Organically modified silica xerogels (OMSX) and Eu3+ (Tb3+)-doped OMSX were prepared by the reaction of (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) with 3-isocyanatepropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES) followed by the subsequent hydrolysis and condensation in the presence of Eu3+ (Tb3+) via sol-gel method, which were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, fluorescence excitation and emission spectra. The as-formed OMSX shows a strong blue emission with the maximum excitation and emission wavelength at 351 and 420 nm, respectively. Due to the spectral overlap between the emission band of OMSX and f-f absorption lines of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in the UV-blue region, an energy transfer was observed from OMSX host to Eu3+ and Tb3+ in OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+, respectively. Excitation at 350-360 nm resulted in a very weak emission around 420 nm from OMSX host and strong emission of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+, respectively. The emission spectra of Eu3+ and Tb3+ consist of D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6, 5, 4, 3), respectively. Furthermore, the predicted structure of OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+ is presented.

Novel hybrid thin films covalently doped with Eu3+ (Tb3+) have been prepared via direct routes involving co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and phen-Si in the presence of Eu3+ (Tb3+) by spin-casting and their luminescence properties have been investigated in detail. Lanthanide ions can be sensitized by anchored phenanthroline in hybrid thin films. Excitation at the ligand absorption wavelength (272 nm) resulted in the strong emission of the lanthanide ions i.e. Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4) emission lines and Tb3+ D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) due to the energy transfer from the ligands to the lanthanide ions.

A new polymer-supported metallocene catalyst has been prepared, The polymer-supported metallocene displayed considerably high activity in ethylene polymerization, the highest being 3.62x10(7) gPE/molZr.h, the molecular weight of the polyethylene produced was Mn = 1.29x10(5). about 3-4 times those of corresponding homogeneous zirconocenes. The polymer-supported metallocene keeps the characteristics of homogeneous metallocene catalysts, and offers some features, such as adaptable to gas phase and slurry processes: easy to prepare in low cost: relatively high activity and lower MAO/Zr ratio; lower inorganic residues in the polyolefins as compared to cases of SiO2, Al2O3 or MgCl2; unitary active structure, no complex surface as with SiO2; good control of morphology of the resulting polymer.

Human acute-phase serum amyloid A protein (A-SAA) is a major acute phase reactant, the concentration of which increases dramatically as part of the body's early response to inflammation. A-SAA is the product of two almost identical genes, SAA1 and SAA2, which are induced by the pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-1 and IL-6. In this study, we examine the roles played by the 5'- and 3'-untranslated regions (UTRs) of the SAA2 mRNA in regulating A-SAA2 expression. SAA2 promoter-driven luciferase reporter gene constructs carrying the SAA2 5'-UTR and/or 3'-UTR were transiently transfected into the HepG2 human hepatoma cell line. After induction of chimeric mRNA with IL-1beta and IL-6, the SAA2 5'- and 3'-UTRs were both able to posttranscriptionally modify the expression of the luciferase reporter. The SAA2 5'-UTR promotes efficient translation of the chimeric luciferase transcripts, whereas the SAA2 3'-UTR shares this property and also significantly accelerates the rate of reporter mRNA degradation. Our data strongly suggest that the SAA2 5'- and 3'-UTRs each play significant independent roles in the posttranscriptional regulation of A-SAA2 protein synthesis.

The iron oxyallyl carbocation generated from 2,7-dibromocycloheptanone was induced to undergo [4 + 3] cycloaddition reactions with various furans, affording a series of 12-oxatricyclo-[4.4.1.1(2,5)]-dodec-3-en-11-one adducts. Similar methodology was used to prepare two additional cycloadducts using menthofuran and two homologous aliphatic dibromoketones. Dipolar cycloaddition of ozone to the adducts afforded the corresponding secondary ozonides (i.e., 1,2,4-trioxolanes) in variable yields. Ozonides were investigated by quantum mechanics at the B3LYP/6-31+G* level to study structural features including close contacts which may be responsible for enhancing ozonide stability. The effect of these ozonides and their corresponding precursor cycloadducts upon radicle growth of both Sorghum bicolor and Cucumis sativus was evaluated at 5.0 x 10(-4) mol L-1. The most active cycloadducts and ozonides were also evaluated against the weed species Ipomoea grandifolia and Brachiaria decumbens, and the results are discussed. Compared to ozonides previously synthesized in our laboratory, the new ozonides described herein present improved plant growth regulatory activity.

The tridentate Schiff base ligand, 7-amino-4-methyl-5-aza-3-hepten-2-one (HAMAH), prepared by the mono-condensation of 1,2diaminoethane and acetylacetone, reacts with Cu(BF4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to produce initially a dinuclear Cu(II) complex, [{Cu(AMAH)}(2) (mu-4,4'-bipyJ](BF4)(2) (1) which undergoes hydrolysis in the reaction mixture and finally produces a linear polymeric chain compound, [Cu(acac)(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)](n) (2). The geometry around the copper atom in compound 1 is distorted square planar while that in compound 2 is essentially an elongated octahedron. On the other hand, the ligand HAMAH reacts with Cu(ClO4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to yield a polymeric zigzag chain, [{Cu(acac)(CH3OH)(mu-4,4'-bipy)}(ClO4)](n) (3). The geometry of the copper atom in 3 is square pyramidal with the two bipyridine molecules in the cis equatorial positions. All three complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. A probable explanation for the different size and shape of the reported polynuclear complexes formed by copper(II) and 4,4'-bipyridine has been put forward by taking into account the denticity and crystal field strength of the blocking ligand as well as the Jahn-Teller effect in copper(II). Three heterometallic trinuclear Schiff base complexes, [{GuL(1)(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)]center dot 4H(2)O (1), [{CuL2(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)] (2), and [{CuL3(H2O)}(2)Ni(CN)(4)] (3) (HL1 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-methylamino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL3 = 7-dimethylamino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one), were synthesized. All three complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV spectroscopies, and thermal analysis. Two of them (1 and 3) were also characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 forms a hydrogen-bonded one-dimensional metal-organic framework that stabilizes a helical water chain into its cavity, but when any of the amine hydrogen atoms of the Schiff base are replaced by methyl groups, as in L 2 and L 3, the water chain, vanishes, showing explicitly the importance of the host-guest H-bonding interactions for the stabilization of a water cluster.

Four new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](CIO4)(2) (2), [(CuL3)(3)-(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(4)center dot H2O (3), and [(CuL4)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (4), where HL1 = 8-amino-4,7,7-trimethyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL3 = 7(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL4 = 4-methyl-7-(methylamino)-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, have been derived from the four tridentate Schiff bases (HL1, HL2, HL3, and HL4) and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. For all compounds, the cationic part is trinuclear with a CU3OH core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The copper atoms are five-coordinate with a distorted square-pyramidal geometry; the equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen atom of the central OH group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from one ligand whereas an oxygen atom of a second ligand occupies the axial position. Magnetic measurements have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2+S2S3+S1S3) yielding as best-fit parameters: J = -66.7 and g = 2.19 for 1, J = -36.6 and g = 2.20 for 2, J = -24.5 and g = 2.20 for 3, and J = -14.9 and g = 2.05 for 4. EPR spectra at low temperature show the existence of spin frustration in complexes 3 and 4, but it has not been possible to carry out calculations of the antisymmetric exchange parameter, G, from magnetic data. In frozen methanolic solution, at 4 K, hyperfine splitting in all complexes and spin frustration in complex 4 seem to be confirmed. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We have performed a systematic study of the time and temperature dependencies of the electrical resistivity (rho(T, t)) inNd(0.5)Ca(0.5)Mn(1-x)Cr(x)O(3) single crystals with x = 0.02 and 0.07 in order to examine the dynamics of the phase separation. The relaxation effects can be described by the combination of a rapid exponential increase/decrease with a slower logarithmic contribution at longer times. The experimental results suggest the existence of a large temperature window in which huge relaxation effects occur, and the relative fraction of the coexisting phases rapidly changes as a function of time, depending on the initial magnetic state of the sample. The rho(T, t) relaxation measurements were shown to be a suitable tool for probing the dynamical nature of the phase separation, in which magnetically distinct phases compete against each other in a wide temperature range. In addition, the features observed in the rho(T, t) curves were found to be in excellent agreement with both the magnetic properties and the structural transitions observed in these manganites.
