The optimum economic intake was calculated at 954 and 834 mg/bird per day for Lys and Thr, respectively, reflecting a dietary concentration of 0.636% Lys and 0.556% Thr for a feed intake of 150 g/bird per day. Despite remarkable significance of Pantanal for the conservation of aquatic birds, the status of their populations, the spatiotemporal patterns of distribution and habitat use and structure of communities are little known. Thus, we studied three aquatic environments (Negro river, bays and salines) from 2007 to 2009 in the Nhecolandia Pantanal to verify the distribution and composition of aquatic birds and also if there is significant seasonal influence on these aspects. We adopted the transect method (288 hours of sampling) and recorded 135 species (7.834 individuals). The Negro river showed the highest diversity, while the salines the lowest. The similarity of aquatic bird communities was higher between bays and salines, followed by Negro river and bays and lower between salines and Negro river. The equidistribution is more variable in the salines and more stable in the Negro river. The environments strongly differ from each other in aquatic bird composition in space (habitat use and distribution) and time (seasonal water fluctuations). The diversity of bird community in the dry season varies significantly in the salines, followed by the bays and more stable in the Negro river. The Negro river, regardless of large annual amplitude of flow, is more seasonally stable since its riparian vegetation is continuous (not isolated) and constant. These aspects provide better conditions to stay all year, contributing to decrease the seasonal nomadic tendencies of aquatic birds. Finally, all these data provide strong arguments to the preservation of all phytophysiognomies in the Nhecolandia sub-region of Pantanal, but with special attention to the salines widely used by many flocks of aquatic birds (mainly in the dry season) and migrant and/or rare species restricted to this habitat.

Evidences suggest a role of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the development of chronic allograft injury. We correlated intrarenal angiotensin-converting enzyme, angiotensin II (Angio II) and transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) expression in 58 biopsies-proven chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) with tissue injury and allograft survival. The biopsies with CAN were graded according to Banff classification as I (22 cases), II (17) and III (19); 27 biopsies also showed a mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate in scarred areas. There were increased expression of angiotensin converting-enzyme (ACE), Angio II and TGFβ1 mainly in tubulointerstitial compartment in the group with CAN; there was no association of Angio II and TGFβ1 expression with interstitial fibrosis. There were no significant differences of ACE, Angio II and TGFβ1 expression between the patients treated and untreated with RAS blockade, and with the graft outcome. Interstitial inflammatory infiltrate had positive correlation with interstitial fibrosis and significant impact on graft survival at 8 years. Our study showed in a group of cases with CAN a high percentage of inflammatory infiltrate that correlated with interstitial fibrosis and graft outcome. The chronic inflammatory changes in these cases did not show significant association with local RAS expression.

In order to assess the occurrence and distribution of spores and toxins of Clostridium botulinum types C and D in three farms in Cocalinho, at the Araguaia River valley, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, we analyzed sediment samples from 40 water holes, soil and cattle feces, collected around water holes. Sediments were analyzed by direct method, whilst feces, soil and also sediment samples were individually analyzed by indirect method. The detection of spores and botulinum toxins in the filtered material was performed by bioassay in Swiss Webster mice strain, as well as the serum-neutralization of the positive materials for typing. Samples of cattle feces showed the largest positive rate for C. botulinum, with 25/40 (62.5%), followed by soil, 12/40 (30%), and by sediment, 13/40 (32.5%). From the 40 cattle feces samples, 25 (62.00%) were positive for Clostridium botulinum; six samples were identified as type C, other six as type D, and 13 samples were classified as CD complex. From the equal number (40) of soil samples, 12 (30%) were positive for C. botulinum; two samples were identified as type C, other three as type D, and seven samples were classified as CD complex. Regarding the 40 sediment samples, 13 (32.5%) were positive for C. botulinum; two samples were identified as type C, other three as type D, and eight samples were classified as CD complex. No botulism toxin was detected by indirect method.

The work completed on the use of para-didactic texts do not address the issue of education in a state that considers the presence of students with visual impairments. Therefore, this article discusses an innovative situation, investigating if the use of para-didactic texts provide the necessary conditions for the inclusion of students with visual impairment in physics education classes. The response indicates a discreet participation of these students, however a significant one, in this application the students were motivated and interested in all of the topics discussed. This prudent participation may have occurred for reasons such as shyness and the behavior of teachers, as they tended to to be more talkative to these students.

Gonadal maturation of cobia, Rachycentron canadum, was evaluated by examining 508 specimens from its recreational fishery. Specimens were collected off southeast Louisiana to northwest Florida by hook-and-line during February through October 1987-1991. Fork lengths (FL) of these fish ranged from 580-1,530 mm, with corresponding weights of 2.0-43.5 kg. The female:male ratio was 1:0.37. Using a combination of oocyte size frequency and histological assessment of many of the fish, we determined that females were ripe from May through September, with atretic oocytes occurring in some fish from July through October. Degenerating hydrated oocytes in July and October and the presence of resting ovaries in July suggest two major spawning periods; however, monthly gonosomatic indices peaking in May, followed by a steady decline, do not support that finding. Ovaries were placed into undeveloped, early developing, mid-developing, or late developing categories based upon oocyte size-frequency distributions. Developing ovaries had two or three modes of oocytes larger than 30 μm. Batch fecundity was estimated to be 2.6×106 - 1.91×108 oocytes, depending on the size of fish/ovaries. The smallest female with oocytes exhibiting vitellogenesis was 834 mm FL. This fish was 2 years old based its otolith evaluation. The smallest male with an abundance of spermatozoa in its testes was 640 mm FL and 1 year old based on otolith evaluation; smaller males were not examined. Females larger than 840 mm FL had vitellogenic oocytes in March and April. A few fish still had vitellogenic oocytes in early October, but none did by late October. When Gilson’s fluid was used to assess ovarian tissue, the fresh weight of the tissue was reduced by 20% after being stored for 3 months. The diameter of oocytes shrunk about 25% in Gilson’s fluid which was 11% less than those fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin, and sectioned. Tissue sections from specific individuals, each demonstrating a variety of different developmental stages, were similar regardless of whether they were obtained from the anterior, middle, or posterior portion of either ovary.

Liz Bryan begins her book with a description of the Canadian Plains:" . .. a voluptuous landscape of hills and valleys and plains, of lakes and tiny twinkling potholes, of flower-filled coulees and vast sand dunes." Her emphasis throughout on the landscape of southern Saskatchewan and Alberta is necessary since the ancient monuments she describes only truly resonate within this setting. Indeed, almost every page of this attractive book is adorned with at least two color images-of scenery, stone features, artifacts, and aboriginal events. She then proceeds to an eclectic overview of the archaeological record of the Plains of Saskatchewan and Alberta, including the earliest human evidence, such as the Clovis points from the Wally's Beach site, Alberta, where the trackways of mammoths, camels, and muskoxen were miraculously and briefly exposed in the late 1990s. There is one perplexing error, however-the attribution of the extinction of the ice age bestiary, about 12,000 years ago, to the meteorite that felled the dinosaurs!
