Animals can call on a multitude of sensory information to orient and navigate. In some cases they may calibrate these cues against each other to establish the most accurate information available. One such cue is the pattern of polarized light in the sky, which may be used as a geographical reference to calibrate other cues in the compass mechanism. Mammals, however, have not been shown to use this cue, even though they do calibrate a magnetic compass with sunset. In this paper we demonstrate that bats use polarization cues at sunset to calibrate a magnetic compass, subsequently used for orientation during a homing experiment. It is thus the only mammal known so far to make use of the polarization pattern in the sky. This is an intriguing finding as currently there is no clear understanding of how this cue is perceived in this taxon and has general implications for the sensory biology of mammalian vision.

Aims/hypothesis
The receptor for AGEs (RAGE) is linked to proinflammatory pathology in a range of tissues. The objective of this study was to assess the potential modulatory role of RAGE in diabetic retinopathy.
Methods
Diabetes was induced in wild-type (WT) and Rage −/− mice (also known as Ager −/− mice) using streptozotocin while non-diabetic control mice received saline. For all groups, blood glucose, HbA1c and retinal levels of methylglyoxal (MG) were evaluated up to 24 weeks post diabetes induction. After mice were killed, retinal glia and microglial activation, vasopermeability, leucostasis and degenerative microvasculature changes were determined.
Results
Retinal expression of RAGE in WT diabetic mice was increased after 12 weeks (p < 0.01) but not after 24 weeks. Rage −/− mice showed comparable diabetes but accumulated less MG and this corresponded to enhanced activity of the MG-detoxifying enzyme glyoxalase I in their retina when compared with WT mice. Diabetic Rage −/− mice showed significantly less vasopermeability, leucostasis and microglial activation (p < 0.05–0.001). Rage −/− mice were also protected against diabetes-related retinal acellular capillary formation (p < 0.001) but not against pericyte loss.
Conclusions/interpretation Rage −/− in diabetic mice is protective against many retinopathic lesions, especially those related to innate immune responses. Inhibition of RAGE could be a therapeutic option to prevent diabetic retinopathy.

1-Hydroxy-1,2-benziodoxol-3(1H)-one I-oxide prepared by oxidation of o-iodobenzoic acid with potassium bromate forms either a microcrystalline powder, a macrocrystalline material, or a mixture of both forms. This difference in physical form is the source of the difficulty in reproducibly converting 1-hydroxy-1,2-benziodoxol-3(1H)-one 1-oxide to the corresponding I-triacetoxy derivative. A simple method is given for conversion of crystalline 1-hydroxy-1,2-benziodoxol-3(1H)-one 1-oxide to the more reactive powder form, The microcrystalline powder and macrocrystalline material are characterised by X-ray diffraction.

This paper examines the role of the Anaesthetic Nuse Specialist(ANS) in the context of innovative cochlear implant surgery which restores hearing to those with long term deafness. The specific focus is patient centered care during the long surgery under local anaestha when the patient is awake.
It is crucial during this surgery that the patient remains still, relaxed and calm, the ANS has been particularly creative using communication cards and tablets to allow patients to write questions and the nurse to answer. The writers capture the unique moment when someone with long term hearing can hear, and the ensuing emotion from the patient and theatre team.
