A tangential filtration process was implemented in this study using porous ceramic tubes made of alpha-alumina produced by the slip-casting technique. These tubes were sintered at 1450 degrees C and characterized by mercury intrusion porosimetry, which revealed a mean pore size of 0.5 mu m. The tubes were chemically impregnated with a zirconium citrate solution, after which they were calcined and heat treated at temperatures of up to 600 and 900 degrees C to eliminate volatile organic compounds and transform the zirconium citrate into zirconium oxide impregnated in the alumina in the form of nanoparticle agglomerates. The microporous pipes were tested on a microfiltration hydraulic system to analyze their performance in the demulsification of sunflower oil and water mixtures. The fluid-dynamic parameters of Reynolds number and transmembrane pressure were varied in the process. The volume of permeate was analyzed by measuring the Total Organic Carbon concentration (TOC), which indicated 99% of oil phase retention. The emulsified mixture was characterized by optical microscopy, while the morphology and composition of the impregnated microporous tubes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Quantification of the TOC values for the tube impregnated once at 600 degrees C showed the best demulsification performance, with the concentration on permeate smaller than 10 mg/L. The impregnated tube sintered once at 900 degrees C presented low carbon concentration (smaller than 20 mg/L), has the advantage of presenting the greatest trans-membrane flux in relation to the other microporous tube. This work presents a new route of preparation of zirconium ceramic foams based on the thermostimulated sol-gel process. This method produces gelled bodies with up to 90% of porosity in the wet gel and can be used to make complex-shaped components. Unfortunately, the shrinkage during the drying step allows to a catastrophic reduction (50%) of the foam porosity. To improve the foam stability we carried out a systematic study of the effect of gel foam aging on the drying process. Samples were aged in closed vessel at 25 C during different time period (from 6 to 240 h). The shrinkage and the mass loss during drying at 50 C were measured in situ, using a non-contact technique performed with a special apparatus. The results show that the total linear shrinkage decreases from 46% to 8% as the aging period increase from 6 to 240 h. This behavior is followed by a small change of total mass loss, from 42 to 54%. It indicates that by aging the structural stiffness of the foams increases due to secondary condensation reactions. Thus, by controlling the aging period, the porosity can be increased from 67 to 75% and the average size of mesopores of dried foams can be screened from 0.3 to 0.9 mum. Finally, these results demonstrate that the thermostimulated sol-gel transition provides a potential route to ceramic foams manufacture.
Photo luminescence: A probe for short, medium and long-range self-organization order in ZrTiO4 oxide

Photoluminescent disordered ZrTiO4 powders were obtained by the polymeric precursor soft-chemical method. This oxide system (ordered and disordered) was characterized by photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and UV vis absorption experiments. The UV absorption tail formation in the disordered oxides was related to the diminution of optical band gap. In the disordered phase, this oxide displayed broad band photoluminescence caused by change in coordination number of titanium and zirconium with oxygen atoms. The gap decreased from 3.09 eV in crystalline oxide to 2.16 eV in disordered oxide. The crystalline oxide presented an orthorhombic alpha-PbO2-type structure in which Zr4+ and Ti4+ were randomly distributed in octahedral coordination polyhedra with oxygen atoms. The amorphous-crystalline transition occurred at almost 700 degrees C, at which point the photoluminescence vanished. The Raman peak at close to 80-200 cm(-1) indicated the presence of locally ordered Ti-O-n and Zr-O-n polyhedra in disordered photoluminescent oxides. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Single-phase perovskite structure BaZrxTi1-xO3 (BZT) (0.05less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.25) thin films were deposited on Pt-Ti-SiO2-Si substrates by the spin-coating technique. The structural modifications in the thin films were studied using x-ray diffraction and micro-Raman scattering techniques. Lattice parameters calculated from x-ray data indicate an increase in lattice (a axis) with the increasing content of zirconium in these films. Such Zr substitution also result in variations of the phonon mode wave numbers, especially those of lower wave numbers, for BaZrxTi1-xO3 thin films, corroborate to the structural change caused by the zirconium doping. on the other hand, Raman modes persist above structural phase transition, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive in the cubic phase. The origin of these modes must be interpreted as a function of a local breakdown of the cubic symmetry, which could be a result of some kind of disorder. The BZT thin films exhibited a satisfactory dielectric constant close to 181-138, and low dielectric loss tan delta<0.03 at the frequency of 1 kHz. The leakage current density of the BZT thin films was studied at elevated temperatures and the data obey the Schottky emission model. Through this analysis the Schottky barrier height values 0.68, 1.39, and 1.24 eV were estimated to the BZT5, BZT15, and BZT25 thin films, respectively. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

PLZT(9/65/35) obtained by association between the Pechini method (ZT) and partial oxalate (PLZT) was prepared. The stoichiometric phase and monophasic (cubic) PLZT obtained by calcination did not occur after sintering. The sintering process, by using two stages, caused a liquid phase formation due to a PbO excess (5 and 10 wt%). Samples with high density (similar to 8 g/cm(3)) and optical transparency(similar to 12%) were obtained. However, an equilibrium between the excess of PbO of sample/atmosphere PbO leads to a segregated PbO phase on the boundaries of the microstructure. A diffusion of Zr, Ti and La ions from PLZT to PbO phase promoted a stoichiometric deviation of the matrix and modified the optical and dielectric characteristics. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. We report the synthesis of zirconia microneedles by the direct nucleation of particles inside a hexagonal swollen liquid crystal (SLC) (cell parameter a = 27 nm) prepared by mixing with the proper ratio, an aqueous solution of sulfated zirconium colloids, a cationic surfactant (cetylpyridinium chloride), cychlohexane as swelling agent with an oil over water ratio of 2.5 (vol.), and 1-pentanol as cosurfactant. After a slow crystallogenesis that can be enhanced by an initial induction step under moderate temperature, particles in the centimeter range can be obtained, with a very high shape ratio (over 100). These particles are made of crystalline octahydrate zirconium oxychloride containing pores of 20 nm diameter, aligned along the main axis of the liquid crystal, as the fingerprint of the oil cylinders present in the hexagonal phase. The morphology of these particles confirms that the shaping mechanism is based on true liquid crystal templating (TLCT). Further thermal treatment of these particles, after extraction from the SLC, leads to the crystallization of zirconia with the same needlelike morphology as the zirconium oxychloride.

The surface corrosion process associated with the hydrolysis of fluorozirconate glass, ZBLAN (53ZrF(4), 20BaF(2), 20NaF, 4LaF(2), 3AlF(3)) was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After a short exposure period (25 min) of the glass surface to deionized water the XPS data indicate an increase of the oxygen content accompanied by a decrease of fluorine concentration. The analysis of the chemical bonding structure identified the predominant surface reaction products as zirconium hydroxyfluoride and oxyfluoride species. The second most abundant glass component, bariumfluoride, remains almost unaffected by oxygen, while sodium fluoride is completely removed from the attacked surface region. The detected structural and compositional changes are related to the selective dissolution of the glass components leading to the formation of a new surface phase. This process is accompanied by a visible surface roughening caused by reprecipitated species, observed by SEM. The modification of the glass surface is responsible for an increase of the GISAXS intensity. The scattering was attributed to nanovoids formed at the surface region of the glass with an average size of 2.4 +/- 0.05 nm. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Pechini's method was used to prepare lead titanate zirconate with Zr/Ti ratio equal to 53/47. X-ray diffraction data revealed the presence of a rhombohedral phase, rich in zirconium, due to difference in carbonate stabilities, in PZT ceramics calcined at 600 degrees C. Infrared spectroscopy presented COO- bonds in the 1400 cm(-1) region, which disappeared after calcining at 700 degrees C. Seeds with rhombohedral (PZT 57/43) or tetragonal structure (PZT 45/55) were added to the precursor. The microstructure was differentially influenced by the nature of seed particles. Rhombohedral nuclei promoted preferential crystallization of lead zirconate. This heterogeneity directly reflected on values of k(p) and d(33). (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. Limited and Techna S.r.l. Bottom-up methods to obtain nanocrystals usually result in metastable phases, even in processes carried out at room temperature or under soft annealing conditions. However, stable phases, often associated with anisotropic shapes, are obtained in only a few special cases. In this paper we report on the synthesis of two well-studied oxides-titanium and zirconium oxide-in the nanometric range, by a novel route based on the decomposition of peroxide complexes of the two metals under hydrothermal soft conditions, obtaining metastable and stable phases in both cases through transformation. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis reveals the existence of typical defects relating to growth by the oriented attachment mechanism in the stable crystals. The results suggest that the mechanism is associated to the phase transformation of these structures.

The gap between the bulk materials and thin films can be filled with thick films suitably designed and appropriate processed. Thick films of complex system like lead-lanthanum-zirconium titanate (PLZT) is difficult to produce by simple solid-state reaction keeping compositional homogeneity and optimal grain size distribution. In the present work, PLZT thick films were fabricated by screen-printing technique from nanosized powders obtained through soft chemistry by polymeric precursor method. Thick film paste was obtained by mixing PLZT fine powders and organic vehicle. The upper and bottom electrodes based on Ag-Pd and functional component based on PLZT were screen-printed on alumina substrate and after that annealed in air atmosphere. The powder morphology, microstructure, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of 9.5/65/35 PLZT thick films were analysed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The influence of niobia addition on the phase formation and dielectric properties of Pb(Zr0.45Ti0.55)O-3 powder prepared from polymeric precursor was analyzed. The weight fraction and unit-cell volume of the tetragonal phase decreased, and the mass fraction of the rhombohedral phase increased, with increasing niobia concentration. The rhombohedral unit-cell volume increased up to 5 mol% of added Nb and then decreased. Small amounts of pyrochlore and tetragonal zirconia phases were observed in PZT powder with more than 10 mol% Nb. These results were interpreted as an indication that the Nb ion was substituted for the zirconium ion in the tetragonal phase. For sintered PZT samples at 1100 degrees C, no free-zirconia phase was observed. The dielectric constant increased with the niobia addition up to 5 mol% and decreased for higher concentrations. The Curie temperature decreased with niobia addition up to 10 mol% before the formation of pyrochlore phase. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work, zirconium titanate doped with 0. 1, 0.2, and 0.4 mole% of tin, chromium and vanadium was synthesized by the polymeric precursors method and characterized by thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The powder presented two mass losses attributed to the exit of water and to the pyrolysis of the organic material. The surface area reduction observed from 500 degrees C indicates the beginning of the sintering process. All the dopants led to changes in the lattice parameters and to the decrease of both crystallite size and particle size. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A powder mixture of BaO and TiO2, was mechanochemically treated in a planetary ball mill in an air atmosphere for up to 4 h, using zirconium oxide vial and zirconium oxide balls as the milling medium. Mechanochemical reaction leads to the gradual formation of BaTiO3 phase. Phase evolution during synthesis and changes in powder size and morphology were monitored by XRD, DSC, IR and TEM analysis and it was shown that the formation of BaTiO3 phase was initiated after 60 min. Extended time of milling directed to formation of higher amount of BaTiO3 perovskite phase. Barium titanate with good crystallinity was formed after 240 min sintering without pre-calcination step was performed at 1330 degrees C for 2 It within heating rate 10 degrees C/min. The thermoreversible sol-gel transition is well-known in biological and organic polymeric systems but has not been reported for inorganic systems. In this paper we put in evidence a thermoreversible sol-gel transition for zirconyl chloride aqueous solutions modified by sulfuric acid in the ratio 3:1 Zr:SO4. The synthesis conditions are detailed and a variety of experimental techniques (turbidimetry, dynamic rheology, and EXAFS) have been employed for investigating the thermal reversibility and the chemical structure of this new material. Turbidimetric measurements performed for solutions containing different concentrations of precursor have evidenced that the sol-gel transformation temperature increases from 50 to 80 degrees C as the concentration of zirconyl chloride decreases from 0.22 to 0.018 mol L-1. A more detailed study has been done for the sample with [Zr] = 0.156 mol L-1, in which the sol-gel-sol transformation has been repeated several times by a cyclic variation of the temperature. The mechanical properties of this sample, evaluated by measuring the storage and the loss moduli, show a change from liquid like to viscoelastic to elastic behavior during the sol-gel transition and vice versa during the gel-sol one. In situ EXAFS measurements performed at the Zr K-edge show that no change of the local order around Zr occurs during the sol-gel-sol transition, in agreement with the concept of physical gel formation. We have proposed for the structure of the precursor an inner core made of hydroxyl and oxo groups bridging together zirconium atoms surrounded in surface by complexing sulfate ligands, the sulfate groups act as a protective layer, playing a key role in the linking propagation among primary particles during sol-gel-sol transition.

Xerogels were prepared from zirconium, barium, aluminum, lanthanum and lithium acetates, corresponding to a Li containing ZBLA composition. The study of their thermal properties (DSC, TG/DTG, FT-IR) showed that they might be used as chemically stable precursors in the preparation of fluoride glasses. Hydrofluoric acid in solution was chosen as a mild fluorinating agent. This newly proposed technique of fluorinating allowed to obtain high quality ZBLALi glass which presents the advantage of higher thermal stability and homogeneity in comparison with the glass obtained using individual commercial fluorides.
