For sustainability considerations, the use of recycled aggregate in concrete has attracted many interests in the research community. One of the main concerns for using such concrete in buildings is its spalling in fire. This may be alleviated by adding steel fibers to form steel fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (SFRAC). This paper presents an experimental investigation into the compressive properties of SFRAC cylinders after exposure to elevated temperatures, including the compressive strength, Young's modulus (stiffness), stress-strain curve and energy absorption capacity (toughness). The effects of two parameters, namely steel fiber volume content (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%) and temperature (room temperature, 200 °C, 400 °C and 600 °C) on the compressive mechanical properties of concrete were investigated. The test results show that both compressive strength and stiffness of the concrete are significantly reduced after exposure to high temperatures. The addition of steel fibers is helpful in preventing spalling, and significantly improves the ductility and the cracking behavior of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) after exposure to high temperatures, which is favorable for the application of RAC in building construction.

There have been considerable developments in Merseyside over the last fifteen years with regards to the commercialisation of recycled demolition aggregate. Liverpool is an urban region that at the time was undergoing regeneration. This required the demolition of old infrastructure. Subsequent reconstruction required new construction materials. A project started in 2001 to investigate the economics, practicalities and technicalities of using recycled demolition aggregates in concrete precast products. It was estimated that if all six demolition contractors around Liverpool worked round the clock (i.e. assuming there was enough feed material) they would still have found it difficult to maintain the required supplies for a single precast factory. Investment in equipment was therefore required to guarantee supply and improve the quality of the recycled demolition aggregate. The market forces and the incentives/drivers for construction companies to adopt sustainable practises have encouraged investment of several million pounds to be made in new recycling plants and has resulted in ‘urban quarries’. This paper describes the developments in recycling of construction and demolition waste over the last decade in Merseyside and shows that recycling is not only sustainable but also profitable.

This paper uses the history of rubber extraction to explore competing attempts to control the forest environments of Assam and beyond in the second half of the nineteenth century. Forest communities faced rival efforts at environmental control from both European and Indian traders, as well as from various centres of authority within the Raj. Government attempts to regulate rubber collection were undermined by the weak authority of the Raj in these regions, leading to widespread smuggling. Partly in response to the disruptive influence of rubber traders on the frontier, the Raj began to restrict the presence of outsiders in tribal regions, which came to be understood as distinct areas outside British control. When rubber yields from the forests nearest the Brahmaputra fell in the wake of intensive exploitation, India's scientific foresters demanded and from 1870 obtained the ability to regulate the Assamese forests, blaming indigenous rubber tapping strategies for the declining yields and arguing that Indian rubber could be ‘equal [to] if not better' than Amazonian rubber if only tappers would change their practices. The knowledge of the scientific foresters was fundamentally flawed, however, and their efforts to establish a new type of tapping practice failed. By 1880, the government had largely abandoned attempts to regulate wild Indian rubber, though wild sources continued to dominate the supply of global rubber until after 1910.

A sociedade moderna encontra-se cada vez mais dependente dos combustíveis líquidos bem como de produtos derivados do petróleo. Em virtude do limitado tempo de vida das reservas naturais de petróleo, torna-se imperativo encontrar fontes alternativas de produção de hidrocarbonetos. A pirólise de resíduos de pneus e plásticos pode ser uma dessas possíveis fontes. Neste processo, o tratamento termoquímico implementado aos resíduos permite, não só, a valorização económica resultante da sua transformação em produtos de valor acrescido, como também a recuperação do conteúdo orgânico. O referido processo conduz à formação de hidrocarbonetos em fase líquida que podem ser utilizados pela indústria como combustíveis líquidos e/ou como matéria-prima. O presente trabalho tem como objectivo principal a definição das condições experimentais mais propícias à obtenção de combustíveis líquidos (maximização) resultantes da pirólise de misturas de resíduos de borracha de pneus e plásticos nomeadamente polietileno (PE), polipropileno (PP) e poliestireno (PS). Como instrumento de optimização das condições experimentais optou-se pela Metodologia dos Planos Factoriais de Ensaios. Os resultados experimentais obtidos mostram que as taxas de conversão em fase líquida podem atingir valores superiores a 80% (m/m) dependendo das condições experimentais utilizadas bem como do tipo e mistura de resíduos a pirolisar. Os rendimentos das fracções gasosa e sólida podem atingir valores na ordem dos 5% e 12% (respectivamente). Foi também estudado o efeito das condições experimentais nomeadamente a temperatura de reacção, pressão inicial, tempo de reacção e composição da mistura. Este estudo revelou que a maximização da fracção líquida é favorecida por uma temperatura de ensaio de 370ºC, uma pressão inicial de 0,48MPa e um tempo de ensaio de 15 minutos. Relativamente à composição da mistura, os melhores resultados foram obtidos com 30% (m/m) de resíduos de borracha de pneus (BP) associados a uma mistura de 70% (m/m) de resíduos de plásticos composta por 20% polietileno, 30% polipropileno e 20% poliestireno. Igualmente foi feita a caracterização física e química da matéria-prima e dos produtos obtidos pelo referido processo, bem como, o estudo da presença de diferentes substâncias potencialmente doadores de hidrogénio ao meio reaccional de forma a melhorar o rendimento líquido. Por último, foram realizados estudos cinéticos das reacções químicas de formação dos diferentes produtos aos resíduos de borracha de pneus (BP), misturas de resíduos de plástico (PE, PP e PS) e suas misturas. Ainda, foram ajustados os resultados obtidos pelo modelo teórico aos resultados experimentais, propostos mecanismos reaccionais de formação dos produtos e calculados os parâmetros cinéticos. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, a pirólise pode representar um papel significativo na valorização energética e orgânica destes resíduos apesar de, ainda, ser necessário o desenvolvimento de alguns aspectos tecnológicos de modo a tornar mais atraente a implementação desta tecnologia à escala industrial.

Previous research on the prediction of fiscal aggregates has shown evidence that simple autoregressive models often provide better forecasts of fiscal variables than multivariate specifications. We argue that the multivariate models considered by previous studies are small-scale, probably burdened by overparameterization, and not robust to structural changes. Bayesian Vector Autoregressions (BVARs), on the other hand, allow the information contained in a large data set to be summarized efficiently, and can also allow for time variation in both the coefficients and the volatilities. In this paper we explore the performance of BVARs with constant and drifting coefficients for forecasting key fiscal variables such as government revenues, expenditures, and interest payments on the outstanding debt. We focus on both point and density forecasting, as assessments of a country’s fiscal stability and overall credit risk should typically be based on the specification of a whole probability distribution for the future state of the economy. Using data from the US and the largest European countries, we show that both the adoption of a large system and the introduction of time variation help in forecasting, with the former playing a relatively more important role in point forecasting, and the latter being more important for density forecasting.

Glass fibre-reinforced plastics (GFRP), nowadays commonly used in the construction, transportation and automobile sectors, have been considered inherently difficult to recycle due to both the cross-linked nature of thermoset resins, which cannot be remoulded, and the complex composition of the composite itself, which includes glass fibres, polymer matrix and different types of inorganic fillers. Hence, to date, most of the thermoset based GFRP waste is being incinerated or landfilled leading to negative environmental impacts and additional costs to producers and suppliers. With an increasing awareness of environmental matters and the subsequent desire to save resources, recycling would convert an expensive waste disposal into a profitable reusable material. In this study, the effect of the incorporation of mechanically recycled GFRP pultrusion wastes on flexural and compressive behaviour of polyester polymer mortars (PM) was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of GFRP recyclates (0%, 4%, 8% and 12%, w/w), with distinct size grades (coarse fibrous mixture and fine powdered mixture), were incorporated into polyester PM as sand aggregates and filler replacements. The effect of the incorporation of a silane coupling agent was also assessed. Experimental results revealed that GFRP waste filled polymer mortars show improved mechanical behaviour over unmodified polyester based mortars, thus indicating the feasibility of GFRP waste reuse as raw material in concrete-polymer composites.

In this paper the adequacy and the benefit of incorporating glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) waste materials into polyester based mortars, as sand aggregates and filler replacements, are assessed. Different weight contents of mechanically recycled GFRP wastes with two particle size grades are included in the formulation of new materials. In all formulations, a polyester resin matrix was modified with a silane coupling agent in order to improve binder-aggregates interfaces. The added value of the recycling solution was assessed by means of both flexural and compressive strengths of GFRP admixed mortars with regard to those of the unmodified polymer mortars. Planning of experiments and data treatment were performed by means of full factorial design and through appropriate statistical tools based on analyses of variance (ANOVA). Results show that the partial replacement of sand aggregates by either type of GFRP recyclates improves the mechanical performance of resultant polymer mortars. In the case of trial formulations modified with the coarser waste mix, the best results are achieved with 8% waste weight content, while for fine waste based polymer mortars, 4% in weight of waste content leads to the higher increases on mechanical strengths. This study clearly identifies a promising waste management solution for GFRP waste materials by developing a cost-effective end-use application for the recyclates, thus contributing to a more sustainable fibre-reinforced polymer composites industry.

Presently, most of the GFRP waste is landfilled leading to negative environmental impacts and supplementary added costs. With an increasing awareness of environmental matters and the subsequent desire to save resources, recycling would convert an expensive waste disposal into a profitable reusable material. There are several methods to recycle GFR thermostable materials: (a) incineration, with partial energy recovery due to the heat generated during organic part combustion; (b) thermal and/or chemical recycling, such as solvolysis, pyrolisis and similar thermal decomposition processes, with glass fibre recovering; and (c) mechanical recycling or size reduction, in which the material is subjected to a milling process in order to obtain a specific grain size that makes the material suitable as reinforcement in new formulations. This last method has important advantages over the previous ones: there is no atmospheric pollution by gas emission, a much simpler equipment is required as compared with ovens necessary for thermal recycling processes, and does not require the use of chemical solvents with subsequent environmental impacts. In this study the effect of incorporation of recycled GFRP waste materials, obtained by means of milling processes, on mechanical behavior of polyester polymer mortars was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of recycled GFRP waste materials, with distinct size gradings, were incorporated into polyester polymer mortars as sand aggregates and filler replacements. The effect of GFRP waste treatment with silane coupling agent was also assessed. Design of experiments and data treatment were accomplish by means of factorial design and analysis of variance ANOVA. The use of factorial experiment design, instead of the one-factor-at-a-time method is efficient at allowing the evaluation of the effects and possible interactions of the different material factors involved. Experimental results were promising toward the recyclability of GFRP waste materials as aggregates and filler replacements for polymer mortar, with significant gain of mechanical properties with regard to non-modified polymer mortars.

In this work, the effect of incorporation of recycled glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP) waste materials, obtained by means of shredding and milling processes, on mechanical behavior of polyester polymer mortar (PM) materials was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of GFRP recyclates (between 4% up to 12% in mass), were incorporated into polyester PM materials as sand aggregates and filler replacements. The effect of silane coupling agent addition to resin binder was also evaluated. Applied waste material was proceeding from the shredding of the leftovers resultant from the cutting and assembly processes of GFRP pultrusion profiles. Currently, these leftovers, jointly with unfinished products and scrap resulting from pultrusion manufacturing process, are landfilled, with supplementary added costs. Thus, besides the evident environmental benefits, a viable and feasible solution for these wastes would also conduct to significant economic advantages. Design of experiments and data treatment were accomplish by means of full factorial design approach and analysis of variance ANOVA. Experimental results were promising toward the recyclability of GFRP waste materials as aggregates and reinforcement for PM materials, with significant improvements on mechanical properties with regard to non-modified formulations.
