We present a novel scheme where Dirac neutrinos are realized even if lepton number violating Majorana mass terms are present. The setup is the Randall-Sundrum framework with bulk right-handed neutrinos. Bulk mass terms of both Majorana and Dirac type are considered. It is shown that massless zero mode solutions exist when the bulk Dirac mass term is set to zero. In this limit, it is found that the effective 4D small neutrino mass is primarily of Dirac nature, with the Majorana-type contributions being negligible. Interestingly, this scenario is very similar to the one known with flat extra dimensions. Neutrino phenomenology is discussed by fitting both charged lepton masses and neutrino masses simultaneously. A single Higgs localized on the IR brane is highly constrained, as unnaturally large Yukawa couplings are required to fit charged lepton masses. A simple extension with two Higgs doublets is presented, which facilitates a proper fit for the lepton masses.

ZnAl2O4:Dy3+ (1-9 mol%) nanophosphors were synthesized by a simple, cost effective and environmental friendly route using Euphorbia tirucalli plant latex. The structural properties and morphological features of the phosphors were well studied by PXRD, FTIR, SEM and TEM measurements. The luminescent properties of ZnAl2O4:Dy3+ (1-9 mol%) nanophosphors were investigated from the excitation and emission spectra. The phosphor performance was evaluated by color co-ordinates. The values were well located in the near white region as a result it was highly useful for the fabrication of green component in WLEDs. The average particle size was found to be similar to 9-18 nm and same was confirmed by TEM and Scherrer's method. The highest photoluminescence (PL) and thermoluminescence (TL) intensity was obtained to be similar to 7 mol% Dy3+ concentration. A single TL glow peak was recorded at 172 degrees C at a warming rate of 2.5 degrees Cs (1). The intensity at 172 degrees C peak increases linearly up to 1 kGy and after that it diminishes. PL intensity was studied with different plant latex concentration (2-8 ml) and highest PL intensity was recorded for similar to 8 ml. The optimized phosphor showed good reusability, low fading and wide range of linearity with gamma-dose hence the phosphor was quite useful in radiation dosimetry. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Fluorescence microscopy has become an indispensable tool in cell biology research due its exceptional specificity and ability to visualize subcellular structures with high contrast. It has highest impact when applied in 4D mode, i.e. when applied to record 3D image information as a function of time, since it allows the study of dynamic cellular processes in their native environment. The main issue in 4D fluorescence microscopy is that the phototoxic effect of fluorescence excitation gets accumulated during 4D image acquisition to the extent that normal cell functions are altered. Hence to avoid the alteration of normal cell functioning, it is required to minimize the excitation dose used for individual 2D images constituting a 4D image. Consequently, the noise level becomes very high degrading the resolution. According to the current status of technology, there is a minimum required excitation dose to ensure a resolution that is adequate for biological investigations. This minimum is sufficient to damage light-sensitive cells such as yeast if 4D imaging is performed for an extended period of time, for example, imaging for a complete cell cycle. Nevertheless, our recently developed deconvolution method resolves this conflict forming an enabling technology for visualization of dynamical processes of light-sensitive cells for durations longer than ever without perturbing normal cell functioning. The main goal of this article is to emphasize that there are still possibilities for enabling newer kinds of experiment in cell biology research involving even longer 4D imaging, by only improving deconvolution methods without any new optical technologies.

Undoped and Tb3+ (1-10 mol%) doped CeO2 nanophosphors were synthesized by low temperature solution combustion method. The combustion derived products were well studied by Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) characterizations. The thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of CeO2: Tb3+ (1-10 mol%) nanophosphors exposed to c source (60Co) for various doses were discussed for the first time. Two TL glow peaks recorded at 182 and 262 degrees C respectively. The TL intensity at 262 degrees C peak increases linearly in the dose range 0.5-7 kGy. Further, this peak was well defined, intense and glow peak structure does not change with c-dose as a result, it was quite useful in TL dosimetry of ionizing radiations. The kinetic parameters associated with the glow peak were estimated using Chen's half width method. The photoluminescence emission (PLE) spectra consists of characteristic peaks at 544 and 655 nm which were attributed to D-5(4) -> F-7(5) and D-5(4) -> F-7(2) transitions of Tb3+ ions. The optimal concentration of Tb3+ ions was found to be 7 mol%. The color co-ordinates of CeO2: Tb3+ (1-10 mol%) located in green region. Hence, this phosphor was quite useful for display applications. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

A simple and efficient protocol for the synthesis of novel 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylpiperidin-4-one oxime esters 4(a-q) is described. Initially, p-anisaldehyde 1 was condensed (Mannich reaction) with acetone and ammonium acetate trihydrate afforded 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)piperidin-4-one 2. Then, methylation followed by oximation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH(2)OHa (TM) HCl) furnished a key scaffold 4. Further, to explore the enhanced biological properties of the piperidin-4-one core i.e. the key scaffold 4 was conjugated with substituted benzoyl chlorides in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3 as base to obtain novel 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylpiperidin-4-one oxime esters 4(a-q) in excellent yields. The newly synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and mass spectroscopic techniques, and screened for their in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Most of the compounds exerted positive efficacy towards the biological assays performed. Among the synthesized analogues, compounds 4l and 4m exhibited promising antioxidant activity and on the other hand compounds 4b and 4d manifested persuasive antibacterial activity, whereas compound 4b displayed stupendous antifungal activity against A. flavus strain.

The origin of a high Neel temperature in a 5d oxide, NaOsO3, has been analyzed within the mean-field limit of a multiband Hubbard model and compared with the analogous 4d oxide, SrTcO3. Our analysis shows that there are a lot of similarities in both of these oxides on the dependence of the effective exchange interaction strength (J(0)) on the electron-electron interaction strength ( U). However, the relevant value of U in each system puts them in different portions of the parameter space. Although the Neel temperature for NaOsO3 is less than that for SrTcO3, our results suggest that there could be examples among other 5d oxides that have a higher Neel temperature. We have also examined the stability of the G-type antiferromagnetic state found in NaOsO3 as a function of electron doping within GGA + U calculations and find a robust G-type antiferromagnetic metallic state stabilized. The most surprising aspect of the doped results is the rigid bandlike evolution of the electronic structure, which indicates that the magnetism in NaOsO3 is not driven by Fermi surface nesting.

Rod like structures of hexagonal Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ and cubic Y2O3:Ni2+ phosphors have been successfully synthesized by solvothermal method. X-ray diffraction studies of as-formed product shows hexagonal phase, whereas the product heat treated at 700 degrees C shows pure cubic phase. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ show hexagonal rods while Y2O3:Ni2+ rods were found to consist of many nanoparticles stacked together forming multi-particle-chains. EPR studies suggest that the site symmetry around Ni2+ ions is predominantly octahedral. PL spectra show emission in blue, green and red regions due to the T-3(1)(P-3)->(3)A(2)(F-3), T-1(2)(D-1)->(3)A(2)(F-3) and T-1(2)(D-1)-> T-3(2)(F-3) transitions of Ni2+ ions, respectively. TL studies were carried out for Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ and Y2O3:Ni2+ phosphor upon gamma-dose for 1-6 kGy. A single well resolved glow peaks at 195 and 230 degrees C were recorded for Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ and Y2O3:Ni2+, respectively. The glow peak intensity increases linearly up to 4 kGy and 5 kGy for Y(OH)(3):Ni2+ and Y2O3:Ni2+, respectively. The kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E), frequency factor (s) and order of kinetics (b) were estimated by different methods. The phosphor follows simple glow peak structure, linear response with gamma dose, low fading and simple trap distribution, suggesting that it is quite suitable for radiation dosimetry. Combustion synthesized tetragonal ZrO2: Eu3+ nanophosphors: Structural and photoluminescence studies
Resumo:
Novel crystalline tetragonal ZrO2: Eu3+ phosphors were prepared by a facile and efficient low temperature solution combustion method at 400 +/- 10 degrees C using oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) as fuel. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns and Rietveld confinement of as formed ZrO2: Eu3+ (1-11 mol%) confirmed the presence of body centered tetragonal phase. The crystallite size estimated from Scherrer's and W-H plots was found to be in the range of 7-17 nm. These results were in good agreement with transmission electron microscopy studies. The calculated microstrain in most of the planes indicated the presence of tensile stress along various planes of the particles. The observed space group (P4(2)/nmc) revealed the presence of cations in the 2b positions (0.75, 0.25, 0.25) and the anions in the 4d positions (0.25, 0.25, 0.45). The optical band gap energies estimated from Wood and Tauc's relation was found to be in the range 4.3-4.7 eV. Photoluminescence (PL) emission was recorded under 394 and 464 nm excitation shows an intense emission peak at 605 nm along with other emission peaks at 537, 592, 605 and 713 nm. These emission peaks were attributed to the transition of D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3) of Eu3+ ions. The high ratio of Intensity of (D-5(0) -> F-7(2)) and (D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) infers that Eu3+ occupies sites with a low symmetry and without an inversion center. CIE color coordinates indicated the red regions which could meet the needs of illumination devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electronic structure of SrBi2Ta2O9 and related oxides such as SrBi2Nb2O9, Bi2WO6 and Bi3Ti4O12 have been calculated by the tight-binding method. In each case, the band gap is about 4.1 eV and the band edge states occur on the Bi-O layers and consist of mixed O p/Bi s states at the top of the valence band and Bi p states at the bottom of the conduction band. The main difference between the compounds is that Nb 5d and Ti 4d states in the Nb and Ti compounds lie lower than the Ta 6d states in the conduction band. The surface pinning levels are found to pin Schottky barriers 0.8 eV below the conduction band edge.

Gadolinium oxide thin films have been prepared on silicon (100) substrates with a low-energy dual ion-beam epitaxial technique. Substrate temperature was an important factor to affect the crystal structures and textures in an ion energy range of 100-500 eV. The films had a monoclinic Gd2O3 structure with preferred orientation ((4) over bar 02) at low substrate temperatures. When the substrate temperature was increased, the orientation turned to (202), and finally, the cubic structure appeared at the substrate temperature of 700 degreesC, which disagreed with the previous report because of the ion energy. The AES studies found that Gadolinium oxide shared Gd2O3 structures, although there were a lot of oxygen deficiencies in the films, and the XPS results confirmed this. AFM was also used to investigate the surface images of the samples. Finally, the electrical properties were presented. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Spectral data are presented, giving intensities of the Brackett ɤ (B7) line at six positions in M 42 and of the Brackett ten through fourteen (B10-B14) lines plus the He 4d3D-3p3p0 line at three positions in M 42. Observations of the Brackett ɤ line are also given for the planetary nebulae NGC 7027 and IC 418. Brackett gamma is shown to exhibit an anomalous satellite line in NGC 7027. Broadband data are presented, giving intensities at effective wavelengths of 1.25 μ, 1.65 μ, 2.2 μ, 3.5 μ and 4.8 μ for three positions in M 42.
Comparisons with visual and radio data as well as 12 micron and 20 micron data are used to derive reddening, electron temperatures, and electron densities for M 42 and the two planetaries, as well as a helium abundance for M 42. A representative electron temperature of 8400°K ± 1000°K, an electron density of 1.5 ±0.1 x 103 cm-3 and a He/H number density ratio of 0.10 +0.10/-0.05 are derived for the central region of M 42. The electron temperature is found to increase slightly with distance from the Trapezium.
M 42 is shown to emit in excess of the predicted recombination radiation throughout the entire infrared spectrum. The variations in the excess with wavelength and with position are analyzed to determine which of several physical processes may be operating. The longer wavelength infrared excess is shown to be dominated by dust emission, while the shorter wavelength infrared excess is caused by dust scattering. The dust is shown to be larger than the average interstellar particle. A new feature of the Orion red star ORS-1 is found in that it appears to have a reflection nebula around it.

An automatic experimental apparatus for perturbed angular correlation measurements, capable of incorporating Ge(Li) detectors as well as scintillation counters, has been constructed.
The gamma-gamma perturbed angular correlation technique has been used to measure magnetic dipole moments of several nuclear excited states in the osmium transition region. In addition, the hyperfine magnetic fields, experienced by nuclei of 'impurity' atoms embedded in ferromagnetic host lattices, have been determined for several '4d' and '5d' impurity atoms.
The following magnetic dipole moments were obtained in the osmium transition region μ2+(190Os) = 0.54 ± 0.06 nm μ4+(190Os) = 0.88 ± 0.48 nm μ2+(192Os) = 0.56 ± 0.08 nm μ2+(192Pt) = 0.56 ± 0.06 nm μ2+’(192Pt) = 0.62 ± 0.14 nm.
These results are discussed in terms of three collective nuclear models; the cranking model, the rotation-vibration model and the pairing-plus-quadrupole model. The measurements are found to be in satisfactory agreement with collective descriptions of low lying nuclear states in this region.
The following hyperfine magnetic fields of 'impurities' in ferromagnetic hosts were determined; Hint(Cd Ni) = - (64.0 ± 0.8)kG Hint(Hg Fe) = - (440 ± 105)kG Hint(Hg Co) = - (370 ± 78)kG Hint(Hg Ni) = - (86 ± 22)kG Hint(Tl Fe) = - (185 ± 70)kG Hint(Tl Co) = - (90 ± 35)kG Hint(Ra Fe) = - (105 ± 20)kG Hint(Ra Co) = - (80 ± 16)kG Hint(Ra Ni) = - (30 ± 10)kG, where in Hint(AB); A is the impurity atom embedded in the host lattice B. No quantitative theory is available for comparison. However, these results are found to obey the general systematics displayed by these fields. Several mechanisms which may be responsible for the appearance of these fields are mentioned.
Finally, a theoretical expression for time-differential perturbed angular correlation measurement, which duplicates experimental conditions is developed and its importance in data analysis is discussed.

Multi-finger caging offers a rigorous and robust approach to robot grasping. This thesis provides several novel algorithms for caging polygons and polyhedra in two and three dimensions. Caging refers to a robotic grasp that does not necessarily immobilize an object, but prevents it from escaping to infinity. The first algorithm considers caging a polygon in two dimensions using two point fingers. The second algorithm extends the first to three dimensions. The third algorithm considers caging a convex polygon in two dimensions using three point fingers, and considers robustness of this cage to variations in the relative positions of the fingers.
This thesis describes an algorithm for finding all two-finger cage formations of planar polygonal objects based on a contact-space formulation. It shows that two-finger cages have several useful properties in contact space. First, the critical points of the cage representation in the hand’s configuration space appear as critical points of the inter-finger distance function in contact space. Second, these critical points can be graphically characterized directly on the object’s boundary. Third, contact space admits a natural rectangular decomposition such that all critical points lie on the rectangle boundaries, and the sublevel sets of contact space and free space are topologically equivalent. These properties lead to a caging graph that can be readily constructed in contact space. Starting from a desired immobilizing grasp of a polygonal object, the caging graph is searched for the minimal, intermediate, and maximal caging regions surrounding the immobilizing grasp. An example constructed from real-world data illustrates and validates the method.
A second algorithm is developed for finding caging formations of a 3D polyhedron for two point fingers using a lower dimensional contact-space formulation. Results from the two-dimensional algorithm are extended to three dimension. Critical points of the inter-finger distance function are shown to be identical to the critical points of the cage. A decomposition of contact space into 4D regions having useful properties is demonstrated. A geometric analysis of the critical points of the inter-finger distance function results in a catalog of grasps in which the cages change topology, leading to a simple test to classify critical points. With these properties established, the search algorithm from the two-dimensional case may be applied to the three-dimensional problem. An implemented example demonstrates the method.
This thesis also presents a study of cages of convex polygonal objects using three point fingers. It considers a three-parameter model of the relative position of the fingers, which gives complete generality for three point fingers in the plane. It analyzes robustness of caging grasps to variations in the relative position of the fingers without breaking the cage. Using a simple decomposition of free space around the polygon, we present an algorithm which gives all caging placements of the fingers and a characterization of the robustness of these cages.
