Several juvenile specimens of Sparisoma cretense, a previously unrecorded species, were caught using beach seining in Ria Formosa.The hypothesis that these occurrences are related with climatic changes is discussed.

The study of groundwater dependent ecosystems opened the opportunity to involve specialists of different areas of knowledge in order to obtain answers for complex interrelations between groundwater and the associated ecosystems. The actual study, carried out in two coastal lagoons of the Portuguese SW coast, showed the high dependency of the marine life and vegetation of the lagoons and associated streams discharging in the lagoons on the fresh water supply of these two lagoons and the high contribution they receive from groundwater in the dry period, which corresponds to more than half of each hydrologic year. Every year, the lagoons are artificially opened to the ocean for a few days to a few weeks, which dramatically changes the inside salinity. The sensitivity of these ecological niches is demonstrated by the strong dependence that some species that are more sensitive to high salinity waters show in relation to the entrance of freshwater resultant from the discharge of the phreatic aquifer of Sines sedimentary Basin. The great biodiversity of these lagoons and its precarious balance is only possible to preserve if the aquifer continue to act as a regulatory factor of the lagoon’s salinity. The equilibrium can be changed in the event of overexploitation of the phreatic aquifer, which is not at risk in the near future. In a scenario of climate change the lagoons will benefit from a slow increase in groundwater contribution, due to the rise of sea level, which will be accompanied by a rise in groundwater levels in the aquifer near the sea.

Portugal regista atualmente um dos mais baixos níveis de fecundidade da Europa e do mundo, resultado da redução do número de filhos e do adiamento dos nascimentos para idades mais tardias. As características individuais e a idade ao nascimento do primeiro filho são determinantes cruciais para o número de filhos que se tem e que se espera ter, variando em função do grau de instrução. Apesar das alterações comportamentais ao longo das últimas décadas, os contextos familiares e a conjugalidade continuam a ser centrais na vida dos portugueses, pois aqueles que não vivem com cônjuge ou companheiro apresentam fecundidades mais baixas. A dimensão familiar ideal é outro determinante crítico, dado que ideais mais baixos potenciam que se tenha menos filhos, dificultando a recuperação da fecundidade. O ideal parece corresponder ao número de filhos que permite manter um determinado nível de vida para a família e ainda garantir aos filhos mais oportunidades, mesmo que para tal se tenha apenas um filho. Daí também a atual relevância das questões económicas nas decisões de fecundidade. A alteração de mentalidades parece ter gerado um novo modelo social marcado por uma crescente valorização dos filhos.

This study examines the long profiles of tributaries of the Tejo (Tagus) and Zêzere rivers in central eastern Portugal (West Iberia) in order to provide new insights into the patterns, timing and controls on drainage development during the Pleistocene to Holocene incision stage. The long profiles were extracted from lower order tributary streams associated with the trunk drainage of the Tejo River and one main tributary, the Zêzere River (Fig. 1). These streams flow through a landscape strongly influenced by variations in bedrock lithology (mainly granites and metasediments), fault structures delimiting crustal blocks with distinct uplift rates, and a base-level lowering history (tectonic uplift / eustatic). The long profiles of the tributaries of the Tejo and Zêzere rivers record a series of transient and permanent knickpoints. The permanent knickpoints have direct correlation with the bedrock strength, corresponding to the outcropping of very hard quartzites or to the transition from softer (slates/metagreywaques) to harder (granite) basement. The analyzed streams/rivers record also an older transient knickpoint/knickzone separating: a) an upstream relict graded profile, with lower steepness and higher concavity, that reflects a long period of quasi-equilibrium conditions reached after the beginning of the incision stage; and b) a downstream reach displaying a rejuvenated long profile, with steeper gradient and lower concavity, particularly for the final segment, which is often convex (Fig. 2). The rejuvenated reaches testify the upstream propagation of several incision waves that are the response of each stream to continuous or increasing crustal uplift and dominant periods of base-level lowering by the trunk drainages, coeval of low sea level conditions. The long profiles and their morphological configurations enabled spatial and relative temporal patterns of incision to be quantified for each individual tributary stream. The incision values of streams flowing in uplifted blocks of the Portuguese Central Range (PCR) (ca.380-280 m) indicate differential uplift and are higher than the incision values of streams flowing on the adjacent South Portugal planation surface – the Meseta (ca. 200 m). The normalized steepness index, calculated using the method of Wobus et al. (2006), proved to be sensitive to active tectonics, as lower ksn values were found in relict graded profiles of streams located in less uplifted blocks, (e.g. Sertã stream in the PCR), or in those flowing through tectonic depressions. The differential uplift indicated by the distribution of the ksn values and by the fluvial incision was likely accumulated on a few major faults, as the Sobreira Formosa fault (SFf), thus corroborating the tectonic activity of these faults. Due to the fact that the relict graded profiles can be correlated with other geomorphic references documented in the study area, namely the T1 terrace of the Tagus River (with an age of ca. 1 Myr), the following incision rates can be estimated: a) for the studied streams located in uplifted blocks of the PCR, 0.38 m/kyr to 0.28 m/kyr; b) for the streams flowing on the South Portugal planation surface, 0.20 m/kyr. The differential uplift inferred between crustal blocks in the study area corroborates the neotectonic activity of the bordering faults, which has been proposed in previous studies based upon less robust data. A Recomendação Relativa à Protecção e Promoção dos Museus e das Colecções, da sua Diversidade e do seu Papel da Sociedade foi aprovada a 17 de Novembro de 2015, em Paris, no âmbito da 38.ª sessão da assembleia-geral da UNESCO. O último documento da UNESCO referente a museus datava de 1960. Mais de 50 anos passados, esta nova Recomendação marca uma posição sobre as orientações que devem ser seguidas pelos Estados Membros em matéria de políticas museológicas. Porquê uma nova Recomendação da UNESCO para os museus e para as colecções? Como surge? Que contextos? Qual a sua importância? Quais as novidades? Que impacto para as políticas nacionais? Estas são algumas das questões a que este texto procura responder através de dois olhares, o de Clara Frayão Camacho, que foi a perita nacional envolvida na discussão durante a fase preparatória do documento, e com Pedro Pereira Leite, museólogo que tem centrado a sua investigação na função social dos museus. The incision values of streams flowing on the Portuguese Central Range (PCR; ca. 380–150 m) are variable but generally higher than the incision values of streams flowing on the adjacent South Portugal Planation Surface (SPPS; ca. 220–110 m), corroborating differential uplift of the PCR relative to the SPPS. Owing to the fact that the relict graded profiles can be correlated with the Tagus River T1 terrace (1.1–0.9 My) present in the study area, incision rates can be estimated (1) for the streams located in the PCR, 0.38–0.15 m/ky and (2) for the streams flowing on the SPPS, 0.22–0.12 m/ky. The differential uplift inferred in the study area supports the neotectonic activity of the bordering faults, as proposed in previous studies based upon other geological evidence.

Although the extractive operations of quarrying are often considered environmental threats, there is some evidence that abandoned quarries may have a significant positive impact on biodiversity by enhancing habitat quality for several species. In Estremoz Anticlinal, SE Portugal, many of the existing marble quarries have been inactive for decades and were abandoned without any restoration project in progress. The impact of quarry abandonment on avifauna diversity was assessed relative to reference conditions using adjacent rural fields as control areas. No significant differences were found in within-community diversity (alpha diversity) between abandoned quarries and reference sites. However, several dissimilarity indices showed a clear divergence in species composition between abandoned quarries and reference sites. Furthermore, statistically significant differences in species compositions were found between quarries abandoned for different periods. Over time, species composition becomes more similar to that observed in reference sites, reflecting ecological succession and landscape resilience to quarrying. Nevertheless, the studied quarrying landscape exhibited higher gamma and beta diversity than the former traditional landscape; thus, our results suggest that abandoned quarries, rather than damaging and destroying niches, can promote new ecological niches and significantly diversify rural landscapes.

Montado decline has been reported since the end of the nineteenth century in southern Portugal and increased markedly during the 1980s. Consensual reports in the literature suggest that this decline is due to a number of factors, such as environmental constraints, forest diseases, inappropriate management, and socioeconomic issues. An assessment on the pattern of montado distribution was conducted to reveal how the extent of land management, environmental variables, and spatial factors contributed to montado area loss in southern Portugal from 1990 to 2006. A total of 14 independent variables, presumably related to montado loss, were grouped into three sets: environmental variables, land management variables, and spatial variables. From 1990 to 2006, approximately 90,054 ha disappeared in the montado area, with an estimated annual regression rate of 0.14 % year-1. Variation partitioning showed that the land management model accounted for the highest percentage of explained variance (51.8 %), followed by spatial factors (44.6 %) and environmental factors (35.5 %). These results indicate that most variance in the large-scale distribution of recent montado loss is due to land management, either alone or in combination with environmental and spatial factors. The full GAM model showed that different livestock grazing is one of the most important variables affecting montado loss. This suggests that optimum carrying capacity should decrease to 0.18–0.60 LU ha-1 for livestock grazing in montado under current ecological conditions in southern Portugal.

As key prey, the wild rabbit downsize constitutes a major drawback on the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) re-introduction in the Iberia. Several captive breeding units mostly located in Alentejo, endeavour the wild rabbit repopulation of depleted areas assigned for the lynx re-introduction. Here we report an RHDV2 outbreak that occurred in early 2016 in a wild rabbit captive breeding unit located in Barrancos municipality. The estimated mortality rate between March and April 2016 was approximately 8.67%. Anatomopathologic examination was carried out for 13 victimized rabbits. Molecular characterization was based on the complete vp60 capsid gene. The 13 rabbit carcasses investigated showed typical macroscopic RHD lesions testing positive to RHDV2-RNA. Comparison of the vp60 nucleotide sequences obtained from two specimens with others publically available disclosed similarities below 98.22% with RHDV2 strains originated in the Iberia and Azores and revealed that the two identical strains from Barrancos-2016 contain six unique single synonymous nucleotide polymorphisms. In the phylogenetic analysis performed, the Barrancos-2016 strains clustered apart from other known strains,meaning they may represent new evolutionary RHDV2 lineages. No clear epidemiological link could be traced for this outbreak where the mortalities were lower compared with previous years. Yet, network analysis suggested a possible connection between the missing intermediates from which the strains from Barrancos 2013, 2014 and 2016 have derived. It is therefore possible that RHDV2 has circulated endemically in the region since 2012, with periodic epizootic occurrences. Still, six years after its emergence in wild rabbits, RHDV2 continues to pose difficulties to the establishment of natural wild rabbit populations that are crucial for the self-sustainability of the local ecosystems.

CARTOGRAFIA ANTIGA Resumo: A cartografia, ou seja, a ciência de preparar cartas, mapas e planos para os mais variados fins, com diversos níveis de complexidade e informação, baseados em elementos científicos, técnicos e artísticos de extremo apuro, tendo por base os resultados da observação direta ou da análise de documentos, remonta a tempos muito antigos. Conhecem-se cartas ou representações de território ou do mundo que ia sendo descoberto, desde Ptolomeu que os realizou baseado nas referências de viajantes e mercadores, e no material coligido por geógrafos que o antecederam, dados sobre a Europa, Ásia e África. Uma das representações mais remotas que existe é uma reconstituição (de autor não identificado) do mapa de Eratóstenes, de cerca de 220 a.C. O matemático grego e bibliotecário da Alexandria usou os levantamentos do mundo conhecidos, após as conquistas de Alexandre, o Grande. Posteriormente nos mapas-mundo medievais, a Terra não tem forma geográfica, mas geográfica ou anti geográfica -como se poderá observar em Psalter, manuscrito em papel velino, anónimo, 1265). Mais tarde o Planisfério de Cantino (1502), constitui-se como a mais antiga carta náutica portuguesa conhecida, mostrando o resultado das viagens de Vasco da Gama à Índia, Colombo à América Central, Gaspar Corte Real à Terra Nova e Pedro Álvares Cabral ao Brasil, representando a superfície terrestre em seu conjunto, apresentando os dois hemisférios lado a lado. A época dos descobrimentos, foi para Portugal, altura em que a ciência da cartografia se desenvolveu de forma muito assinalável, sendo de referir inúmeros cartógrafos reais, de entre os quais André Homem, Bartolomeu Velho, Fernando Álvaro Seco, João Teixeira Albernaz, o Moço, João Teixeira Albernaz, o Velho, Lopo Homem, Pedro Reinel, Pedro Teixeira Albernaz, Diogo Ribeiro, entre muitos outros. Os portugueses também se destacaram na produção de portulanos, especialmente no período do Infante D. Henrique e da lendária "Escola de Sagres “. A partir do século XVI a designação de ‘'portulano'' disseminou-se e começou a ser aplicado a qualquer coleção de instruções náuticas, assim como aos mapas que as acompanhavam. A partir do século XIX o termo passou a designar, de forma genérica, as cartas marítimas produzidas até aos fins do século XVI. A cartografia, foi desde sempre um conjunto de documentos fundamentais, para que homens e bens pudessem circular, que as diferentes civilizações, nas mais distantes partes do mundo se conectassem. Como elementos de orientação terrestre ou marítima foram a representação de territórios novos a explorar. Mais ou menos guarnecidos de cor ou representações fantásticas de gentes e animais procuraram transmitir a visão dos homens coevos.

The Portuguese purse seine fishery could be sustainable if measures to promote multi-specify catches are placed. Chub mackerel is one of the top three species landed by purse seine and landings have been increasing, which could be partly explained by Docapesca’s campaign promoting chub mackerel consumption. Therefore, it is necessary to understand if chub mackerel could represent a sustainable alternative. Results point to overexploitation levels, already exceeding estimated Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). The break point was registered in 2011, when chub mackerel landings surpassed 30 thousand tonnes landed, which is far beyond MSY estimates by Schaefer’s (24 703 ton), Gulland’s (21 750 ton) and Cadima’s (23 250 ton) models. Chub mackerel could represent an alternative to purse seine fisheries if: (i) a catch limit is established; (ii) measures to promote a regulated market on supply and demand laws are placed; (iii) research investment is augmented; Estudo da evolução dos desembarques de cavala (Scomber colias, Gmelin, 1782) em Portugal: sua importância para a pesca de cerco. Resumo: A pesca de cerco em Portugal poderá ser sustentável se forem implementadas medidas para a sua diversificação. A cavala é uma das três espécies mais capturadas pelo cerco, tendo-se observado um aumento dos desembarques nos últimos anos, parte explicado pela campanha focada no seu consumo, promovida pela Docapesa. Torna-se necessário compreender se a cavala poderá constituir uma alternativa sustentável. Os resultados apontam para níveis de exploração acima do Rendimento Máximo Sustentável (RMS) estimado, atingido em 2011, quando os desembarques de cavala ultrapassaram as 30 mil toneladas, acima do RMS estimado de acordo com Schaefer (24 703 ton), Gulland (21 750 ton) e Cadima (23 250 ton), mantendo-se a tendência de sobre-exploração. A cavala poderá ser uma alternativa para o cerco se: (i) estabelecido um limite de captura; (ii) criadas medidas de promoção de um mercado regulado pela lei da oferta e da procura (iii) aumentar o investimento em investigação.

MEGAGEO - Moving megaliths in the Neolithic is a project that intends to find the provenience of lithic materials in the construction of tombs. A multidisciplinary approach is carried out, with researchers from several of the knowledge fields involved. This work presents a spatial data warehouse specially developed for this project that comprises information from national archaeological databases, geographic and geological information and new geochemical and petrographic data obtained during the project. The use of the spatial data warehouse proved to be essential in the data analysis phase of the project. The Redondo Area is presented as a case study for the application of the spatial data warehouse to analyze the relations between geochemistry, geology and the tombs in this area.

Tsunamis are highly energetic events that may destructively impact the coast. Resolving the degree of coastal resilience to tsunamis is extremely difficult and sometimes impossible. In part, our understanding is constrained by the limited number of contemporaneous examples and by the high dynamism of coastal systems. In fact, longterm changes of coastal systems can mask the evidence of past tsunamis, leaving us a short or incomplete sedimentary archive. Here, we present a multidisciplinary approach involving sedimentological, geomorphological and geophysical analyses and numerical modelling of the AD 1755 tsunami flood on a coastal segment located within the southern coast of Portugal. In particular, the work focuses on deciphering the impact of the tsunami waves over a coastal sand barrier enclosing two lowlands largely inundated by the tsunami flood. Erosional features documented by geophysical data were assigned to the AD 1755 eventwith support of sedimentological and age estimation results. Furthermore, these features allowed the calibration of the simulation settings to reconstruct the local conditions and establish the run-up range of the AD 1755 tsunami when it hit this coast (6– 8 m above mean sea level). Our work highlights the usefulness of erosional imprints preserved in the sediment record to interpret the impact of the extreme events on sand barriers
