This project was designed to ascertain the defining attributes of midlife that render it distinct from young and older adulthood. Based on the determined salient factors the Midlife Adjustment Scale was developed and the nature of midlife, that of a transitional period, was established. The scale was then used to assess the influence that perceived control and major life events have on one's adjustment during the middle years.

The fairytale motif of the red shoes continues to fascinate many contemporary authors and artists. What inspires these obsessive and contagious narratives? The raw, unfettered femaleness of the red shoes, reminiscent of the pre-oedipal realm, suggests a means of escaping confining patriarchal conceptions of woman, desire and creativity.

This thesis proposes a new model of disordered eating and tests it using a longitudinal design. The Expectancy Model of Disordered Eating maintains that dieting and binge eating can best be explained as a predisposition towards avoidance coping which is triggered by outcome expectancies and negative affect or low self-esteem.

This thesis examines the importance of self-esteem, its dominant role in psychological research, and how low self-esteem is implicated in a wide variety of emotional and behavioural disorders. The Sociometry Model of Self-esteem is used to explain the relationship between self-esteem and psychological distress and portrays self-esteem as a guage by which people monitor their level of social inclusion. Four case-studies are presented.

The cognitive and motivational explanations of Unique Invulnerability (UI) for unwanted pregnancy (whereby individuals believe that their risk is less than that of the average female) were contrasted. Eight studies were conducted. Contrary to popular belief, it was found that the two different measures of UI (indirect-comparison (ICQ) and direct-comparison (DCQ)) were not equivalent; the findings suggest that while UI tapped by ICQs is cognitive in nature, UI tapped by DCQs is motivational in nature

The findings of this thesis supported a model proposed to explain the influence of psychological factors on subjective quality of life. In comparison with their partners, and with a control group, people with MS reported a lowered subjective quality of life and self-esteem, an increased need for social support, and maladaptive use of control. Recommendations for interventions were made based on these findings.

This thesis showed that as samples move from a homeostatic position of high-normal subjective quality of life, to normal, to low-normal subjective quality of life, the contributions of personality (extroversion and neuroticism) and perceived control (approach and avoidant control) to the maintenance of subjective quality of life becomes more complicated

The thesis examined systemic factors that placed children in stepfamilies at greater risk of physical abuse and neglect by comparing differences between biological- and step-families on a number of known risk factors. A model describing the pathway of child abuse and neglect for children living in stepfamilies was developed to aid in prevention. The portfolio presents four case studies which demonstrate the impact of disruptions to attachment experiences and the sequelae on psychological functioning and how the associated affect dysregulation may be linked to attachment disruptions.

This thesis examined the subjective emotional responses of women to depictions of violent and sexually violent film. Findings highlighted the significance of contextual factors, such as the gender of the perpetrator and victim upon viewers, and found that exposure to sexual violence in the media has important implications for women. The portfolio's four case studies demonstrate the complexities involved in making risk judgements and treatment planning given the diversity of offences and needs, as well as the implications these decisions can have when determining the amenability of offenders to specific sex offender treatment.

The thesis examined variables that could potentially mediate the relationship between child abuse and eating pathology. The relationship was found to be intricate and multi-faceted with important gender differences. The most novel finding was that drive for muscularity was significantly associated with child abuse in males and in females. The portfolio presents four adult case studies, each with different experiences of child abuse. It aims to examine if the core tenets of neurobiological theory of trauma can be useful to understand the lasting effects of child abuse on adult functioning.

Interviews with women regarding their experiences of sexual desire informed the development of the Female Sexual Desire Questionnaire. A validation sample of 741 women completed this questionnaire, with six interrelated factors found. These components of sexual desire were labelled: Dyadic Desire, Solitary Desire, Resistance, Positive Relationship, Sexual Self-image, and Concern. The portfolio concludes that a standard evaluation process is needed to assess the effectiveness of men's behaviour change groups (MBCGs), and that such programs should comprise only one component of a comprehensive multifaceted intervention strategy against intimate partner violence (IPV). Four case studies are presented.
