In recent years, significant research in the field of electrochemistry was developed. The performance of electrical devices, depending on the processes of the electrolytes, was described and the physical origin of each parameter was established. However, the influence of the irregularity of the electrodes was not a subject of study and only recently this problem became relevant in the viewpoint of fractional calculus. This paper describes an electrolytic process in the perspective of fractional order capacitors. In this line of thought, are developed several experiments for measuring the electrical impedance of the devices. The results are analyzed through the frequency response, revealing capacitances of fractional order that can constitute an alternative to the classical integer order elements. Fractional order electric circuits are used to model and study the performance of the electrolyte processes.

In this study the effect of incorporation of recycled glass-fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) waste materials, obtained by means of milling processes, on mechanical behaviour of polyester polymer mortars was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of recycled GFRP waste powder and fibres, with distinct size gradings, were incorporated into polyester based mortars as sand aggregates and filler replacements. Flexural and compressive loading capacities were evaluated and found better than unmodified polymer mortars. GFRP modified polyester based mortars also show a less brittle behaviour, with retention of some loading capacity after peak load. Obtained results highlight the high potential of recycled GFRP waste materials as efficient and sustainable reinforcement and admixture for polymer concrete and mortars composites, constituting an emergent waste management solution.

Glass fibre-reinforced plastics (GFRP), nowadays commonly used in the construction, transportation and automobile sectors, have been considered inherently difficult to recycle due to both: cross-linked nature of thermoset resins, which cannot be remolded, and complex composition of the composite itself, which includes glass fibres, matrix and different types of inorganic fillers. Presently, most of the GFRP waste is landfilled leading to negative environmental impacts and supplementary added costs. With an increasing awareness of environmental matters and the subsequent desire to save resources, recycling would convert an expensive waste disposal into a profitable reusable material. There are several methods to recycle GFR thermostable materials: (a) incineration, with partial energy recovery due to the heat generated during organic part combustion; (b) thermal and/or chemical recycling, such as solvolysis, pyrolisis and similar thermal decomposition processes, with glass fibre recovering; and (c) mechanical recycling or size reduction, in which the material is subjected to a milling process in order to obtain a specific grain size that makes the material suitable as reinforcement in new formulations. This last method has important advantages over the previous ones: there is no atmospheric pollution by gas emission, a much simpler equipment is required as compared with ovens necessary for thermal recycling processes, and does not require the use of chemical solvents with subsequent environmental impacts. In this study the effect of incorporation of recycled GFRP waste materials, obtained by means of milling processes, on mechanical behavior of polyester polymer mortars was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of recycled GFRP waste materials, with distinct size gradings, were incorporated into polyester polymer mortars as sand aggregates and filler replacements. The effect of GFRP waste treatment with silane coupling agent was also assessed. Design of experiments and data treatment were accomplish by means of factorial design and analysis of variance ANOVA. The use of factorial experiment design, instead of the one factor at-a-time method is efficient at allowing the evaluation of the effects and possible interactions of the different material factors involved. Experimental results were promising toward the recyclability of GFRP waste materials as polymer mortar aggregates, without significant loss of mechanical properties with regard to non-modified polymer mortars.

The development and applications of thermoset polymeric composites, namely fiber reinforced polymers (FRP), have shifted in the last decades more and more into the mass market [1]. Production and consume have increased tremendously mainly for the construction, transportation and automobile sectors [2, 3]. Although the many successful uses of thermoset composite materials, recycling process of byproducts and end of lifecycle products constitutes a more difficult issue. The perceived lack of recyclability of composite materials is now increasingly important and seen as a key barrier to the development or even continued used of these materials in some markets.

In this work, the effect of incorporation of recycled glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP) waste materials, obtained by means of shredding and milling processes, on mechanical behavior of polyester polymer mortar (PM) materials was assessed. For this purpose, different contents of GFRP recyclates (between 4% up to 12% in mass), were incorporated into polyester PM materials as sand aggregates and filler replacements. The effect of silane coupling agent addition to resin binder was also evaluated. Applied waste material was proceeding from the shredding of the leftovers resultant from the cutting and assembly processes of GFRP pultrusion profiles. Currently, these leftovers, jointly with unfinished products and scrap resulting from pultrusion manufacturing process, are landfilled, with supplementary added costs. Thus, besides the evident environmental benefits, a viable and feasible solution for these wastes would also conduct to significant economic advantages. Design of experiments and data treatment were accomplish by means of full factorial design approach and analysis of variance ANOVA. Experimental results were promising toward the recyclability of GFRP waste materials as aggregates and reinforcement for PM materials, with significant improvements on mechanical properties with regard to non-modified formulations.

In this study, the added value resultant from the incorporation of pultrusion production waste into polymer based concretes was assessed. For this purpose, different types of thermoset composite scrap material, proceeding from GFRP pultrusion manufacturing process, were mechanical shredded and milled into a fibrous-powdered material. Resultant GFRP recyclates, with two different size gradings, were added to polyester based mortars as fine aggregate and filler replacements, at various load contents between 4% up to 12% in weight of total mass. Flexural and compressive loading capacities were evaluated and found better than those of unmodified polymer mortars. Obtained results highlight the high potential of recycled GFRP pultrusion waste materials as efficient and sustainable admixtures for concrete and mortar-polymer composites, constituting an emergent waste management solution.

To date, glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) waste recycling is very limited and restricted by thermoset nature of binder matrix and lack of economically viable enduse applications for the recyclates. In this study, efforts were made in order to recycle grinded GFRP waste proceeding from pultrusion production scrap, into new and sustainable composite materials. For this purpose, GFRP waste recyclates, a mix of powdered and fibrous materials, were incorporated into polyester based mortars as fine aggregate and filler replacements, at different load contents (between 4% up to 12% of total mass) and particle size distributions. Potential recycling solution was assessed by mechanical behaviour of resultant GFRP waste modified polymer mortars. Test results revealed that GFRP waste filled polymer mortars present improved flexural and compressive behaviour over unmodified polyester based mortars, thus indicating the feasibility of GFRP waste reuse in concrete-polymer composites.

In the present study three techniques for obtaining outer membrane enriched fractions from Yersinia pestis were evaluated. The techniques analysed were: differential solubilization of the cytoplasmic membrane with Sarkosyl or Triton X-100, and centrifugation in sucrose density gradients. The sodium dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of outer membrane isolated by the different methods resulted in similar protein patterns. The measurement of NADH-dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase (inner membrane enzymes) indicated that the outer membrane preparations obtained by the three methods were pure enough for analytical studies. In addition, preliminary evidences on the potential use of outer membrane proteins for the identification of geographic variants of Y. pestis wild isolates are presented.

Cellulose acetate (CA)-silver (Ag) nanocomposite asymmetric membranes were prepared via the wet-phase inversion method by dispersing polyvinylpirrolydone-protected Ag nanoparticles in the membrane casting solutions of different compositions. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized ex situ and added to the casting solution as a concentrated aqueous colloidal dispersion. The effects of the dispersion addition on the structure and on the selective permeation properties of the membranes were studied by comparing the nanocomposites with the silver-free materials. The casting solution composition played an important role in the adequate dispersion of the silver nanoparticles in the membrane. Incorporation of nanoscale silver and the final silver content resulted in structural changes leading to an increase in the hydraulic permeability and molecular weight cut-off of the nanocomposite membranes. Nesta dissertação pretendeu-se estudar a viabilidade do uso de eletrodiálise com membranas bipolares (BM) na recuperação de ácido clorídrico e de hidróxido de sódio a partir de um efluente industrial que contém 1.4 mol/L de cloreto de sódio. Estas membranas mostraram ser uma ferramenta eficiente para a produção de ácidos e bases a partir do respetivo sal. Foi feita uma seleção de diferentes membranas bipolares (Neosepta, Fumatech e PCA) e aniónicas (PC-SA e PC-ACID 60) na tentativa de encontrar a combinação mais adequada para o tratamento do efluente. Dependendo do critério, o melhor arranjo de membranas é o uso de PC-ACID 60 (membrana aniónica), PC-SK (membrana catiónica) e membranas bipolares do tipo Neosepta para maior pureza dos produtos; membranas bipolares Fumatech para maior eficiência de dessalinização e membranas bipolares PCA para um maior grau de dessalinização. Tecnologicamente foi possível obter uma dessalinização de 99.8% em quatro horas de funcionamento em modo batch com recirculação de todas as correntes. Independentemente da combinação usada é recomendável que o processo seja parado quando a densidade de corrente deixa de ser máxima, 781 A/m2. Assim é possível evitar o aumento de impurezas nos produtos, contra difusão, descida instantânea do pH e uma dessalinização pouco eficiente. A nível piloto o principal fornecedor de membranas e unidade de tratamento “stack” é a marca alemã PCA. Sendo assim realizaram-se ensaios de repetibilidade, contra difusão, avaliação económica e upscaling utilizando as membranas bipolares PCA. A nível económico estudou-se o uso de dois tipos de unidades de tratamento; EDQ 380 e EDQ 1600, para diferentes níveis de dessalinização (50, 75 e 80%). Tendo em conta a otimização económica, é recomendável uma dessalinização máxima de 80%, uma vez que a eficiência de processo a este ponto é de 40%. A aplicação do método com a unidade EDQ 1600 para uma dessalinização de 50% é a mais vantajosa economicamente, com custos de 16 €/m3 de efluente tratado ou 0,78 €/kg Cl- removido. O número de unidades necessárias é 4 posicionados em série.

O conforto é uma necessidade para a maioria das pessoas. A busca de vestuário que se adapte às condições ambientais tornou-se essencial. Queremos materiais que nos mantenham quentes ou frescos, em condições de frio ou calor, e sejam capazes de nos manter secos se chover, ou se transpirarmos, devido a actividade intensa, ou simplesmente porque está quente. O objectivo principal deste trabalho era desenvolver uma estrutura multicamada respirável, para posterior aplicação num sapato perfurado, tornando-o respirável e impermeável. São já aplicados em peças de roupa e calçado, materiais que permitem essa gestão de calor e humidade – as membranas. Neste trabalho, foram apresentadas algumas membranas, de fabricantes e materiais diferentes, que foram testadas de modo a obter valores para a transmissão de vapor de água e classificá-las quanto à sua respirabilidade, relativamente a uma membrana de referência. Foram feitos testes com as membranas isoladas, laminadas e com sobreposição de duas membranas laminadas. Verificou-se que a laminagem não diminuía, substancialmente, a respirabilidade das membranas. Já a sobreposição de membranas, demonstrou diminuir em 35 % a respirabilidade das membranas. A membrana com melhor desempenho é constituída por um polímero de base éter e blocos de amida (PEBA). Ainda pouco aplicado em vestuário e calçado, mas com algum potencial, são os não-tecidos impregnados com polímeros super absorventes (SAP’s). Estes podem absorver até 500 vezes o seu peso em água, dependendo da quantidade de SAP’s com que o não tecido é impregnado e da aplicação final. Esta capacidade de adsorção seria uma mais-valia, em condições de chuva intensa, mas por outro lado, se atingir a saturação, não permite a entrada ou saída de ar, o que poderia levar a desconforto no utilizador. Por fim, foi utilizado um manequim térmico (pé), onde se testaram diferentes calçados, verificando-se que só é possível perder calor e vapor de água pela sola do sapato se esta se encontrar perfurada e utilizar um sistema respirável. Futuramente, pretende-se aplicar uma outra camada de não-tecido, na outra face das membranas já testadas, de modo a criar um sistema de 3 camadas, e testar a sua respirabilidade. Sugere-se, também, criar uma estrutura sólida e arejada para utilizar os não-tecidos impregnados em SAPs. Posteriormente, deve-se aplicar estas estruturas num sapato com a sola perfurada e testá-las no manequim térmico.
