1. Winter temperatures differ markedly on the Canadian prairies compared with Denmark. Between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2002, average weekly and monthly temperatures did not drop below 0 °C in the vicinity of Silkeborg, Denmark. Over this same time, weekly average temperatures near Calgary, Alberta, Canada, often dropped below -10 °C for 3-5 weeks and the average monthly temperature was below 0 °C for 2-4 months. Accordingly, winter ice conditions in shallow lakes in Canada and Denmark differed considerably. 2. To assess the implications of winter climate for lake biotic structure and function we compared a number of variables that describe the chemistry and biology of shallow Canadian and Danish lakes that had been chosen to have similar morphometries. 3. The Danish lakes had a fourfold higher ratio of chlorophyll-a: total phosphorus (TP). Zooplankton : phytoplankton carbon was related to TP and fish abundance in Danish lakes but not in Canadian lakes. There was no significant difference in the ratio log total zooplankton biomass : log TP and the Canadian lakes had a significantly higher proportion of cladocerans that were Daphnia. These differences correspond well with the fact that the Danish lakes have more abundant and diverse fish communities than the Canadian lakes. 4. Our results suggest that severe Canadian winters lead to anoxia under ice and more depauperate fish communities, and stronger zooplankton control on phytoplankton in shallow prairie lakes compared with shallow Danish lakes. If climate change leads to warmer winters and a shorter duration of ice cover, we predict that shallow Canadian prairie lakes will experience increased survivorship of planktivores and stronger control of zooplankton. This, in turn, might decrease zooplankton control on phytoplankton, leading to 'greener' lakes on the Canadian prairies.

Holes 1209A and 1211A on Southern High, Shatsky Rise contain expanded, nearly continuous records of carbonate-rich sediment deposited in deep water of the equatorial Pacific Ocean during the Paleocene and Eocene. In this study, we document intervals of carbonate dissolution in these records by examining temporal changes in four parameters: carbonate content, coarse size fraction (>38 µm), benthic foraminiferal abundance, and planktonic foraminiferal fragmentation ratio. Carbonate content is not a sensitive indicator of carbonate dissolution in the studied sections, although rare intervals of low carbonate may reflect times of relatively high dissolution. The proportion of coarse size fraction does not accurately record carbonate dissolution either because the relative abundance of nannofossils largely determines the grain-size distribution. Benthic abundance and fragmentation covary (r**2 = 0.77) and are probably the best indicators for carbonate dissolution. For both holes, records of these parameters indicate two episodes of prominent dissolution. The first of these occurs in the upper Paleocene (~59-58 Ma) and the second in the middle to upper Eocene (~45-33.7 Ma). Other intervals of enhanced carbonate dissolution are located in the upper Paleocene (~56 Ma) and in the upper lower Eocene (~51 Ma). Enhanced preservation of planktonic foraminiferal assemblages marks the start of both the Paleocene and Eocene epochs.

Snow cover has dramatic effects on the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems in winter. In the tundra, the subnivean space is the primary habitat of wintering small mammals and may be critical for their survival and reproduction. We have investigated the effects of snow cover and habitat features on the distributions of collared lemming (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) and brown lemming (Lemmus trimucronatus) winter nests, as well as on their probabilities of reproduction and predation by stoats (Mustela erminea) and arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus). We sampled 193 lemming winter nests and measured habitat features at all of these nests and at random sites at two spatial scales. We also monitored overwinter ground temperature at a subsample of nest and random sites. Our results demonstrate that nests were primarily located in areas with high micro-topography heterogeneity, steep slopes, deep snow cover providing thermal protection (reduced daily temperature fluctuations) and a high abundance of mosses. The probability of reproduction increased in collared lemming nests at low elevation and in brown lemming nests with high availability of some graminoid species. The probability of predation by stoats was density dependent and was higher in nests used by collared lemmings. Snow cover did not affect the probability of predation of lemming nests by stoats, but deep snow cover limited predation attempts by arctic foxes. We conclude that snow cover plays a key role in the spatial structure of wintering lemming populations and potentially in their population dynamics in the Arctic.

Leg 190 was the first of a two-leg program across the Nankai accretionary prism and Trough, offshore Japan, aiming to evaluate existing models for prism evolution and to constrain syntectonic sedimentation, deformation styles, mechanical properties, and prism hydrology (Moore, Taira, Klaus, et al., 2001; Moore et al., 2001). More than 400 volcanic ash and siliceous claystone (altered ash) layers were penetrated and sampled during drilling of the six sites from two transects across the accretionary prism (Sites 1173-1178). In sites from the subducting Shikoku Basin (Sites 1173 and 1177) and in the trench axis (Site 1174), recognition of ash layers and diagenetically altered ashes was initially important in defining major lithostratigraphic units. However, it is clear that understanding the diagenesis of the volcanic ashes has considerable implications for prism evolution, mechanical properties, prism hydrology, geochemistry, and fluid flow in the accretionary prism and associated subducting sediments (cf. Masuda et al., 1996, doi 10.1346/CCMN.1996.0440402). Particle size, chemical composition, temperature, depth of burial, and time are all thought to be factors that may affect volcanic ash diagenesis and preservation (Kuramoto et al., 1992, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.127128-2.235.1992; Underwood et al., 1993, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.131.137.1993). The overall aim of this research is to evaluate factors influencing volcanic ash diagenesis in the Nankai Trough area. This data report presents just the results of the sedimentological and petrographic analysis of the volcanic ashes and siliceous claystones from Sites 1173, 1174, and 1177. It is anticipated that when the results of additional geochemical analysis of these lithologies is available a more meaningful evaluation of factors influencing volcanic ash alteration will be possible.

Biochemical composition, feeding and oxygen uptake rate of mass planktic copepod Calanoides carinatus were studied off the coast of Namibia in January 1986. Population of this species in the area had two parts: the surface group inhabiting the 0-100 m layer and the deep part inhabiting depths greater than 200 m. Individuals in the surface and deep parts of the population differed in food content of guts, lipid content of bodies, oxygen uptake rate and behavior. Differences in biochemical composition and rate of physiological processes indicate that individuals in the deep part of the population are in diapause. Nature of changes in biochemical composition of C. carinatus in surface and deep waters in relation to life cycle characteristics in upwelling waters are discussed.

Sites 815 and 817 were drilled near the Townsville Trough during Leg 133 of the Ocean Drilling Program. The physical properties, compressional-wave velocity, and consolidation characteristics indicate that the periplatform carbonate sediments maintain more water content and lower compressional velocity near the Queensland Plateau than the clayey hemipelagic sediments, which have a clay content of up to 60%. Bulk density, void ratio or porosity, water content, and compressional-wave velocity are shown to have a linear relationship with burial depth. Between 3.5 and 5 Ma (about 100-500 mbsf), these physical properties maintained a constant rate vs. the depth in core because of the fast sedimentation-rate effect at Site 815. However, compressionalwave velocity still increases downward in this section. The clay content in this section causes an increase of bulk modulus and compaction effect. At Site 817, scarce terrigenous mud content and abundant carbonate content (88%-97%) cause a straight line relationship between physical properties and burial depth. During the consolidation test, we show that dominant micritic particles may cause faster acoustic velocity than sediments composed mainly of coccoliths. The bulk modulus ratio increasing rate in the clay-rich carbonate sediments is almost 4.5 times higher than in the clay-free periplatform carbonate sediments.

A sediment core from the Lofoten Contourite Drift on the continental slope off Northern Norway, proximal to the former Vestfjorden-Trsnadjupet Ice Stream, details the development, variability and decline of marine margins of the northwestern Fennoscandian Ice Sheet during the time interval 25.3-14 cal ka BP, including the Last Glacial Maximum and onset of the deglaciation based on high-resolution IRD records. From the core interval between 25.3 and 17.7 cal ka BP we report data points with a mean time step of 10 years, between 17.7 cal ka BP and the Holocene time steps are typically 50 years. The core is divided into 7 informal ice-rafted debris (IRD) zones based on the variations in IRD including 7 major IRD maxima (A-G), inferred to represent periods of high iceberg production. Petrological identification reveals dominance of crystalline IRD (monocrystalline, plutonic and metamorphic rock fragments) accounting for 75-80% of total IRD assemblages, while sedimentary fragments generally account for 15-20%. The crystalline fragments (including eclogite and mangerite from a nearby terrestrial source) increase across the IRD peaks while the sedimentary fragments remain constant. This points to the importance of erosional products from icebergs originating from fast-flowing paleo-ice streams including the Vestfjorden-Trsnadjupet Ice Stream draining from the Fennoscandian mainland during the IRD maxima periods. Increased temperature of the adjacent surface water masses was probably an important external forcing factor on the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet behavior because some IRD maxima and plumite deposition from meltwater plumes post-date periods of increased sea surface temperatures. The peak IRD depositions occur in centennial and millennial time cycles (~200, 1030 and 3900 year) indicating some external forcing by solar variation. Both mechanisms could explain the observed synchronous instability of the northwestern Fennoscandian Ice Sheet to other European Ice Sheets.

Based on the data of synchronous observations of hydrophysical and biogeochemical parameters in the near-mouth and shallow-water areas of the northern Caspian in 2000-2001, the scale of spatiotemporal variability in the following characteristics of the water-bottom system was estimated (1) flow velocity and direction within vortex structures formed by the combined effect of wind, discharge current, and the presence of higher aquatic plants; (2) dependence of the spatial distribution of the content and composition of suspended particulate matter on the hydrodynamic regime of waters and development of phytoplankton; (3) variations in the grain-size, petrographic, mineralogical, and chemical compositions of the upper layer of bottom sediments at several sites in the northern Caspian related to the particular local combination of dominant natural processes; and (4) limits of variability in the group composition of humus compounds in bottom sediments. The acquired data are helpful in estimating the geochemical consequences of a sea level rise and during the planning of preventive environmental protection measures in view of future oil and gas recovery in this region.

Summary: Serum 25(OH)D levels decline without sunlight exposure. We studied 120 expeditioners to Antarctica to determine the skeletal and hormonal responses to sunlight deprivation. With emerging vitamin D insufficiency, serum calcium decreased, PTH increased, and bone loss at the proximal femur was observed. Baseline serum 25(OH)D levels >100 nmol/L prevented vitamin D insufficiency. Introduction: Vitamin D stores deplete without adequate sunlight exposure unless supplementation is provided. We studied 120 healthy adults who spent a year in Antarctica as a model for sunlight deprivation to define the timing and magnitude of the skeletal and hormonal responses to emerging vitamin D insufficiency. Methods: Fasting blood samples were assessed at baseline, 6 and 12 months for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), osteocalcin (OC), bone formation (P1NP) and resorption (CTx), PTH and calcium. Lumbar spine and proximal femur BMD was measured using DXA. Differences over time were determined using repeated measures ANOVA. Percent changes were expressed as (Delta value/(value A +value B)/2)x100. Relationships between outcome measures were determined using Spearman's correlations. Results: Vitamin D insufficiency (<50 nmol/L) was observed in 85% of expeditioners by 6 months when serum calcium decreased and PTH increased (p<0.01). By 12 months, OC increased by 7.4±3.0% (p<0.05), and BMD decreased by 1.0±2.0% at the total proximal femur (p<0.05). For those with vitamin D sufficiency at baseline (>50 nmol/L), sunlight deprivation produced vitamin D insufficiency within 4 months unless baseline values were >100 nmol/L. Conclusion: Supplementation may be necessary for expeditioners with limited access to UV light.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 185, we studied progressive changes of microfabrics of unconsolidated pelagic and hemipelagic sediments in Holes 1149A and 1149B in the northwest Pacific at 5818 m water depth. We paid particular attention to the early consolidation and diagenetic processes without tectonic deformation before the Pacific plate subduction at the Izu-Bonin Trench. Shape, size, and arrangement of pores were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and were compared to anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data. The microfabric in Unit I is nondirectional fabric and is characterized by large peds of ~10-100 µm diameter, which are made up of clay platelets (mainly illite) and siliceous biogenic fragments. They are ovoid in shape and are mechanically packed by benthic animals. Porosity decreases from 0 to 60 meters below seafloor (mbsf) in Unit I (from 60% to 50%) in association with macropore size decreases. The microfabric of coarser grain particles other than clay in Unit II is characterized by horizontal preferred orientation because of depositional processes in Subunit IIA and burial compaction in Subunit IIB. On the other hand, small peds, which are probably made of fragments of fecal pellets and are composed of smectite and illite (3-30 µm diameter), are characterized by random orientation of clay platelets. The clay platelets in the small peds in Subunit IIA are in low-angle edge-to-face (EF) or face-to-face (FF) contact. These peds are electrostatically connected by long-chained clay platelets, which are interconnected by high-angle EF contact. Breaking of these long chains by overburden pressure diminishes the macropores, and the clay platelets in the peds become FF in contact, resulting in decreases in the volume of the micropores between clay platelets. Thus, porosity in Subunits IIA and IIB decreases remarkably downward. The AMS indicates random fabric and horizontal preferred orientation fabric in Units I and II, respectively. This result corresponds to that of SEM microfabric observations. In Subunit IIB, pressure solutions around radiolarian tests and clinoptilolite veins with normal displacement sense are seen distinctively below ~170 mbsf, probably in correspondence to the transition zone from opal-A to opal-CT.

The organic geochemistry of Sites 1108 and 1109 of the Woodlark Basin, offshore Papua New Guinea, was studied to determine whether thermally mature hydrocarbons were present in the penetrated section and, if present, whether they are genetically related to the penetrated "coaly" interval. Both the organic carbon and pyrolysis data indicate that there is no significant hydrocarbon source-rock potential at Site 1108. The hydrocarbons encountered during drilling appear to be indigenous and not migrated products or contaminants. In contrast, the coaly interval at Site 1109 contains zones with significant hydrocarbon-generation potential. Several independent lines of evidence indicate that the coaly sequence encountered at Site 1109 is thermally immature. The Site 1108 methane stable-carbon isotope composition does not display a clear trend with depth as would be expected if it was solely reflecting a maturation profile. The measured isotopic composition of methane has most probably been altered by fractionation during sample handling and storage. This fractionation would result in isotopically heavier values than would be obtained on free gas. The organic geochemical data gathered indicate that Site 1108 can be safely revisited and that the organic-rich sediments encountered at Site 1109 were not the source of the gas encountered at Site 1108.

Tholeiitic basalts were obtained from basaltic basement ranging in age from 6 to 17 m.y. on IPOD/DSDP Leg 63. The main rock types encountered at all sites but 473 are basaltic pillow lavas. Although many of these pillow basalts are highly or moderately altered, fresh glass is usually present. At Site 473, we recovered coarse-grained, massive basalts; no clearly defined pillowed forms were observed. Phenocrysts or microphenocrysts present in the Leg 63 basalts are Plagioclase and clinopyroxene at Site 469; olivine, Plagioclase, and spinel at Site 470; and olivine, Plagioclase, and clinopyroxene at Sites 472 and 473. Olivines of the basalts from Holes 470A and 472 (Fo85-88) are generally more magnesian than those of the Hole 473 basalts (Fo77-81). Also, plagioclases of Holes 470A and 472 basalts (An70-85) are generally more calcic than those of Holes 469 and 473 basalts (An66-72). Geochemical study of the Leg 63 basalts indicates that in all cases they are large-ion-lithophile (LIL) element depleted tholeiites like typical abyssal tholeiites. In particular, they are very similar in composition to those described from the eastern Pacific, although the degree of iron enrichment found in the Leg 63 basalts is not as extensive as in basalts from the Galapagos spreading center. Hence, the geochemical evidence of the Leg 63 basalts is compatible with their formation at a spreading center. Compositional variations in Leg 63 basalts from any single drill hole is small. Major and trace element data indicate that the samples from Holes 469 and 473 are more fractionated in chemical composition than are the samples from Holes 470A and 472; this compositional variation may be largely ascribed to differences in the extent of shallow-level fractional crystallization of similar parental magma. The Hole 472 samples, however, show a LIL element character distinct from the other Leg 63 samples.
