The two-body problem subject to a constant radial thrust is analyzed as a planar motion. The description of the problem is performed in terms of three perturbation methods: DROMO and two others due to Deprit. All of them rely on Hansen?s ideal frame concept. An explicit, analytic, closed-form solution is obtained for this problem when the initial orbit is circular (Tsien problem), based on the DROMO special perturbation method, and expressed in terms of elliptic integral functions. The analytical solution to the Tsien problem is later used as a reference to test the numerical performance of various orbit propagation methods, including DROMO and Deprit methods, as well as Cowell and Kustaanheimo?Stiefel methods.

The Monge–Ampère (MA) equation arising in illumination design is highly nonlinear so that the convergence of the MA method is strongly determined by the initial design. We address the initial design of the MA method in this paper with the L2 Monge-Kantorovich (LMK) theory, and introduce an efficient approach for finding the optimal mapping of the LMK problem. Three examples, including the beam shaping of collimated beam and point light source, are given to illustrate the potential benefits of the LMK theory in the initial design. The results show the MA method converges more stably and faster with the application of the LMK theory in the initial design.

Successful micro and nano-particle patterning on iron doped lithium niobate waveguides using photovoltaic fields is reported. This technique previously used in bulk crystals is here applied to waveguide configuration. Well defined particle patterns are obtained using two types of planar waveguides (by proton exchanged and swift heavy ion irradiation) and metallic and dielectric neutral particles. The use of waveguide configuration has allowed a reduction of the light exposure time until 3 s, two orders of magnitude smaller than typical values used in bulk.

A method to reconstruct the excitation coefficients of wide-slot arrays from near-field data is presented. The plane wave spectrum (PWS) is used for reconstruction, and the shape of the field distribution on a wide slot is considered in the calculation of the PWS. The proposed algorithm is validated through the reconstruction of the excitation coefficients of a wide-slot array with element failures from the simulated nearfield data. The element failures are clearly located by the proposed algorithm

Streaming potentials across cloned epithelial Na+ channels (ENaC) incorporated into planar lipid bilayers were measured. We found that the establishment of an osmotic pressure gradient (Δπ) across a channel-containing membrane mimicked the activation effects of a hydrostatic pressure differential (ΔP) on αβγ-rENaC, although with a quantitative difference in the magnitude of the driving forces. Moreover, the imposition of a Δπ negates channel activation by ΔP when the Δπ was directed against ΔP. A streaming potential of 2.0 ± 0.7 mV was measured across αβγ-rat ENaC (rENaC)-containing bilayers at 100 mM symmetrical [Na+] in the presence of a 2 Osmol/kg sucrose gradient. Assuming single file movement of ions and water within the conduction pathway, we conclude that between two and three water molecules are translocated together with a single Na+ ion. A minimal effective pore diameter of 3 Å that could accommodate two water molecules even in single file is in contrast with the 2-Å diameter predicted from the selectivity properties of αβγ-rENaC. The fact that activation of αβγ-rENaC by ΔP can be reproduced by the imposition of Δπ suggests that water movement through the channel is also an important determinant of channel activity.

Light microscopy of thick biological samples, such as tissues, is often limited by aberrations caused by refractive index variations within the sample itself. This problem is particularly severe for live imaging, a field of great current excitement due to the development of inherently fluorescent proteins. We describe a method of removing such aberrations computationally by mapping the refractive index of the sample using differential interference contrast microscopy, modeling the aberrations by ray tracing through this index map, and using space-variant deconvolution to remove aberrations. This approach will open possibilities to study weakly labeled molecules in difficult-to-image live specimens.

Ligand transport through myoglobin (Mb) has been observed by using optically heterodyne-detected transient grating spectroscopy. Experimental implementation using diffractive optics has provided unprecedented sensitivity for the study of protein motions by enabling the passive phase locking of the four beams that constitute the experiment, and an unambiguous separation of the Real and Imaginary parts of the signal. Ligand photodissociation of carboxymyoglobin (MbCO) induces a sequence of events involving the relaxation of the protein structure to accommodate ligand escape. These motions show up in the Real part of the signal. The ligand (CO) transport process involves an initial, small amplitude, change in volume, reflecting the transit time of the ligand through the protein, followed by a significantly larger volume change with ligand escape to the surrounding water. The latter process is well described by a single exponential process of 725 ± 15 ns at room temperature. The overall dynamics provide a distinctive signature that can be understood in the context of segmental protein fluctuations that aid ligand escape via a few specific cavities, and they suggest the existence of discrete escape pathways.

A small (96-aa) protein, virus protein R (Vpr), of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 contains one hydrophobic segment that could form a membrane-spanning helix. Recombinant Vpr, expressed in Escherichia coli and purified by affinity chromatography, formed ion channels in planar lipid bilayers when it was added to the cis chamber and when the trans chamber was held at a negative potential. The channels were more permeable to Na+ than to Cl- ions and were inhibited when the trans potential was made positive. Similar channel activity was caused by Vpr that had a truncated C terminus, but the potential dependence of channel activity was no longer seen. Antibody raised to a peptide mimicking part of the C terminus of Vpr (AbC) inhibited channel activity when added to the trans chamber but had no effect when added to the cis chamber. Antibody to the N terminus of Vpr (AbN) increased channel activity when added to the cis chamber but had no effect when added to the trans chamber. The effects of potential and antibodies on channel activity are consistent with a model in which the positive C-terminal end of dipolar Vpr is induced to traverse the bilayer membrane when the opposite (trans) side of the membrane is at a negative potential. The C terminus of Vpr would then be available for interaction with AbC in the trans chamber, and the N terminus would be available for interaction with AbN in the cis chamber. The ability of Vpr to form ion channels in vitro suggests that channel formation by Vpr in vivo is possible and may be important in the life cycle of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and/or may cause changes in cells that contribute to AIDS-related pathologies.

Knowing how motile bacteria move near and along a solid surface is crucial to understanding such diverse phenomena as the migration of infectious bacteria along a catheter, biofilm growth, and the movement of bacteria through the pore spaces of saturated soil, a critical step in the in situ bioremediation of contaminated aquifers. In this study, a tracking microscope is used to record the three-dimensional motion of Escherichia coli near a planar glass surface. Data from the tracking microscope are analyzed to quantify the effects of bacteria-surface interactions on the swimming behavior of bacteria. The speed of cells approaching the surface is found to decrease in agreement with the mathematical model of Ramia et al. [Ramia, M., Tullock, D. L. & Phan-Tien, N. (1993) Biophys J. 65,755-778], which represents the bacteria as spheres with a single polar flagellum rotating at a constant rate. The tendency of cells to swim adjacent to the surface is shown in computer-generated reproductions of cell traces. The attractive interaction potential between the cells and the solid surface is offered as one of several possible explanations for this tendency.

In this contribution the line flow method is applied to an optimized secondary optics in a photovoltaic concentration system where the primary optics is already defined and characterized. This method is a particular application of photic field theory. This method uses the parameterization of a given primary optics, including actual tolerances of the manufacturing process. The design of the secondary optics is constrained by the selection of primary optics and maximizes the concentration at a previously specified collection area. The geometry of the secondary element is calculated by using a virtual source, which sends light in a first concentration step. This allows us to calculate the line flow for this specific case. This concept allows designing more compact and efficient secondary optics of photovoltaic systems.

A density-functional theory of ferromagnetism in heterostructures of compound semiconductors doped with magnetic impurities is presented. The variable functions in the density-functional theory are the charge and spin densities of the itinerant carriers and the charge and localized spins of the impurities. The theory is applied to study the Curie temperature of planar heterostructures of III-V semiconductors doped with manganese atoms. The mean-field, virtual-crystal and effective-mass approximations are adopted to calculate the electronic structure, including the spin-orbit interaction, and the magnetic susceptibilities, leading to the Curie temperature. By means of these results, we attempt to understand the observed dependence of the Curie temperature of planar δ-doped ferromagnetic structures on variation of their properties. We predict a large increase of the Curie temperature by additional confinement of the holes in a δ-doped layer of Mn by a quantum well.

Plane model extraction from three-dimensional point clouds is a necessary step in many different applications such as planar object reconstruction, indoor mapping and indoor localization. Different RANdom SAmple Consensus (RANSAC)-based methods have been proposed for this purpose in recent years. In this study, we propose a novel method-based on RANSAC called Multiplane Model Estimation, which can estimate multiple plane models simultaneously from a noisy point cloud using the knowledge extracted from a scene (or an object) in order to reconstruct it accurately. This method comprises two steps: first, it clusters the data into planar faces that preserve some constraints defined by knowledge related to the object (e.g., the angles between faces); and second, the models of the planes are estimated based on these data using a novel multi-constraint RANSAC. We performed experiments in the clustering and RANSAC stages, which showed that the proposed method performed better than state-of-the-art methods.
