Photocatalytic degradation of estriol (E3) in an aqueous medium was investigated in the presence of TiO2 microcrystallized glass plates. To begin with, transparent glasses associated with the composition 0.4BaO-0.4TiO(2)-B2O3 (BTBO) were fabricated by the conventional melt-quench technique and subsequently subjected to controlled heat treatment at an appropriate temperature to grow anatase TiO2 microcrystals in the glass matrix. The fabricated samples were subjected to differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to obtain thermal, structural and microstructural details. The photocatalytic activity of glass samples for estriol degradation was monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. The limit of detection for estriol using fluorescence spectroscopy was analyzed. The results showed that microcrystallized TiO2 glass composites have more photocatalytic activity than as quenched glass. The degradation rate coefficient of microcrystallized TiO2 glass composite (334.54 min(-1) m(-2)) was found to be ten times larger than that of the as-quenched BTBO glasses (37.74 min(-1) m(-2)) implying that the anatase phase of TiO2 in BTBO glasses was responsible for high photocatalytic activity of estriol degradation. Actions of transforming growth factor-beta are largely context dependent. For instance, TGF-beta is growth inhibitory to epithelial cells and many tumor cell-lines while it stimulates the growth of mesenchymal cells. TGF-beta also activates fibroblast cells to a myofibroblastic phenotype. In order to understand how the responsiveness of fibroblasts to TGF-beta would change in the context of transformation, we have compared the differential gene regulation by TGF-beta in immortal fibroblasts (hFhTERT), transformed fibroblasts (hFhTERT-LTgRAS) and a human fibrosarcoma cell-line (HT1080). The analysis revealed regulation of 6735, 4163, and 3478 probe-sets by TGF-beta in hFhTERT, hFhTERT-LTgRAS and HT1080 cells respectively. Intriguingly, 5291 probe-sets were found to be either regulated in hFhTERT or hFhTERT-LTgRAS cells while 2274 probe-sets were regulated either in hFhTERT or HT1080 cells suggesting that the response of immortal hFhTERT cells to TGF-beta is vastly different compared to the response of both the transformed cells hFhTERT-LTgRAS and HT1080 to TGF-beta. Strikingly, WNT pathway showed enrichment in the hFhTERT cells in Gene Set Enrichment Analysis. Functional studies showed induction of WNT4 by TGF-beta in hFhTERT cells and TGF-beta conferred action of these cells was mediated by WNT4. While TGF-beta activated both canonical and non-canonical WNT pathways in hFhTERT cells, Erk1/2 and p38 Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase pathways were activated in hFhTERT-LTgRAS and HT1080 cells. This suggests that transformation of immortal hFhTERT cells by SV40 large T antigen and activated RAS caused a switch in their response to TGF-beta which matched with the response of HT1080 cells to TGF-beta. These data suggest context dependent activation of non-canonical signaling by TGF-beta. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Fretting is of a serious concern in many industrial components, specifically, in nuclear industry for the safe and reliable operation of various component and/or system. Under fretting condition small amplitude oscillations induce surface degradation in the form of surface cracks and/or surface wear. Comprehensive experimental studies have been carried out simulating different fretting regimes under ambient and vacuum (10(-9) MPa) conditions and, temperature up to 400 degrees C. Studies have been carried out with stainless steel spheres on stainless steel flats, and stainless steel spheres against chromium carbide, with 25% nickel chrome binder coatings. Mechanical responses are correlated with the damage observed. It has been observed that adhesion plays a vital role in material degradation process, and its effectiveness depends on mechanical variables such as normal load, interfacial tangential displacement, characteristics of the contacting bodies and most importantly on the environment conditions. Material degradation mechanism for ductile materials involved severe plastic deformation, which results in the initiation or nucleation of cracks. Ratcheting has been observed as the governing damage mode for crack nucleation under cyclic tangential loading condition. Further, propagation of the cracks has been observed under fatigue and their orientation has been observed to be governed by the contact conditions prevailing at the contact interface. Coated surfaces show damage in the form of brittle fracture and spalling of the coatings. Existence of stick slip has been observed under high normal load and low displacement amplitude. It has also been observed that adhesion at the contact interface and instantaneous cohesive strength of the contacting bodies dictates the occurrence of material transfer. The paper discusses the mechanics and mechanisms involved in fretting damage under controlled environment conditions. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new approach for rapid resonance assignments in proteins based on amino acid selective unlabeling is presented. The method involves choosing a set of multiple amino acid types for selective unlabeling and identifying specific tripeptides surrounding the labeled residues from specific 2D NMR spectra in a combinatorial manner. The methodology directly yields sequence specific assignments, without requiring a contiguously stretch of amino acid residues to be linked, and is applicable to deuterated proteins. We show that a 2D N-15,H-1]HSQC spectrum with two 2D spectra can result in approximate to 50% assignments. The methodology was applied to two proteins: an intrinsically disordered protein (12kDa) and the 29kDa (268 residue) -subunit of Escherichia coli tryptophan synthase, which presents a challenging case with spectral overlaps and missing peaks. The method can augment existing approaches and will be useful for applications such as identifying active-site residues involved in ligand binding, phosphorylation, or protein-protein interactions, even prior to complete resonance assignments.

The mechanical behaviors of 2124, Al-5Cu, Al-Li and 6061 alloys reinforced by silicon carbide particulates, together with 15%SiCw/6061 alloy, were studied under the quasi-static and impact loading conditions, using the split Hopkinson tension/compression bars and Instron universal testing machine. The effect of strain rate on the ultra tensile strength (UTS), the hardening modulus and the failure strain was investigated. At the same time, the SEM observations of dynamic fracture surfaces of various MMC materials showed some distinguished microstructures and patterns. Some new characteristics of asymmetry of mechanical behaviors of MMCs under tension and compression loading were also presented and explained in details, and they could be considered as marks to indicate, to some degree, the mechanism of controlling damage and failure of MMCs under impact loading. The development of new constitutive laws about MMCs under impact loading should benefit from these experimental results and theoretical analysis.

Investigations on the aging hardening behavior of four Al-Li-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys were carried out using differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy and hardness measurement. It is shown that the addition of Li inhibits the formation of Zn-rich G.P. zones in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys. The dominant aging hardening precipitates is delta'(Al3Li) phase. Coarse T ((AlZn)(49)Mg-32) phase, instead of MgZn2, precipitates primarily on grain boundaries, and provides little strengthening. The multi-stop aging involving plastic deformation introduces in the matrix a high concentration of structural defects. These defects play different role on the nucleation of Zn-rich G.P. zones in different alloys. For the Li free alloy, structural defects act as vacancy sinks and tend to suppress the homogeneous precipitation of G.P. zones, while for the Li containing alloys, these defects promote the heterogeneous nucleation of G.P. zones and metastable MgZn2. A significant aging hardening effect is attained in deformed Li containing alloys due to the extra precipitation of fine MgZn2 in the matrix combined with deformation hardening.

Rossby waves are the most important waves in the atmosphere and ocean, and are parts of a large-scale system in fluid. The theory and observation show that, they satisfy quasi-geostrophic and quasi-static equilibrium approximations. In this paper, solitary Rossby waves induced by linear topography in barotropic fluids with a shear flow are studied. In order to simplify the problem, the topography is taken as a linear function of latitude variable y, then employing a weakly nonlinear method and a perturbation method, a KdV (Korteweg-de Vries) equation describing evolution of the amplitude of solitary Rossby waves induced by linear topography is derived. The results show that the variation of linear topography can induce the solitary Rossby waves in barotropic fluids with a shear flow, and extend the classical geophysical theory of fluid dynamics.

An embedded cell model is presented to obtain the effective elastic moduli for three-dimensional two-phase composites which is an exact analytic formula without any simplified approximation and can be expressed in an explicit form. For the different cells such as spherical inclusions and cracks surrounded by sphere and oblate ellipsoidal matrix, the effective elastic moduli are evaluated and the results are compared with those from various micromechanics models. These results show that the present model is direct, simple and efficient to deal with three-dimensional tyro-phase composites.
