Ferromanganese micro- and macronodules in eupelagic clays at Site AKO26-35 in the Southwest Pacific Basin were studied in order to check REE distribution during ferromanganese ore formation in non-productive zones of the Pacific Ocean. Host sediments and their labile fraction, ferromanganese micronodules (in size fractions 50-100, 100-250, 250-500, and >500 ?m) from eupelagic clays (horizons 37-10, 105-110, 165-175, and 189-190 cm), and buried ferromanganese micronodules (horizons 64-68, 158-159, and 165-166 cm) were under study. Based on partition analysis data anomalous REE enrichment in eupelagic clays from Site AKO26-35 is related to accumulation of rare earth elements in iron hydroxophosphates. Concentration of Ce generally bound with manganese oxyhydroxides is governed by oxidation of Mn and Ce in ocean surface waters. Micronodules (with Mn/Fe from 0.7 to 1.6) inherit compositional features of the labile fraction of bottom sediments. Concentrations of Ce, Co, and Th depend on micronodule sizes. Enrichment of micronodules in hydrogenic or hydrothermal matter is governed by their sizes and by a dominant source of suspended oxyhydroxide material. The study of buried ferromanganese micronodules revealed general regularities in compositional evolution of oxyhydroxide matrices of ferromanganese micro- and macronodules. Compositional variation of micro- and macronodules relative to the labile fraction of sediments in the Pacific non-productive zone dramatically differs from the pattern in bioproductive zones where micronodule compositions in coarser fractions are similar to those in associated macronodules and labile fractions of host sediments due to more intense suboxidative diagenesis.

Pelagic processes and their relation to vertical flux have been studied in the Norwegian and Greenland Seas since 1986. Results of long-term sediment trap deployments and adjoining process studies are presented, and the underlying methodological and conceptional background is discussed. Recent extension of these investigations at the Barents Sea continental slope are also presented. With similar conditions of input irradiation and nutrient conditions, the Norwegian and Greenland Seas exhibit comparable mean annual rates of new and total production. Major differences can be found between these regions, however, in the hydrographic conditions constraining primary production and in the composition and seasonal development of the plankton. This is reflected in differences in the temporal patterns of vertical particle flux in relation to new production in the euphotic zone, the composition of particles exported and in different processes leading to their modification in the mid-water layers. In the Norwegian Sea heavy grazing pressure during early spring retards the accumulation of phytoplankton stocks and thus a mass sedimentation of diatoms that is often associated with spring blooms. This, in conjunction with the further seasonal development of zooplankton populations, serves to delay the annual peak in sedimentation to summer or autumn. Carbonate sedimentation in the Norwegian Sea, however, is significantly higher than in the Greenland Sea, where physical factors exert a greater control on phytoplankton development and the sedimentation of opal is of greater importance. In addition to these comparative long-term studies a case study has been carried out at the continental slope of the Barents Sea, where an emphasis was laid on the influence of resuspension and across-slope lateral transport with an analysis of suspended and sedimented material.

Distribution of pore space and degree of cementation appear to be the main factors controlling the permeability of sediments retrieved from the Lau Basin. The undisturbed microfabrics of two lithologies, nannofossil ooze and vitric sandy silt, commonly found at Holes 834A, 835A, 838A, and 839Aof Leg 135 were examined by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectral analysis and image analysis systems. The results of these analyses were compared with laboratory determinations of porosity, grain-size distribution, and permeability on discrete samples from the same sediment depths. The permeability of the vitric sandy silt is 3-5 orders of magnitude higher than the nannofossil ooze samples. The porosity of nannofossil ooze ranges from 6% to 12% greater than the porosity of vitric sandy silt, which partially reflects the finer texture of nannofossil ooze. Although the correlation of higher porosity with lower permeability is not surprising, factors other than simply grain-size distribution must be invoked to explain the large differences in permeability found in these samples.

A study of petrographic and mineral compositions of 26 sediment cores from the western part of the Central Basin of the Indian Ocean has identified biogenic, terrigenous, volcanogenic, and authigenic sediment types formed in certain facies conditions. On the basis of bio- and paleomagnetic stratigraphy data from the cores sedimentation rates of different sediment types have been calculated. Modern and Pliocene-Pleistocene positions of the main facies boundaries (the critical depth of carbonate accumulation, the geochemical boundary between hemi- and miopelagic zones, the frontal boundaries of the equatorial belt of biogenic silica accumulation) have been determined. It has been shown that the sedimentary process during Pliocene-Quaternary had cycle variations characterized by successive changes of different sedimentation types - hemipelagic, miopelagic, and biogenic.

Seventeen eastern Mediterranean Pliocene sapropels from ODP Sites 964, 966, 967 and 969, some of which are coeval, have been analysed for their geochemistry. The sapropels are characterized by very high organic carbon contents (up to 30%) which are reported to be the result of both increased productivity and improved preservation. Although the organic matter in the sapropels is mainly of marine origin, the d13Corg values and C/N ratios appear "terrestrial". This is the result of anaerobic organic matter degradation which preferentially removed nitrogen- and 13C-rich organic components. A comparison with Ti/Al profiles, which mimic the precession index, and a calculation of organic carbon accumulation rates indicate that sedimentation rates were at most 30% lower or at most 50% higher during sapropel formation. Thus, sapropel formation lasted from between 2000 and 10,000 years at Site 964 to between 4500 and 12,000 years at Site 967. A synthesis of new data and a comparison with existing models indicates that productivity, which increased due to extra nutrients supplied as a result of winter mixing and as a result of enhanced input by the Nile, was the driving mechanism behind sapropel formation. The resulting sapropel formation was simultaneous at different depths, but lasted longer in the part of the basin closest to the Nile.

A rock salt-lamprophyre dyke contact zone (sub-vertical, NE-SW strike) was investigated for its petrographic, mechanic and physical properties by means of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and rock magnetic properties, coupled with quantitative microstructural analysis and thermal mathematical modelling. The quantitative microstructural analysis of halite texture and solid inclusions revealed good spatial correlation with AMS and halite fabrics. The fabrics of both lamprophyre and rock salt record the magmatic intrusion, "plastic" flow and regional deformation (characterized by a NW-SE trending steep foliation). AMS and microstructural analysis revealed two deformation fabrics in the rock salt: (1) the deformation fabrics in rock salt on the NW side of the dyke are associated with high temperature and high fluid activity attributed to the dyke emplacement; (2) On the opposite side of the dyke, the emplacement-related fabric is reworked by localized tectonic deformation. The paleomagnetic results suggest significant rotation of the whole dyke, probably during the diapir ascent and/or the regional Tertiary to Quaternary deformation.

One of the goals of EU BASIN is to understand variability in production across the Atlantic and the impact of this variability on higher trophic levels. One aspect of these investigations is to examine the biomes defined by Longhurst (2007). These biomes are largely based on productivity measured with remote sensing. During MSM 26, mesopelagic fish and size-spectrum data were collected to test the biome classifications of the north Atlantic. In most marine systems, the size-spectrum is a decay function with more, smaller organisms and fewer larger organisms. The intercept of the size-spectrum has been linked to overall productivity while the slope represents the "rate of decay" of this productivity (Zhou 2006, doi:10.1093/plankt/fbi119). A Laser In-Situ Scattering Transmissometer was used to collect size-spectrum data and net collections were made to capture mesopelagic fish. The relationship among the mesopelagic fish size and abundance distributions will be compared to the estimates of production from the size-spectrum data to evaluate the biomes of the stations occupied during MSM 26.

Atomic-absorption spectrophotometry and instrumental neutron activation analysis were used to determine concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3, FeOt, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O, MnO, La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Lu, Sc, Co, Cr, Th, Hf, and Ta for 14 basalt samples from the lower portion of Hole 462A in the Nauru Basin. The basalts are similar to normal midocean ridge basalt (MORB) for the elements analyzed, and light rare-earth elements (LREE) are depleted relative to heavy rare-earth elements (HREE). Two samples are extensively altered to smectites and show significant reductions in Al2O3, CaO, MnO, Na2O, REE, Sc, Co, and Hf and gains in MgO and FeOt relative to unaltered samples. The increase in MgO and decrease in CaO indicate that alteration was caused by hydrothermal solutions.

A series of samples of inhabitants of hydrothermal vents were collected during the 12-th cruise of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in Guaymas Basin (the Gulf of California) and the Axial Seamount area (Juan de Fuca Ridge). Concentrations of trace and heavy metals in the tissues of Ridgeia piscesae, Riftia pachyptila, and Paralvinella palmiformis were analyzed. Neutron-activation analysis revealed significantly higher concentrations of uranium in tissues of Paralvinella palmiformis as compared to ambient seawater. Possible reasons for such phenomenon are discussed. The data obtained by neutron-activation method are compared with those obtained by atomic-absorption method for the same tissues analyzed.

The fine-grained sediments of the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela, of the last 130 ky, whose deposition history is well characterized, were analyzed geochemically in order to test the validity of sediment bulk geochemistry as an indicator of detrital provenance. Several binary and ternary diagrams as well as the chemical index of alteration (CIA) were tested for their capacity to discriminate the poorly contrasted detrital sources to the Cariaco Basin, and to describe the temporal evolution of the contributions of these different sources. Most of the diagrams tested did not allow a good discrimination of sources or, when sources were well discriminated, did not allow an interpretation of the temporal variations consistent with the known history. A relatively good discrimination of sources and a consistent interpretation of temporal variations were however obtained using Hf vs. Th and La/Yb vs. Gd/Yb binary diagrams, as well as Ti-Zr-Th, Ti-Zr-La, and Lu-Hf-Th ternary diagrams. Compared to the previous studies of the detrital content of the Cariaco Basin sediments, the geochemical approach permitted the recognition of a sediment contribution eroded from the Unare platform and Gulf of Cariaco during rapid sea level oscillations, and the contribution of Saharan eolian particles during the Younger Dryas-Preboreal and MIS6-5 transition. The choice of plotted elements was determined after considering carrier minerals, so that different elements may be informative in different sedimentary contexts. Overall, mineral sorting during transport appears as a major limit to quantitative estimation of the different contributions. In particular mineral sorting leads to the selective enrichment of elements associated with clays (Al, Rb, Th and LREE) in sediments deposited in the basin. Unless the geochemical effect of mineral sorting can be measured, it appears that quantitative provenance analysis should be performed on fractions of similar grain size instead of bulk sediment.

An overview is presented of the current state of knowledge on paleo-ecological aspects of calcareous dinoflagellate resting cysts. Apart from literature-based information, a discussion of new results is also provided from Equatorial Atlantic surface plankton samples, surface sediment samples and Late Quaternary sediments from two gravity cores. With the aid of redundancy analysis statistics, variations in the calcareous cyst content of both cores are correlated to variations in total organic carbon (TOC). On a global scale, the calcareous cyst distribution in bottom sediments varies with latitude and inshore-offshore gradients. In the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, enhanced calcareous cyst production can be observed in regions and time intervals with stratified, oligotrophic conditions in the upper water masses.
