Foraminifera are an important faunal element of the benthos in oxygen-depleted settings such as Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZs) where they can play a relevant role in the processing of phytodetritus. We investigated the uptake of phytodetritus (labeled with 13C and 15N) by cal-careous foraminifera in the 0-1 cm sediment horizon under different oxygen concentrations within the OMZ in the eastern Arabian Sea. The in situ tracer experiments were carried out along a depth transect on the Indian margin over a period of 4 to 10 days. The uptake of phy-todetrital carbon within 4 days by all investigated species shows that phytodetritus is a rele-vant food source for foraminifera in OMZ sediments. The decrease of total carbon uptake from 540 to 1100 m suggests a higher demand for carbon by species in the low-oxygen core region of the OMZ or less food competition with macrofauna. Especially Uvigerinids showed high uptake of phytodetrital carbon at the lowest oxygenated site. Variation in the ratio of phytodetrital carbon to nitrogen between species and sites indicates that foraminiferal carbon and nitrogen use can be decoupled and different nutritional demands are found between spe-cies. Lower ratio of phytodetrital carbon and nitrogen at 540 m could hint for greater demand or storage of food-based nitrogen, ingestion or hosting of bacteria under almost anoxic condi-tions. Shifts in the foraminiferal assemblage structure (controlled by oxygen or food availabil-ity) and in the presence of other benthic organisms account for observed changes in the pro-cessing of phytodetritus in the different OMZ habitats. Foraminifera dominate the short-term processing of phytodetritus in the OMZ core but are less important in the lower OMZ bounda-ry region of the Indian margin as biological interactions and species distribution of foraminifera change with depth and oxygen levels.

Introduction: Protease activated receptors (PARs) are G-protein-coupled transmembrane receptors that are expressed on many cell types and implicated in various inflammatory processes in vivo. The induction of PAR2 as a result of the inflammatory response associated with dental caries remains to be determined. Objectives: The aim was to localise the expression of PAR2 in human dental pulp from carious teeth and to confirm receptor functionality using an in vitro assay. Methods: Dental pulp sections from decalcified carious teeth were examined by immunocytochemsitry. Membrane preparations from cultured pulp fibroblasts were subject to SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting to confirm fibroblast-associated immunoreactivity. The functionality of PAR2 on dental pulp fibroblasts was studied using calcium imaging in the presence of several potential activators including a PAR2 agonist (PAR2-AP), trypsin and pulpal enzymes from a carious tooth. Results: Immunocytochemistry revealed intense PAR2 immunoreactivity on pulpal fibroblasts subjacent to carious lesions but not in surrounding regions of the dental pulp. Pulp specimens from a dental injury model showed no expression of PAR2, suggesting its expression was related to cellular changes associated with ongoing caries. The localisation of PAR2 staining to pulpal fibroblasts in carious teeth was confirmed by Western blotting which revealed PAR2 immunoreactive bands in membrane fractions prepared from pulp fibroblasts. In functional studies, challenge of cultured pupal fibroblasts with PAR2-AP, trypsin and an extract of proteolytic enzymes from a carious dental pulp, showed specific activation of PAR2. Conclusions: This work demonstrates that PAR2 is functional and inducible in human dental pulp fibroblasts in response to caries and that endogenous pulpal enzymes can activate PAR2.

Objectives: To identify factors associated with root caries development during a two year period in a population of independently living older adults. Methods: A prospective cohort study was carried out with 334 independently living volunteers aged 65 and older. At baseline (t0), each participant completed a questionnaire which recorded age, gender, medical history, fluoride exposure, oral and denture hygiene practices, smoking and alcohol consumption, diet information, and socio economic information. Clinical examinations were performed and stimulated saliva samples were collected. Patients were reviewed 12(t1) and 24(t2) months later to determine the root caries increment. Results: 307 adults were assessed at t1 and 280 were assessed at t2 with 83.8% of participants examined at 24 months. Incidence of root caries in this cohort was 17.4% at t1 and 21.6% at t2. The mean root caries increment was 0.43 (SD 1.45) surfaces at t1 and 0.70 (SD 1.86) surfaces at t2. Age >70 years, completing education at primary level, poor oral hygiene, xerostomia, coronal decay at baseline, higher root caries index at baseline and number of exposed root surfaces showed a statistically significant association (P < 0.05) with root caries development. Conclusion: Root caries is a substantive dental health problem for our older population. Root caries prevention strategies should be targeted at older adults who have poor plaque control and high levels of caries experience. In particular patients with xerostomia should be targeted with preventive measures.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of untreated carious lesions in permanent teeth in patients (under the age of 18) referred for an orthodontic assessment in specialist practice. In addition, the figures shall be compared with national data for Northern Ireland (as outlined in the recent Child Dental Health Survey 2013)
The Gold standard would be that 100% of patients would be caries free upon presentation.

Methods: The clinical records and radiographs (OPT of quality grading 1 or 2) of 337 patients were reviewed. This encompassed patients who had an orthodontic assessment carried out in specialist practice over a 6 month period (following referral from their general dental practitioner)

Results: A total of 337 patient records were examined. Of these, 149 were male (44.2%) and 188 were female (55.8%), with an age range of 7-17 years at the time of new patient assessment. It was found that 36 patients (10.7%) had evidence (clinical and/or radiographic) of active and untreated dental caries. Of those affected, 14 were male and 22 were female.
Breaking the data down in terms of age, we can also get some indication as to how this cohort compares with national data for Northern Ireland :⃰

7-10 years (Mean = 9.3) = 14.3% caries (versus NI average of 6% for 8 year olds)
11-13 years (Mean = 12.1) = 10.1% caries, (versus NI average of 16% for 12 year olds)
14-17 years (Mean = 15.2) = 9.1% caries (versus NI average of 15% for 15 year olds)

⃰using the diagnostic threshold “Decay into dentine (visual dentine caries excluded)”

Conclusion: In this sample group, a total of 10.7% of patients (9.4% of males, 11.7% of females) presented with evidence of undiagnosed caries upon being assessed as a new patient in specialist orthodontic practice. Hence, the gold standard was not met.

We estimated the detonation depth and net explosive weight for a very shallow underwater explosion using cutoff frequencies and spectral analysis. With detonation depth and a bubble pulse the net explosive weight for a shallow underwater explosion could simply be determined. The ray trace modeling confirms the detonation depth as a source of the hydroacoustic wave propagation in a shallow channel. We found cutoff frequencies of the reflection off the ocean bottom to be 8.5 Hz, 25 Hz, and 43 Hz while the cutoff frequency of the reflection off the free surface to be 45 Hz including 1.01 Hz for the bubble pulse, and also found the cutoff frequency of surface reflection to well fit the ray-trace modeling. We also attempted to corroborate our findings using a 3D bubble shape modeling and boundary element method. Our findings led us to the net explosive weight of the underwater explosion offshore of Baengnyeong-do for the ROKS Cheonan sinking to be approximately 136 kg TNT at a depth of about 8 m within an ocean depth of around 44 m. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

This qualitative study explored the career termination experiences of 9 male, retired professional cricketers, between the ages of 28 to 40 (M = 34, SD = 4.65). The participants took part in retrospective, semi-structured interviews. Data from the interviews were inductively content analysed within three transition phases of the retirement process: reasons for retirement, factors affecting adaptation, and reactions to retirement. The reasons for retirement were multicausal with the majority of the participants highlighting contractual pressures and a lack of communication as important precursors to retirement. Three main themes accounted for the factors affecting adaptation: a limited pursuit of other interests, developmental experiences and coping strategies. In terms of reactions to retirement, all of the participants reflected negatively on the termination of their career, with a sense of loss and resentment characterising the post-retirement period. The findings illustrated the sport-specific nature of career termination in professional cricket, and added further support to the emerging consensus that the distinction between voluntary and involuntary retirement is, at best, unclear.

There are approximately 150 Admiral Nurses in the UK who work alongside other health and social care professionals to support people with dementia and their family carers. However, the stigma of the disease and the lack of recognition that dementia is a life limiting illness have led to neglect in addressing the end of life challenges. The small in-depth study reported here aimed to add to an extremely limited formal evidence base for the effectiveness of this approach and to develop a greater understanding of the range of knowledge and skills required of them in ensuring they are better able to support families in the later stages of the illness. Findings focus on the experiences of family carers, the impact of performing the Admiral Nurse role and the use of qualitative measures in this setting.

Of the many ways in which depth can be intimated in drawings, perspective has undoubtedly been one of the most frequently examined. But there is also an equally rich history associated with other forms of pictorial representation. Alternatives to perspective became particularly significant in the early twentieth century as artists and architects, intent on throwing off the conventions of their predecessors, looked to new ways of depicting depth. In architecture, this tendency was exemplified by Modernism’s preference for parallel projection – most notably axonometric and oblique. The use of these techniques gave architects the opportunity to convey a new and uniquely modern form of spatial expression. At once shallow and yet expansive, a key feature of these drawings was their ability to support perceptual ambiguity. This paper will consider the philosophy and science of vision, out of which these preoccupations emerged. In this context, the nineteenth-century discovery of stereopsis and the invention of the stereoscope will be used to illustrate the way in which attempts to test the limits of spatial perception led to an opening up of visual experience; and provided a definition of visual experience that could encompass the representational ambiguities later exploited by the early twentieth-century avant-garde.

At the core of this paper is a psychosocial inquiry into the Marxist concept of alienation and its applications to the field of digital labour. Following a brief review of different theoretical works on alienation, it looks into its recent conceptualisations and applications to the study of online social networking sites. Finally, the authors offer suggestions on how to extend and render more complex these recent approaches through in-depth analyses of Facebook posts that exemplify how alienation is experienced, articulated, and expressed online. For this perspective, the article draws on Rahel Jaeggi’s (2005) reassessment of alienation, as well as the depth-hermeneutic method of “scenic understanding” developed by Alfred Lorenzer (e.g. 1970; 1986).

The aim of this paper is to assess the impact of financial depth on economic growth in the EU-15 countries from 1970 until 2012, using the two-step System GMM estimator. Even though it might be expected a positive impact, the results show it is negative and sometimes even negative and statistically significant. Among the reasons presented for this, the existence of banking crises seems to better explain these results. In tranquil periods, financial deepening appears to have a positive impact, whereas in banking crises it is persistently negative and statistically significant. Also, after an assessment of the impact of stock markets on economic growth, it appears that more developed countries in the EU-15 have an economy more reliant on this segment of the financial system rather than in bank intermediation.

In this work, the magnetic field penetration depth for high-Tc cuprate superconductors is calculated using a recent Interlayer Pair Tunneling (ILPT) model proposed by Chakravarty, Sudb0, Anderson, and Strong [1] to explain high temperature superconductivity. This model involves a "hopping" of Cooper pairs between layers of the unit cell which acts to amplify the pairing mechanism within the planes themselves. Recent work has shown that this model can account reasonably well for the isotope effect and the dependence of Tc on nonmagnetic in-plane impurities [2] , as well as the Knight shift curves [3] and the presence of a magnetic peak in the neutron scattering intensity [4]. In the latter case, Yin et al. emphasize that the pair tunneling must be the dominant pairing mechanism in the high-Tc cuprates in order to capture the features found in experiments. The goal of this work is to determine whether or not the ILPT model can account for the experimental observations of the magnetic field penetration depth in YBa2Cu307_a7. Calculations are performed in the weak and strong coupling limits, and the efi"ects of both small and large strengths of interlayer pair tunneling are investigated. Furthermore, as a follow up to the penetration depth calculations, both the neutron scattering intensity and the Knight shift are calculated within the ILPT formalism. The aim is to determine if the ILPT model can yield results consistent with experiments performed for these properties. The results for all three thermodynamic properties considered are not consistent with the notion that the interlayer pair tunneling must be the dominate pairing mechanism in these high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Instead, it is found that reasonable agreement with experiments is obtained for small strengths of pair tunneling, and that large pair tunneling yields results which do not resemble those of the experiments.
