A whale shark, Rhincodon typus, was incidentally captured off Ceará on January 2009, during gillnet fishery. This is the second occurrence record for this species off the State and the first including material deposited in a scientific collection.

The recovery of phenolic compounds of Eugenia pyriformis using different solvents was investigated in this study. The compounds were identified and quantified by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet-visible diode-array detector (RP-HPLC-DAD/UV-vis). Absolute methanol was the most effective extraction agent of phenolic acids and flavonols (588.31 mg/Kg) from Eugenia pyriformis, although similar results (p ≤ 0.05) were observed using methanol/water (1:1 ratio). Our results clearly showed that higher contents of phenolic compounds were not obtained either with the most or the least polar solvents used. Several phenolic compounds were identified in the samples whereas gallic acid and quercetin were the major compounds recovered. © 2012 Association of Food Scientists & Technologists (India).

Coastal cities attract a large number of tourists for their beautiful landscape and recreational activities, increasing the municipalities' income source. Thus, a need is clear for the establishment of beach quality monitoring programs to ensure bathers health. Although there is an effective monitoring program for recreational waters in Brazil there are no programs to certify the quality of beach sands. In this sense, the aim of this work was to analyze the density of bacteria from the genus Enterococcus in both sand and water from two beaches from São Vicente, São Paulo (Brazil) and correlate these densities to abiotic parameters such as: temperature, salinity, particle size, organic matter and tides). Water and sand samples were collected during February 2006 on the beaches of Gonzaguinha e Ilha Porchat and bacterial densities were determined by membrane filter technique. Temperature and salinity were measured in situ with a thermometer and a refractometer while particle size and organic matter were determined according to methods described by Suguio and Dean. There were significant differences between densities found in water and sand (p=0.004), being approximately 20 times higher in Gonzaguinha's beach sands. Similar results were found for Ilha Porchat beach samples, being the densities found in sand 3 times greater than those found in water. Both beaches showed a negative correlation between bacterial densities and salinity and temperature, suggesting a deleterious effect of these parameters on the bacterial community. On the other hand, no correlation was found between organic matter and particle size and bacterial densities. This work demonstrates that there is a great necessity for monitoring beach sand since the evaluation of beach quality is an important part of integrated coastal management programs.

Santos-São Vicente Estuarine System is a highly populated coastal zone in Brazil and where it is located the major port of Latin America. Historically, port activities, industrial and domestic effluents discharges have constituted the main sources of contaminants to estuarine system. This study aimed to assess the recent status of sediment quality from 5 zones of Port of Santos by applying a lines-of-evidence approach through integrating results of: (1) acute toxicity of whole sediment and chronic toxicity of liquid phases; (2) grain size, organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, linear alkylbenzenes and butyltins; (3) benthic community descriptors. Results revealed a gradient of increasing contamination for metals and organic compounds, alongside with their geochemical carriers. Sediment liquid phases were more toxic compared to whole sediment. Low number of species and individuals indicated the impoverishment of benthic community. The use of site-specific sediment quality guidelines was more appropriate to predict sediment toxicity. The integration of results through Sediment Quality Triad approach and principal component analysis allowed observing the effects of natural stressors and dredging on sediment quality and benthic distribution. Even with recent governmental efforts to control, pollution is still relevant in Port of Santos and a threat to local ecosystems. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Quatro tipos morfológico-texturais de quartzo, informalmente denominados Qz1, Qz2, Qz3 e Qz4, foram identificados nas diferentes fácies do Granito Antônio Vicente, Província Carajás, por meio de imagens de microscopia eletrônica de varredura-catodoluminescência (MEV-CL). Nas rochas menos evoluídas, contendo anfibólio e biotita, dominam cristais anédricos a subédricos bem desenvolvidos, luminescentes e intensamente fraturados (Qz1). Fluidos hidrotermais que percolaram o granito transformaram o quartzo magmático (Qz1) em Qz2 e Qz3 por meio de processos de alteração, dissolução e recristalização, sendo essas transformações muito mais evidentes nas rochas sienograníticas intensamente alteradas. O Qz4 forma cristais médios a grossos, geralmente luminescentes e comparativamente pouco fraturados. Sua ocorrência é restrita às rochas sienograníticas fortemente hidrotermalizadas e aos corpos de greisens, sugerindo o início do processo de greisenização. Nos greisens, dominam cristais de quartzo euédricos médios a grossos, zonados concentricamente e com feições típicas de origem hidrotermal (Qz5). Finos cristais de cassiterita zonada (≤ 100 µm) são comuns e preenchem cavidades nos tipos Qz4 e Qz5. Zircões dominantemente anédricos, corroídos, com os mais elevados conteúdos de Hf e as mais baixas razões Zr/Hf, pertencem às rochas mais evoluídas e alteradas hidrotermalmente e aos corpos de greisens associados, ambos portadores de mineralizações de Sn. Tal fato sugere que a assinatura geoquímica do zircão, em especial a razão Zr/Hf, pode ser utilizada na avaliação preliminar do potencial metalogenético de granitos estaníferos.

Propor à leitura dois paratextos imagéticos: o retrato de Jean de La Taille, composto de um medalhão oval que contém um epigrama, e a imagem in absentia de Gil Vicente, que se apresenta sob a forma de um enquadramento retangular do qual participam motivos ornamentais e igualmente um epigrama. A leitura destas imagens autorais apresenta a hipótese de uma representação visual, ou mesmo icônica, da atitude literária de dois dramaturgos que se apresentam ao leitor, ao mesmo tempo em que se presentificam, a fim de indicar a maneira mais conveniente de se aproximar da obra - processo essencialmente retórico conhecido sob a apelação de captatio benevolentiae. Palavras-chave: Retrato; paratexto; imagem; representação; interpelação; persuasão; figuração.
