Strontium isotopic compositions of acetic acid (HOAc) leachate fractions of eight manganese oxide deposits from the modern seafloor, and of twenty-one buried manganese nodules from Cretaceous to Recent sediments in DSDP/ODP cores were measured. ratios of HOAc leachates in all modern seafloor manganese oxides of various origins are identical with present seawater. The ratios of the HOAc leachates of buried nodules from DSDP/ODP cores are significantly lower than those of nodules from the modern seafloor and are mostly identical with coeval seawater values estimated from the age of associated sediments. It is suggested that the buried nodules in DSDP/ODP cores are not artifacts transported from the present seafloor during the drilling process, but are in situ fossil deposits from the past deep-sea floor during Cretaceous to Quaternary periods. The formation of deep-sea fossil nodules prior to the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) indicates that the circulation of oxygenated deep seawaters have activately deposited manganese oxides since the Eocene Epoch, or earlier.

Recrystallization processes in marine sediments can alter the extent to which biogenic calcite composition serves as a proxy of oceanic chemical and isotopic history. Models of calcite recrystallization developed to date have resulted in significant insights into these processes, but are not completely adequate to describe the conditions of recrystallization. Marine sediments frequently have concentration gradients in interstitial dissolved calcium, magnesium, and strontium which have probably evolved during sediment accumulation. Realistic, albeit simplified, models of the temporal evolution of interstitial water profiles of Ca, Mg, and Sr were used with several patterns of recrystallization rate variation to predict the composition of recrystallized inorganic calcite. Comparison of predictions with measured Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios in severely altered calcite samples from several Deep Sea Drilling Project sites demonstrates that models incorporating temporal variation in interstitial water composition more successfully predict observed calcite compositions than do models which rely solely on present-day interstitial water chemistry. Temporal changes in interstitial composition are particularly important in interpreting Mg/Ca ratios in conjunction with Sr/Ca ratios. Estimates of Mg distribution coefficients from previous observations in marine sediments, much lower than those in laboratory studies of inorganic calcite, are confirmed by these results. Evaluation of the effects of diagenetic alteration of biogenic calcium carbonate sediment must be a site-specific process, taking into account accumulation history, present interstitial chemistry and its variation in the past, and sample depths and ages.

Pelagic clay of the east-central Pacific province is shown to be a mixture of three primary detrital components, reflecting continental source areas in Asia, North America, and Central and South America. Relative contributions from each source area are a function of geography, and this distribution appears to have remained constant over the past five million years, despite changing flux rates. A Q-mode factor analysis of downcore records for Pb, Sr, and Nd isotopes identified three factors that account for 98% of the total variance. These factors represent the radiogenic isotopic signatures of 1) late Cenozoic Asian dust, which dominates in the central North Pacific; 2) North American continental hemipelagic/eolian sources, restricted mainly to the easternmost North Pacific at ~30 N latitude; and 3) Central and South American sources, restricted to areas east of ~100 W longitude. South of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (~6 N), the Asian dust signature diminishes abruptly. We conclude that late Cenozoic Asian dust sources can be isotopically differentiated downcore from both North American and South and Central American sources in the eastcentral Pacific. This approach has a utility for identifying changes in long-term Cenozoic atmospheric circulation patterns.

<p>La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3- (LSGM), a promising electrolyte material for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells, can be sintered to a fully dense state by a flash-sintering technique. In this work, LSGM is sintered by the current-limiting flash-sintering process at 690C under an electric field of 100 V cm-1, in comparison with up to 1400C or even higher temperature in conventional furnace sintering. The resultant LSGM samples are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The SEM images exhibit well-densified microstructures while XRD results show that the perovskite structure after flash-sintering does not changed. EIS results show that the conductivity of LSGM sintered by the current-limiting flash-sintering process increases with sintering current density value. The conductivity of samples sintered at 120 mA mm-2 reaches 0.049 cm-1 at 800C, which is approximate to the value of conventional sintered LSGM samples at 1400C. Additionally, the flash-sintering process is interpreted by Joule heating theory. Therefore, the current-limiting flash-sintering technique is proved to be an energy-efficient and eligible approach for the densification of LSGM and other materials requiring high sintering temperature.</p>

<p>In this work, Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO3- -Ce0.9Pr0.1O2- (PSFO-CPO) nanofibers were synthesized by a one-step electrospin technique for use in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) applications. PSFO-CPO nanofibers were produced with a diameter of about 100nm and lengths exceeding tens of microns. The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) matches with standard GDC electrolytes and the resulting conductivity also satisfies the needs of IT-SOFCs cathodes. EIS analysis of the nanofiber structured electrode gives a polarization resistance of 0.072cm2 at 800C, smaller than that from the powdered cathode with the same composition. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the well-constructed microstructure of the nanofiber structured cathode, which promotes surface oxygen diffusion and charge transfer processes. All the results imply that the one-step electrospin method is a facile and practical way of improving the cathode properties and that PSFO-CPO is a promising cathode material for IT-SOFCs.</p>

<p>Cobalt-free composite cathodes consisting of Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO 3- -xCe0.9Pr0.1O 2- (PSFO-xCPO, x = 0-50 wt%) have been synthesized using a one-pot method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermal expansion coefficient, conductivity, and polarization resistance (R P ) have been used to characterize the PSFO-xCPO cathodes. Furthermore the discharge performance of the Ni-SSZ/SSZ/GDC/PSFO-xCPO cells has been measured. The experimental results indicate that the PSFO-xCPO composite materials fully consist of PSFO and CPO phases and posses a porous microstructure. The conductivity of PSFO-xCPO decreases with the increase of CPO content, but R P of PSFO-40CPO shows the smallest value amongst all the samples. The power density of single cells with a PSFO-40CPO composite cathode is significantly improved compared with that of the PSFO cathode, exhibiting 0.43, 0.75, 1.08 and 1.30 W cm-2 at 650, 700, 750 and 800 C, respectively. In addition, single cells with the PSFO-40CPO composite cathode show a stable performance with no obvious degradation over 100 h when operating at 750 C.</p>

The objective of this research is to determine the molecular structure of the mineral hinsdalite using vibrational spectroscopy. The mineral hinsdalite (Pb,Sr)Al3(PO4,SO4)2(OH)6 is a hydroxy phosphate-sulphate mineral belonging to the beudantite subgroup of alunites. The mineral is interesting because it contains two oxyanions, phosphate and sulphate, which is unusual. The formation of hinsdalite offers a mechanism for the removal of phosphate from the environment. The mineral has been characterised by Raman spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The spectra are then related to the molecular structure of the mineral. Bands at various wavenumbers are assigned to the different vibrational modes of hinsdalite, which were then associated to the molecular structure of the mineral. Bands were primarily assigned to phosphate and sulphate stretching and bending modes. The Raman spectrum is characterised by an intense sharp band at 982 cm-1 with a component band at 997 cm-1 assigned to the 1 (PO4)3- symmetric stretching modes. Two symmetric stretching modes for both phosphate and sulphate supported the concept of non-equivalent phosphate and sulphate units in the mineral structure. Bands in the OH stretching region enabled hydrogen bond distances to be calculated. Hinsdalite is characterised by disordered phosphate/sulphate tetrahedra and non-equivalent phosphate units are observed in the vibrational spectrum of hinsdalite.

Superconducting thick films of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy (Bi-2212) on single-crystalline (100) MgO substrates have been prepared using a doctor-blade technique and a partial-melt process. It is found that the phase composition and the amount of Ag addition to the paste affect the structure and superconducting properties of the partially melted thick films. The optimum heat treatment schedule for obtaining high Jc has been determined for each paste. The heat treatment ensures attainment of high purity for the crystalline Bi-2212 phase and high orientation of Bi-2212 crystals, in which the c-axis is perpendicular to the substrate. The highest Tc, obtained by resistivity measurement, is 92.2 K. The best value for Jct (transport) of these thick films, measured at 77 K in self-field, is 8 10 3 Acm -2.

The microstructure of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-oxide (BSCCO) thick films on alumina substrates has been characterized using a combination of X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy of sections across the film/substrate interface and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. A reaction layer formed between the BSCCO films and the alumina substrates. This chemical interaction is largely responsible for off-stoichiometry of the films and is more significant after partial melting of the films. A new phase with fee structure, lattice parameter a = 2.45 nm and approximate composition Al3Sr2CaBi2CuOx has been identified as reaction product between BSCCO and Al2O3.

Some minerals are colloidal and show no X-ray diffraction patterns. Vibrational spectroscopy offers one of the few methods for the assessment of the structure of these types of mineral. Among this group of minerals is kemmlitzite (Sr,Ce)Al3(AsO4)(SO4)(OH)6. The objective of this research is to determine the molecular structure of the mineral kemmlitzite using vibrational spectroscopy. Raman microscopy offers a useful method for the analysis of such colloidal minerals. Raman and infrared bands are attributed to the AsO43- , SO42- and water stretching vibrations. The Raman spectrum is dominated by a very intense sharp band at 984 cm-1 assigned to the SO42- symmetric stretching mode. Raman bands at 690, 772 and 825 cm-1 may be assigned to the AsO43- antisymmetric and symmetric stretching modes. Raman bands observed at 432 and 465 cm-1 are attributable to the doubly degenerate 2 (SO4)2- bending mode. Vibrational spectroscopy is important in the assessment of the molecular structure of the kemmlitzite, especially when the mineral is non-diffracting or poorly diffracting.

SUMMARY: Recently, the use of the pharmacological agent strontium ranelate has come to prominence for the treatment of osteoporosis. While much investigation is focused on preventing disease progression, here we fabricate strontium-containing scaffolds and show that they enhance bone defect healing in the femurs of rats induced by ovariectomy. INTRODUCTION: Recently, the use of the pharmacological agent strontium ranelate has come to prominence for the treatment of osteoporosis due to its ability to prevent bone loss in osteoporotic patients. Although much emphasis has been placed on using pharmacological agents for the prevention of disease, much less attention has been placed on the construction of biomaterials following osteoporotic-related fracture. The aim of the present study was to incorporate bioactive strontium (Sr) trace element into mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) scaffolds and to investigate their in vivo efficacy for bone defect healing in the femurs of rats induced by ovariectomy. METHODS: In total, 30 animals were divided into five groups as follows: (1) empty defect (control), (2) empty defects with estrogen replacement therapy, (3) defects filled with MBG scaffolds alone, (4) defects filled with MBG + estrogen replacement therapy, and (5) defects filled with strontium-incorporated mesopore-bioglass (Sr-MBG) scaffolds. RESULTS: The two groups demonstrating the highest levels of new bone formation were the defects treated with MBG + estrogen replacement therapy and the defects receiving Sr-MBG scaffolds as assessed by -CT and histological analysis. Furthermore, Sr scaffolds had a reduced number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive cells when compared to other modalities. CONCLUSION: The results from the present study demonstrate that the local release of Sr from bone scaffolds may improve fracture repair. Future large animal models are necessary to investigate the future relationship of Sr incorporation into biomaterials.

The Archean Hollandaire volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is a felsicsiliciclastic VMS deposit located in the Murchison Domain of the Youanmi Terrane, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia. It is hosted in a succession of turbidites, mudstones and coherent rhyodacite sills and has been metamorphosed to upper greenschist/lower amphibolite facies and includes a pervasive S1 deformational fabric. The coherent rhyodacitic sills are interpreted as syndepositional based on geochemical similarities with well-known VMS-associated felsic rocks and similar foliations to the metasediments. We offer several explanations for the absence of textural evidence (e.g. breccias) for syn-depositional origins: 1) the subaqueous sediments were dehydrated by long-lived magmatism such that no pore-water remained to drive quench fragmentation; 2) pore-space occlusion by burial and/or, 3) alteration overprinting and obscuring of primary breccias at contact margins. Mineralisation occurs by sub-seafloor replacement of original host rocks in two ore bodies, Hollandaire Main (~125 x >500 m and ~8 m thick) and Hollandaire West (~100 x 470 m and ~5 m thick), and occurs in three main textural styles, massive sulfides, which are exclusively hosted in turbidites and mudstones, and stringer and disseminated sulfides, which are also hosted in coherent rhyodacite. Most sulfides have textures consistent with remobilisation and recrystallisation. Hydrothermal metamorphism has altered the hangingwall and footwall to similar degrees, with significant gains in Mg, Mn and K and losses in Na, Ca and Sr. Garnet and staurolite porphyryoblasts also exhibit a footprint around mineralisation, extending up to 30 m both above and below the ore zone. High precision thermal ionisation mass spectrometry of zircons extracted from the coherent rhyodacite yield an age of 2759.5 0.9 Ma, which along with geochemical comparisons, places the succession within the 27602735 Ma Greensleeves Formation of the Polelle Group of the Murchison Supergroup. Geochemical and geochronological evidence link the coherent rhyodacite sills to the Peter Well Granodiorite pluton ~2 km to the W, which acted as the heat engine driving hydrothermal circulation during VMS mineralisation. This study highlights the importance of both: detailed physical volcanological studies from which an accurate assessment of timing relationships, particularly the possibility of intrusions dismembering ore horizons, can be made; and identifying synvolcanic plutons and other similar suites, for VMS exploration targets in the Youanmi Terrane and worldwide.

In order to explore the anticancer effect associated with the thiazolidinone framework, several 2-(5-((5-(4-chlorophenyl)furan-2-yl)methylene)-4-oxo-2-thioxothiazolidin-3-yl)acetic acid derivatives 5(a-1) were synthesized. Variation in the functional group at C-terminal of the thiazolidinone led to set of compounds bearing amide moiety. Their chemical structures were confirmed by H-1 NMR, IR and Mass Spectra analysis. These thiazolidinone compounds containing furan moiety exhibits moderate to strong antiproliferative activity in a cell cycle stage-dependent and dose dependent manner in two different human leukemia cell lines. The importance of the electron donating groups on thiazolidinone moiety was confirmed by MTT and Trypan blue assays and it was concluded that the 4th position of the substituted aryl ring plays a dominant role for its anticancer property. Among the synthesized compounds, 5e and 5f have shown potent anticancer activity on both the cell lines tested. To rationalize the role of electron donating group in the induction of cytotoxicity we have chosen two molecules (5e and 5k) having different electron donating group at different positions. LDH assay, Flow cytometric analysis and DNA fragmentation suggest that 5e is more cytotoxic and able to induce the apoptosis. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Quasi-two-dimensional oxides of the La,+,Sr,+,Mn04 system, possessing the KZNiF4 structure, show no evidence for ferromagnetic ordering in contrast to the corresponding three-dimensional La,+.Sr,MnO~ perovskites. Instead, there is an increasing tendency toward antiferromagnetic ordering with mcreasmg x m La,+,Sr,,, MnOp. Furthermore, these oxides are relatively high-resistivity materials over the entire compositional range. Substitution of Ba for Sr in La&r,.5Mn04 decreases the ferromagnetic interaction. Increasing the number of perovskite layers in SrO (La,-,Sr,MnO& causes an increase in electrical conductivity as well as ferromagnetic interaction. The oxide becomes a highly conducting ferromagnet when n 2 2.
