This study brings new insights into the magmatic evolution of natural F-enriched peraluminous granitic systems. The Artjärvi, Sääskjärvi and Kymi granite stocks within the 1.64 Ga Wiborg rapakivi granite batholith have been investigated by petrographic, geochemical, experimental and melt inclusion methods. These stocks represent late-stage leucocratic and weakly peraluminous intrusive phases typical of rapakivi granites worldwide. The Artjärvi and Sääskjärvi stocks are multiphase intrusions in which the most evolved phase is topaz granite. The Kymi stock contains topaz throughout and has a well-developed zoned structure, from the rim to the center: stockscheider pegmatite equigranular topaz granite porphyritic topaz granite. Geochemically the topaz granites are enriched in F, Li, Be, Ga, Rb, Sn and Nb and depleted in Mg, Fe, Ti, Ba, Sr, Zr and Eu. The anomalous geochemistry and mineralogy of the topaz granites are essentially magmatic in origin; postmagmatic reactions have only slightly modified the compositions. The Kymi equigranular topaz granite shows the most evolved character, and the topaz granites at Artjärvi and Sääskjärvi resemble the less evolved porphyritic topaz granite of the Kymi stock. Stockscheiders are found at the roof contacts of the Artjärvi and Kymi stocks. The stockscheider at Artjärvi is composed of biotite-rich schlieren and pegmatite layers parallel to the contact. The schlieren layering is considered to have formed by velocity-gradient sorting mechanism parallel to the flow, which led to the accumulation of mafic minerals along the upper contact of the topaz granite. Cooling and contraction of the topaz granite formed fractures parallel to the roof contact and residual pegmatite magmas were injected along the fractures and formed the pegmatite layers. The zoned structure of the Kymi stock is the result of intrusion of highly evolved residual melt from deeper parts of the magma chamber along the fractured contact between the porphyritic granite crystal mush and country rock. The equigranular topaz granite and marginal pegmatite (stockscheider) crystallized from this evolved melt. Phase relations of the Kymi equigranular topaz granite have been investigated utilizing crystallization experiments at 100 to 500 MPa as a function of water activity and F content. Fluorite and topaz can crystallize as liquidus phases in F-rich peraluminous systems, but the F content of the melt should exceed 2.5 - 3.0 wt % to facilitate crystallization of topaz. In peraluminous F-bearing melts containing more than 1 wt % F, topaz and muscovite are expected to be the first F-bearing phases to crystallize at high pressure, whereas fluorite and topaz should crystallize first at low pressure. Overall, the saturation of fluorite and topaz follows the reaction: CaAl2Si2O8 (plagioclase) + 2[AlF3]melt = CaF2 (fluorite) + 2Al2SiO4F2 (topaz). The obtained partition coefficient for F between biotite and glass D(F)Bt/glass is 1.89 to 0.80 (average 1.29) and can be used as an empirical fluormeter to determine the F content of coexisting melts. In order to study the magmatic evolution of the Kymi stock, crystallized melt inclusions in quartz and topaz grains in the porphyritic and the equigranular topaz granites and the marginal pegmatite were rehomogenized and analyzed. The homogenization conditions for the melt inclusions from the granites were 700 °C, 300 MPa, and 24 h, and for melt inclusions from the pegmatite, 700 °C, 100 MPa, and 24/96 h. The majority of the melt inclusions is chemically similar to the bulk rocks (excluding H2O content), but a few melt inclusions in the equigranular granite show clearly higher F and low K2O contents (on average 11.6 wt % F, 0.65 wt % K2O). The melt inclusion compositions indicate coexistence of two melt fractions, a prevailing peraluminous and a very volatile-rich, possibly peralkaline. Combined petrological, experimental and melt inclusion studies of the Kymi equigranular topaz granite indicate that plagioclase was the liquidus phase at nearly water-saturated (fluid-saturated) conditions and that the F content of the melt was at least 2 wt %. The early crystallization of biotite and the presence of muscovite in crystallization experiments at 200 MPa contrasts with the late-stage crystallization of biotite and the absence of muscovite in the equigranular granite, indicating that crystallization pressure may have been lower than 200 MPa for the granite.

The fabrication of hydrogen bonded polymer self-assembly for drug delivery has been accomplished via layer-by-layer sequential assembly from aqueous solution. In this study, the self-assembly was constructed based on hydrogen bonding between DNA base (adenine and thymine) pairs substituted on the backbone of chitosan and hyaluronic acid. Chitosan was modified with adenine, whereas hyaluronic acid was modified with thymine. Subsequently, these two polymers were sequentially absorbed on flat substrate by taking advantage of interactions of DNA base pairs via hydrogen bonding. Interlayer hydrogen bonding of these two polymers produces stable multilayer film without using any cross-linking agent. Thin film formation on quartz substrate has been monitored with UV-vis spectra and an AFM study. Formation of multilayer hydrogen-bonded thin film has been further confirmed with SEM. Encapsulation and release behavior of the therapeutic drug from the multilayer thin film at different conditions has been illustrated using UV-vis spectra. Cell viability of modified polymers using MTT assay confirmed no cytotoxic effect.

A simple triggered vacuum gap has previously been described by the authors in this journal (see ibid., vol.5, 415, 1972). Further studies have resulted in improvement of the performance with regard to sensitivity and consistency of the trigger characteristics and immunity from bridging due to metal particles eroded from the arc. The earlier design suffered from rather frequent bridging of the auxiliary gap and showed rather wide scatter in its trigger characteristics. In the present design thermally stable materials like fused quartz, machinable ceramic 'Supramica 500' (Mycalex Corporation of America), lead titanate, barium titanate (LCC HTD) and silicon carbide have been used to insulate the trigger electrode from the cathode. Consistent triggerings free from bridging, at relatively low voltages of 200-400 V have been obtained.

Atomic layer deposition was used to obtain TiO2 thin films on Si (100) and fused quartz, using a novel metal organic precursor. The films were grown at 400 degrees C, varying the amount of oxygen used as the reactive gas. X-ray diffraction showed the films to be crystalline, with a mixture of anatase and rutile phases. To investigate their optical properties, ellipsometric measurements were made in the UV-Vis-NIR range (300-1700 nm). Spectral distribution of various optical constants like refractive index (n), absorption index (k), transmittance (T), reflectance (R), absorption (A) were calculated by employing Bruggemann's effective medium approximation (BEMA) and Maxwell-Garnet effective medium approximation, in conjunction with the Cauchy and Forouhi-Bloomer (FB) dispersion relations. A layered optical model has been proposed which gives the thickness, elemental and molecular composition, amorphicity and roughness (morphology) of the TiO2 film surface and and the film/substrate interface, as a function of oxygen flow rate The spectral distribution of the optical band gap (E-g(opt)), complex dielectric constants (epsilon' and epsilon''), and optical conductivity (sigma(opt)), has also been determined.

Various carbon nanostructures (CNs) have been prepared by a simple deposition technique based on the pyrolysis of a new carbon source material tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixed with ferrocene using quartz tube reactor in the temperature range 700-1100 degrees C. A detailed study of how the synthesis parameter such as growth temperature affects the morphology of the carbon nanostructures is presented. The obtained CNs are investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron dispersive scattering (EDS)thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), Raman and transmission electron microscope (TEM). It is observed that at 700 degrees C. normal CNTs are formed. Iron filled multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon nanoribbons (CNRs) are formed at 950 degrees C. Magnetic characterization of iron filled MWCNTs and CNRs studied at 300 K by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) reveals that these nanostructures have an enhanced coercivity (Hc = 1049 Oe) higher than that of bulk Fe. The large shape anisotropy of MWCNTs, which act on the encapsulated material (Fe), is attributed for the contribution of the higher coercivity. Coiled carbon nanotubes (CCNTs) were obtained as main products in large quantities at temperature 1100 degrees C.

The first finding of low-temperature eclogites from the Indochina region is reported. The eclogites occur along the Song Ma Suture zone in northern Vietnam, which is widely regarded as the boundary between the South China and Indochina cratons. The major lithology of the area is pelitic schist that contains garnet and phengite with or without biotite, chloritoid, staurolite and kyanite, and which encloses blocks and lenses of eclogite and amphibolite. The eclogites commonly consist of garnet, omphacite, phengite, rutile, quartz and/or epidote with secondary barroisite. Omphacite is commonly surrounded by a symplectite of Na-poor omphacite and Na-rich plagioclase. In highly retrograded domains, diopside + tremolite + plagioclase symplectites replace the primary phases. Estimated peak-pressure metamorphic conditions based on isochemical phase diagrams for the eclogites are 2.1-2.2 GPa and 600-620 degrees C, even though thermobarometric results yield higher pressure and temperature conditions (2.6-2.8 GPa and 620-680 degrees C). The eclogites underwent a clockwise P-T trajectory with a post-peak-pressure increase of temperature to a maximum of > 750 degrees C at 1.7 GPa and a subsequent cooling during decompression to 650 degrees C and 1.3 GPa, which was followed by additional cooling before close-to-isothermal decompression to similar to 530 degrees C at 0.5 GPa. The surrounding pelitic schist (garnet-chloritoid-phengite) records similar metamorphic conditions (580-600 degrees C at 1.9-2.3 GPa) and a monazite chemical age of 243 +/- 4 Ma. A few monazite inclusions within garnet and the cores of some zoned monazite in garnet-phengite schist record an older thermal event (424 +/- 15 Ma). The present results indicate that the Indochina craton was deeply (> 70 km) subducted beneath the South China craton in the Triassic. The Silurian cores of monazite grains may relate to an older non-collisional event in the Indochina craton.

The present paper records the results of a case study on the impact of an extensive grassland fire on the physical and optical properties of aerosols at a semi-arid station in southern India for the first time from ground based measurements using a MICROTOPS-II sunphotometer, an aethalometer and a quartz crystal microbalance impactor (QCM). Observations revealed a substantial increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD) at all wavelengths during burning days compared to normal days. High AOD values observed at shorter wavelengths suggest the dominance of accumulation mode particle loading over the study area. Daily mean aerosol size spectra shows, most of the time, power-law distribution. To characterize AOD, the Angstrom parameters (i.e., alpha and beta) were used. Wavelength exponent (1.38) and turbidity coefficient (0.21) are high during burning days compared to normal days, thereby suggesting an increase in accumulation mode particle loading. Aerosol size distribution suggested dominance of accumulation mode particle loading during burning days compared to normal days. A significant positive correlation was observed between AOD at 500 mn and water vapour and negative correlation between AOD at 500 nm and wind speed for burning and non-burning days. Diurnal variations of black carbon (BC) aerosol mass concentrations increased by a factor of similar to 2 in the morning and afternoon hours during burning period compared to normal days.

This study presents a detailed description on crustal metamorphic signatures of garnet-clinopyroxene-quartz-rutile-bearing high P-T granulites, Samgot unit, Imajingang belt, northwestern Korean Peninsula that formed during Permo-Triassic regional metamorphism related to the amalgamation of East Asian continental fragments. Lenses and blocks of high P-T granulites and garnet-bearing leucosomes occur within mafic metamorphic rocks (mainly amphibolites). The mafic blocks comprise relicts of granoblastic garnet and clinopyroxene with medium-grained quartz and rutile. These relict mineral assemblages are confined to local micro-domains and constitute remnants of peak metamorphism. Plagioclase and amphibole form only as retrograde phases in medium ton coarse-grained moats that rim grain boundaries between relict peak mineral assemblages. This microstructure represents the reaction between garnet, clinopyroxene, quartz and rutile in the presence of melt to form amphibole, plagioclase and titanite with minor biotite. The leucosome domains consist of euhedral garnets within the quartz-K feldspar-plagioclase (granitic) matrix, probably representing peritectic garnet growth along with melting. The rare earth element (REE) composition of minerals also support the peritectic garnet growth with a positive Eu/Eu* (positive Eu anomaly), while the relict garnet shows a slight negative anomaly typical for high-grade granulites. The peak-metamorphic conditions calculated from thermodynamic modeling and compositional isopleths indicate a temperature around c. 900 degrees C at a pressure around c. 20 kbar. The present P-T path indicates a clear multi-stage decompression history with initial decompression and cooling followed by a stage of decompression during hydration possibly during Late Triassic exhumation. The results from this study together with the presence of eclogites from the Hongsung area suggest that the Imjingang area and the western Gyeonggi massif likely resided at crustal levels deeper than those of the eastern and southern part of the Gyeonggi massif. Eclogites and their retrogressed equivalents from the eastern unit of the Glenelg-Attadale Inlier in NW Scotland preserve much microstructural evidence that indicates that very high-pressure/temperature eclogite facies conditions were reached, and followed by decompression and hydration during exhumation. Rutile exsolution in garnet and quartz exsolution in omphacite and titanite formed through mineral reactions during high P-T peak metamorphism. Isochemical phase diagrams modeled for samples from three different locations indicate that the outer part of the eastern unit preserves a peak metamorphic condition of c. 850-1000 degrees C at 18-25 kbar, whereas the central part has a similar pressure (c. 23 kbar), but a lower temperature (c. 670 degrees C). Due to the limitations in the phase diagram calculations the estimated P-T conditions represent the minimum conditions attained by the peak metamorphic assemblage, and the pre-exsoived peak assemblage probably stabilized at a higher pressure. This observation is strongly supported by the presence of exsolution microstructures. The present results demonstrate that the eastern unit experienced very high P-T conditions during peak metamorphism and a tight clockwise P-T trajectory and provide the first indication of possible ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism in the Glenelg eclogites. The electrochemical functionalization of a Au electrode with a redox-active monolayer and the electroanalytical applications of the functionalized electrode are described. Reaction of the electrochemically derived o-quinone on the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 6-mercaptopurine (MPU) on a Au electrode gives a redox-active 4-(6-mercapto-purin-9-yl)benzene-1,2-diol (MPBD) self-assembly under optimized conditions. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance technique has been employed to follow the functionalization of the electrode in real time. Electrochemically derived o-quinone reacts at the N(9) position of the self-assembled MPU in neutral pH. Raman spectral measurement confirms the reaction of o-quinone on MPU self-assembly. MPBD shows a well-defined reversible redox response, characteristic of a surface-confined redox mediator at 0.21 V in neutral pH. The anodic peak potential (Epa) of MPBD shifts by −60 mV while changing the solution pH by 1 unit, indicating that the redox reaction involves two electrons and two protons. The surface coverage (Γ) of MPBD was 7.2 ± 0.3 × 10-12 mol/cm2. The apparent heterogeneous rate constant (ksapp) for MPBD was 268 ± 6 s-1. MPBD efficiently mediates the oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and ascorbate (AA). A large decrease in the overpotential and significant increase in the peak current with respect to the unmodified electrode has been observed. Surface-confined MPBD has been successfully used for the amperometric sensing of NADH and AA in neutral pH at the nanomolar level.

Microwave sources used in present day applications are either multiplied source derived from basic quartz crystals, or frequency synthesizers. The frequency multiplication method increases FM noise power considerably, and has very low efficiency in addition to being very complex and expensive. The complexity and cost involved demands a simple, compact and tunable microwave source. A tunable dielectric resonator oscillator(DRO) is an ideal choice for such applications. In this paper, the simulation, design and realization of a tunable DRO with a center frequency of 6250 MHz is presented. Simulation has been carried out on HP-Ees of CAD software. Mechanical and electronic tuning features are provided. The DRO operates over a frequency range of 6235 MHz to 6375 MHz. The output power is +5.33 dBm at centre frequency. The performance of the DRO is as per design with respect to phase noise, harmonic levels and tunability. and hence, can conveniently be used for the intended applications.

The ultraviolet bands of mercury iodide have been excited in uncondensed discharge and photographed with a quartz Littrow spectrograph. The bands in the region λ 2658 to 2530 Å have been analysed into two systems which may form the two components of a2Π-2∑ electronic transition with a2Π interval equal to 858·9 cm-1. These systems and the systems in the region λ 3095 to 2647 Å have the same lower state.

With the use of the quartz fiber spring balance, sorptions and desorptions of water on silica gel at 30°C were studied and the permanent and reproducible hysteresis loop was obtained. At different points on the desorption curve forming the loop, the gel was subjected to high tension glow electric discharge. As a result of the electric discharge, the gel at any point on the desorption curve shifts to a corresponding point on the sorption curve. This is due to the release from the cavities of gel of the entrapped water held in a metastable state. The electric discharge has no effect on the gel at different points on portions of the desorption curve which coincide with the sorption curve and also on the sorption curve itself, indicating the absence of entrapped water in the gel in these regions. The results afford direct experimental evidence of the reality of the cavity theory of sorption-desorption hysteresis.

Nanomechanical properties of indium nanowires like structures fabricated on quartz substrate by trench template technique, measured using nanoindentation. The hardness and elastic modulus of wires were measured and compared with the values of indium thin film. Displacementburst observed while indenting the nanowire. `Wire-only hardness' obtained using Korsunsky model from composite hardness. Nanowires have exhibited almost same modulus as indium thin film but considerable changes were observed in hardness value.

The phyllite deposit of Degana, Rajasthan, containing tungsten values in the form of wolframite, (Fe, MnWO sub 4 ) finely dispersed in the quartz groundmass, has been quantitatively analysed to give 0.063% WO sub 3 , 6.66% Fe sub 2 O sub 3 , 14.30% Al sub 2 O sub 3 and 67.4% SiO sub 2 . The major gangue minerals identified are quartz, iron oxides and mica along with minor amounts of graphite, fluorite and sulphides. The amenability of the ore to gravity concentration, magnetic separation and a combination of the processes has been studied. A combination of tabling on --100 mesh ground ore and dry magnetic separation of the tabled concentrate gave a final concentrate containing 1.834% WO sub 3 with an overall recovery of only 4.6%. The complex mineralogy combined with fine dispersion of very low W values have contributed to the low recoveries and grades. Graph, photomicrographs. 10 ref.--AA
