In this paper, an interleaved multiphase buck converter with minimum time control strategy for envelope amplifiers in high efficiency RF power amplifiers is proposed. The solution for the envelope amplifier is to combine the proposed converter with a linear regulator in series. High efficiency of envelope amplifier can be obtained through modulating the supply voltage of the linear regulator. Instead of tracking the envelope, the buck converter has discrete output voltage that corresponding to particular duty cycles which achieve total ripple cancellation. The transient model for minimum time control is explained, and the calculation of transient times that are pre-calculated and inserted into a lookup table is presented. The filter design trade-off that limits capability of envelope modulation is also discussed. The experimental results verify the fast voltage transient obtained with a 4-phase buck prototype.

ABSTRACT. The beginning of the project is found in the improvement of a commercial sine wave three phase inverter which is based in a study about optimal excitation techniques to IGBTs which compose in the power stage. In the early phases of project it is proposed a much more ambitious idea, the fact of a new emergency converter, proposed for the rail sector to work in an air condition unit. This converter is formed by an association of a block cascaded DC/DC booster and a block DC/AC inverter three-phase controlled by a sine wave modulation PWM. The purposed was to give a solution to following problems detected in commercial converters nowadays: an excessively oversized block boost, independent control subsystems for two blocks that configure the converter. In addition, driver board is redesigned with each specifications change demand it a new customer, and finally, the communications, diagnostic and maintenance that needed a important upgrade. Initially, it has been performed a theoretical study of boost and the inverter blocks to be able to perform the component’s design and the size (semiconductor and electromagnetic fields). Once finished power study, it is analysed the control performed using direct measures and simulation of boost control strategy and inverter. With this it is obtained complete information about existing cards functionality. The project is looking for the design of just one controller card and one drivers´ card for both blocks. By unrelated problems, during the course of this project a commercial realization. So at least its decided to create control board to be able to existing converter, replacing boost block’s control board. To be able to manufacture control board it is divided in two cards connected in sandwiching mode. In a card is microcontroller and in another is all needed interface to operate with the system: digital inputs and outputs, analogical inputs and outputs, CAN communication, and a small DC / DC business that provide power supply to the prototype. It is performed a small functional program to handle the converter, which with an input voltage 110V DC provides an output voltage 380V AC. As already has been exposed, due to industrial project cancellation it is decided no to continue with all improvements and directly to evaluate it in the current phase.

A 3-year Project started on November 1 2010, financed by the European Commision within the FP-7 Space Program, and aimed at developing an efficient de-orbit system that could be carried on board by future spacecraft launched into LEO, will be presented. The operational system will deploy a thin uninsulated tape-tether to collect electrons as a giant Langmuir probe, using no propellant/no power supply, and generating power on board. This project will involve free-fall tests, and laboratory hypervelocity-impact and tether-current tests, and design/Manufacturing of subsystems: interface elements, electric control and driving module, electron-ejecting plasma contactor, tether-deployment mechanism/end-mass, and tape samples. Preliminary results to be presented involve: i) devising criteria for sizing the three disparate tape dimensions, affecting mass, resistance, current-collection, magnetic self-field, and survivability against debris itself; ii) assessing the dynamical relevance of tether parameters in implementing control laws to limit oscillations in /off the orbital plane, where passive stability may be marginal; iii) deriving a law for bare-tape current from numerical simulations and chamber tests, taking into account ambient magnetic field, ion ram motion, and adiabatic electron trapping; iv) determining requirements on a year-dormant hollow cathode under long times/broad emission-range operation, and trading-off against use of electron thermal emission; v) determining requirements on magnetic components and power semiconductors for a control module that faces high voltage/power operation under mass/volume limitations; vi) assessing strategies to passively deploy a wide conductive tape that needs no retrieval, while avoiding jamming and ending at minimum libration; vii) evaluating the tape structure as regards conductive and dielectric materials, both lengthwise and in its cross-section, in particular to prevent arcing in triple-point junctions.

The combination of minimum time control and multiphase converter is a favorable option for dc-dc converters in applications where output voltage variation is required, such as RF amplifiers and dynamic voltage scaling in microprocessors, due to their advantage of fast dynamic response. In this paper, an improved minimum time control approach for multiphase buck converter that is based on charge balance technique, aiming at fast output voltage transition is presented. Compared with the traditional method, the proposed control takes into account the phase delay and current ripple in each phase. Therefore, by investigating the behavior of multiphase converter during voltage transition, it resolves the problem of current unbalance after the transient, which can lead to long settling time of the output voltage. The restriction of this control is that the output voltage that the converter can provide is related to the number of the phases, because only the duty cycles at which the multiphase converter has total ripple cancellation are used in this approach. The model of the proposed control is introduced, and the design constraints of the buck converters filter for this control are discussed. In order to prove the concept, a four-phase buck converter is implemented and the experimental results that validate the proposed control method are presented. The application of this control to RF envelope tracking is also presented in this paper.

ABSTRACT The requirement of delivering high data rates in modern wireless communication systems results in complex modulated RF signals with wide bandwidth and high peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). In order to guarantee the linearity performance, the conventional linear power amplifiers typically work at 4 to 10 dB back-off from the maximum output power, leading to low system efficiency. The envelope elimination and restoration (EER) and envelope tracking (ET) are two promising techniques to overcome the efficiency problem. In both EER and ET, it is challenging to design efficient envelope amplifier for wide bandwidth and high PAPR RF signals. An usual approach for envelope amplifier includes a high-efficiency switching power converter operating at a frequency higher than the RF signal's bandwidth. In this case, the power loss of converter caused by high switching operation becomes unbearable for system efficiency when signal bandwidth is very wide. The solution of this problem is the focus of this dissertation that presents two architectures of envelope amplifier: a hybrid series converter with slow-envelope technique and a multilevel converter based on a multiphase buck converter with the minimum time control. In the first architecture, a hybrid topology is composed of a switched buck converter and a linear regulator in series that work together to adjust the output voltage to track the envelope with accuracy. A slow envelope generation algorithm yields a waveform with limited slew rate that is lower than the maximum slew rate of the original envelope. The buck converter's output follows this waveform instead of the original envelope using lower switching frequency, because the waveform has not only reduced slew rate but also reduced bandwidth. In this way, the linear regulator used to filter the waveform has additional power loss. Depending on how much reduction of the slew rate of envelope in order to obtain that waveform, there is a trade-off between the power loss of buck converter related to the switching frequency and the power loss of linear regulator. The optimal point referring to the lowest total power loss of this envelope amplifier is identified with the help of a precise power loss model that is a combination of behavioral and analytic loss model. In addition, the output filter's effect on the response is analyzed. An extra parallel damping filter is needed to eliminate the resonant oscillation of output filter L and C, because the buck converter operates in open loop. The second architecture is a multilevel voltage tracking envelope amplifier. Unlike the converters using multi-sources, a multiphase buck converter is employed to generate the multilevel voltage. In the steady state, the buck converter operates at complete ripple cancellation points of duty cycle. The number of the voltage levels is equal to the number of phases according the characteristics of interleaved buck converter. In the transition, a minimum time control (MTC) for multiphase converter is originally proposed and developed for changing the output voltage of buck converter between different levels. As opposed to conventional minimum time control for multiphase converter with equivalent inductance, the proposed MTC considers the current ripple of each phase based on the fixed phase shift resulting in different control schemes among the phases. The advantage of this control is that all the phase current return to the steady state after the transition so that the next transition can be triggered very soon, which is very favorable for the application of multilevel voltage tracking. Besides, the control is independent on the load condition and not affected by the unbalance of phase current. Like the first architecture, there is also a linear stage with the same function, connected in series with the multiphase buck converter. Since both steady state and transition state of the converter are not strongly related to the switching frequency, it can be reduced for wide bandwidth envelope which is the main consideration of this architecture. The optimization of the second architecture for wider bandwidth envelope is presented including the output filter design, switching frequency and the number of phases. The filter design area is restrained by fast transition and the minimum pulse of hardware. The fast transition needs small filter but the minimum pulse of hardware limitation pushes the filter in opposite way. The converter switching frequency mainly affects the minimum pulse limitation and the power loss. With lower switching frequency, the pulse width in the transition is smaller. The number of phases related to specific application can be optimized in terms of overall efficiency. Another aspect of optimization is improving control strategy. Transition shift allows tracking some parts of envelope that are faster than the hardware can support at the price of complexity. The new transition synchronization method increases the frequency of transition, allowing the multilevel voltage to be closer to the envelope. Both control strategies push the converter to track wider bandwidth envelope than the limitation of power stage. The power loss model of envelope amplifier is detailed and validated by measurements. The power loss mechanism of buck converter has to include the transitions in real time operation, which is different from classical power loss model of synchronous buck converter. This model estimates the system efficiency and play a very important role in optimization process. Finally, the second envelope amplifier architecture is integrated with a Class F amplifier. EER system measurement proves the power saving with the proposed envelope amplifier without disrupting the linearity performance.

ABSTRACT The approval of Law 38/1999 on November 5, 1999, (Official Gazette BOE 266/1999 of 11.6.1999, p. 38925), was the culmination of a long period of over 20 years of gestation for which deep agreements were needed between all stakeholders affected. Although several parliamentary groups denounced its incomplete approval, regarding mandatory guarantees to the purchaser, its enactment caused general satisfaction among most of the the building agents. This assessment remains after fourteen years since its partial enactment. Its essential purpose, “to regulate the building process”, is based on 3 pillars: 1.- To complete the legal configuration of the agents involved in it, setting their obligations in order to establish their responsibilities. 2.- To promote the buildings quality. 3.- To specify users´guarantees against possible buildings damage. These three issues are strongly related, since the obligations and responsibilities of the actors are the basis of the users’guarantees constitution, defined by the basic performance required by buildings. Based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the fulfillment of the new law’s objectives, made by monitoring the three pillars, we propose measures to the full enactment of this Directive, by the development of the Royal Decree, provided in its Second Additional Provision, once maturity in the sectors of the building and insurance is achieved. Throughout this process of study we have seen that the skill identification of damage, particularly those affecting the stability of the building, is an essential tool for the proper allocation of responsibilities of the new regime installed by the art. 17 LOE, based on the application of the three degrees of responsibility "ex lege" for property damage and limitation periods. To support this proposal, we have analyzed: 1.- The evolution of the building sector in Europe and Spain during the years before and after the enactment of the Law, due to the influence of cycles of activity produced in industry regulation, the responsibilities attributed to agents, promotion of the quality and the assurances given to acquirers. 2.- The scope of various laws on liability and building agents warranties in the countries of our economic environment. 3.- The long period of LOE generation, focusing on the developments in recent drafts and parliamentary procedure. 4.- The doctrinal development in the Transition from the regime of responsibilities, set by art. 1591 of the Civil Code, and its Jurisprudence, to the new liability regime established by art. 17 LOE. In this task, while we have noted assimilation by the Judges and Magistrates of the doctrinal principles of the LOE, we have also analyzed the work of experts, whose skilled identification of the damage causes helps the fair and efficient allocation of responsibilities. 5 - The effectiveness of the LOE based on knowledge of the siniestral statistics, which are already consolidated data, after the cancellation of nearly 15,000 claims to Architects. 6.- We have also studied the degree of compliance with the user and owner guarantees, established in art. 19 and the D.A. 1th of the LOE, exposing the real effects achieved and the pending tasks ahead. Analyzing the allocation of the building agents´ responsibilities, within the first cornerstone of the LOE, we have studied the expert witnesses actions and their impact on this duty, selecting cases of great interest and difficulty in this aim. The result of this enterprise has been to propose the specialization of this group, avoiding "irregular" behaviors that create as much damage as the agents claimed to affected owners. This damage is evident and can cause wrong convictions, illicit enrichment, false expectations and inefficient and costly damage repairs. In order to achieve the pillar of building quality through the basic requirements set by the LOE and developed by the Technical Building Code (Royal Decree 314/ 2006 of 17 March), we have analyzed records of damage claims involving buildings executed under the new regime LOE. On this basis we have analyzed the root causes of various damages and their frequency, from these data it will be easy to propose lines of action for prevention. Finally, after demonstrating that mandatory warranties imposed by LOE cover only a small percentage of the potential building damage, we emphasize the need for the full effectiveness of the Law by the obligation all the guarantees provided in the art. 19 LOE, and for all types of buildings. In conclusion, this thesis is designed as an open matrix in which we will continue including data on the evolution of the doctrine, jurisprudence and the statistics of the damage to the building.

The singularities in Dromo are characterized in this paper, both from an analytical and a numerical perspective. When the angular momentum vanishes, Dromo may encounter a singularity in the evolution equations. The cancellation of the angular momentum occurs in very speci?c situations and may be caused by the action of strong perturbations. The gravitational attraction of a perturbing planet may lead to rapid changes in the angular momentum of the particle. In practice, this situation may be encountered during deep planetocentric ?ybys. The performance of Dromo is evaluated in di?erent scenarios. First, Dromo is validated for integrating the orbit of Near Earth Asteroids. Resulting errors are of the order of the diameter of the asteroid. Second, a set of theoretical ?ybys are designed for analyzing the performance of the formulation in the vicinity of the singularity. New sets of Dromo variables are proposed in order to minimize the dependency of Dromo on the angular momentum. A slower time scale is introduced, leading to a more stable description of the ?yby phase. Improvements in the overall performance of the algorithm are observed when integrating orbits close to the singularity.

Background: This study examined the daily surgical scheduling problem in a teaching hospital. This problem relates to the use of multiple operating rooms and different types of surgeons in a typical surgical day with deterministic operation durations (preincision, incision, and postincision times). Teaching hospitals play a key role in the health-care system; however, existing models assume that the duration of surgery is independent of the surgeon's skills. This problem has not been properly addressed in other studies. We analyze the case of a Spanish public hospital, in which continuous pressures and budgeting reductions entail the more efficient use of resources. Methods: To obtain an optimal solution for this problem, we developed a mixed-integer programming model and user-friendly interface that facilitate the scheduling of planned operations for the following surgical day. We also implemented a simulation model to assist the evaluation of different dispatching policies for surgeries and surgeons. The typical aspects we took into account were the type of surgeon, potential overtime, idling time of surgeons, and the use of operating rooms. Results: It is necessary to consider the expertise of a given surgeon when formulating a schedule: such skill can decrease the probability of delays that could affect subsequent surgeries or cause cancellation of the final surgery. We obtained optimal solutions for a set of given instances, which we obtained through surgical information related to acceptable times collected from a Spanish public hospital. Conclusions: We developed a computer-aided framework with a user-friendly interface for use by a surgical manager that presents a 3-D simulation of the problem. Additionally, we obtained an efficient formulation for this complex problem. However, the spread of this kind of operation research in Spanish public health hospitals will take a long time since there is a lack of knowledge of the beneficial techniques and possibilities that operational research can offer for the health-care system.

ABSTRACT. Active noise control consists on attenuating the noise in an acoustic environment by emitting a signal equal but phase opposed to the undesired noise. The sum of both signals results in mutual cancellation, so that the residual noise is much lower than the original. The operation of these systems is based on the behavior principles of wave phenomena discovered by Augustin-Jean Fresnel, Christiaan Huygens and Thomas Young. Since the 1930’s, active noise control system prototypes have been developed, though these first ideas were practically unrealizable or required manual adjustments very often, therefore they were unusable. In the 1970’s, American researcher Bernard Widrow develops the adaptive signal processing theory and the Least Mean Squares algorithm (LMS). Thereby, implementing digital filters whose response adapts dynamically to the variable environment conditions, becomes possible. With the emergence of digital signal processors in the 1980’s and their later evolution, active noise cancellation systems based on adaptive signal processing are attained. Nowadays active noise control systems have been successfully implemented on automobiles, planes, headphones or racks for professional equipment. Active noise control is based on the fxlms algorithm, which is actually a modified version of the LMS adaptive filtering algorithm that allows compensation for the acoustic response of the environment. Therefore it is possible to dynamically filter a noise reference signal to obtain the appropriate cancelling signal. As the noise cancellation space is limited to approximately one tenth of the wavelength, noise attenuation is only viable for low frequencies. It is commonly accepted the limit of 500 Hz. For mid and high frequencies, conditioning and isolating passive techniques must be used, as they produce very good results. The objective of this project is to develop a noise cancellation system for periodic noise, by using consumer electronics and a DSP development kit based on a very-low-cost processor. Several C coded modules have been developed for the DSP, implementing the appropriate signal processing to the noise reference. This processed signal, once emitted, results in noise cancellation. The developed code has been tested by generating the undesired noise signal in the DSP. This signal is emitted through a speaker simulating the noise source to be removed, and another speaker emits an fxlms filtered version of the same signal. Several versions of the algorithm have been tested, obtaining attenuation levels around 20 – 35 dB measured in a tight bandwidth around the generator frequency, or around 8 – 15 dB measured in broadband.

Multiple brain maps are commonly found in virtually every vertebrate sensory system. Although their functional significance is generally relatively little understood, they seem to specialize in processing distinct sensory parameters. Nevertheless, to yield the stimulus features that ultimately elicit the adaptive behavior, it appears that information streams have to be combined across maps. Results from current lesion experiments in the electrosensory system, however, suggest an alternative possibility. Inactivations of different maps of the first-order electrosensory nucleus in electric fish, the electrosensory lateral line lobe, resulted in markedly different behavioral deficits. The centromedial map is both necessary and sufficient for a particular electrolocation behavior, the jamming avoidance response, whereas it does not affect the communicative response to external electric signals. Conversely, the lateral map does not affect the jamming avoidance response but is necessary and sufficient to evoke communication behavior. Because the premotor pathways controlling the two behaviors in these fish appear to be separated as well, this system illustrates that sensory–motor control of different behaviors can occur in strictly segregated channels from the sensory input of the brain all through to its motor output. This might reflect an early evolutionary stage where multiplication of brain maps can satisfy the demand on processing a wider range of sensory signals ensuing from an enlarged behavioral repertoire, and bridging across maps is not yet required.
