In order to better understand the natural history of chronic functional constipation, a questionnaire was applied to 163 children and infants, before beginning standardized treatment. Median age (range) at start was 3 mo(0-108 mo) but age at arrival at the Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit was 53 mo(2-146 mo). In 62.4% of the cases symptoms began before or up to 3 mo after cow's milk introduction and rarely around (-/+ 6 mo) toilet training. Possible complications appeared progressively, often at preschool or school age or as the first noticeable manifestation: recurrent abdominal pain (61.1%), fecal soiling (45.4%), fecal blood (35%), enuresis (23.3%), vomiting (19%), urinary infection (17.9%), urinary retention (8.6%). Abdominal distension was rarely detected on physical examination and was usually discrete. In conclusion, children attended in Botucatu begin their constipation at an early age, frequently associated with weaning, and important complications may ensue along years. This evolution should be avoided by prevention and early treatment of constipation.

The increased prevalence of diabetic individuals has become a public health problem. Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in plasma glucose levels. It impairs the physiological equilibrium in utilization of carbohydrate by tissues. The persistent hyperglycemia can produce deleterious effects on bone formation due the microvascular complication. The present paper reviews the bibliography linking the impact of glycemic control at complications associated at diabetes mellitus on osseointegration. In experimental models of diabetes it was observed a reduced level of bone-implant contact. This failure can be reduced by means of hyperglycemia control. Also, several studies point the beneficial effect of coated implant on osseointegration process. It is necessary to take special care into account for the placement of implants in diabetic patient and improve the percentages of implant survival. A rigorous control of plasma glycaemia, together with other measures, like as absence of chronic complications, good oral hygiene and regular medical follow-up has been related to rising the percentages of successful in diabetic patients.

The oral rehabilitation now has a powerful ally: the dental implants. There is no denying the importance of the implant within the context of dental practice. Initially indicated for the rehabilitation of fully edentulous patients, now has gained growing space, with indications for partial edentulism, multiple unit, with high predictability of success in esthetic restorations, combined with the techniques of manipulation of soft tissues, and guided tissue regenerationearly prosthetic loading. But like any dental procedure, whether surgical or medical implantology is also subject to the occurrence of failures and complications. This paper aims to provide a review of the literature for discussion of these complications, their causes, their managements and proservation.

Parenting practices can be understood as the behaviors emitted by parents to educate and socialize their children. The present study investigates the influence of the parenting practices according to the baby sex and age, family configuration and number of children. For this, 50 adult mothers were questioned according to the Parental Styles Inventory for Mothers with Babies (IEPMB). An analysis with the results indicates that mothers with baby girls normally uses a more Positive Monitoring practice when compared with mothers with boy babies. A positive correlation (r = +0.54, p <0.001) was found, between the age of the baby and the practice of negligence, meaning that there is an increase of the usage in the practical as the baby age increases. Also a significant difference (p = 0.04) in the Inconsistent Punishment practice pointed out to the fact that mothers from nuclear families seem to use this practice more than mothers from other family configurations. And multiparous mothers use more Physical Abuse practical than primiparous mothers (p = 0.02). Concerning this analysis, we support a discussion in the present work about the importance of interventions that focus on the effect of specific positive practices, the reduction of negative practices and the role of the network support on the children development.

In the present study, participated sixteen mothers. We discuss about risk factors for the development of the baby, especially main measurements maternal and sociodemographic. Mothers were interviewed and inventories to assess anxiety and stress. The babies were assessed from 'Inventário Operacionalizado Portage. The results pointed positive correlations between anxiety and self-care, and negative associations between maternal stress and cognitive development of infants. There were significant correlations between maternal age and cognitive, and motor development in the second month (p=0.005; 013). Gestational age was significant for the motor area in the second month of a baby's life (p=0.026), however this correlate was negative. The variable birth weight showed significant difference in cognition and negative in the second month (p=0.29); and maternal education was significant positive for the language area in the first month (p=0.000). These results emphasized the importance of guidance and monitoring of mothers during the postpartum.

Objetive: The goal of this review is to discuss the evidence regarding the impact of pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity on perinatal outcomes. Data Collection Method: We conducted a search for articles in the Medline, PubMed and Scielo databases covering the past 5 years, and reviewed the bibliographical references contained in the articles selected. Articles were selected by subjective evaluation in terms of methodology, sample size and year of publication. Summary of evidence: We found strong evidence linking excess weight before pregnancy with the development of birth defects, fetal and neonatal deaths and macrosomia,. Conclusions: Excess weight in the pre-pregnancy is an important risk factor for the health of the fetus, whose importance increases because it is a modifiable risk factor.

Introduction: The treatment of adult transverse maxillary deficiency is the surgically assisted maxillary expansion. Several surgical techniques have been described for this and complications have been related to these procedures. Objective: the aim of this study was evaluate the incidence of complications associated with surgically assisted maxillary expansion. Material and method: 33 individuals undergone surgically assisted maxillary expansion by subtotal Le Fort I osteotomy with a step in the zygomatic-maxillary buttress and associated to pterigomaxillary disjunction and osteotomy of intermaxillary suture. Operative complications, post-operative complications and the distance between the upper teeth were recorded. Result: 12 men and 21 women with an average age of 24.64 years undergone the procedure. The interdental distances increased from preoperative to 2 months post?operative time. The prevalent complications were sinusitis (6%) and teeth displacement and inclination (6%). Conclusion: Surgically assisted maxillary expansion is an effective and low morbidity procedure to treat transverse maxillary deficiency in adults.
