PURPOSE To compare postoperative morphological and rheological conditions after eversion carotid endarterectomy versus conventional carotid endarterectomy using computational fluid dynamics. BASIC METHODS Hemodynamic metrics (velocity, wall shear stress, time-averaged wall shear stress and temporal gradient wall shear stress) in the carotid arteries were simulated in one patient after conventional carotid endarterectomy and one patient after eversion carotid endarterectomy by computational fluid dynamics analysis based on patient specific data. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Systolic peak of the eversion carotid endarterectomy model showed a gradually decreased pressure along the stream path, the conventional carotid endarterectomy model revealed high pressure (about 180 Pa) at the carotid bulb. Regions of low wall shear stress in the conventional carotid endarterectomy model were much larger than that in the eversion carotid endarterectomy model and with lower time-averaged wall shear stress values (conventional carotid endarterectomy: 0.03-5.46 Pa vs. eversion carotid endarterectomy: 0.12-5.22 Pa). CONCLUSIONS Computational fluid dynamics after conventional carotid endarterectomy and eversion carotid endarterectomy disclosed differences in hemodynamic patterns. Larger studies are necessary to assess whether these differences are consistent and might explain different rates of restenosis in both techniques.

This study investigated the effects of seawater pH (i.e., 8.10, 7.85 and 7.60) and temperature (16 and 19 °C) on (a) the abiotic conditions in the fluid surrounding the embryo (viz. the perivitelline fluid), (b) growth, development and (c) cuttlebone calcification of embryonic and juvenile stages of the cephalopod Sepia officinalis. Egg swelling increased in response to acidification or warming, leading to an increase in egg surface while the interactive effects suggested a limited plasticity of the swelling modulation. Embryos experienced elevated pCO2 conditions in the perivitelline fluid (>3-fold higher pCO2 than that of ambient seawater), rendering the medium under-saturated even under ambient conditions. The growth of both embryos and juveniles was unaffected by pH, whereas 45Ca incorporation in cuttlebone increased significantly with decreasing pH at both temperatures. This phenomenon of hypercalcification is limited to only a number of animals but does not guarantee functional performance and calls for better mechanistic understanding of calcification processes.

Dense, CO2-rich fluid inclusions hosted by plagioclases, An45 to An54, of the O.-v.-Gruber- Anorthosite body, central Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica, contain varying amounts of small calcite, paragonite and pyrophyllite crystals detected by Raman microspectroscopy. These crystals are reaction products that have formed during cooling of the host and the original CO2-rich H2O-bearing enclosed fluid. Variable amounts of these reaction products illustrates that the reaction did not take place uniformly in all fluid inclusions, possibly due to differences in kinetics as caused by differences in shape and size, or due to compositional variation in the originally trapped fluid. The reaction albite + 2anorthite + 2H2O + 2CO2 = pyrophyllite + paragonite + 2calcite was thermodynamically modelled with consideration of different original fluid compositions. Although free H2O is not detectable in most fluid inclusions, the occurrence of OH-bearing sheet silicates indicates that the original fluid was not pure CO2, but contained significant amounts of H2O. Compared to an actual fluid inclusion it is obvious, that volume estimations of solid phases can be used as a starting point to reverse the retrograde reaction and recalculate the compositional and volumetrical properties of the original fluid. Isochores for an unmodified inclusion can thus be reconstructed, leading to a more realistic estimation of P-T conditions during earlier metamorphic stages or fluid capturing.

Abstract In this thesis, experimental research focused on passive scalar transport is performed in micro-systems with marked sense of industrial application, using innovative methods in order to obtain better performances optimizing critical design parameters or finding new utilities. Part of the results obtained in these experiments have been published into high impact factor journals belonged to the first quarter of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). First of all the effect of tip clearance in a micro-channel based heat sink is analyzed. Leaving a gap between channels and top cover, letting the channels communicate each other causes three-dimensional effects which improve the heat transfer between fluid and heat sink and also reducing the pressure drop caused by the fluid passing through the micro-channels which has a great impact on the total cooling pumping power needed. It is also analyzed the enhancement produced in terms of dissipated heat in a micro-processor cooling system by improving the predominantly used fin plate with a vapour chamber based heat spreader which contains a two-phase fluid inside. It has also been developed at the same time a numerical model to optimize the new fin plate dimensions compatible with a series of design requirements in which both size and wight plays a very restrictive role. On the other hand, fluid-dynamics phenomena that appears downstream of a bluff body in the bosom of a fluid flow with high blockage ratio has been studied. This research experimentally confirms the existence of an intermediate regime characterized by an oscillating closed recirculation bubble intermediate regime between the steady closed recirculation bubble regime and the vortex shedding regime (Karman street like regime) as a function of the incoming flow Reynolds number. A particle image velocimetry technique (PIV) has been used in order to obtain, analyze and post-process the fluid-dynamic data. Finally and as an addition to the last point, a study on the vortexinduced vibrations (VIV) of a bluff body inside a high blockage ratio channel has been carried out taking advantage of the results obtained with the fixed square prism. The prism moves with simple harmonic motion for a Reynolds number interval and this movement becomes vibrational around its axial axis after overcoming at definite Reynolds number. Regarding the fluid, vortex shedding regime is reached at Reynolds numbers lower than the previous critical ones. Merging both movement spectra and varying the square prism to fluid mass ratio, a map with different global states is reached. This is not only applicable as a mixing enhancement technique but as an energy harvesting method.

We present and validate a test able to provide reliable body sway measurements in air pistol shooting, without the use of a gun. 46 senior male pistol shooters who participated in Spanish air pistol championships participated in the study. Body sway data of two static bipodal balance tests have been compared: during the first test, shooting was simulated by use of a dumbbell, while during the second test the shooters own pistol was used. Both tests were performed the day previous to the competition, during the official training time and at the training stands to simulate competition conditions. The participants performance was determined as the total score of 60 shots at competition. Apart from the commonly used variables that refer to movements of the shooters centre of pressure (COP), such as COP displacements on the X and Y axes, maximum and average COP velocities and total COP area, the present analysis also included variables that provide information regarding the axes of the COP ellipse (length and angle in respect to X). A strong statistically significant correlation between the two tests was found (with an interclass correlation varying between 0.59 and 0.92). A statistically significant inverse linear correlation was also found between performance and COP movements. The study concludes that dumbbell tests are perfectly valid for measuring body sway by simulating pistol shooting.

The present paper describes the preliminary stages of the development of a new, comprehensive model conceived to simulate the evacuation of transport airplanes in certification studies. Two previous steps were devoted to implementing an efficient procedure to define the whole geometry of the cabin, and setting up an algorithm for assigning seats to available exits. Now, to clarify the role of the cabin arrangement in the evacuation process, the paper addresses the influence of several restrictions on the seat-to-exit assignment algorithm, maintaining a purely geometrical approach for consistency. Four situations are considered: first, an assignment method without limitations to search the minimum for the total distance run by all passengers along their escaping paths; second, a protocol that restricts the number of evacuees through each exit according to updated FAR 25 capacity; third, a procedure which tends to the best proportional sharing among exits but obliges to each passenger to egress through the nearest fore or rear exits; and fourth, a scenario which includes both restrictions. The four assignment strategies are applied to turboprops, and narrow body and wide body jets. Seat to exit distance and number of evacuees per exit are the main output variables. The results show the influence of airplane size and the impact of non-symmetries and inappropriate matching between size and longitudinal location of exits.

ABSTRA C T The subject of the present thesis is the interaction between a viscous fluid and a solid body in the presence of a free surface. The problem is expressed first theoretically with a particular focus on the energy conservation and the fluid-body interaction. The problem is considered 2D and monophasic, and some mathematical development allows for a decomposition of the energy dissipation into terms related to the Free Surface and others related to the enstrophy. The numerical model used on the thesis is based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH): a computational method that works by dividing the fluid into particles. Analogously to what is done at continuum level, the conservation properties are studied on the discrete system of particles. Additionally the boundary conditions for a moving body in a viscous flow are treated and discussed using the ghost-fluid method. An explicit algorithm for handling fluid-body coupling is also developed. Following these theoretical developments on the numerical model, some test cases are devised in order to test the ability of the model to correctly reproduce the energy dissipation and the motion of the body. The attenuation of a standing wave is used to compare what is numerically simulated to what is theoretically predicted. Further tests are done in order to monitor the energy dissipation in case of more violent flows involving the fragmentation of the free-surface. The amount of energy dissipated with the different terms is assessed with the numerical model. Other numerical tests are performed in order to test the fluid/body interaction method: forces exerted by waves on simple shapes, and equilibrium of a floating body with a complex shape. Once the numerical model has been validated, numerical tests are performed in order to get a more complete understanding of the physics involved in (almost) realistic cases. First a study is performed on the flow passing a cylinder under the free surface. The study is performed at moderate Reynolds numbers, for various cylinder submergences, and various Froude numbers. The capacity of the numerical solver allows for an investigation of the complex patterns which occur. The wake from the cylinder interacts with the free surface, and some characteristical flow mechanisms are identified. The second study is done on the sloshing problem, both experimentally and numerically. The analysis is restrained to shallow water and horizontal excitation, but a large number of conditions are studied, leading to quite a complete understanding of the wave systems involved. The last part of the thesis still involves a sloshing problem but this time the tank is rolling and there is coupling with a mechanical system. The system is named pendulum-TLD (Tuned Liquid Damper). This kind of system is normally used for damping of civil structures. The analysis is then performed analytically, numerically and experimentally for using liquids with different viscosities, focusing on non-linear features and dissipation mechanisms.

Marine invertebrates with open circulatory system establish low and constant oxygen partial pressure (Po2) around their tissues. We hypothesized that as a first step towards maintenance of low haemolymph and tissue oxygenation, the Po2 in molluscan mantle cavity water should be lowered against normoxic (21 kPa) seawater Po2, but balanced high enough to meet the energetic requirements in a given species. We recorded Po2 in mantle cavity water of five molluscan species with different lifestyles, two pectinids (Aequipecten opercularis, Pecten maximus), two mud clams (Arctica islandica, Mya arenaria), and a limpet (Patella vulgata). All species maintain mantle cavity water oxygenation below normoxic Po2. Average mantle cavity water Po2 correlates positively with standard metabolic rate (SMR): highest in scallops and lowest in mud clams. Scallops show typical Po2 frequency distribution, with peaks between 3 and 10 kPa, whereas mud clams and limpets maintain mantle water Po2 mostly <5 kPa. Only A. islandica and P. vulgata display distinguishable temporal patterns in Po2 time series. Adjustment of mantle cavity Po2 to lower than ambient levels through controlled pumping prevents high oxygen gradients between bivalve tissues and surrounding fluid, limiting oxygen flux across the body surface. The patterns of Po2 in mantle cavity water correspond to molluscan ecotypes.

Nongenetic inheritance mechanisms such as transgenerational plasticity (TGP) can buffer populations against rapid environmental change such as ocean warming. Yet, little is known about how long these effects persist and whether they are cumulative over generations. Here, we tested for adaptive TGP in response to simulated ocean warming across parental and grandparental generations of marine sticklebacks. Grandparents were acclimated for two months during reproductive conditioning, whereas parents experienced developmental acclimation, allowing us to compare the fitness consequences of short-term vs. prolonged exposure to elevated temperature across multiple generations. We found that reproductive output of F1 adults was primarily determined by maternal developmental temperature, but carry-over effects from grandparental acclimation environments resulted in cumulative negative effects of elevated temperature on hatching success. In very early stages of growth, F2 offspring reached larger sizes in their respective paternal and grandparental environment down the paternal line, suggesting that other factors than just the paternal genome may be transferred between generations. In later growth stages, maternal and maternal granddam environments strongly influenced offspring body size, but in opposing directions, indicating that the mechanism(s) underlying the transfer of environmental information may have differed between acute and developmental acclimation experienced by the two generations. Taken together, our results suggest that the fitness consequences of parental and grandparental TGP are highly context dependent, but will play an important role in mediating some of the impacts of rapid climate change in this system.

Bioelectrical impedance measurements are widely used for the study of body composition. Commonly measurements are made at 50 kHz to estimate total body water or at low frequencies (< 10 kHz) to estimate extracellular fluid volume. These measurements can be obtained as single measurements at discrete frequencies, or as fitted data interpolated from plots of measurements made at multiple frequencies. This study compared single frequency and multiple frequency (MF) measurements taken in the intensive care environment. MF bioimpedance (4-1000 kHz) was measured on an adult with and without cardiorespiratory monitoring, and on babies in the neonatal intensive care unit. Measurements obtained at individual frequencies were plotted against frequency and examined for the presence of outlying points. Fitted data for measurements obtained at 5 kHz and 50 kHz with and without cardiorespiratory monitoring were compared. Significant artefacts were detected in measurements at approximately 50 kHz and at integral divisions of this frequency as a result of interference from cardiorespiratory monitors. Single frequency measurements taken at these frequencies may be subject to errors that would be difficult to detect without the aid of information obtained from MF measurements.

Purpose: Although the body-mass management strategies of athletes in high-participation weight-category sports such as wrestling have been thoroughly investigated, little is known about such practices among lightweight rowers. This study examined the body-mass management practices of lightweight rowers before competition and compared these with current guidelines of the International Federation of Rowing Association (FISA). Quantification of nutrient intake in the 1-2 h between weigh-in and racing was also sought. Methods: Lightweight rowers (N = 100) competing in a national regatta completed a questionnaire that assessed body-mass management practices during the 4 wk before and throughout a regatta plus recovery strategies after weigh-in. Biochemical data were collected immediately after weigh-in to validate questionnaire responses. Responses were categorized according to gender and age category (Senior B or younger than 23 yr old, i.e., U23, Senior A or OPEN, i.e., open age limit) for competition. Results: Most athletes (male U23 76.5%, OPEN 92.3%; female U23 84.0%, OPEN 94.1%) decreased their body mass in the weeks before the regatta at rates compliant with FISA guidelines. Gradual dieting, fluid restriction, and increased training load were the most popular methods of body-mass management. Although the importance of recovery after weigh-in was recognized by athletes, nutrient intake and especially sodium (male U23 5.3 &PLUSMN; 4.9, OPEN 7.7 &PLUSMN; 5.9; female U23 5.7 &PLUSMN; 6.8, OPEN 10.2 &PLUSMN; 5.4 mg-kg(-1)) and fluid intake (male U23 12.1 &PLUSMN; 7.1, OPEN 13.5 &PLUSMN; 8.1; female U23 9.4 &PLUSMN; 7.4, OPEN 14.8 &PLUSMN; 6.9 mL.kg(-1)) were below current sports nutrition recommendations. Conclusion: Few rowers were natural lightweights; the majority reduced their body mass in the weeks before a regatta. Nutritional recovery strategies implemented by lightweight rowers after weigh-in were not consistent with current guidelines.

Purpose - In many scientific and engineering fields, large-scale heat transfer problems with temperature-dependent pore-fluid densities are commonly encountered. For example, heat transfer from the mantle into the upper crust of the Earth is a typical problem of them. The main purpose of this paper is to develop and present a new combined methodology to solve large-scale heat transfer problems with temperature-dependent pore-fluid densities in the lithosphere and crust scales. Design/methodology/approach - The theoretical approach is used to determine the thickness and the related thermal boundary conditions of the continental crust on the lithospheric scale, so that some important information can be provided accurately for establishing a numerical model of the crustal scale. The numerical approach is then used to simulate the detailed structures and complicated geometries of the continental crust on the crustal scale. The main advantage in using the proposed combination method of the theoretical and numerical approaches is that if the thermal distribution in the crust is of the primary interest, the use of a reasonable numerical model on the crustal scale can result in a significant reduction in computer efforts. Findings - From the ore body formation and mineralization points of view, the present analytical and numerical solutions have demonstrated that the conductive-and-advective lithosphere with variable pore-fluid density is the most favorite lithosphere because it may result in the thinnest lithosphere so that the temperature at the near surface of the crust can be hot enough to generate the shallow ore deposits there. The upward throughflow (i.e. mantle mass flux) can have a significant effect on the thermal structure within the lithosphere. In addition, the emplacement of hot materials from the mantle may further reduce the thickness of the lithosphere. Originality/value - The present analytical solutions can be used to: validate numerical methods for solving large-scale heat transfer problems; provide correct thermal boundary conditions for numerically solving ore body formation and mineralization problems on the crustal scale; and investigate the fundamental issues related to thermal distributions within the lithosphere. The proposed finite element analysis can be effectively used to consider the geometrical and material complexities of large-scale heat transfer problems with temperature-dependent fluid densities.
