In this paper, an organic-inorganic composite film of heteropolyanion was Formed by attaching a Keggin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404-, on carbon electrode surface derivatized by 4-aminophenyl monolayer. The composite film thus grafted on carbon electrode surface has good stability because of the ionic bonding character between SiW12O404- and surface aminophenyl groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the composite film. Compared with SiW12O404- electrodeposited on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the composite film gives three more sharp and well-defined redox couples attributed to two one- and two-electron processes, and the analyses of the voltammograms of SiW12O404- anion in the composite film modified on GCE shows that its surface coverage is close to a closest packing monolayer. STM characterization shows that a two-dimensional order heteropolyanion monolayer was formed on HOPG substrate. The composite film provides a favorable environment for electron and proton transfer between SiW12O404- ion and electrode surface, which may make it suitable for various applications in sensors and microelectronics devices.

A novel method of electrochemical growth was developed for layer-by-layer film formation and proven more advantageous than the commonly used immersion growth in obtaining more uniform multilayer assemblies, as well as being able to proceed in salt-containing solutions without competitive adsorption from the salt ions. A new nickel (II)-cyanometallates modified on glassy carbon electrode was prepared by a new method and studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroelectrochemistry. It was found that the NiHCF film existed in two forms: Ni2Fe(II)-(CN)(6) and M2NiFe(II)(CN)(6), Fe(CN)(3)(6-) codeposited in the NiHCF film existing in free cation or bridged-bond state depended on the property of the cations in electrolyte: in NaCl and LiCl solution, it is in bridges-bonded, but in HCl and KCl, it is free.

Plussian blue(PB)/Pt modified electrode Tvas studied in the CdCl2 electrolyte solution by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. It was found that Cadmium ion was capable of substituting the high-spin iron of PB in an electrochemically induced substitution reaction and hexacyanoferrate cadmium (CdHCF) can be formed in the PB film. But PB and CdHCF in mixture film showed their own electrochemistry properties without serious effect on each other. The mechanism of substitution reaction has been given in detail.

Chromium hexacyanoferrate (CrHCF) modified grassy carbon electrode (GC) in different electrolytes was studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. The results indicate that the behavior of CrHCF firm can be understood in term of two structures: Cr1/3Cr(III)Fe(II)(CN), and MCr(III)Fe(II)(CN)(6). Besides, the film exists in amorphous state: the outer layer is porous film, while the inner layer is relatively compact. According to the electrochemical reaction of CrHCF, the lattice can contract and expand with the cations' diffusion.

A novel poly(vinyl alcohol) grafting 4-vinylpyridine self-gelatinizable copolymer was adapted to immobilize glucose oxidase. The reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was detected at a Prussian Blue (PB) modified graphite electrode. A stable and sensitive glucose amperometric biosensor is described. The copolymer is a good biocompatible polymer in which the glucose oxidase retains high activity. Moreover, the copolymer can adhere firmly to the inorganic PB membrane. The sensor showed an apparent Michaelis-Menten constant of 18 +/- 0.2 mM and a maximum current density of 1.14 mu A cm(-2) mM(-1). The linear range is from 5 mu M to 4.5 mM glucose and the detection limit is 0.5. mu M glucose. The catalytic efficiency of PB for the reduction of H2O2 is higher than that for the oxidation of H2O2. Glucose concentrations in serum samples from healthy persons and diabetic patients were determined using the sensor. The results compared well with those provided by the hospital using a spectroscopy method.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol at the Titanium oxide (TiOx, x<2) film modified with Pt microparticles has been studied. The results show that the modified electrodes exhibit a significant electrocatalytic activity and good stability for the oxidation of methanol. Under the optimal conditions, the peak current density at 0.58 V for the oxidation of methanol in the positive-going sweep is about 526 mA/cm(2) at the scan rate of 5 mV/s in 0.5 mol/L CH3OH and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution and the over potential of the methanol oxidation at the modified electrode increases about 30 similar to 40 mV after 70 minutes at the current density of 100 mA/cm(2) and 50 mA/cm(2). The enhanced electrocatalytic activity and good stability are ascribed to the high dispersion of Pt microparticles in and on the TiOx film and the synergistic effect between Pt microparticles and TiOx.

The irreversible capacity loss of the carbon electrode in lithium-ion batteries at the first cycle is caused mostly by surface film growth. We inspected an unknown irreversible capacity loss (UICL) of the natural graphite electrodes. The charge/discharge behavior of graphite and meso-phase carbon microbeads heat-treated at 2800 degrees C (MCMB28) as the materials of the carbon anode in the lithium-ion battery were compared. It was found that the capacity loss of the natural graphite electrode in the first cycle is caused not only by surface film growth, but also by irreversible lithium-ion intercalation on the new formed surface at the potential range of lithium intercalation, while the capacity loss of the MCMB28 electrode is mainly originated from surface film growth. The reason for the difference of their irreversible capacity losses of these two kinds of carbon material was explained in relation to their structural characteristics. An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance was employed to monitor directly the growth of vanadium hexacyanoferrate (VHF) films on platinum substrates during electrodeposition and interfacial coagulation in the solution containing sulfuric acid electrolyte, vanadium(IV) and hexacyanoferrate(III). Mass changes of the gold/crystal working electrode were correlated with cyclic voltammetry data. Effects of cations (NH4+, Li+, Na+ and K+), anions (SO42- and NO3-) and solvent during redox reactions of the films were studied. The results show that cations were incorporated into the film during reduction and expelled from the film during oxidation. Solvent also participates in VHF electrochemistry, and its role cannot be neglected. Anions play no role in VHF electrochemistry. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on polypyrrole (PPy) film modified with platinum microparticles has been studied by means of electrochemical and in situ Fourier transform infrared techniques. The Pt microparticles, which were incorporated in the PPy film by the technique of cyclic voltammetry, were uniformly dispersed. The modified electrode exhibits significant electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of methanol. The catalytic activities were found to be dependent on Pt loading and the thickness of the PPy film. The linearly adsorbed CO species is the only intermediate of electrochemical oxidation of methanol and can be readily oxidized at the modified electrodes. The enhanced electrocatalytic activities may be due to the uniform dispersion of Pt microparticles in the PPy film and the synergistic effects of the highly dispersed Pt microparticles and the PPy film. Finally, a reaction mechanism is suggested.

The volumetric behavior of a chloride complex of palladium was studied at a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The Pd-IV complex existing on the GCE surface was found, which was proposed to form an octahedral surface complex through coordination to the oxygen atom of an oxygen functional group on the pretreated GCE surface. The ferri/ferrocyanide redox couple was used as a probe to examine the activity of the GCE. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provided the evidence of the surface complex existing on the GCE. Highly dispersed Pd particles can be obtained when the surface complexes were reduced electrochemically to Pd atoms. The Pd particles obtained in this way were in nanometer scale and exhibit high catalytic activity towards the oxidation of hydrazine. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A Co(salen)-Nafion modified electrode was prepared by immersing a glassy carbon electrode coated with the Nafion film into the aqueous solution with saturated Co(salen), The modified electrode showed a stable electrochemical reaction of Co(salen) at about 0 V(vs, SCE), The result of XPS indicated the valence of cobalt in Co(salen) changes from +2 before to +3 after Co(salen) enters the Nafion film, It is due to forming axis coordination of cobalt with sulfonic group in Nafion film, It was found that the mode of electron transfer in Co(salen)-Nafion modified electrode was controlled by physical diffusion and electron hopping, It was also found that the modified electrode could catalyze the reduction of O-2 to H2O2. The real catalyst may be the adduct of Co-I(salen) and O-2.

A palladium particle-modified carbon fiber microdisk array electrode was designed and employed in capillary electrophoresis for the simultaneous detection of hydrazine, methylhydrazine, and isoniazid. The Pd-modified microdisk electrode had high catalytic ability for hydrazines and exhibited good reproducibility and stability. The response for hydrazine was linear over 3 orders of magnitude with a correlation coefficient of 0.993. The detection limits far hydrazine, methylhydrazine, and isoniazid were 1.2, 2.1, and 6.2 pg, respectively.

4-Aminophenol (4-AP), paracetamol (PRCT), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA) (all somewhat hydrophobic compounds) were HPLC electrochemically detected while the signals from uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA) (both hydrophilic compounds at the pH studied) were minimized, taking advantage of the permselectivity of the self-assembled n-alkanethiol monolayer (C-10-SAM)-modified Au electrodes based on solute polarity, The effects of various factors, such as the chain length of the n-alkanethiol modifier, modifying time, and pH value, on the permeability of C-10-SAM coatings were examined, The calibration curves, linear response ranges, detection limits, and reproducibilities of the EC detector for 4-AP, PRCT, NE, and DA were obtained, The result shows that the EC detector can be applied in the chromatographic detection of 4-AP, PRCT, NE, and DA in urine, effectively removing the influence of UA and AA in high concentrations existing in biological samples. As a result, a great improvement in the selectivity of EC detectors has been achieved by using Au electrodes coated with neutral n-alkanethiol monolayer.
