We report new radio continuum and 21 cm HI observations using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) of the group Holmberg 124 ( Ho 124) comprising four late-type galaxies, namely NGC 2820, Mrk 108, NGC 2814 and NGC 2805. The three galaxies, NGC 2820, Mrk 108 and NGC 2814 which are closely located in the sky plane have clearly undergone tidal interactions as seen from the various morphological tidal signatures and debris. Moreover we note various features in the group members which we believe might be due to ram pressure. In this paper, we describe four interesting results emerging from our observations: a) detection of the tidal radio continuum bridge at 330 MHz connecting the galaxies NGC 2820+ Mrk 108 with NGC 2814. The radio bridge was discovered at 1465 MHz by van der Hulst & Hummel ( 1985, A& A, 150, 17). We find that the bridge has a fairly steep spectrum with a spectral index alpha(S proportional to nu(alpha)) of - 1.8(-0.2)(+0.3) which is much steeper than the - 0.8 quoted by van der Hulst & Hummel ( 1985); b) detection of other tidal features like the tilted HI and radio continuum disk of NGC 2814, a HI streamer and a radio continuum tail arising from the south of NGC 2814. We also report the detection of a possible tidal dwarf galaxy in HI; c) sharp truncation in the HI distribution in the south of NGC 2820 and in the HI and radio continuum distribution in the north of NGC 2814. The optical disks in both the cases look undisturbed. As pointed out by Davis et al. ( 1997, AJ, 114, 613), ram pressure affects different components of the interstellar medium to varying degrees. Simple estimates of pressure in different components of the interstellar medium ( radio continuum, Ha and HI) in NGC 2820 indicate that ram pressure will significantly influence HI; d) detection of a large one-sided HI loop to the north of NGC 2820. No radio continuum emission or Ha emission is associated with the HI loop. We discuss various scenarios for the origin of this loop including a central starburst, ram pressure stripping and tidal interaction. We do not support the central starburst scenario since the loop is not detected in ionized gas. Using the upper limit on X-ray luminosity of Ho 124 (Mulchaey et al. 2003, ApJS, 145, 39), we estimate an upper limit on the intragroup medium (IGrM) density of 8.8 x 10(-4) cm(-3). For half this electron density, we estimate the ram pressure force of the IGrM to be comparable to the gravitational pull of the disk of NGC 2820. Since tidal interaction has obviously influenced the group, we suggest that the loop could have formed by ram pressure stripping if tidal effects had reduced the surface density of HI in NGC 2820. From the complex observational picture of Ho 124 and the numerical estimates, we suggest that the evolution of the Ho 124 group may be governed by both tidal forces due to the interaction and the ram pressure due to motion of the member galaxies in the IGrM and that the IGrM densities should not be too low (i.e. >= 4 x 10(-4)). However this needs to be verified by further observations.

The boxicity of a graph G, denoted box(G), is the least integer d such that G is the intersection graph of a family of d-dimensional (axis-parallel) boxes. The cubicity, denoted cub(G), is the least dsuch that G is the intersection graph of a family of d-dimensional unit cubes. An independent set of three vertices is an asteroidal triple if any two are joined by a path avoiding the neighbourhood of the third. A graph is asteroidal triple free (AT-free) if it has no asteroidal triple. The claw number psi(G) is the number of edges in the largest star that is an induced subgraph of G. For an AT-free graph G with chromatic number chi(G) and claw number psi(G), we show that box(G) <= chi(C) and that this bound is sharp. We also show that cub(G) <= box(G)([log(2) psi(G)] + 2) <= chi(G)([log(2) psi(G)] + 2). If G is an AT-free graph having girth at least 5, then box(G) <= 2, and therefore cub(G) <= 2 [log(2) psi(G)] + 4. (c) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bangladesh, often better known to the outside world as a country of natural calamities, is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Despite rapid urbanization, more than 75% of the people still live in rural areas. The density of the rural population is also one of the highest in the world. Being a poor and low-income country, its main challenge is to eradicate poverty through increasing equitable income. Since its independence in 1971, Bangladesh has experienced many ups and downs, but over the past three decades, its gross domestic product (GDP) has grown at an impressive rate. Consequently, the country s economy is developing and the country has outperformed many low-income countries in terms of several social indicators. Bangladesh has achieved the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of eliminating gender disparity in primary and secondary school enrollment. A sharp decline in child and infant mortality rates, increased per capita income, and improved food security have placed Bangladesh on the track to achieving in the near future the status of a middle-income country. All these developments have influenced the consumption pattern of the country. This study explores the consumption scenario of rural Bangladesh, its changing consumption patterns, the relationship between technology and consumption in rural Bangladesh, cultural consumption in rural Bangladesh, and the myriad reasons why consumers nevertheless feel compelled to consume chemically treated foods. Data were collected in two phases in the summers of 2006 and 2008. In 2006, the empirical data were collected from the following three sources: interviews with consumers, producers/sellers, and doctors and pharmacists; observations of sellers/producers; and reviews of articles published in the national English and Bengali (the national language of Bangladesh) daily newspapers. A total of 110 consumers, 25 sellers/producers, 7 doctors, and 7 pharmacists were interviewed and observed. In 2008, data were collected through semi-structured in-depth qualitative interviews, ethnography, and unstructured conversations substantiated by secondary sources and photographs; the total number of persons interviewed was 22. -- Data were also collected on the consumption of food, clothing, housing, education, medical facilities, marriage and dowry, the division of labor, household decision making, different festivals such as Eid (for Muslims), the Bengali New Year, and Durga puja (for Hindus), and leisure. Qualitative methods were applied to the data analysis and were supported by secondary quantitative data. The findings of this study suggest that the consumption patterns of rural Bangladeshis are changing over time along with economic and social development, and that technology has rendered aspects of daily life more convenient. This study identified the perceptions and experiences of rural people regarding technologies in use and explored how culture is associated with consumption. This study identified the reasons behind the use of hazardous chemicals (e.g. calcium carbide, sodium cyclamate, cyanide and formalin, etc.) in foods as well as the extent to which food producers/sellers used such chemicals. In addition, this study assessed consumer perceptions of and attitudes toward these contaminated food items and explored how adulterated foods and food stuffs affect consumer health. This study also showed that consumers were aware that various foods and food stuffs contained hazardous chemicals, and that these adulterated foods and food stuffs were harmful to their health.

Magnetometer data, acquired on spacecraft and simultaneously at high and low latitudes on the ground, are compared in order to study the propagation characteristics of hydromagnetic energy deep into the magnetosphere. Single events provide evidence that wave energy at L ∼ 3 can at times be only one order of magnitude lower than at L ∼ 13. In addition, statistical analyses of the H-component groundbased data obtained during local daytime hours of 17 July-3 August 1985 show that wave amplitudes at L ∼ 3 are generally 10-30 times lower than at L ∼ 13. The L-dependence of near-equator magnetic field fluctuations measured on ISEE-2 show a sharp drop in energy near the magnetopause and a more gradual fall-off of energy deeper inside the magnetosphere. Such high levels of wave power deep in the magnetosphere have not been quantitatively understood previously. Our initial attempt is to calculate the decay length of an evanescent wave generated at a thick magnetopause boundary. Numerical calculations show that fast magnetosonic modes (called magnetopause and inner mode) can be generated under very restrictive conditions for the field and plasma parameters. These fast compressional modes may have their energy reduced by only one order of magnitude over a penetration depth of about 8RE. More realistic numerical simulations need to be carried out to see whether better agreement with the data can be attained.

The asymmetric stress strain behavior under tension/compression in an initial < 100 > B-2-NiAl nanowire is investigated considering two different surface configurations i.e., < 100 >/(0 1 0) (0 0 1) and < 100 >/(0 1 1) (0 - 1 1). This behavior is attributed to two different deformation mechanisms namely a slip dominated deformation under compression and a known twinning dominated deformation under tension. It is also shown that B2 -> BCT (body-centered-tetragonal) phase transformation under tensile loading is independent of the surface configurations for an initial < 100 > oriented NiAl nanowire. Under tensile loading, the nanowire undergoes a stress-induced martensiticphase transformation from an initial B2 phase to BCT phase via twinning along {110} plane with failure strain of similar to 0.30. On the other hand, a compressive loading causes failure of these nanowires via brittle fracture after compressive yielding, with a maximum failure strain of similar to-0.12. Such brittle fracture under compressive loading occurs via slip along {110} plane without any phase transformations. Softening/hardening behavior is also reported for the first time in these nanowires under tensile/compressive loadings, which cause asymmetry in their yield strength behavior in the stress strain space. Result shows that a sharp increase in energy with increasing strain under compressive loading causes hardening of the nanowire, and hence, gives improved yield strength as compared to tensile loading. Photoacoustic (PA) technique is used to study glass transition and temperature dependence of thermal diffusivity in AsxTe1-x glasses with 0.25 0.60. PA amplitude goes through a minimum and the phase shows a maximum at glass transition temperature Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with temperature shows sharp decrease near Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with composition shows maximum at = 0.40 for all temperatures T Tg.

The photoacoustic technique is used to determine the optical energy gap E0 of bulk SixTe100−x glasses in the glass-forming region 10 ≤ x ≤ 28. The thermal diffusivity α of these samples has also been measured. The variation of E0 and α with x is reported. It is found that E0 increases with x nearly linearly with a sharp decrease in the rate of increase beyond x = 20. The thermal diffusivity also increases with x up to x = 20 but decreases for compositions with higher values of x. The observed behaviour is explained on the basis of a chemical bond approach. It is accounted for in terms of the increase in the number of Te---Te bonds and formation of SiTe4 tetrahedra with an increase in the chalcogen content.

The electrical capacitance and resistance of the binary liquid mixture cyclohexane + acetonitrile are measured in the one phase and two phase regions at spot frequencies between 5 kHz and 100 kHz. This sample has a very low gravity affected (∼0.6 mK) region. In one phase region the capacitance data show a sharp, ∼0.7% increase above background within 0.5 degrees of Tc whereas the resistance has a smooth increase of ∼1.5% above background in a (T−Tc) range of 4 degrees. Two phase values of capacitance and resistance from the coexisting phases are used to determine the critical parameters Tc (critical temperature), Rc (resistance at Tc) and Cc (capacitance at Tc). A precise knowledge of these parameters reduces the uncertainty on the critical exponent 0 for C and R. The one phase capacitance data fit to an (1 - α) exponent in a limited temperature range of 0.2 degrees. Resistance data strongly support an (1 - α) exponent over the entire 5 degree range.

We have investigated the near-critical behavior of the susceptibility of a ternary liquid mixture of 3-methylpyridine. water, and sodium bromide as a function of the salt concentration. The susceptibility was determined from light-scattering measurements performed at a scattering angle of 90 degrees in the one-phase region near the locus of lower consolute points. A sharp crossover from asymptotic Ising behavior to mean-field behavior has been observed at concentrations ranging from 8 to 16.5 mass% NaBr. The range of asymptotic Ising behavior shrinks with increasing salt concentration and vanishes at a NaBr concentration of about 17 mass%. where complete mean-field-like behavior of the susceptibility is observed. A simultaneous pronounced increase in the background scattering at concentrations above 15 mass%, as well as a dip in the critical locus at 17 mass % NaBr, suggests that this phenomenon can be interpreted as mean-field tricritical behavior associated with the formation of a microheterogeneous phase due to clustering of the molecules and ions. An analogy with tri critical behavior observed in polymer solutions as well as the possibility of a charge-density-wave phase is also discussed. In addition, we, have observed a third soap-like phase an the liquid-liquid interface in several binary and ternary liquid mixtures.

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to examine the changes in water density and hydration characteristics of NaCl solutions confined in slit-shaped graphitic pores. Using a structural signature, we define the hydration limit as the salt concentration at which a sharp drop in the hydration number is observed. At small pores (H = 8.0-10 angstrom), confined water does not possess bulk-like features and remains in a layered arrangement between two surfaces. Despite this high degree of confinement, ions are able to form a quasi-2D hydration shell between two surfaces. Our results indicate the strong propensity of ions to form the first hydration shell, even under extremely confined aqueous environments. The hydration of ions is seen to weakly perturb the oxygen density distributions between two surfaces. The hydration number of Na+ reduces to about 4.15 at a pore width of H = 0.8 nm, when compared with the bulk hydration number of 6.25. At larger pore widths, above H = 16 angstrom, where bulk-like water densities are observed in the central regions of the pore, the hydration number is above 6.

Anderson localised states in the bulk of a disordered medium appear as sharp resonances near the surface. The resonant backscattering leads to an energy-dependent random time delay for an incident electron. We derive an analytic expression for the delay-time probability distribution at a given energy. This is shown to give a 1/f noise for the surface currents in general.

To study the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the incommensurate lattice modulation at 153 K in K3Cu8S6, electrical resistivity measurements are done at 1.0 GPa, 1.5 GPa and 2.2 GPa. The sharp increase in resistance at 2.2 GPa is attributed to the incommensurate to commensurate transition. This is further confirmed by the non-linear I–V characteristics at 2.2 GPa showing the driven motion of the commensurate charge density wave in the presence of an external electric field.

In this work, using self-consistent tight-binding calculations. for the first time, we show that a direct to indirect band gap transition is possible in an armchair graphene nanoribbon by the application of an external bias along the width of the ribbon, opening up the possibility of new device applications. With the help of the Dirac equation, we qualitatively explain this band gap transition using the asymmetry in the spatial distribution of the perturbation potential produced inside the nanoribbon by the external bias. This is followed by the verification of the band gap trends with a numerical technique using Magnus expansion of matrix exponentials. Finally, we show that the carrier effective masses possess tunable sharp characters in the vicinity of the band gap transition points.

Monophasic Na0.5La0.5Bi4Ti4O15 powders were synthesized via the conventional solid-state reaction route. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies carried out on the as synthesized powdered samples confirmed the phase to be a four-layer Aurivillius that crystallizes in an orthorhombic A2(1)am space group. The microstructure and the chemical composition of the sintered sample were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The dielectric properties of the ceramics have been studied in the 27-700 degrees C temperature range at various frequencies (100 Hz to 1 MHz). A sharp dielectric anomaly was observed at 580 degrees C for all the frequencies corresponding to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition. Saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed at 200 degrees C and the associated remnant polarization (P-r) and coercive field (E-c) were found to be 7.4 mu C/cm(2) and 34.8 kV/cm, respectively. AC conductivity analysis confirmed the existence of two different conduction mechanisms in the ferroelectric region. Activation energies calculated from the Arrhenius plots were similar to 0.24 eV and similar to 0.84 eV in the 300-450 degrees C and 450-580 degrees C temperature ranges, respectively. The electrical resistivity of bulk GexTe100-x glasses has been measured as a function of temperature and pressure. Under high pressure, all the glasses were found to undergo sharp discontinuous transitions from glassy semiconductors to crystalline metal. Several of the observed properties such as the transition pressure, conductivity activation energy and pre-exponential factor, exhibit anomalous trends at a composition x = 20. These results suggest that the x = 20 composition in the Ge-Te system should possess salient structural features. A model based on the unusual stability of structural units is proposed for explaining the anomaly at 20 at.% Ge concentration.
