The aim of this study it was to evaluate the use of irrigating solution used during root canal preparation on the adhesive cementation of prefabricated fiberglass pins. The bond strength between different regions of the root and the fiberglass pins cemented into the root canal were evaluated by push-out assay. For this study, 36 human teeth were used, all equally prepared. The irrigating solutions used for biomechanical preparation were: saline solution, sodium hypochlorite 2,5% and glycolic extract of salvia 20%. The dual cure resin cement was used for cementation of pins. After cementation, specimens were sectioned to give 3 slices of approximately 2 mm each (cervical, middle and apical), which were submitted to mechanical push-out test. Were performed ANOVA and Tukey's test with a significance level of 5%, for the analysis of mechanical test. Comparing the thirds we observed that the only solution that presented statistical difference in the bond strength was sodium hypochlorite, which showed higher values for the middle and apical third compared with the cervical third, but when compared without taking into consideration the dental thirds, solutions studied showed no differences in bond strength. Therefore, it was concluded that the solutions studied can be used during endodontic treatment without causing harmful effects on the final adhesive restoration

The consumption of minimally processed vegetables has been growing due to consumer demand for products easy to prepare. As it is extremely manipulated, this product can be contaminated with spoilage organisms such as yeasts, that have the ability to decrease the shelf life of food. In this sense, seeking to concerns about the resistance of microorganisms to sanitation methods for food industries and given the need for more studies of the antimicrobial power of ozone, this study aimed to isolate and identify the yeasts present in minimally processed vegetables, and check their antimicrobial resistance to sodium hypochlorite and ozone. 84 samples of minimally processed vegetables were collected. From them, 47 yeast cultures were isolated and submitted for identification and testing of resistance to sodium hypochlorite sanitizers (50, 100, 200 and 400 ppm) and ozone (0.25 and 0.5 ppm). From the total yeast isolated, 85.1% corresponds to Cryptococcus laurentii, 12.8% to Arxula adeninivorans and 2.1% to Debaryomyces hansenii var. fabryii. All of them were resistant to the sanitizers sodium hypochlorite and ozone at all concentrations tested. Given these observations, some actions must be taken during processing to avoid contamination with deteriorative microbiota.

The objective of this review was reporting an overview about the properties of two irrigating solutions, solution of sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine, used in the treatment of root canals. A solution must submit irrigating antimicrobial action, dissolve waste tissue, promote wetting to facilitate the instrumentation, and present biocompatibility with the adjacent tissues. The sodium hypochlorite used in different concentrations has been the solution of choice among professionals by presenting antimicrobial action and act as a solvent tissue. However, today, chlorhexidine has been widely used as an irrigating solution due to specific properties that enable its use, such as substantivity, antimicrobial effectiveness, and low toxicity. Thus the solution of chlorhexidine with different concentrations is presented as an alternative to irrigating solution for the treatment of root canals.

The present study aims at evaluating dimensional alteration of stone casts made from impressions with a standard irreversible hydrocolloid and an antimicrobial one. For this, an alginate without disinfectant (Type II Jeltrate) and other containing chlorhexidine (Type II Avagel) were used, which rose by the same regime of treatment: without disinfection; immersion; and spraying. A 1% sodium hypochlorite solution was used for 10 minutes. To obtain the impressions, a perforated impression tray was made from a standard metal model. After molding, the molds were washed in running water for 30 seconds to simulate removal of saliva. Then, with the exception of the control group, these molds were subjected to disinfection treatment. After 10 minutes they were washed again. 60 samples poured with type V special gypsum (Durone) were obtained, that were measured 3 times in a stereomicroscope (SZX12, Olympus) to record the average of dimensional alterations. The disinfection treatment did not bring significant changes in the models obtained from both alginate tested (standard p = 0.7102; with chlorhexidine p = 0.5832). The results showed a statistically significant and additional advantage of the traditional alginate on alginate with chlorhexidine, with respect to dimensional alteration (p < 0.05).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of residues of sodium hypo-chlorite gel, chlorhexidine gel, and EDTA gel on dentina l walls after canal preparat ion throughchemical SEM- elemental chemical microanal ys is (EDS) analysis. Forty-eight single-rootedteeth were selected. They had their crowns sectioned and were instrumented with a reciprocat-ing system. The canals were irrigated with 5 mL of saline solution during root canal preparation.After instrumentation, the root canals were irrigated with 3 mL 17% EDTA followed by 1 min ofultrasonic passive activation (33 20 sec) to remove the smear layer, and then irrigated with3 mL of saline solution. The specimens were randomized into three groups (n 5 12) accord ing tothe chemical substance that filled the root canal for 30 min: GI: 5.5% sodium hypochlorite gel;GII: 2% chlorhexidine gel; GIII: 24% EDTA gel; Negative c ontrol group: no substance was used.Then, the root canals were irrigated with 6 mL of saline solution followed by 1 min of ultrasonicpassive activation (33 20 sec). After ultrasonic activation , the canals were irrigated with 2 mLsaline. The roots were sect ioned, and the perce ntage of each chemical element present in thesamples was analyzed through chemi cal SEM-EDS microanalysis. All expe rimental groupsshowed a significantly higher percentage of chemical elements (Na and/or Cl) than the controlgroup (P < 0.03). This in vitro study has shown that, regardless of chemical solutions used evenafter the final irrigation protocol, chemical residues of d ifferent substances remained attached tothe r oot c anal wa lls. Objective. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the silver nanoparticles solution in enterococcus faecallis cultures (ATCC 29212), compared with various solutions of sodium hypoclorithe (NaOCl). Material and methods. Five Agar Petri plates were inoculated with E. faecallis and each of them was placed a cellulose dish embedded with silver nanoparticles solution, or a solution of sodium hypochlorite evaluated (Viarzon, Cloralex, Clorox). Chlorhexidine digluconate 2% was used as positive control and sterile saline solution was used as negative control. After 24 hours of incubation at 37ºc, under aerobic conditions, the zones of inhibition of bacterial growth were measured and the results subjected to the statistical t test among the experimental groups (= 5%). Results. The Cloralex showed to be the most effective reflected in the extent of inhibition in relation to other substances (p< 0.05), except that the chlorhexidine digluconate 2% (p> 0.05). The solution of silver nanoparticles provided a greater zone of inhibition than the sodium hypochlorite solution (Clorox) and Viarzon (p< 0.05). Clorox and Viarzon didn't provide zones of inhibition and were similar to each other (p> 0.05). Conclusions. The solution of silver nanoparticles presents antimicrobial activity in cultured E. faecallis, even higher than other commercial forms of sodium hypochlorite. Further studies should be carried out to determine its viability as irrigating solution in endodontics (AU)

Purpose: To investigate the cumulative effects of brushing (B) or immersion (I), using different cleansing agents, on the surface roughness, hardness and color stability of a heat-polymerized denture resin, Lucitone 550 (L), and a hard chairside reline resin, Tokuyama Rebase Fast II (T). Methods: A total of 316 specimens (10 x 2 mm) were fabricated. The specimens (n= 9) were divided into brushing or immersion groups according to the following agents: dentifrice/distilled water (D), 1% sodium hypochlorite (Na0C1), Corega Tabs (Pb), 1% chlorhexidine gluconate (Chx), and 0.2% peracetic acid (Ac). Brushing and immersion were tested independently. Assays were performed after 1, 3, 21, 45 and 90 blushing cycles or immersion of 10 seconds each. Data were evaluated statistically by repeated measures ANOVA. Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) post-hoc test was used to determine differences between means (a= 0.05). Results: For L there was no statistically significant difference in roughness, except a significant decrease in roughness by brushing with D. T showed a significant effect on the roughness after 90 immersions with Ac. Hardness values decreased for L when specimens were immersed or brushed in Na0C1 and Pb. The hardness of T decreased with increases in the repetitions (immersion or brushing), regardless of the cleaning method. Values of color stability for L resin showed significant color change after brushing with and immersion in Ac and Pb. Brushing with D exhibited a higher incidence of color change. For T there were no significant differences between cleaning agents and repetitions in immersion. A color change was noted after three brushings with the Ac, Chx, and D. Brushing with dentifrice decreased roughness of L. Immersion in or brushing with Na0C1 and Pb decreased the hardness of L. For T, hardness decreased with increases in immersions or brushing. Color changes after the immersion in or brushing with cleaning agents were clinically acceptable according to National Bureau of Standards parameters for both resins.
