This research objective was to verify the tissues reactions obtained, in surgical experimental bone defect, after the etil cyanoacrylate chemical adhesive application in rats parietal bones. 1t was investigated the acceptance or no acceptance of the tissues surround the bone defect in which was placed the etil cyanoacrylate and the control bone defect. The specimens were submitted to light microscopic analysis. 24 adults rats were used (Rattus norvergicus, albinus, Wistar) with the average weight to 300 gr. and were divided in two groups: treated and control. After the bone defects were realized, etil cyanoacrylate was placed over one of the defects at the parietal bone (treated group). On the other defect nothing was placed and it was used like control group. After 24 hours, 3,5,7,30 and sixty days after surgery, for animals of each group were sacrificed. The bone samples were removed and fixed in 10% formalin during 72 hours and analyzed using light microscopy. The results showed that the acute inflammatory responses was more observed at lhe treated group than the control group. The chemical adhesive was observed until 60 days follow the surgery and the tissues around it present normal appearance. The chemical adhesive, etil cyanaocrylate, did not impede at the bone repair process

Since the use of bovine instead of human dentine to evaluate cariogenic and anticariogenic substances is not well established, this in situ study was conducted. Eleven volunteers wore palatal acrylic devices containing 4 dentine slabs (2 human and 2 bovine). Sucrose solution (20%) was dripped over all slabs 4 times a day, simulating a cariogenic challenge. Dentifrice slurries, fluoridated or not, were dripped over specified dentine slabs 3 times a day to evaluate caries reduction. After 14 days, the biofilm formed on the dentine slabs was collected for microbiological analysis. In dentine, mineral loss (DeltaZ) and lesion depth (LD) were determined by cross-sectional microhardness and by polarized light microscopy, respectively. The total streptococci and mutans streptococci counts in the biofilm formed either on human or on bovine slabs, whether treated or not with fluoride dentifrice, were not statistically different. The DeltaZ and the LID values of dentine treated with fluoride dentifrice were significantly lower than the values of dentine treated with non-fluoride dentifrice. The differences in the DeltaZ and LD values between the human and bovine dentine were not statistically significant. The results suggest that bovine dentine can be used instead of human to evaluate caries development and inhibition. Copyright (C) 2003 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Currently, there has been a growing concern for men and women with the appearance of the face and body, driven primarily by aesthetic standards set by the media. For this, the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries have conducted numerous research projects aiming at the development of formulations that mitigate the aging and some skin disorders such as hipercromies. One of the most frequent pathologies of skin is melasma, a manifestation of hyperpigmentation caused by hipermelanogenesis symmetrical and progressive, caused usually by hormonal irregularities, exposure to sunlight and genetic factors. In addition to sunscreen, the treatment is indicated the use of depigmenting substances, among them the kojic dipalmitate (DK), which is cleaved into kojic acid (5- hydroxy-2-hydroxy-methyl-4H-piran-4-one) by esterase after absorption by the skin cells. The kojic acid inhibits the action of tyrosinase as a chelator of ions and promotes the reduction of eumelanin and its precursor monomer. To promote a controlled release and improve the stability of the system, the DK can be incorporated into multiple emulsions, that is, complex systems composed of two emulsifications, where the two types of emulsions (W/O and O/W or O/W and W/O) exist simultaneously, forming emulsions of type W/O/W or O/W/O. This work aimed to incorporate the DK in emulsion W/O/W, physical-chemical systems obtained and to evaluate the antioxidant and depigmenting action in vitro of the developed formulations. The physico-chemical characterization was performed by microscopic analysis, quantification and size distribution, determination of pH, conductivity, zeta potential and bioadhesive test of the formulations. The droplet size in accordance with the use of light microscopy and dynamic light scattering is approximately 1μm. The pH, electrical conductivity and bioadhesion have not changed with the addition... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract : The objective of this study was to evaluate quantitatively and to describe qualitatively the process of bone repair in the interface of receptor bed and graft autogenous bone block with or without a e-PTFE membrane, in osteopenia induced rats. To this end, we used forty-eight Wistar rats weighing about 300g, in which, with the aid of 4.1 mm trephine a graft was removed from the parietal bone and fixed to the surface of the left mandibular ramus. The animals were randomly divided into four experimental groups: Group 1 (n=12): SHAM operated and autogenous bone graft only; Group 2 (n=12): SHAM and autogenous bone graft covered by e-PTFE membrane; Group 3 (n=12): ovariectomized rats (OVX) and autogenous bone graft only; Group 4 (n=12): OVX and autogenous bone graft covered by e-PTFE membrane. The animals in each group were sacrificed at three time periods: 21, 45 and 60 days, each time with 4 animals per group. The specimens were decalcified and included, the sections were stained with HE and subjected to histological and histomorphometric analysis in light microscopy. The results of the ANOVA showed that the variables on the condition (OVZ and SHAM), and the time (21, 45 and 60 days) were statistically significant, and can be established with the Tukey test (5%) that the period 21-day differs significantly from the periods of 45 and 60 days, which did not differ among themselves. The descriptive histological analysis showed integration of the graft in all animals. It was concluded that the initial integration of the graft bed was negatively affected in the presence of induced osteopenia, and that the use or not of a e-PTFE membrane did not interfere in the process of integration

Micronuclei (MN) originate from chromosome fragments or whole chromosomes that lag behind at anaphase during cell division can occur due to excessive exposure to harmful agents, defects in mitosis and / or DNA repair process. The study evaluated the frequency of micronuclei in cytological samples after daily use of alcohol -based mouthwash mouth in smokers and non-smokers. We assessed 30 subjects, aged between 17-42 years and established as exclusion criteria: alcohol consumption; periodontal disease; systemic diseases that may interfere with the integrity of the oral mucosa; individuals with medical or pharmacological history that affect the performance of the study, family history of malignancies. For smokers the inclusion criterion was a minimum consumption of 20 cigarettes / day, and the contrast required for non-smokers. The sample was divided into 02 experimental groups: Group 1 Smokers and Group 2 Non-Smokers, both groups performed mouthwash (alcohol 21,6%) with Listerine® Defense of Teeth and Gums for 04 weeks cytological collection were performed on buccal mucosa and portion median border of the tongue, one for initial, week 0 control, and subsequent three weeks with continued use of mouthwash. The collected material was stained by specific staining Feulgen / Fast Green. The analysis of 3000 cells / individual was performed by light microscopy statistics used Kruskal- Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests for frequency MN. The frequency of micronuclei in buccal mucosa was 1.6 ± 1.75 and 1.46 ± 2.06 for the site language to Group 1 Smokers of showing a slight increase compared with Group 2 Non-smoking, which showed a variation of 1.2 ± 1.53 for the buccal mucosa site and 0.86 ± 1.41 for the site language. However, this difference was not statistically significant. The results suggest that alcohol-based mouthwash tested is not an inducer of genotoxic changes, thus not changing the frequency...

Anatomical characterization and chemical profi le of Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn leaf blades, from impacted and non-impacted mangroves of the São Paulo Coast. Several sources of environmental impact have caused great damage to the fl ora in mangroves. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the anatomy and chemical composition of Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn leaf blades, from impacted (Municipality of Santos) and non-impacted mangroves (Municipality of Peruíbe) of the São Paulo Coast. For the leaf anatomy studies, light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. For chemical analysis, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was conducted. The biometry revealed leaf tissues of plants from impacted mangroves with a less thick epidermis and mesophyll and higher width of the central vascular beam. A smaller number of stomata and higher amounts of druses in these leaves were also observed. Results were confi rmed by the Student t-test (α = 5%). The chemical profi les revealed a higher ammount of secondary metabolites in leaves from the impacted environment.
