In contradiction to the prediction of the Periodic Table but in agreement with earlier suggestions by Brewer and Mann, the ground state configuration of atomic Lawrencium (Z = 103) will not be 7s^2 6d^2 D_3/2 but 7s^2 7p ^2p_1/2. The reason for this deviation from normal trends across the Periodic Table are strong relativistic effects on the outermost 7P_l/2 orbital. Multicontiguration Dirac-Fock calculations are reported for Lawrencium and analogous lighter atoms. These calculations include contributions from magnetic and retardation interactions and an estimation of quantum electrodynamic corrections.

A set of parametrized equations has been published by Bratsch and Lagowski for calculating thermodynamic properties of the lanthanides, actinides, element 104, and certainrelated elements. Since these equations were applied to element 104, new values for the first four ionization energies and radii of the ions of charge +1, +2, +3, and +4 have been calculated for this element. The parametrized equations are used here with these new values to calculate some thermodynamic properties of element 104.

La sang de porc és un subproducte comestible que es genera als escorxadors industrials durant el procés d'obtenció de la canal. Aquest subproducte es caracteritza per presentar una elevada càrrega contaminant i, degut a l'elevat volum que es genera, és necessari trobar estratègies que permetin la seva revaloració i aprofitament, a la vegada que disminuïm la contaminació ambiental i les despeses que es deriven del seu processament abans de l'abocament. La fracció cel·lular (FC) constitueix el 40 % de la sang de porc i conté principalment l'hemoglobina (Hb), que representa al voltant del 90 % del contingut en proteïna d'aquesta fracció (un 35 % aproximadament). L'elevat percentatge en proteïna i en ferro, i les seves bones propietats funcionals fan que l'aprofitament d'aquest subproducte com a primera matèria o ingredient de la indústria alimentària sigui una alternativa molt útil a l'hora de reduir les despeses de la indústria càrnia, sempre que es resolguin els problemes de l'enfosquiment i dels sabors estranys que pot conferir la FC quan s'addiciona a productes alimentaris. Una altra possible utilització de la FC és aprofitar les propietats colorants de l'Hb o del grup hemo, com a colorant d'origen natural en diversos productes alimentaris. Els objectius del present treball eren, en primer lloc, determinar les millors condicions d'aplicació del procés de conservació de la FC mitjançant la deshidratació per atomització i caracteritzar físico-químicament i microbiològica el concentrat d'Hb en pols. En segon lloc, avaluar l'eficàcia de diferents additius antioxidants i/o segrestants del ferro per prevenir l'enfosquiment que pateix la FC durant la deshidratació. En tercer lloc, aplicar tractaments d'altes pressions hidrostàtiques com a procés d'higienització i avaluar els efectes d'aquest tractament sobre la microbiota contaminant, el color i les propietats funcionals de la FC. Finalment, desenvolupar un procés d'obtenció d'hidrolitzats proteics descolorats a partir de l'Hb amb la finalitat d'utilitzar-los com a ingredients nutricionals i/o funcionals. La millor temperatura de deshidratació per atomització de la FC hemolitzada era 140ºC. La FC en pols presentava un contingut en humitat del 5,3 % i un percentatge de solubilitat proteica del 96 %. La deshidratació per atomització induïa canvis en l'estructura nativa de l'Hb i, per tant, un cert grau de desnaturalització que pot conduir a una disminució de les seves propietats funcionals. L'extracte sec de la FC en pols estava composat per un 94,6 % de proteïna, un 3 % de sals minerals i un 0,7 % de greix. Els valors CIE L*a*b* del color de la FC en pols eren força constants i reflectien el color vermell marró fosc d'aquesta, a causa de l'oxidació del ferro hèmic que es produeix durant la deshidratació. La càrrega contaminant de la FC fresca de la sang de porc era força elevada i el tractament d'hemòlisi amb ultrasons i la centrifugació posterior no produïen una reducció significativa de la microbiota contaminant, obtenint un producte amb uns recomptes microbiològics de l'ordre de 106 ufc·mL-1. La deshidratació per atomització produïa una disminució d'una unitat logarítmica dels recomptes totals de la FC hemolitzada. Tanmateix, el producte en pols encara reflectia l'elevada contaminació de la primera matèria, fet que condiciona negativament la seva utilització com a ingredient alimentari, a no ser que es millorin les condicions de recollida de la sang a l'escorxador o que aquesta o la FC es sotmeti a algun tractament d'higienització prèviament a la deshidratació. Les isotermes de sorció a 20ºC de la FC en pols tenien forma sigmoïdal i una histèresi estreta i llarga. L'equació GAB és un bon model matemàtic per ajustar les dades de sorció obtingudes experimentalment i determinar la isoterma d'adsorció de la FC deshidratada per atomització. El percentatge d'humitat de la FC deshidratada a 140ºC es corresponia a un valor d'aw a 20 ºC d'aproximadament el 0,16. Tenint en compte que estava per sota dels valors d'aw corresponents a la capa monomolecular, es pot garantir la conservació a temperatura ambient del producte, sempre que s'envasi en recipients tancats que no permetin l'entrada d'humitat de l'exterior. De l'estudi de la possible estabilització del color de la FC deshidratada per atomització mitjançant l'addició d'antioxidants i/o segrestants de ferro, es va observar que només l'àcid ascòrbic, la glucosa, l'àcid nicotínic i la nicotinamida, tenien efectes positius sobre el color del producte en pols. L'ascòrbic i la glucosa no milloraven la conservació del color de l'Hb però disminuïen l'enfosquiment que es produeix durant la deshidratació, amb la qual cosa es pot obtenir un producte en pols de color marró més clar. L'addició de dextrina o L-cisteïna no disminuïa l'enfosquiment ni evitava el canvi de color de l'Hb. L'àcid nicotínic i la nicotinamida protegien el color de l'Hb durant el procés de deshidratació i l'emmagatzematge de la FC en pols. Les millors condicions d'aplicació del tractament amb altes pressions hidrostàtiques (HHP) sobre la FC eren 400 MPa, a 20ºC, durant 15 minuts, perquè produïen una millora significativa de la qualitat microbiològica, no afectaven negativament al color, no comprometien gaire la solubilitat proteica l'Hb i, malgrat que produïen un augment de la viscositat, la FC romania fluida després del tractament. Aquest tractament permetia una reducció de la microbiota contaminant de la FC d'entre 2 i 3 unitats logarítmiques. L'aplicació de l'alta pressió i la posterior deshidratació per atomització permetien obtenir un producte en pols amb recomptes totals de l'ordre de 2,8 unitats logarítmiques. El color de la FC pressuritzada en pols era igual que el de la FC control deshidratada, perquè ambdues mostres presentaven la mateixa susceptibilitat a l'oxidació del grup hemo produïda per la deshidratació. L'alta pressió incrementava la susceptibilitat de l'Hb als efectes desnaturalitzants de la deshidratació, fonamentalment a pH 7 (PIE), ja que es va observar una disminució de la solubilitat proteica a pH neutre després dels 2 processos tecnològics. La FC en pols presentava una màxima capacitat escumant al PIE de l'Hb. L'aplicació del tractament HHP produïa una disminució de la capacitat escumant de la FC en pols, però no tenia efectes negatius sobre l'estabilitat de l'escuma formada. Tampoc es van observar efectes negatius del tractament HHP sobre l'activitat emulsionant de l'Hb. La màxima activitat emulsionant de l'Hb s'aconseguia amb una concentració de FC en pols de l'1,5 % a pH 7 i de l'1 % a pH 4,5. Les pastes obtingudes per escalfament de la FC presentaven característiques molt diferenciades depenent del pH. A pH neutre es formaven unes pastes dures i consistents, mentre que a pH àcid les pastes eren poc consistents, molt adhesives i més elàstiques que les anteriors. Aquestes tenien una capacitat de retenció d'aigua molt superior que les de pH 7, en les quals l'aigua quedava retinguda per capil·laritat. La textura i capacitat de retenció d'aigua de les pastes tampoc eren afectades pel tractament HHP. El tractament HHP incrementava l'activitat de la Tripsina sobre l'Hb quan el substrat i l'enzim es tractaven conjuntament i afavoria el procés d'obtenció d'hidrolitzats descolorats a partir de la FC, la qual cosa permetia assolir el mateix grau de descoloració amb una dosi d'enzim inferior. El tractament d'hidròlisi de la FC amb la utilització combinada de Tripsina seguida d'un tractament amb Pepsina permetia l'obtenció d'un hidrolitzat proteic d'Hb descolorat i hidrolitzava completament la globina, donant lloc a 2 pèptids de 10,8 i 7,4 KDa. Val a dir que també produïa un 60 80 % de nitrogen soluble en TCA, constituït fonamentalment per pèptids petits i aminoàcids lliures. Els hidrolitzats trípsics i pèpsics d'Hb, obtinguts a partir de FC no pressuritzada i deshidratats per atomització a 180ºC, eren de color blanc i tenien un contingut en humitat del 4,7 %, un 84,2 % de proteïna i 9,7 % de sals minerals. El procés d'hidròlisi permetia una reducció considerable de la contaminació de la FC, obtenint un producte en pols amb uns recomptes totals de l'ordre de 102-103 ufc·g-1. Pel que fa a la funcionalitat dels hidrolitzats d'Hb deshidratats per atomització, aquests presentaven una elevada solubilitat proteica a pH 5 i 7 i romanien solubles després d'un escalfament a 80ºC durant 30 min. Tanmateix, aquesta hidròlisi afectava molt negativament la capacitat de mantenir escumes estables i l'activitat emulsionant.

Radar images and numerical simulations of three shallow convective precipitation events over the Coastal Range in western Oregon are presented. In one of these events, unusually well-defined quasi-stationary banded formations produced large precipitation enhancements in favored locations, while varying degrees of band organization and lighter precipitation accumulations occurred in the other two cases. The difference between the more banded and cellular cases appeared to depend on the vertical shear within the orographic cap cloud and the susceptibility of the flow to convection upstream of the mountain. Numerical simulations showed that the rainbands, which appeared to be shear-parallel convective roll circulations that formed within the unstable orographic cap cloud, developed even over smooth mountains. However, these banded structures were better organized, more stationary, and produced greater precipitation enhancement over mountains with small-scale topographic obstacles. Low-amplitude random topographic roughness elements were found to be just as effective as more prominent subrange-scale peaks at organizing and fixing the location of the orographic rainbands.

Screenhouse experiments conducted in Kenya showed that inoculation of cabbage seedlings with Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), either alone, or in combination with Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV), reduced the number and weight of marketable harvested heads. When viruses were inoculated simultaneously, 25% of cabbage heads were non-marketable, representing 20-fold loss compared with control. By contrast, inoculation with CaMV alone had insignificant effects on cabbage yield. This suggests that TuMV is the more detrimental of these pathogens, and its management should be a priority. Early exposure to TuMV produced cabbages that were 50% lighter than non-infected plants, but later infection was less damaging suggesting that controlling virus infection at the seedling stage is more important. TuMV was far less damaging to kale than it was to cabbage; although high proportions of TuMV-inoculated kale plants showed symptoms (> 90%), the marketability and quality of leaves were not significantly reduced, and no clear relationship existed between timing of infection and subsequent crop losses. Early inoculation of Swiss chard with Beet mosaic virus (BtMV) significantly impaired leaf quality (similar to 50% reduction in marketable leaf production), but the impact of disease was greatest in plants that had been inoculated at maturity, where average leaf losses were two and a half times those recorded in virus-free plants. Disease-management of BtMV in Swiss chard is important, therefore, not only at the seedling stage, but particularly when plants are transplanted from nursery to field.

Waterbirds have been proposed as important vectors for the passive dispersal of those aquatic invertebrates and plants that lack a capacity for active dispersal between isolated water bodies. We analysed the frequency of internal transport of bryozoan propagules (statoblasts) by waterbirds in Donana, Spain, by examining their presence in the intestines and ceca of dead birds and analysing the role of different aspects of gut characteristics in explaining variation in the presence/absence and abundance of statoblasts. Of the 228 samples examined, 7.9% presented intact statoblasts of Plumatella fungosa (Pallas, 1768), Plumatella emarginata Allman, 1844, and two unidentified Plumatella species. For a given bird species, individuals with heavier gizzards and shorter ceca had a lower incidence and abundance of statoblasts in the lower gut. Grit mass and intestine length were unrelated to the presence or abundance of statoblasts. Our results suggest that waterbirds frequently transport bryozoans on a local scale, with lighter gizzards and longer ceca favouring such transport. Lighter gizzards are likely to destroy fewer propagules before they reach the lower gut. Species and individuals with longer ceca are particularly good candidates for long-distance dispersal of bryozoans, given the longer passage time of propagules that enter the ceca.

it has been established that triazinyl bipyridines (hemi-BTPs) and bis-triazinyl pyridines (BTPs), ligands which are currently being investigated as possible ligands for the separation of actinides from lanthanides in nuclear waste, are able to form homoleptic complexes with first row transition metals such as cobalt(IT), copper(II), iron(II), manganese(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II). The metal complexes exhibit six-co-ordinate octahedral structures and redox states largely analogous to those of the related terpyridine complexes. The reactivity of the different redox states of cobalt bis-hemi-BTP complex in aqueous environments has been studied with two-phase electrochemistry by immobilisation of the essentially water-insoluble metal complexes on graphite electrodes and the immersion of this modified electrode in an aqueous electrolyte. It was found that redox potentials for the metal-centred reactions were pH-independent whereas the potentials for the ligand-centred reactions were strongly pH-dependent. The reductive degradation of these complexes has been investigated by computational methods. Solvent extraction experiments have been carried out for a range of metals and these show that cobalt(II) and nickel(II) as well as palladium(II), cadmium(II) and lead(II) were all extracted with the ligands 1e and 2c with higher distribution ratios that was observed for americium(III) under the same conditions. Complexes have been synthesised with bis(2-pyridine carboxaldehyde) ethylenediimine (1) and bis(2-pyridine carboxaldehyde)propylene-1,3-diimine (2) with all of the available lanthanide trinitrates. Crystal structures were obtained for all but one complex with 1 and for all but one complex with 2. Four distinct structural types were established for 1 but only two for 2, although in all cases the structures contained one ligand bound to the metal in a tetradentate fashion. With 1, the four different structures of the lanthanide(III) nitrate complexes included 11-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)(H2O)] for Ln = La; 10 coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)(H2O)] with one monodentate and two bidentate nitrates for Ln = Ce, then 10-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)] for Ln = Pr-Yb with three bidentate nitrates; and 9-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)] with one monodentate and two bidentate nitrates for Ln = Lu. On the other hand for 2 only two distinct types of structure are obtained, the first type with Ln = La-Pr and the second type for Ln = Sm-Lu, although all are 10-coordinate with stoichiometry [Ln(2)(NO3)(3)]. The difference between the two types is in the disposition of the ligand relative to the nitrates. With the larger lanthanides La-Pr the ligand is found on one side of the coordination sphere with the three nitrate anions on the other. In these structures, the ligand is folded such that the angle between the two pyridine rings approaches 90degrees, while with the smaller lanthanides Sm-Lu, two nitrates are found on one side of the ligand and one nitrate on the other and the ligand is in an extended conformation such that the two pyridine rings are close to being coplanar. In both series of structures, the Ln-N and Ln-O bond lengths were consistent with the lanthanide contraction though there are significant variations between ostensibly equivalent bonds which are indicative of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and steric crowding in the complexes. Recently the BTBP-family of solvating ligands have been studied for their ability to separate trivalent actinides from lanthanides. Five of the BTBPs were evaluated for their ability to extract nickel(II) from aqueous nitrate media into cyclohexanone. It was shown by both solvent extraction and X-ray diffraction experiments that the BTBPs are capable of forming both 1: 1 and 1:2 complexes with nickel(II). When the BTBP concentration is low the nickel distribution ratio is governed by the formation of the nickel/BTBP complex while at higher BTBP concentrations the partitioning of the nickel complex between the two phases dictates the nickel distribution ratio.

The partitioning of minor trivalent actinides (An) from lanthanides (Ln) is one of the challenges in the chemical treatment of nuclear waste. The optimal ligand to carry out the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) using solvent extraction has to meet several important criteria: high selectivity towards the solute, chemical and radiolytic stability, stripping possibilities and recycling of the organic phase, high separation factors and good distribution ratio, to name just a few of them. A chronological line can be drawn along the development of each extraction ligand family and some milestones are emphasized in this overview. Further developments in organic synthesis of extracting ligands are expected.

Multiple parallel synthesis and evaluation have been combined in order to identify new nitrogen heterocycles for the partitioning of minor actinides(III) such as americium(III) from lanthanides such as europium(Ill). An array of triazine-containing molecules was made using multiple parallel syntheses from diketones and amide hydrazides. An excess of each of the resulting purified reagents was dissolved in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane containing 2-bromodecanoic acid, and equilibrated with an aqueous solution containing the radiotracers Eu-152 and Am-241 in nitric acid ([Eu] + [Am] < 400 nanomol dm(-3)). Gamma counting of the organic and aqueous phases led to the identification of several new reagents for the selective extraction of americium(III). In particular, 6-(2-pyridyl)-2-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazaphenyl)pyridines were found to be effective reagents for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III), (SFAm/Eu was ca. 30 in [HNO3] = 0.013 mol/L).

Changes in texture, microstructure, colour and protein solubility of Thai indigenous and broiler chicken Pectoralis muscle stripes cooked at different temperatures were evaluated. The change in shear value of both chicken muscles was a significant increase from 50 to 80 degrees C but no change from 80 to 100 degrees C. A significant decrease in fibre diameter was obtained in samples heated to an internal temperature of 60 degrees C and the greatest shrinkage of sarcomeres was observed with internal temperatures of 70-100 and 80-100 C for broiler and indigenous chicken muscles, respectively (P < 0.05). Cooking losses of indigenous chicken muscles increased markedly in the temperature range 80-100 C and were significantly higher than those of the broiler (P < 0.001). With increasing temperature, from 50 to 70 degrees C, cooked chicken muscle became lighter and yellower. Relationships between changes in sarcomere length, fibre diameter, shear value, cooking loss and solubility of muscle proteins were evaluated. It was found that the solubility of muscle protein was very highly correlated with the texture of cooked broiler muscle while sarcomere length changes and collagen solubility were important factors influencing the cooking loss and texture of cooked indigenous chicken muscle. BACKGROUND: Since the discovery in 2002 of acrylamide in a wide range of foods, there has been much work done to explore mechanisms of formation and to reduce acrylamide in commercial products. This study aimed to investigate simple measures which could be used to reduce acrylamide formation in home-cooked French fries, using potatoes from three cultivars stored under controlled conditions and sampled at three time points. RESULTS: The reducing sugar content for all three cultivars increased during storage, which led to increased acrylamide levels in the French fries. Washing and soaking (30 min or 2 h) raw French fries before cooking led to reductions in acrylamide of up to 23, 38 and 48% respectively. Pre-treated fries were lighter in colour after cooking than the corresponding controls. CONCLUSION: Pre-treatments such as soaking or washing raw French fries in water reduce acrylamide and colour formation in the final product when cooking is stopped at a texture-determined endpoint. Research on arable sandy loam and silty clay loam soils on 4° slopes in England has shown that tramlines (i.e. the unseeded wheeling areas used to facilitate spraying operations in cereal crops) can represent the most important pathway for phosphorus and sediment loss from moderately sloping fields. Detailed monitoring over the October–March period in winters 2005–2006 and 2006–2007 included event-based sampling of surface runoff, suspended and particulate sediment, and dissolved and particulate phosphorus from hillslope segments (each ∼300–800 m2) established in a randomized block design with four replicates of each treatment at each of two sites on lighter and heavier soils. Experimental treatments assessed losses from the cropped area without tramlines, and from the uncropped tramline area, and were compared to losses from tramlines which had been disrupted once in the autumn with a shallow tine. On the lighter soil, the effects of removal or shallow incorporation of straw residues was also determined. Research on both sandy and silty clay loam soils across two winters showed that tramline wheelings represented the dominant pathway for surface runoff and transport of sediment, phosphorus and nitrogen from cereal crops on moderate slopes. Results indicated 5·5–15·8% of rainfall lost as runoff, and losses of 0·8–2·9 kg TP ha−1 and 0·3–4·8 t ha−1 sediment in tramline treatments, compared to only 0·2–1·7% rainfall lost as runoff, and losses of 0·0–0·2 kg TP ha−1 and 0·003–0·3 t ha−1 sediment from treatments without tramlines or those where tramlines had been disrupted. The novel shallow disruption of tramline wheelings using a tine once following the autumn spray operation consistently and dramatically reduced (p < 0·001) surface runoff and loads of sediment, total nitrogen and total phosphorus to levels similar to those measured in cropped areas between tramlines. Results suggest that options for managing tramline wheelings warrant further refinement and evaluation with a view to incorporating them into spatially-targeted farm-level management planning using national or catchment-based agri-environment policy instruments aimed at reducing diffuse pollution from land to surface water systems. Global climate and weather models tend to produce rainfall that is too light and too regular over the tropical ocean. This is likely because of convective parametrizations, but the problem is not well understood. Here, distributions of precipitation rates are analyzed for high-resolution UK Met Office Unified Model simulations of a 10 day case study over a large tropical domain (∼20°S–20°N and 42°E–180°E). Simulations with 12 km grid length and parametrized convection have too many occurrences of light rain and too few of heavier rain when interpolated onto a 1° grid and compared with Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) data. In fact, this version of the model appears to have a preferred scale of rainfall around 0.4 mm h−1 (10 mm day−1), unlike observations of tropical rainfall. On the other hand, 4 km grid length simulations with explicit convection produce distributions much more similar to TRMM observations. The apparent preferred scale at lighter rain rates seems to be a feature of the convective parametrization rather than the coarse resolution, as demonstrated by results from 12 km simulations with explicit convection and 40 km simulations with parametrized convection. In fact, coarser resolution models with explicit convection tend to have even more heavy rain than observed. Implications for models using convective parametrizations, including interactions of heating and moistening profiles with larger scales, are discussed. One important implication is that the explicit convection 4 km model has temperature and moisture tendencies that favour transitions in the convective regime. Also, the 12 km parametrized convection model produces a more stable temperature profile at its extreme high-precipitation range, which may reduce the chance of very heavy rainfall. Further study is needed to determine whether unrealistic precipitation distributions are due to some fundamental limitation of convective parametrizations or whether parametrizations can be improved, in order to better simulate these distributions.
