Purpose: This systematic review examines what is known about injuries in strength training. Methods: A systematic search was performed in PubMed and SportDiscus. Studies were included if they examined powerlifters, weightlifters, strongman athletes, bodybuilding athletes, individuals who undertook recreational weight training or weight training to complement athletic performance. Exposure variables were incidence, severity and body part injury. Results: After examining 1214 titles and abstracts, 62 articles were identified as potentially relevant. Finally, 11 were included in this systematic review. Conflicting results were reported on the relationships between injury definition and incidence or severity recorded. The lower back followed by the shoulder and knee are the most frequently affected areas in strength sports. Conclusion: Strength training is safe. However, the variety of injury definitions has makes it difficult to compare different studies in this field. New styles of reporting injuries have appeared, and could make increases these ratios. If methodological limitations in measuring incidence rate and severity injuries can be resolved, more work can be conducted to define the real incidence rate, compare it with others sports, and explore cause and effect relationships in randomized controlled trials. An evaluation of the performance of cDNA microarrays for detecting changes in global mRNA expression

The cDNA microarray is one technological approach that has the potential to accurately measure changes in global mRNA expression levels. We report an assessment of an optimized cDNA microarray platform to generate accurate, precise and reliable data consistent with the objective of using microarrays as an acquisition platform to populate gene expression databases. The study design consisted of two independent evaluations with 70 arrays from two different manufactured lots and used three human tissue sources as samples: placenta, brain and heart. Overall signal response was linear over three orders of magnitude and the sensitivity for any element was estimated to be 2 pg mRNA. The calculated coefficient of variation for differential expression for all non-differentiated elements was 12–14% across the entire signal range and did not vary with array batch or tissue source. The minimum detectable fold change for differential expression was 1.4. Accuracy, in terms of bias (observed minus expected differential expression ratio), was less than 1 part in 10 000 for all non-differentiated elements. The results presented in this report demonstrate the reproducible performance of the cDNA microarray technology platform and the methods provide a useful framework for evaluating other technologies that monitor changes in global mRNA expression.

La enseñanza y el aprendizaje constituyen dos piezas claves dentro del proceso de formación de los estudiantes. El fin es lograr una formación integral que les permita un desempeño adecuado de su carrera profesional, de forma que adquieran nuevos conocimientos, siendo capaces de encontrar por sí mismos soluciones. El papel del tutor/a como guía y orientación al estudiante puede jugar un papel fundamental en este proceso. Dentro de este marco, la Universidad de Alicante creó hace siete años el Programa de Acción Tutorial, con el propósito, entre otros, de proporcionar al alumnado orientación y apoyo en su desarrollo académico, personal y profesional. El objetivo de este trabajo es contrastar, entre otras, la utilidad de la figura del tutor en el desarrollo académico del alumno. Para ello hemos realizado una encuesta a los estudiantes de la Diplomatura de Empresariales que participan este curso académico en este programa. Los resultados muestran que los alumnos valoran más la ayuda del tutor en aspectos relacionados con los exámenes, el asesoramiento sobre las tutorías con sus profesores, las cuestiones de la biblioteca y las prácticas en empresas. Encontramos que esa valoración es mayor cuando tutor y alumno ya se conocen de cursos previos.

O Estágio Pedagógico assumiu-se como um marco de extrema relevância, no processo da formação docente, por possibilitar a aplicação dos conteúdos teóricos em contexto real de ensino. O presente relatório teve por objetivos, a reportagem e a reflexão das experiências vivenciadas nas quatro áreas de intervenção: (1) a prática letiva; (2) as atividades de integração no meio; (3) a atividade de intervenção na comunidade escolar; (4) as atividades de natureza científico-pedagógica. O Estágio Pedagógico teve lugar na Escola Básica e Secundária Gonçalves Zarco no ano letivo de 2012/2013. A prática letiva teve por base uma metodologia assente no diagnóstico, prescrição e controlo, na gestão do processo de ensino/aprendizagem de uma turma do 7ºano. O processo de assistência às aulas foi fundamental no desenvolvimento de um conjunto de competências, decorrentes do contexto real de ensino, que permitiram melhorar a intervenção pedagógica. As atividades de intervenção no meio foram constituídas pelas atividades de direção de turma (Caraterização da Turma e Estudo de Caso), que possibilitaram um conhecimento aprofundado da turma, e pela atividade de extensão curricular que permitiu potenciar a relação entre os diversos agentes intervenientes no contexto de turma, através da exploração de temáticas como a interdisciplinaridade e o combate ao desemprego. A atividade de intervenção na comunidade escolar possibilitou a criação de contextos de prática de atividade física, para toda a comunidade educativa, assumindo um papel de destaque na promoção de estilos de vida saudáveis e no combate ao Sedentarismo. Os Jogos Desportivos Coletivos constituíram-se como a temática de base na discussão inerente às ações de natureza científico-pedagógica, tanto ao nível da sua abordagem metodológica (individual), como ao nível da avaliação em contexto escolar (coletiva). Os desafios decorrentes destas atividades solicitaram a nossa capacidade de gestão e adaptação, fazendo do Estágio Pedagógico, um momento de extrema importância na nossa formação.

A statistical functional, such as the mean or the median, is called elicitable if there is a scoring function or loss function such that the correct forecast of the functional is the unique minimizer of the expected score. Such scoring functions are called strictly consistent for the functional. The elicitability of a functional opens the possibility to compare competing forecasts and to rank them in terms of their realized scores. In this paper, we explore the notion of elicitability for multi-dimensional functionals and give both necessary and sufficient conditions for strictly consistent scoring functions. We cover the case of functionals with elicitable components, but we also show that one-dimensional functionals that are not elicitable can be a component of a higher order elicitable functional. In the case of the variance, this is a known result. However, an important result of this paper is that spectral risk measures with a spectral measure with finite support are jointly elicitable if one adds the “correct” quantiles. A direct consequence of applied interest is that the pair (Value at Risk, Expected Shortfall) is jointly elicitable under mild conditions that are usually fulfilled in risk management applications.

Upper Berriasian to lower Aptian calcareous nannofossil assemblages have been studied from a siliciclastic deep-sea fan complex and a subjacent limestone sequence drilled beneath the lower continental rise in the western North American Basin, 270 miles (435 km) off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (USA). Sharp lithologic facies changes and reworking by turbidites complicate the biostratigraphic interpretation, but provide an excellent opportunity to better distinguish "nearshore" from open-ocean nannofossil species, and to investigate the introduction of neritic taxa into the deep-see environment, a phenomenon that appears to have been widespread within the circum-North Atlantic during Neocomian times. Well-preserved assemblages in dark, carbonaceous claystones were probably displaced from the oxygen minimum zone along the upper slope or outer shelf. Neritic, continental margin species prevalent in this facies include the holococcolith Zebrashapka vanhintei n. gen., n. sp., Lithraphidites alatus magnus n. spp., Pickelhaube furtiva n. gen., and a host of nannoconids and micrantholiths. A qualitative evaluation of widely used guide fossils suggests that the triad of proposed markers for the base of Roth's Zone NC3 make their first appearances in the following (ascending) order: Diadorhombus rectus, TUbodiscus verenae, Calcicalathina oblongata. Of these, we chose the nominative species for the zone, T. verenae, to mark its base and to approximate the Berriasian/Valangian boundary. Cyclagelosphaera deflandrei is strongly affected by diagenesis and is therefore not a reliable index species for the base of Zone NC4 near the Valanginian/Hauterivian boundary (the last occurrence of T. verenae is also not suitable there). In addition, Lithraphidites bollii, a form apparently confined to the low latitudes of the Tethyan region, was absent at the more temperate Site 603 and not available as a subzonal marker for the upper Hautervian-lower Barremian (mid-NC4 and mid-NC5, respectively). Cruciellipsis cuvillieri, however, provides a reliable datum just below the Hauterivian/Barremian boundary (base of NC5), despite the potential for reworking in this section. Nannoconids tend to be reworked in this section, and do not provide trustworthy forms to mark the Barremian/Aptian boundary (base of NC6). Hayesites irregularis n. comb, probably does provide a useful first appearance datum within the lower Aptian, if it is not confused with a more birefringent and globular form, Rucinolithus terebrodentarius n. sp. Rhagodiscus angustus is mimicked by a similar form (Zeughrabdotusl pseudoangustus n. sp.), which apparently ranges down to the Hauterivian, thus Lithastrinus floralis provides a more useful first appearance datum for the base of the middle-upper Aptian Rhagodiscus angustus Zone (NC7). Aside from the new taxa mentioned above, the following are also described: Cretarhabdusl delicatus n. sp. and Cyclagelosphaera jiangii n. sp.
