Today the high-price mechanical wristwatch is recognized as a luxury object redolent with notions of adventure, sporting achievement, elevated social status, and technical precision. Through an examination of the segmentation of the current luxury wristwatch market and key moments in the historical development of the wristwatch, this article will explain why these connotations exist. In particular, the article will explain the role that the early development of the wristwatch as a piece of military technical equipment and the mechanical wristwatch’s revitalization as a luxury good in response to the development of commercial quartz timekeeping technology have played in reconstructing the wristwatch as an object type. By utilizing network theory and the analytical tool of complexity, and drawing on fieldwork undertaken in London and Switzerland amongst the manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and consumers of high-value wristwatches, the article will explain how the wristwatch can simultaneously be seen as functional tool, fashion statement, status symbol, and anachronism. This insight into the true nature of the wristwatch as a multivalent and semiotically charged object will also be used to inform reflections on the likely impact of generally perceived current threats to the luxury watch industry: the rise in ethical material sourcing campaigns, the stubborn gender imbalance in watch sales, and the recent appearance of smart watches and similar digital devices.

This thesis examines topographical art depicting Scotland’s natural scenery and built environments, architecture, antiquities and signs of modern improvement, made during the period 1660 to 1820. It sets out to demonstrate that topography and topographical art was not exclusively antiquarian in nature, but ranged across various fields of learning and practice. It included the work of artists, geographers, cartographers, travel writers, poets, landscape gardeners, military surveyors, naturalists and historians who were concerned with representing the country’s varied, and often contentious, histories within an increasingly modernising present. The visual images that are considered here were forms of knowledge that found expression in drawings, paintings and engravings, elevations, views and plans. They were made on military surveys and picturesque tours, and were often intended to be included alongside written texts, both published and unpublished, frequently connecting with travels, tours, memoirs, essays and correspondence. It will also be argued that topography was a social practice, involving networks of artists, collectors, publishers and writers, who exchanged information in drawings and letters in a nationwide, and often increasingly commercial enterprise. This thesis will explore some of the strands of such a vast network of picture-making that existed in Scotland, and Britain, between 1660 and 1820, as visual images were circulated, copied, recycled and adapted, and topographical and antiquarian visual culture emerges as a complex, synoptic form of inquiry.

___________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT

Gender differences in collaborative research have received little at- tention when compared with the growing importance that women hold in academia and research. Unsurprisingly, most of bibliomet- ric databases have a strong lack of directly available information by gender. Although empirical-based network approaches are often used in the study of research collaboration, the studies about the influence of gender dissimilarities on the resulting topological outcomes are still scarce. Here, networks of scientific subjects are used to characterize patterns that might be associated to five categories of authorships which were built based on gender. We find enough evidence that gen- der imbalance in scientific authorships brings a peculiar trait to the networks induced from papers published in Web of Science (WoS) in- dexed journals of Economics over the period 2010-2015 and having at least one author affiliated to a Portuguese institution. Our re- sults show the emergence of a specific pattern when the network of co-occurring subjects is induced from a set of papers exclusively au- thored by men. Such a male-exclusive authorship condition is found to be the solely responsible for the emergence that particular shape in the network structure. This peculiar trait might facilitate future network analyses of research collaboration and interdisciplinarity.

Understanding the complexity of live pig trade organization is a key factor to predict and control major infectious diseases, such as classical swine fever (CSF) or African swine fever (ASF). Whereas the organization of pig trade has been described in several European countries with indoor commercial production systems, little information is available on this organization in other systems, such as outdoor or small-scale systems. The objective of this study was to describe and compare the spatial and functional organization of live pig trade in different European countries and different production systems. Data on premise characteristics and pig movements between premises were collected during 2011 from Bulgaria, France, Italy, and Spain, which swine industry is representative of most of the production systems in Europe (i.e., commercial vs. small-scale and outdoor vs. indoor). Trade communities were identified in each country using the Walktrap algorithm. Several descriptive and network metrics were generated at country and community levels. Pig trade organization showed heterogeneous spatial and functional organization. Trade communities mostly composed of indoor commercial premises were identified in western France, northern Italy, northern Spain, and north-western Bulgaria. They covered large distances, overlapped in space, demonstrated both scale-free and small-world properties, with a role of trade operators and multipliers as key premises. Trade communities involving outdoor commercial premises were identified in western Spain, south-western and central France. They were more spatially clustered, demonstrated scale-free properties, with multipliers as key premises. Small-scale communities involved the majority of premises in Bulgaria and in central and Southern Italy. They were spatially clustered and had scale-free properties, with key premises usually being commercial production premises. These results indicate that a disease might spread very differently according to the production system and that key premises could be targeted to more cost-effectively control diseases. This study provides useful epidemiological information and parameters that could be used to design risk-based surveillance strategies or to more accurately model the risk of introduction or spread of devastating swine diseases, such as ASF, CSF, or foot-and-mouth disease.

Abstract Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide and, therefore, deserves the highest attention and assistance from medical services. Considering patients’ satisfaction as an indication of healthcare quality, women who have undergone a mastectomy will assess the medical care received. This assessment will be based on what is expected from that medical care and on the expected improvement of her health condition. . Objective: To determine the level of satisfaction of women who have undergone a mastectomy with the medical care provided by nurses, doctors and by the way hospital services are organized. Design: A descriptive and cross-sectional study, developed in Portugal. Participants: A non-probabilistic sample formed by 153 women who underwent a mastectomy with an average age of 55, married (67.3%), unemployed (56.2%), living in a rural area (71.2%) and living on minimum wage (54.9%). Measurement instrument: European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) IN-PATSAT32 questionnaire. Results: 113 (73.85%) of the 153 women are satisied with the medical care provided and 40 (26.14%) of them show their lack of satisfaction. A highly signiicant percentage of women (49.01%) feel fairly satisied with the medical care provided by nurses and with the way services are organized (37.9). On the other hand (37.9%) show their dissatisfaction towards doctors. The family network proved to be a predictor of the satisfaction with doctors (β = 0.163; P = .044) and the period of hospitalization predicts the satisfaction with the organization (β = 0.171; P = .011). Both predictors will be useful to explain the 3% variability in patients’ satisfaction. Conclusions: Monitoring the satisfaction with the medical care received is a fundamental strategy to promote the well-being of women who underwent a mastectomy.

In this thesis we will see that the DNA sequence is constantly shaped by the interactions with its environment at multiple levels, showing footprints of DNA methylation, of its 3D organization and, in the case of bacteria, of the interaction with the host organisms. In the first chapter, we will see that analyzing the distribution of distances between consecutive dinucleotides of the same type along the sequence, we can detect epigenetic and structural footprints. In particular, we will see that CG distance distribution allows to distinguish among organisms of different biological complexity, depending on how much CG sites are involved in DNA methylation. Moreover, we will see that CG and TA can be described by the same fitting function, suggesting a relationship between the two. We will also provide an interpretation of the observed trend, simulating a positioning process guided by the presence and absence of memory. In the end, we will focus on TA distance distribution, characterizing deviations from the trend predicted by the best fitting function, and identifying specific patterns that might be related to peculiar mechanical properties of the DNA and also to epigenetic and structural processes. In the second chapter, we will see how we can map the 3D structure of the DNA onto its sequence. In particular, we devised a network-based algorithm that produces a genome assembly starting from its 3D configuration, using as inputs Hi-C contact maps. Specifically, we will see how we can identify the different chromosomes and reconstruct their sequences by exploiting the spectral properties of the Laplacian operator of a network. In the third chapter, we will see a novel method for source clustering and source attribution, based on a network approach, that allows to identify host-bacteria interaction starting from the detection of Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms along the sequence of bacterial genomes.

Growing evidence indicates that cell and nuclear deformability plays a crucial role in the determination of cancer cells tumorigenic and metastatic potential. The perinuclear actin cap, by wrapping the nucleus with a functional network of actomyosin cables, can modulate nuclear architecture and consequently cell/nuclear elasticity. The hepatocyte growth factor receptor (MET) stands out among other membrane receptors as crucial player of the actin filaments organization, but no data are available on a specific role for MET in the actin cap assembly and the overall nuclear architecture organization. In a cell system characterized by MET hyperactivation, we observed a strong rearrangement of the cellular actin caps, with a complete dismantling of apical stress fibers and a strikingly enhanced nuclear height. CRISPR/Cas9 silencing of MET completely reverted the aberrant phenotype, resulting in flattened cells with perfectly aligned perinuclear actomyosin bundles, as well as decreased MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling, cell proliferation rate and aggressiveness. Interestingly, MET ablated cells acquired a remarkably directed and polarized migratory phenotype, contrarily to cells with MET sustained activation showing meandering random walk. A pathway enrichment analysis comparing MET-activated and MET-KO cells RNAseq data, unveiled the contribution of multiple pathways associated with cytoskeleton remodeling, regulation of cell shape and response to mechanical stimuli. In line, the co-transcriptional activator YAP1, playing a major role in cell mechanosensing and focal adhesions/actin stabilization, appeared the culprit of the genetic reassembling of KO cells. Indeed, MET silencing was shown to induce YAP1 nuclear shuttling and increased co-transcriptional activity. Finally, we were able to induce in a normal epithelial model a phenotype closer to MET activated cancer cells only by introducing a constitutive fusion protein of MET. Taken together, our results demonstrate a new mechanism of MET-mediated actin remodeling responsible for a tumor-initiating capacity and meandering random migration, which requires YAP1 inactivation.

Disconnectivity between the Default Mode Network (DMN) nodes can cause clinical symptoms and cognitive deficits in Alzheimer׳s disease (AD). We aimed to examine the structural connectivity between DMN nodes, to verify the extent in which white matter disconnection affects cognitive performance. MRI data of 76 subjects (25 mild AD, 21 amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment subjects and 30 controls) were acquired on a 3.0T scanner. ExploreDTI software (fractional Anisotropy threshold=0.25 and the angular threshold=60°) calculated axial, radial, and mean diffusivities, fractional anisotropy and streamline count. AD patients showed lower fractional anisotropy (P=0.01) and streamline count (P=0.029), and higher radial diffusivity (P=0.014) than controls in the cingulum. After correction for white matter atrophy, only fractional anisotropy and radial diffusivity remained significantly lower in AD compared to controls (P=0.003 and P=0.05). In the parahippocampal bundle, AD patients had lower mean and radial diffusivities (P=0.048 and P=0.013) compared to controls, from which only radial diffusivity survived for white matter adjustment (P=0.05). Regression models revealed that cognitive performance is also accounted for by white matter microstructural values. Structural connectivity within the DMN is important to the execution of high-complexity tasks, probably due to its relevant role in the integration of the network.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms of oral carcinogenesis will yield important advances in diagnostics, prognostics, effective treatment, and outcome of oral cancer. Hence, in this study we have investigated the proteomic and peptidomic profiles by combining an orthotopic murine model of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), mass spectrometry-based proteomics and biological network analysis. Our results indicated the up-regulation of proteins involved in actin cytoskeleton organization and cell-cell junction assembly events and their expression was validated in human OSCC tissues. In addition, the functional relevance of talin-1 in OSCC adhesion, migration and invasion was demonstrated. Taken together, this study identified specific processes deregulated in oral cancer and provided novel refined OSCC-targeting molecules.

The article seeks to investigate patterns of performance and relationships between grip strength, gait speed and self-rated health, and investigate the relationships between them, considering the variables of gender, age and family income. This was conducted in a probabilistic sample of community-dwelling elderly aged 65 and over, members of a population study on frailty. A total of 689 elderly people without cognitive deficit suggestive of dementia underwent tests of gait speed and grip strength. Comparisons between groups were based on low, medium and high speed and strength. Self-related health was assessed using a 5-point scale. The males and the younger elderly individuals scored significantly higher on grip strength and gait speed than the female and oldest did; the richest scored higher than the poorest on grip strength and gait speed; females and men aged over 80 had weaker grip strength and lower gait speed; slow gait speed and low income arose as risk factors for a worse health evaluation. Lower muscular strength affects the self-rated assessment of health because it results in a reduction in functional capacity, especially in the presence of poverty and a lack of compensatory factors.
