Size effects of mechanical behaviors of materials are referred to the variation of the mechanical behavior due to the sample sizes changing from macroscale to micro-/nanoscales. At the micro-/nanoscale, since sample has a relatively high specific surface area (SSA) (ratio of surface area to volume), the surface although it is often neglected at the macroscale, becomes prominent in governing the energy effect, although it is often neglected at the macroscale, becomes prominent in governing the mechanical behavior. In the present research, a continuum model considering the surface energy effect is developed through introducing the surface energy to total potential energy. Simultaneously, a corresponding finite element method is developed. The model is used to analyze the axial equilibrium strain problem for a Cu nanowire at the external loading-free state. As another application of the model, from dimensional analysis, the size effects of uniform compression tests on the microscale cylinder specimens for Ni and Au single crystals are analyzed and compared with experiments in literatures. Nanostructured tungsten trioxide (WO3) photoelectrodes are potential candidates for the anodic portion of an integrated solar water-splitting device that generates hydrogen fuel and oxygen from water. These nanostructured materials can potentially offer improved performance in photooxidation reactions compared to unstructured materials because of enhancements in light scattering, increases in surface area, and their decoupling of the directions of light absorption and carrier collection. To evaluate the presence of these effects and their contributions toward energy conversion efficiency, a variety of nanostructured WO3 photoanodes were synthesized by electrodeposition within nanoporous templates and by anodization of tungsten foils. A robust fabrication process was developed for the creation of oriented WO3 nanorod arrays, which allows for control nanorod diameter and length. Films of nanostructured WO3 platelets were grown via anodization, the morphology of the films was controlled by the anodization conditions, and the current-voltage performance and spectral response properties of these films were studied. The observed photocurrents were consistent with the apparent morphologies of the nanostructured arrays. Measurements of electrochemically active surface area and other physical characteristics were correlated with observed differences in absorbance, external quantum yield, and photocurrent density for the anodized arrays. The capability to quantify these characteristics and relate them to photoanode performance metrics can allow for selection of appropriate structural parameters when designing photoanodes for solar energy conversion.

[EN]In this report we present the tags we use when annotating the gold standard of syntactic functions and the decisions taken during its annotation. The gold standard is a necessary resource to evaluate the rulebased surface syntactic parser (the one based on the Constraint Grammar formalism), and, moreover, it can be useful to develop and evaluate statistical parsers. The tags we are presenting here follow the Constraint Grammar (CG) formalism (Karlsson et al., 1995). In fact, last experiments show that good results have been obtained when parsing with CG (Karlsson et al., 1995; Samuelsson and Voutilainen,1997; Tapanainen and Järvinen, 1997; Bick, 2000).

The presence of giant diamagnetism in Au nanorods, NRs, is shown to be a possible consequence of field induced currents in the surface electrons. The distance, Delta , between quantum surface energy levels has been calculated as a function of the NRs radius. Note that those electrons occupying states for which Delta > k(B)T are steadily orbiting with constant orbital moment. The diamagnetic response induced when a field is turned on remains constant during the time the field is acting. As the NRs radius increases, Delta decreases and accordingly the electron fraction available to generate constant currents decreases, consequently the surface diamagnetic susceptibility decreases towards its bulk value. The surface electronic motion induced by the axial applied field on electrons confined into a cylindrical surface accounts with extremely good quantitative agreement for the giant diamagnetism recently measured and reported.

TiO2 films deposited by electron beam evaporation with glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique were reported. The influence of flux angle on the surface morphology and the microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The GLAD TiO2 films are anisotropy with highly orientated nanostructure of the slanted columns. With the increase of flux angle, refractive index and packing density decrease. This is caused by the shadowing effect dominating film growth. The anisotropic structure of TiO2 films results in optical birefringence, which reaches its maximum at the flux angle alpha = 65 degrees. The maximum birefringence of GLAD TiO2 films is higher than that of common bulk materials. It is suggested that glancing angle deposition may offer an effective method to obtain tailorable refractive index and birefringence in a large continuous range. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Gold-decorated silica nanoparticles were synthesized in a two-step process in which silica nanoparticles were produced by chemical vapor synthesis using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and subsequently decorated using two different gas-phase evaporative techniques. Both evaporative processes resulted in gold decoration of the silica particles. This study compares the mechanisms of particle decoration for a production method in which the gas and particles remain cool to a method in which the entire aerosol is heated. Results of transmission electron microscopy and visible spectroscopy studies indicate that both methods produce particles with similar morphologies and nearly identical absorption spectra, with peak absorption at 500-550 nm. A study of the thermal stability of the particles using heated-TEM indicates that the gold decoration on the particle surface remains stable at temperatures below 900 °C, above which the gold decoration begins to both evaporate and coalesce.

The field emission properties of nanostructured carbon films deposited by cathodic vacuum arc in a He atmosphere have been studied by measuring the emission currents and the emission site density. The films have an onset field of ∼ 3 V/μm. The emission site density is viewed on a phosphor anode and it increases rapidly with applied field. It is assumed that the emission occurs from surface regions with a range of field enhancement factors but with a constant work function. The field enhancement factor is found to have an exponential distribution.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a well-established spectroscopic technique that requires nanoscale metal structures to achieve high signal sensitivity. While most SERS substrates are manufactured by conventional lithographic methods, the development of a cost-effective approach to create nanostructured surfaces is a much sought-after goal in the SERS community. Here, a method is established to create controlled, self-organized, hierarchical nanostructures using electrohydrodynamic (HEHD) instabilities. The created structures are readily fine-tuned, which is an important requirement for optimizing SERS to obtain the highest enhancements. HEHD pattern formation enables the fabrication of multiscale 3D structured arrays as SERS-active platforms. Importantly, each of the HEHD-patterned individual structural units yield a considerable SERS enhancement. This enables each single unit to function as an isolated sensor. Each of the formed structures can be effectively tuned and tailored to provide high SERS enhancement, while arising from different HEHD morphologies. The HEHD fabrication of sub-micrometer architectures is straightforward and robust, providing an elegant route for high-throughput biological and chemical sensing.

On page OP 175, U. Steiner and co-workers destabilise polymer trilayer films using an electric field to generate separated micrometre-sized core-shell pillars, which are further modified by selective polymer dissolution to yield polymer core columns surrounded by a rim and micro-volcano rim structures. When coated with gold and decorated with Raman active probes, all three structure types give rise to substantial enhancement in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Since this SERS enhancement arises from each of the isolated structures in the array, these surface patterns are an ideal platform for multiplexed SERS detection.
Optimized vertical carbon nanotube forests for multiplex surface-enhanced raman scattering detection

The highly sensitive and molecule-specific technique of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) generates high signal enhancements via localized optical fields on nanoscale metallic materials, which can be tuned by manipulation of the surface roughness and architecture on the submicrometer level. We investigate gold-functionalized vertically aligned carbon nanotube forests (VACNTs) as low-cost straightforward SERS nanoplatforms. We find that their SERS enhancements depend on their diameter and density, which are systematically optimized for their performance. Modeling of the VACNT-based SERS substrates confirms consistent dependence on structural parameters as observed experimentally. The created nanostructures span over large substrate areas, are readily configurable, and yield uniform and reproducible SERS enhancement factors. Further fabricated micropatterned VACNTs platforms are shown to deliver multiplexed SERS detection. The unique properties of CNTs, which can be synergistically utilized in VACNT-based substrates and patterned arrays, can thus provide new generation platforms for SERS detection. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Widespread approaches to fabricate surfaces with robust micro- and nanostructured topographies have been stimulated by opportunities to enhance interface performance by combining physical and chemical effects. In particular, arrays of asymmetric surface features, such as arrays of grooves, inclined pillars, and helical protrusions, have been shown to impart unique anisotropy in properties including wetting, adhesion, thermal and/or electrical conductivity, optical activity, and capability to direct cell growth. These properties are of wide interest for applications including energy conversion, microelectronics, chemical and biological sensing, and bioengineering. However, fabrication of asymmetric surface features often pushes the limits of traditional etching and deposition techniques, making it challenging to produce the desired surfaces in a scalable and cost-effective manner. We review and classify approaches to fabricate arrays of asymmetric 2D and 3D surface features, in polymers, metals, and ceramics. Analytical and empirical relationships among geometries, materials, and surface properties are discussed, especially in the context of the applications mentioned above. Further, opportunities for new fabrication methods that combine lithography with principles of self-assembly are identified, aiming to establish design principles for fabrication of arbitrary 3D surface textures over large areas. Centrifuge coating was implemented to fabricate nanostructured conductive layers through solution processing at room temperature. This coating procedure allows fast evaporation, thereby fixing the nanomaterials in their dispersed state onto a substrate by the centrifuge action. Material wastes were minimized by mitigating the effects of particle reaggregation. Using this method, we fabricate single-wall nanotube coatings on different substrates such as polyethylene terephthalate, polydimethylsiloxane, and an acrylic elastomer with no prior surface modification of the substrate. The effects of the choice of solvents on the morphology and subsequent performance of the coating network are studied. © 2002-2012 IEEE.
