A one-dimensional, biphasic, multicomponent steady-state model based on phenomenological transport equations for the catalyst layer, diffusion layer, and polymeric electrolyte membrane has been developed for a liquid-feed solid polymer electrolyte direct methanol fuel cell (SPE- DMFC). The model employs three important requisites: (i) implementation of analytical treatment of nonlinear terms to obtain a faster numerical solution as also to render the iterative scheme easier to converge, (ii) an appropriate description of two-phase transport phenomena in the diffusive region of the cell to account for flooding and water condensation/evaporation effects, and (iii) treatment of polarization effects due to methanol crossover. An improved numerical solution has been achieved by coupling analytical integration of kinetics and transport equations in the reaction layer, which explicitly include the effect of concentration and pressure gradient on cell polarization within the bulk catalyst layer. In particular, the integrated kinetic treatment explicitly accounts for the nonhomogeneous porous structure of the catalyst layer and the diffusion of reactants within and between the pores in the cathode. At the anode, the analytical integration of electrode kinetics has been obtained within the assumption of macrohomogeneous electrode porous structure, because methanol transport in a liquid-feed SPE- DMFC is essentially a single-phase process because of the high miscibility of methanol with water and its higher concentration in relation to gaseous reactants. A simple empirical model accounts for the effect of capillary forces on liquid-phase saturation in the diffusion layer. Consequently, diffusive and convective flow equations, comprising Nernst-Plank relation for solutes, Darcy law for liquid water, and Stefan-Maxwell equation for gaseous species, have been modified to include the capillary flow contribution to transport. To understand fully the role of model parameters in simulating the performance of the DMCF, we have carried out its parametric study. An experimental validation of model has also been carried out. The activities of CaO and Al2O3 in lime-alumina melts were studied by Knudsen cell-mass spectrometry at 2060 K. Emf of solid state cells, with CaF2 as the electrolyte, was measured from 923 to 1223 K to obtain the free energies of formation of the interoxide compounds. The results are critically evaluated in the light of data reported in the literature on phase equilibria, activities in melts, and stabilities of compounds. A coherent set of data is presented, including the previously unknown free energy of formation of CaO.6Al2O3 and the temperature dependence of activities in the liquid phase.

The variation of equilibrium oxygen potential with oxygen concentration inYBa 2Cu3O7-δhas been measured in the temperature range of 773 to 1223 K. For temperatures up to 1073 K, the oxygen content of theYBa 2Cu3O7-δsample, held in a stabilized-zirconia crucible, was altered by coulometric titration. The compound was in contact with the electrolyte, permitting direct exchange of oxygen ions. For measurements above 1073 K, the oxide was contained in a magnesia crucible placed inside a closed silica tube. The oxygen potential in the gas phase above the 123 compound was controlled and measured by a solid-state cell based on yttria-stabilized zirconia, which served both as a pump and sensor. Pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01 × 105 Pa was used as the reference electrode. The oxygen pressure over the sample was varied from 10-1 to 105 Pa. The oxygen concentrations of the sample equilibrated with pure oxygen at 1.01 × 105 Pa at different temperatures were determined after quenching in liquid nitrogen by hydrogen reduction at 1223 K. The plot of chemical potential of oxygen as a function of oxygen non-stoichiometry shows an inflexion at δ ∼ 0.375 at 873 K. Data at 773 K indicate tendency for phase separation at lower temperatures. The partial enthalpy and entropy of oxygen derived from the temperature dependence of electromotive force (emf ) exhibit variation with composition. The partial enthalpy for °= 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 also appears to be temperature dependent. The results are discussed in comparison with the data reported in the literature. An expression for the integral free energy of formation of YBa2Cu3O6.5 is evaluated based on measurements reported in the literature. By integration of the partial Gibbs’ energy of oxygen obtained in this study, the variation of integral property with oxygen concentration is obtained at 873 K.

It is a tough task to distinguish a short-range ferromagnetically correlated cluster-glass phase from a canonical spin-glass-like phase in many magnetic oxide systems using conventional magnetometry measurements. As a case study, we investigate the magnetic ground state of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3, which is often debated based on phase separation issues. We report the results of two samples of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 (S-1 and S-2) prepared under different conditions. Neutron depolarization, higher harmonic ac susceptibility and magnetic relaxation studies were carried out along with conventional magnetometry measurements to differentiate subtle changes at the microscopic level. There is no evidence of ferromagnetic correlation in the sample S-2 attributed to a spin-glass phase, and this is compounded by the lack of existence of a second order component of higher harmonic ac susceptibility and neutron depolarization. A magnetic relaxation experiment at different temperatures complements the spin glass characteristic in S-2. All these signal a sharp variance when we consider the cluster-glass-like phase (phase separated) in S-1, especially when prepared from an improper chemical synthesis process. This shows that the nonlinear ac susceptibility is a viable tool to detect ferromagnetic clusters such as those the neutron depolarization study can reveal.

We show that the third Goldstone mode, which emerges in binary condensates at phase separation, persists to higher interspecies interaction for density profiles where one component is surrounded on both sides by the other component. This is not the case with symmetry-broken density profiles where one species is entirely to the left and the other is entirely to the right. We, then, use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation to examine the mode evolution at T not equal 0 and demonstrate the existence of mode bifurcation near the critical temperature. The Kohn mode, however, exhibits deviation from the natural frequency at finite temperatures after the phase separation. This is due to the exclusion of the noncondensate atoms in the dynamics.

Graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) were synthesized by wet chemistry and the effect of r-GO in PS-PVME blends was investigated here with respect to phase miscibility, intermolecular cooperativity in the glass transition region and concentration fluctuation variance by shear rheology and dielectric spectroscopy. The spinodal decomposition temperature (T-s) and correlation length were evaluated from isochronal temperature scans in shear rheology. The r-GO is shown to induce miscibility in the blends, which may lead to increased local heterogeneity in the blends, though the length of cooperatively re-arranged regions (xi) at T-g is more or less unaltered. The evolution of the phase morphology as a function of temperature was assessed using polarized optical microscopy (POM). In the case of the 60/40 PS-PVME blends with 0.25 wt% r-GO, apart from significant refinement in the morphology, retention of the interconnected ligaments of PVME was observed, even in the late stages of phase separation suggesting that the coarsening of the phase morphology has been slowed down in the presence of r-GO. This phenomenon was also supported by AFM. Surface enrichment of PVME, owing to its lower surface tension, in the demixed samples was supported by XPS scans. The interconnected network of PVME has resulted in significantly higher permittivity in the bi-phasic blends, although the concentration of r-GO is below the percolation threshold.

Micro-Raman studies are conducted on as-quenched and annealed Ge15Te80 -_xIn5Agx glasses to probe the structural network and its evolution with composition. These studies reveal the presence of tetrahedral GeTe4 structural units in as-quenched samples. Specific signatures of the intermediate phase (IP) are observed in the composition dependence of Raman frequencies and corresponding intensities of different modes in the composition range, 8 <= x <= 16. In addition, the Raman peak positions are found to shift with silver doping. Apart from the Raman results, the compositional dependence of density, molar volume and thermal diffusivity, observed in the present study, confirms the presence of the intermediate phase. In thermally annealed samples, a unique variation of Raman wave-numbers in the intermediate region is observed due to the retention of some of the local structure even after the sample is crystallized. The observed Raman peaks are attributed to crystalline tellurium and silver lattice vibrational modes. Based on our present and earlier studies, we propose the occurrence of three thresholds in Ge15Te80 - xIn5Agx glasses, namely percolation of rigidity, percolation of stress and the onset of chemical phase separation on a nanoscale at 8%, 16% and 20% of silver concentration respectively. Investigations of two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) have been achieved with two model experimental systems, covering two distinct, non-overlapping regimes of the 2DES phase diagram, namely the quantum liquid phase in semiconducting heterostructures and the classical phases observed in electrons confined above the surface of liquid helium. Multielectron bubbles in liquid helium offer an exciting possibility to bridge this gap in the phase diagram, as well as to study the properties of electrons on curved flexible surfaces. However, this approach has been limited because all experimental studies have so far been transient in nature. Here we demonstrate that it is possible to trap and manipulate multielectron bubbles in a conventional Paul trap for several hundreds of milliseconds, enabling reliable measurements of their physical properties and thereby gaining valuable insight to various aspects of curved 2DES that were previously unexplored.

This paper explores phase formation and phase stability in free nanoparticles of binary alloys. A procedure for estimating the size and composition dependent free energies incorporating the contributions from the interfaces has been presented. Both single phase solid solution and two phase morphology containing interphase interfaces have been considered. A free energy scenario has been evaluated for two binary alloy systems Ag-Ni and Ag-Cu to predict the microstructure of the alloy nanoparticles at different size ranges as a function of composition. Both Ag-Cu and Ag-Ni systems exhibit wide bulk immiscibility. Ag-Ni nanoparticles were synthesized using the wet chemical synthesis technique whereas Ag-Cu nanoparticles were synthesized using laser ablation of a Ag-Cu target immersed in distilled water. Microstructural and compositional characterization of Ag-Ni and Ag-Cu nanoparticles on a single nanoparticle level was conducted using transmission electron microscopy. Nanoparticle microstructures observed from the microscopic investigation have been correlated with thermodynamic calculation results. It is shown that the observed two phase microstructure consisting of Ag-Ni solid solution in partial decomposed state coexisting with pure Ag phases in the case of Ag-Ni nanoparticles can be only be rationalized by invoking the tendency for phase separation of an initial solid solution with increase in nanoparticle size. Smaller sized Ag-Ni nanoparticles prefer a single phase solid solution microstructure. Due to an increase in particle size during the synthesis process the initial solid solution decomposes into an ultrafine scale phase separated microstructure. We have shown that it is necessary to invoke critical point phenomenon and wetting transition in systems showing a critical point that leads to phase separated Ag-Ni nanoparticles providing a catalytic substrate for the nucleation of equilibrium Ag over it. In the case of the Ag-Cu system, we report the experimental observation of a core shell structure at small sizes. This can be rationalized in terms of a metastable solid solution. It is argued that the nucleation barrier can prevent the formation of biphasic morphology with an internal interface. In such a situation, demixing of the solid solution can bring the system to a lower energy configuration. This has lead to the observed core-shell morphology in the Ag-Cu system during room temperature synthesis.

We show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations that the ground state of Ba3ZnIr2O9 is a realization of a novel spin-orbital liquid state. Our results reveal that Ba3ZnIr2O9 with Ir5+ (5d(4)) ions and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) arrives very close to the elusive J = 0 state but each Ir ion still possesses a weak moment. Ab initio density functional calculations indicate that this moment is developed due to superexchange, mediated by a strong intradimer hopping mechanism. While the Ir spins within the structural Ir2O9 dimer are expected to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial frustration arising from interdimer exchange interactions induce quantum fluctuations in these possible SOS states favoring a spin-orbital liquid phase down to at least 100 mK.

In this work. co-current flow characteristics of air/non-Newtonian liquid systems in inclined smooth pipes are studied experimentally and theoretically using transparent tubes of 20, 40 and 60 turn in diameter. Each tube includes two 10 m lone pipe branches connected by a U-bend that is capable of being inclined to any angle, from a completely horizontal to a fully vertical position. The flow rate of each phase is varied over a wide range. The studied flow phenomena are bubbly, plug flow, slug flow, churn flow and annular flow. These are observed and recorded by a high flow. stratified flow. -speed camera over a wide range of operating conditions. The effects of the liquid phase properties, the inclination angle and the pipe diameter on two-phase flow characteristics are systematically studied. The Heywood-Charles model for horizontal flow was modified to accommodate stratified flow in inclined pipes, taking into account the average void fraction and pressure drop of the mixture flow of a gas/non-Newtonian liquid. The pressure drop gradient model of Taitel and Barnea for a gas/Newtonian liquid slug flow was extended to include liquids possessing shear-thinning flow behaviour in inclined pipes. The comparison of the predicted values with the experimental data shows that the models presented here provide a reasonable estimate of the average void fraction and the corresponding pressure drop for the mixture flow of a gas/ non-Newtonian liquid. Hydrocyclones are widely used in industry, of which the geometrical design using CFD techniques is gaining more popularity in recent years. In this study, the Euler-Euler approach and the Reynolds stress model are applied to simulate the liquid-solid flowfield in a hydrocyclone. The methodology is validated by a good agreement between experimental data and numerical results. Within the research range, the simulation indicates that the liquid-solid separation mainly occurs in the conical segment, and increasing conical height or decreasing cylindrical height helps to improve the grade efficiencies of solid particles. Based on these results, two of the same hydrocyclones are designed and installed in series to establish a liquid-solid separation system. Many experiments are then conducted under different conditions, in which the effects of the water cut and the second hydrocyclone on the separation are investigated. The results also confirm that smaller solid particles are more susceptible to the inlet conditions, and the second hydrocyclone plays a more important role as the water cut reduces.

This thesis presents experimental measurements of the rheological behavior of liquid-solid mixtures at moderate Reynolds (defined by the shear rate and particle diameter) and Stokes numbers, ranging from 3 ≤ Re ≤ 1.6 × 103 and 0.4 ≤ St ≤ 195. The experiments use a specifically designed Couette cylindrical rheometer that allows for probing the transition from transporting a pure liquid to transporting a dense suspension of particles. Measurements of the shear stress are presented for a wide range of particle concentration (10 to 60% in volume) and for particle to fluid density ratio between 1 and 1.05. The effective relative viscosity exhibits a strong dependence on the solid fraction for all density ratios tested. For density ratio of 1 the effective viscosity increases with Stokes number (St) for volume fractions (φ) lower than 40% and becomes constant for higher φ. When the particles are denser than the liquid, the effective viscosity shows a stronger dependance on St. An analysis of the particle resuspension for the case with a density ratio of 1.05 is presented and used to predict the local volume fraction where the shear stress measurements take place. When the local volume fraction is considered, the effective viscosity for settling and no settling particles is consistent, indicating that the effective viscosity is independent of differences in density between the solid and liquid phase. Shear stress measurements of pure fluids (no particles) were performed using the same rheometer, and a deviation from laminar behavior is observed for gap Reynolds numbers above 4× 103, indicating the presence of hydrodynamic instabilities associated with the rotation of the outer cylinder. The increase on the effective viscosity with Stokes numbers observed for mixtures with φ ≤ 30% appears to be affected by such hydrodynamic instabilities. The effective viscosity for the current experiments is considerably higher than the one reported in non-inertial suspensions.
